Security Plus at Neptune Quay

Nico friction hinges have been installed at the new dock development, Neptune Quay, at Ipswich.

The Security Plus hinges – which offer additional security protection – were specified by Quantum Windows of Corby, who supplied high specification aluminium casement windows for the 56 Neptune Apartments.

Quantum Windows, the UK supplier of trade windows, has standardised on Nico Friction Hinges for its uPVC and internally-glazed aluminium casement windows.
Colin Lee, Quantum Sales & Marketing Manager explains the company’s choice.
‘ At Quantum, we have a reputation for manufacturing high quality products. We selected Nico hinges thanks to their superior quality and reliability – giving us and our customer total peace of mind.’ He adds, ‘The excellent support provided by our Nico sales engineer and the rest of the Nico team completes a great package.’

Nico Security Plus Friction Hinge
The Nico Security Plus Standard Friction Hinge with 17mm stack height was installed at Neptune Quay.

Thanks to its patented design – with hook and free-moving nose cap – the Hinge gets stronger should forced entry be attempted. When pressure is applied to the hinge, compressive forces are actually converted into tensile forces, increasing the strength of the locked sash bar.

The Security Plus Friction Hinge is available in a range of sizes, from 250mm to 600mm for top hung windows, 300mm and 400mm for side hung windows, in a choice of 13mm or 17mm stack heights, suitable for PVCu, aluminium or timber profiles.

Part of the Nico Security Plus Range
The Security Plus Friction Hinge is part of Nico’s Security Plus range, which includes Restrictor and Egress Friction Hinges, Shootbolt, X-tra Bolt and Restrictor Safety Catch.

All products are approved to BBA and relevant British Standards, as well as accredited by the Secured by Design scheme.

It’s all in the Decor

Surrey-based Angel Plastics has just completed a contract to renew the ceiling of a private indoor swimming pool situated in Epsom.

The ageing decorated fibreboard ceiling was replaced using Deeplas by Deceuninck’s Décor ceiling panels and took a two-man fitting team just one week to complete. This was some achievement as the 13m x 8m pool could not be drained and a temporary structure had to be erected to undertake the installation process.

The Décor range was selected due to its maintenance free properties, wide choice of colour and finishes and moisture resistance making it suitable for high humidity environments. The Décor panels operate a tongue and groove principle ensuring quick and efficient installation with less disruption than conventional ceiling products.

Director of Angel Plastics, Stephen Cobb commented, ‘The customer wanted a maintenance free ceiling that was impervious to moisture and Décor was the natural choice. We have worked with the product for many years and continually offer the range to our customers due to the wide collection of colours and the superior finish this product delivers.’

The new Décor ceiling was completed with a variety of skylights to the delight of a very happy customer.

Refurbishment Success for Securistyle at Twin Valley Homes

In a major new refurbishment project, Securistyle window hardware has been specified on 8,500 thousand properties owned by Twin Valley Homes, as part of a five year up-grade scheme.

The properties are being fitted with the Vector Excluder Package that includes Defender Restrictor or Egress hinges, to safeguard residents from accidents and fire, as well as the Vector Excluder locking mechanism and Vision handle for added window security.

The decision to refurbish the homes was brought about by a promise to tenants by Twin Valley Homes to improve the windows, doors and kitchens within five to six years of taking over the stock from Blackburn and Darwen Borough Council. The contract was undertaken in partnership with contractors Herbert T Forrest and Durose and Gourlay and Wates Construction ltd.

Phil Richards, CEO of Twin Valley Homes said: ‘The tenants’ welfare has been put at the heart of the operation. We needed a supplier who would provide secure, easy to use and adjustable hardware. That is why we chose Securistyle.’

Vivienne Taylor, Northern Specifications Sales Manager at Securistyle commented: ‘It is good to see social housing providers working hard to meet the needs of their tenants. We are always keen to offer support and advice to specifiers and regularly visit organisations to demonstrate our products.’

Securistyle offers a free CPD-certified seminar covering all aspects of safety, security, emergency egress, corrosion resistance and ‘Best Value’ in relation to window hardware specification. Further details are available from Securistyle on 01242 221200.

Windows with A Twist for Yorkshire Inn

A unique style of window has been installed in The Huntsman Inn, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. The Sheerframe System 6000 casements are white on the outside and light oak on the inside, the reverse of what is usually requested, and a first for Sheerframe fabricators, South Yorkshire Home Improvements, which made the installation.

A collection of two-storey buildings built around 1800, The Huntsman Inn features a mixture of fixed and opening windows, including several large arched top windows, small round windows on the upper level, casements with Georgian beading - separating areas internally - and small square feature windows, as well as several Sheerframe doors.

Tony Cartwright, owner of The Huntsman Inn, commented, ‘Even though the building has been completely refurbished, we have still kept many of the original features, and so were keen to maintain the traditional charm with timber effect windows. However we were not so keen to have woodgrain on the outside of the building. We approached several companies in the area but South Yorkshire Home Improvements was the only company that could do what we wanted, and we are really pleased with the way they have turned out.’

Director of South Yorkshire Home Improvements, John Hutchins, said, ‘We have made plenty of installations where the woodgrain has been on the outside, but this is the first reversed request we had ever received. The principles involved in manufacture were essentially the same, so we saw no reason why it couldn’t be done. We are really pleased with the overall effect. The inn looks clean and modern from the outside and rustic on the inside, with the windows matching perfectly with the wooden beams, floors and furniture.’

Weathertightness and long life were also very important factors in the specification, as the inn is located in a very exposed location. All Sheerframe windows are tested to BS 6375: Part 1 for weathertightness and are available with the revolutionary Thermlock reinforcing to meet Part L, or Part J in Scotland, without the need to resort to Exotic Glass.

ThermoCool™ Aligned with Atlantic Quay Requirements

More than 2000 square metres of ThermoCool™ insulating glass units have been supplied by HansenGlass for the completion of an imposing new office development close to the River Clyde in Glasgow.

Number Six Atlantic Quay has been constructed by Balfour Beatty Construction with Charles Henshaw & Sons Limited from Edinburgh being the curtain walling and cladding specialist responsible for the structure’s articulate enclosure.

The high performance insulating glass units manufactured by HansenGlass were installed within the bespoke curtain walling systems. They were also used in both vertical and sloping applications on the building’s imposing 9 by 15 metre atrium roof.

A key feature to the creation of the seven storey, fully and partially glazed elevations to No 6 Atlantic Quay was the production by HansenGlass of units presenting enamelled as well as screen-printed finishes, for decoration and concealment.

The sales director for Charles Henshaw, Mr Jim Walker, comments: ‘We required a non-standard lozenge shape frit across the bottom half of the full height glazing to offer privacy when viewed from outside. HansenGlass was able to produce these using its Ceraphic™ screen-printing process.

‘Then across the depth of the slab level, Ceramalite™ spandrel units were used to conceal the structure. Some of these units have 75 mm of foil backed insulation to achieve the required U-value performance. The effect produced is very pleasing to all involved.’

Charles Henshaw utilised the ThermoCool™ units in combination with both its dry glazed, capped curtain walling and its structural silicone glazing systems.

Uphill Struggle for Cairngorm Installers

The thermal and weatherproofing qualities of Profile 22's 70mm Bubblex frames are more than a match for the harsh climatic conditions at this Scottish Ski Club hut in the Cairngorm Mountains, one of the UK's most exposed locations.

With a 1.8 U value using standard components (ie: standard low E glass) and the Bubblex pre-gasketed system, the Profile 22 system proves it can perform cost-effectively in even the most challenging of situations without the need for additional measures, such as argon-filling.

This 1.8 U value meets the current requirements of Document J of the Scottish Building Regulations.

In what is probably the company’s highest job to date, the 17 Rosewood PVCu windows, measuring up to 2 metres by 1.2 metres, were manufactured and fitted by Inverness-based Cairngorm Windows, the domestic division of Alba Windows, a long-established Profile 22 fabricator.

At about 2,500 feet above sea level, it was a testing installation due to sheer location, difficult access to the building, size of the frames and poor weather.

Access was the first challenge, with a four-wheel drive vehicle needed to transport men and materials uphill for half a mile from the skiers' car park which is at 2,150 feet above sea level and is above Coylumbridge, near Aviemore.

‘The windows and glass then had to be carried separately from the vehicle along a wooden boardwalk and glazed in-situ due to their weight,’ explained David Dowling, Managing Director of Cairngorm Windows. ‘The weather was also against us - although the contract was signed in September, we had to wait until May for the weather to be good enough to start the job.’

President of the Scottish Ski Club, Niall Graham-Campbell said most of the original timber windows in the hut, built around 40 years ago, were rotten. ‘So given the location and harsh climate, we felt it was worthwhile to replace them all in one go. And we're delighted with the result, the fitting teams did a first-class job,’ he added.

Marvault RL Canopy Creates Dry Outdoor Play Area

A large Marvault RL clear polycarbonate barrel vault canopy has been installed to create a dry outdoor play area for the younger children of St Mary’s CE Primary School, Greenfield, Oldham. Specified by architects Thorpe Whyman & Briggs, the canopy was manufactured and fixed by Brett Martin Daylight Systems on behalf of P&L Construction Ltd as part of their work on the school’s new ‘Early Years Unit’.

School Head, Mrs Helen Rowland, commented 'It’s like having an extra new classroom. The canopy’s so clear that you almost forget it’s there and the children love it because they can now play happily outside whatever the weather.'

Comprising 5 interconnected bays, this bespoke Marvault RL canopy is 4.85 metres long and spans 5.175 metres. The specially rolled aluminium glazing bars are polyester powder coated to the architect’s specification (RAL5014, Dove Blue) and the canopy’s glazing is a single skin of 6mm Marlon FSX clear polycarbonate.

With its large span capability, Marvault RL is suitable for dry play areas, building entrances and cycle bays. And because the modules can be easily linked to create any length and angled to form any configuration, they’re also suitable for external walkways between buildings as well as rooflights on flat roofs providing natural daylight to internal rooms and corridors.

This attractive and versatile architectural glazing system has good weather resistance, durability and reliability. Although clear solid, single skin polycarbonate material was used on this project, Marvault RL can also be glazed in multi-wall polycarbonate or installed as a double skin system. Tinted options include diffused, opal, bronze or other solar protection colours.

When installed on flat roofs, individual bays of the Marvault RL system can be ventilated by specifying either louvre vents or manual / electrically operated hinge openings to one side or in gull wing style. All Marvault RL rooflights have a fully water-managed drainage system and well-engineered extruded aluminium glazing bars either in mill finish or powder coated to any RAL colour.

CAP helps University of Surrey with Student Accommodation

Students at the University of Surrey, Guildford will be accommodated in fine style thanks to the new four storey International House, which is enclosed with a £500k curtain wall by architectural glazing contractor CAP Aluminium. This is CAP’s second building for the university.

Architects Lewis & Hickey, with contractor Bluestone Plc, gave the distinctive ‘E’ shaped building a striking appearance and secure weatherproofing by using CAP’s façade expertise to provide an emerald, double glazed envelope.

As Kawneer’s biggest customer, its PFSG structural glazed system was installed on three facades with 1200 Series curtain wall, powder coated metallic grey, incorporated on the main entrance screen. Kawneer’s 601 Series top hung windows, offering high performance ventilation and security on eleven elevations, are powder coated grey and blue metallic to give extra definition.

At ground level, Kawneer glazed doors, some as tall as canopy level, were designed to co-ordinate with the streamlined facades. Brise Soleil were combined with the glazing on the north elevation to give welcome shade during high sunlight hours.

On the same campus, the inspirational new Daphne Jackson building by architects Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners also had Bluestone Plc as main contractor and a facade designed and installed by CAP.

Metal UK Shows Pied-A-Terre in a New Light

Metal UK has completed the design, engineering and installation of extensive glass features to a stunning Victorian pied-a-terre refurbishment project in Montpelier Walk, Kensington, London.

Designer Malin Iovino‚s and architect Peter Stanway's concepts for the refurbishment were brought to life by Metal UK's designers and engineers. 'The overall challenge was to introduce natural light to the interior, no simple task as the house is tall, comparatively narrow and spread over four floors,' says Malin. 'We selected Metal UK on referral after finding that they had successfully completed similar projects in the past.'

On the ground floor, Metal UK designed, manufactured and installed a pitched structural glass ceiling, with three-ply structural glass beams. Immediately under this is a 2.5m x 2m cantilevered laminated structural glass balcony floor, which allows light through into the basement area beneath. The balcony has a three-section laminated glass balustrade and is bedded onto a steel frame.

The stairway to the basement has been lined with a four-section monolithic toughened glass balustrade. The basement has been converted into a combined lounge, dining room and kitchen. At the front end Metal UK designed, engineered and installed a structural glass entrance, featuring two of the company's double-glazed frameless Sheerglaze pivoting doors. The roof of this has been treated with Metal UK's Ritec product - a new spray-on treatment that prevents dirt from adhering to the surface.

'I am absolutely delighted with the finished effect,' says Malin Iovino. 'Metal UK has been invaluable in bringing my designs to fruition. I don't know any other company that could have interpreted my designs, engineered, manufactured and installed the structural glass units. Most importantly, the client is thrilled with the end result.'

Sheerframe Creates the Perfect Match

Chesterfield Registrars Office has found its perfect partner in Sheerframe windows following a recent refurbishment project that also involved Chesterfield Law Centre.

The buildings were constructed around 1934 and although not listed, are in a conservation area. Council planners were keen that the new windows should match as closely as possible to the failing timber sashes they replaced, to retain the original characteristics of the buildings.

Yorkshire-based Slimline Windows Limited installed a combination of Sheerframe vertically sliding sash (VSS) windows and Sheerframe System 7000 casements.
Richard Lee, operations director, commented, ‘We were confident that the Sheerframe windows would meet the expectations of the planners. The Sheerframe sashes, with arched heads and Georgian glazing bars, replicated the existing timber windows perfectly in the registrars office, but have non of the associated maintenance or performance problems.’

As Slimline Windows do not themselves fabricate the Sheerframe VSS they called upon the expertise and resources of systems company L.B. Plastics Ltd in order to produce the vertical sliders for the project. From its factory in Derbyshire, L.B. Plastics is able to support its network of fabricators when the project calls for more specialist products such as arched sliding sash windows.

Invisible Protection for St Joseph's

Century-old stained glass windows at Brighton’s leading Roman Catholic church are being displayed in all their glory whilst being invisibly protected from damage with help from Brett Martin’s Marlon FSX Longlife solid polycarbonate.

St Joseph’s Church, in Elm Grove, is completing a £1/2 million refurbishment of the building’s exterior fabric, including re-roofing, cleaning and repairing of stonework, and replacement of old protective glazing in front of the stained glass windows on all facades.

CWO, the specialist stonemasonry subsidiary of Geoffrey Osborne Ltd, has project-managed the scheme, with TRP Glazing of Chichester being tasked with ensuring the windows were unobtrusively protected against accidental or deliberate damage.

TRP has removed all the existing protective glazing, a combination of 6mm thick glass and polycarbonate, and replaced it with 200 shaped panels of 6mm thick Marlon FSX Longlife clear solid polycarbonate. Each panel has been carefully cut to a size of 600mm x 1900mm by plastics distributor Righton, at its Portsmouth Service Centre.

Richard Heyburn, managing director of TRP, explained, 'We needed an extremely strong material that would withstand the elements, yet be virtually invisible so the beauty of the stained glass was not obscured. It needed to cut easily into some quite intricate shapes. It also needed to comply with regulations for building, fire and Health & Safety. The quality of Marlon FSX Longlife enabled all those requirements to be met.

The 6mm thick sheet used at St Joseph’s gives light transmission of almost 90%, ensuring the light coming through the stained glass windows from behind is unaffected.' Adds Richard Heyburn, 'You cannot see the Marlon once it’s installed, which is ideal in a situation like St Joseph’s. Against the cleaned stonework, the stained windows look like new!'

Marlon FSX Longlife is manufactured in the UK by Brett Martin Ltd. It features a co-extruded UV protective layer on both sides of the sheet, which prevents 'yellowing' when exposed to the elements for years and cuts out 98% of potentially harmful UV radiation. It provides an impact resistance up to 200 times that of same-thickness plate glass, yet is only half the weight, easing installation and structural support/ glazing bar requirements. Marlon FSX Longlife is Class 1 surface spread of flame fire rated.

CAP Glazes Straight to the Point

A dramatic ‘ski slope’ entrance is just one of the £1m + worth of architectural glazing features that CAP Aluminium achieved at Castlepoint, Dorset’s newest and largest shopping park approximately  three miles from Bournemouth. The 645,000 sq ft shopping park, anchored by Asda, B&Q Warehouse, Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer had Mason Richard Partnership as architects and Kier Build as contractor.

CAP, Kawneer’s largest customer Europe-wide, used Kawneer systems for the curtain walling, doors, windows and shopfront glazing to enclose the famous high street stores. But also spectacular entrance screens have been constructed for M&S in Pilkington’s Planar structural glass system and at Sainsbury’s in Kawneer Series 1203 curtain wall.

For Sainsbury’s entrance glazing, the canopy and front elevation formed a continuous ‘ski slope’ shape. To construct this challenging design CAP had to erect scaffolding to follow the line of the slope and, working from top to bottom, the team achieved the dramatic, and technically innovative, curve specified by the architect.

Constructed in a staged programme lasting about a year, CAP was additionally responsible for the architectural glazing of the smaller stores, the lift enclosures and library. Castlepoint is a joint venture between Standard Life Investments, Castlemore Securities Limited and Threadneedle Investment Properties Limited, acting on behalf of Eagle Star Life Assurance Company Limited.

CellGlazing™ Gains Praise on Cheadle Royal Project

The latest commercial office building to be completed at a high profile business park on the outskirts of Manchester has utilised CellGlazing™ as well as other glazing systems available from MagHansen.

The HansenGroup member company supplied its curtain walling system, together with Thermestra
structural glazing and Fenster windows for the work on 'Plot 5000' at AMEC's Cheadle Royal Business Park.

The Director in charge of the project for Fairhursts, Mr Ian Fitton, comments: ‘AMEC has been developing this site, previously occupied by a hospital, for a number of years and transformed it into Manchester's premier business park. This latest property really stands out, especially at night-time, and the glazing solution is a major element to the appearance.

‘Fairhursts first saw CellGlazing
in Denmark two years ago and realised its benefits. Internally it presents a very narrow fin which you can treat and bring partitions lines to it; or if you leave it exposed it has a narrow, pleasing profile. Externally, instead of the traditional capped profile, there is this negative joint which offers a crisper appearance than most systems on the market.

‘The scheme has been very well received and there are a number of other jobs where we are likely to employ CellGlazing
in the future.’

For the AMEC building, Fairhursts employed the Thermestra
system for the main entrance area while the CellGlazing stands out on the main elevations.
MagHansen's Facad
curtain wall system also provides a striking appearance while individual fixed and opening Fenster windows complete the fenestration on the property.

MagHansen is part of the Anglo-Scandinavian HansenGroup, one of Europe's leading fenestration specialists in curtain walls, commercial windows, steel doors and fire resistant structural glazing. The Group has annual sales of some £100 million and employs over 1,000 people.

Bespoke Angular Curtain Walling from Structura UK for New Graduate Centre

Bespoke angular and sloping curtain walling was manufactured, supplied and installed by Structura UK Ltd for London Metropolitan University’s new £3.5million Graduate Centre, a striking 2-storey structure seemingly ‘tumbling’ on to the Holloway Road designed by Studio Daniel Libeskind.

The challenging contract involved Structura UK, acting as a sub-contractor to Coverite Specialist Contracting Ltd, cladding contractor, providing large, high performance, aluminium screens up to 12sq m in size, fully drained and ventilated, with toughened and tinted glass. The angular screens form large geometrical cuts, representing shards of glass, set within a built-up system of 1600 triangular stainless steel cladding panels. Costain was the main contractor.
The project team also included Cadogan Consultants, structural engineer; Gleeds, quantity surveyor; and Robinson Low Francis, project manager for London Metropolitan University.

A curtain wall engineering, windows and doors specialist, Structura UK has moved into new purpose-built offices and factory premises in Chessington.
