New
Windows Transform Welsh College
Staff
and students at a leading Welsh horticultural college are facing a warmer
winter, with the added benefit of lower heating bills, thanks to the greater
thermal efficiency of new PVC-U windows manufactured by Total
Glass and installed by Flintshire Windows Ltd.
Standing
in 91 hectares of picturesque grounds overlooking the Dee Estuary, the
Welsh College of Horticulture at Northop, North Wales is renowned as a
centre of excellence for horticulture, catering for students of all ages.
It celebrated its bi-centennial anniversary last year.
Offices and learning resources are located in the Haydn Williams building,
which includes laboratories, a library and a state-of-the-art IT and Business
Suite. The original 50-year-old single-glazed steel windows, some measuring
up to two metres square, were replaced with modern equivalents in the
building's imposing ivy-covered façade by Flintshire Windows. Manufactured
from the Profile 22 70mm bevelled profile, the forty replacement white
PVC-U casement windows incorporate Georgian bars to retain the character
and aesthetics of the old building.
The installation was not without its challenges, as Alec Garratt, one
of Flintshire Windows' directors explains: Although the sheer weight
of the larger steel windows made their removal difficult, the installation
went smoothly. All the old frames were dismantled using an angle grinder
and the steel went for recycling. To minimise disruption to the college,
the work had to be carried out during the summer break. Everything was
completed on schedule to the customer's satisfaction before the students
returned.
The college's Estate Manager, Austin Morgan, says everyone praised the
quality of workmanship and attention to detail throughout. Commenting
on the installation, he says: The fitting team showed great consideration
in working with us as some of the rooms were still in use. Replacing the
draughty old windows is a priority for us as we are concerned about rising
energy prices and their impact on our heating bills to maintain adequate
levels of comfort.
He adds: As a result, the new windows have made a huge difference
to the appearance of the building and we'll certainly feel their thermal
benefits when winter comes. They've transformed the place!
Total Glass gave technical assistance to Flintshire Windows on the window
specification as part of its customer support package which offers tailored
business advice to help its customers prosper. For further information

Kawneer
Supplies Glazing to Lincoln College
Kawneer, the manufacturer and supplier
of architectural aluminium systems, has recently contributed to the development
of Lincoln College. Designed by CAD Associates, the structure makes extensive
use of Kawneer 1202 curtain walling and 1202S structural silicone glazing,
supplied and installed by Pendant Aluminium.
Lincoln
College is a further education college situated in the heart of the historic
city. The forty-two week design and build contract in conjunction with primary
contractor Linpave Building Ltd, comprised the complete overhaul and refurbishment
of the principal college building, the Abbey Building, and extensions to
the Temple Building.
A major part of the development involved stripping back the 45,000 sq ft
five-storey structure to the original concrete frame and removing the existing
concrete panel façade. This was then replaced with Kawneers
full height 1202 and 1202S curtain walling, incorporating a feature walkable
Brise Soleil on every storey. The design also showcases a feature entrance
and atrium constructed in full height structural glazing.
Kawneers curtain walling system was specified for the development
as it met with the extreme technical constraints of the project.
The Abbey Building was originally constructed in the late 1950s and
required a great deal of attention to detail of fixings and expert specification
to give strength and durability to the old structure, which the 1202 system
provided. The 1202 system offers flexibility in design, performance and
ease of installation incorporating zone drainage as a design characteristic,
where each glazed panel is self drained. The 1202S system was specified
as it is available as a four sided structural silicone glazed system to
suit the individual project requirements and also has an opening vent option.
The use of structural silicone combined with the internal aluminium frame
allows for a flush exterior façade.
In addition to the external façade, the redevelopment also involved
extensive internal modifications including the provision of state-of the-art
science laboratories, along with new teaching areas and a refectory and
the replacement of all building services. The Temple Building, which is
home to the School of Construction, was expanded significantly during the
project.
Olav Holm-Johansen of CAD Associates commented: 'The project was quite a
challenging one as we needed to work within the structural parameters of
the existing building, while providing a brand new external identity. Kawneers
innovative products were selected for the project on the basis that the
company's systems have a proven track record, with guaranteed performance
and the ability to meet with the detailed technical specifications of the
project while being aesthetically pleasing.'
Lincoln College has recently been awarded Centre of Vocational Excellence
status as part of a national initiative by the Learning and Skills Council.
This will provide opportunities for capital and revenue investment in the
College facilities and will help satisfy the high demand for construction
training in the region.
REHAU-Polytec
50 Chosen by Berkeley Homes
Berkeley
Homes latest development of luxury apartments in Aylesbury, Bucks
features the UKs first multi-faceted installation in the REHAU-Polytec
50 PVC-U curtain walling system.
The centrepiece of the new Observatory development is a multi-storey,
circular glazed tower which would traditionally have been fabricated using
aluminium.
However, REHAU and its installer Express Glass and Glazing worked closely
with Berkeley Homes to design and install the tower in PVC-U as a more
modern and cost effective alternative.
The 14 metre glazed tower is a feature of many of the 45 apartment interiors
and also forms a rooftop solarium and gives access to a luxurious roof
terrace.
The REHAU-Polytec 50 system was launched in the UK market in 2004 and
is winning acceptance amongst specifiers and developers as a fast and
easy solution for multi-storey curtain walls. The company says that it
has slimmer sight lines than previous PVC-U systems and competes head
on with aluminium in terms of performance and durability.
This is the largest single installation yet completed in the new system
but other recent projects have included similar new build residential
developments, individual bespoke properties and commercial buildings.
Alongside the REHAU-Polytec 50 curtain walling, Express has also installed
more than 700 windows fabricated in REHAUs S706 70mm system in the
remainder of the Berkeley Homes development.

Artisan
Installs Masterframe Sashes in Conservation Area B&B for Over £1000
a Window
Denbigh-based
Artisan Conservatories, Windows and Doors recently replaced 10 windows
with Masterframe's Bygone Collection
PVC-U sashes in a townhouse in Conwy.
The property is a Bed and Breakfast in a world heritage site within
the walls of Conwy Castle, explains Artisan's owner, Ian Gibson.
It's a beautiful conservation area. We took a sample window to the
planning department so they could be sure that these windows were in keeping
with the property, and complied with building regulations. The customer,
Mr Naughton, paid over £1,000 a window - the margins on Masterframe's
sashes are impressive.

(L-R)
The Town House before and after
Mr
Naughton says the benefits outweigh the costs: The windows are superb.
They're in keeping with the original Victorian style of the timber sashes
we had taken out. They look like traditional sash windows but noise is
reduced, and they're easy to clean. Our B&B, The Town House, is three
stories high on a busy main road, so noise was a problem.
'We
also couldn't get them cleaned because the window cleaner's ladder would
have to be in the middle of the road - far too dangerous. Customers who
have been visiting our B&B for years have been surprised at how much
difference the windows have made to the house. It not only looks better,
it's much quieter inside too.

Beaufort
takes Temple Sky High
The
refurbishment of a high-rise housing block in north London includes aluminium
windows and doors from Beaufort Secure Design.
Harlow-based Temple Windows recently completed the £330,000 fenestration
contract for Green Horizons Housing as part of the company's ongoing regeneration
of the properties it manages in Edmonton for the benefit of residents
and the wider community.
The
Beaufort aluminium system replaces high maintenance timber frames at the
26-storey Mendip House. A durable solution that requires just a wash and
wipe, aluminium is naturally resistant to corrosion and discolouration
- all of which add up to lower maintenance costs. In addition, the Beaufort
range offers thermal efficiency in accordance with Document L, which also
means lower fuel bills for residents. Ray Dennis, founder of Temple Windows,
comments, A number of blocks in the area have been refurbished using
other systems, but Green Horizons Housing felt that the Beaufort product
was superior in terms of strength, durability and appearance.
A total of 441 externally glazed aluminium window units and side screens
have been installed at Mendip House, together with 172 double doors fitted
to gain entry to the balconys and 10 entrance doors in a complementary
design. A classic casement window style was specified from Beaufort's
70mm deep direct fix outer frame system, with slimline transoms to maintain
equal sightlines. A brilliant white finish was chosen from a comprehensive
range of standard and special colours. The specification of soft coat
glass, argon gas filled sealed units ensures full compliance with current
Building Regulations on U values.
All work had to be carried out quickly and efficiently as tenants remained
in occupation throughout the refurbishment. Also, access to the site and
secure storage facilities were severely restricted as the block is located
within the Edmonton Green complex, with a shopping precinct and offices
at ground level. Ray continues, Dependable service and back-up from
Beaufort helped a difficult job to run smoothly and with minimal disruption
to residents.
Ray and his experienced team have undertaken hundreds of quality commercial
and thousands of domestic installations. Temple started fabricating the
Beaufort aluminium system about four years ago and finds it suitable for
all types of new build and refurbishment project, from tower blocks and
offices to schools and hospitals. Indeed, Temple reports a significant
rise in sales since taking on the Beaufort system, Beaufort's high
performance product range and excellent technical support has certainly
played a key role in securing contracts, concludes Ray.

CGI's
Pyroguard fire glass is helping to ensure safe working conditions at Vauxhall's
Ellesmere Port car plant. Wirral-based John Knight Glazing, the specialist
glazing arm of John Knight Glass, has installed Pyroguard 7.2mm Wired
fire glass in manual and robotic spray paint booths. The 60-minute integrity
rated glass is also used to provide fire resistant screens along walkways
and in other assembly areas where there is a potential hazard from fire
or explosion.
Vauxhall's
Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire operates 24 hours a day and has an annual
production capacity of more than 180,000 vehicles. John Knight Glazing
has an ongoing contract with the plant to install Pyroguard fire glass
in any new facilities as required, as well as to replace glass in the
event of breakages. And CGI can supply the Pyroguard glass conveniently
sized cut-able sheets, which makes for quick and easy installation on
site, comments Steve Gurnell, Managing Director of John Knight Glazing.
Pyroguard 7.2 mm Wired fire glass has been selected by Vauxhall as it
meets the plant's required fire safety specification. The glass is a 3
ply wired stockable laminated fire glass with the added benefit of radiated
heat, provided by a specially formulated resin interlayer. As well as
being fire resistance tested to BS 476: part 22, the Pyroguard range has
been successfully tested to EN 1353-1 and other international standards:
it is classified E30/EW30 to EN 13501-2. The glass is also impact safety
certified to BS6206 Class B and EN 12600 Class 2.
In addition to the 7.2mm Wired fire glass specified by Vauxhall, CGI's
Pyroguard is available in a clear version, and 11.4mm thickness. The range
also now includes a choice of Satin, Master or Stippolyte finish. Pyroguard
is widely available from CGI's nationwide stockist network.
John Knight Glazing has been a CGI stockist for approximately ten years.
Steve concludes: In addition to offering high performance products
that are competitively priced, CGI is also very helpful and informative
when it comes to advice on specification, and is always able to meet our
delivery deadlines.

Complete
New Building Envelope for One of Glasgow's Largest Office Schemes
The
refurbishment of one of the largest office buildings in Glasgow has been
completed. 3,500sqm of Technal's high
performance aluminium curtain walling was fabricated and installed by
Systems Aluminium in a £2.5m contract to replace the entire façade
of Buchanan House.
Built
in the 1960s, the 10-storey building is the Scottish headquarters of Network
Rail and was refurbished and extended by developers Stannifer. An additional
floor was added to the north wing, bringing the total office accommodation
to around 245,000sqft.
Project architects, Coomer Cromar designed a completely new envelope for
this prominent building, which has transformed its appearance into a modern,
high tech landmark and contributed to the rejuvenation of the city centre.
Curtain walling systems from architectural aluminium specialists, Technal,
were specified for a combination of performance and value. Three variations
of the MC suite carry large 3.6m wide spans of 28mm double glazing.
MC grid, and MC Trame Horizontale and Verticale curtain walling were suspended
from a secondary steel structure, which wraps around the building's original
concrete frame. Unusually, the entire façade was installed from
the roof downwards and mast climbers were used for the final phase to
remove the need for scaffolding.
Smoke grey reflective anti-sun glass was selected for the project to complement
the dark grey aluminium profiles of the curtain walling. Technal also
supplied top hung FXi casement windows, which were inserted into MC Trame
Verticale on the gable ends of the building.
The MC Trame system will accommodate from 6mm to 32mm glazing, and gives
specifiers the choice of accentuating the vertical or horizontal lines
across the building envelope using distinctive aerofoil profiles. Other
options in the MC range include standard grid curtain walling, sloped,
faceted and roof glazing, and top hung or tilt/turn concealed vents to
offer natural ventilation whilst maintaining a continuous flat façade.
