Paladin's
a Fibre Class Act
Cheltenham-based
Portal Products has launched a GRP
version of its Paladin composite door to meet demand for a sturdy, yet
good-looking product in this fast-growing sector. Portal says the addition
of the fibreglass door completes its product range to maintain its niche
as a one-stop shop supplier to installers.
Recently, GRP has become an increasingly popular choice for entrance doors
due to its inherent strength and high resistance to denting, warping or
twisting. The strength of the material is testament to its use in the
manufacture of racing cars, speedboats and even British Army tanks.
Portal Products offers its customers a totally bespoke service in size,
style and glazing options for the GRP door. Frames are also supplied so
that installers can simply order a complete door set and fit on site.
All GRP Paladin doors can be painted to any RAL colour and with up to
six times greater heat insulation than a comparable timber door, the product
meets the requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations.
Portals Managing Director, Peter Shears, comments: 'Were delighted
to be able to expand our product range even further with the launch of
the GRP door which perfectly complements our range.
'Our sales have also grown through targeting smaller independent fabricators
who often cater for niche markets. With our comprehensive range of door
types, styles and decorative glass, we aim to provide customers with a
wide choice of products.'
Portals portfolio comprises aluminium panels, PVCu panels, plus
Paladin GRP and composite doors, giving the company flexibility to cater
for all markets.
Similarly, the launch of new products such as Amatis and the resin-bevelled
glass range has also increased the appeal, and sales, of the range.

EZ
Egress Friction Stay Helps Installations Fulfil FENSA Regulations
In
anticipation of a rise in demand for egress stays followinq the creation
of the FENSA scheme, hardware manufacturer Mila
Hardware has developed a new friction stay for side hung casement
windows which can provide both easy clean and egress functions. The EZ
Egress Friction Stay offers safer cleaning of the external glass from
the inside and allows most casement windows to open to almost 90°,
acting as an emergency exit where necessary.
A key element of FENSA membership is that installations should comply
with the most up-to-date building regulations, including Part B relating
to emergency access and means of escape in case of fire. Part B dictates
that any egress window should have an unobstructed, openable area that
is at least 0.33m square and at least 450mm high and 450mm wide. In order
to achieve this on the majority of casement windows, an egress stay is
required which allows the window to open to 90°. Currently the most
common reason for failure following FENSA inspection is failing to meet
these requirements.
Mila's new EZ Egress Friction Stay is able to achieve this function without
the need for any special tools or reset kits, easily engaging the sash
into the egress position every time it is required.
In addltion, the EZ Egress Friction Stay also allows the sash to be moved
along the track to an easy-clean position for safer cleaning of the external
glass from the inside. A function that is particularly useful for high-rise
buildings where exterior access to the window is limited, the easy-clean
facillty of the EZ stay also meets the requirements of BS 8213, which
states that a minimum 95mm gap must exist between the casement and frame.
Pulling the handle automatically closes the sash and re-sets the window
without any difficulty.
Manufactured from either ferritic or austenitic stainless steel, the EZ
Egress Friction Stay is available in both 13mm and 17mm stack heights
to suit most major profile systems.

New
Glass Bead Tool from BeA
BeA
Fastening Systems,
manufacturer and supplier of performance led pneumatic tools and fasteners,
has launched a tool which has the capacity to invisibly secure nail mouldings
onto timber frames. With the BeA Glazier, it is now possible to produce
glazed windows and doors with all fasteners concealed.
'Accuracy,
speed, efficiency, performance and ease-of-use are just a few of the principal
features which sum up BeA's SK335-201-GL glass bead tool.' says the company.
The new tool has been carefully engineered and features an adjustable
bracket guide plate, manufactured from hardened steel, which controls
the insertion angle and ensures precise operation whilst preventing damage
to the glass. The angled plate deflects the nail as it enters the timber
to ensure it is hidden away securely.
It is also possible to adjust the travel of the brad into the glass bead
and the frame section. Furthermore, the tool nose is padded to protect
the glass.
The ergonomics of the tool means that it is operator-friendly - it is
weight balanced to reduce wrist strain, easy to load and quiet. Small
and compact, the tool is manageable, proficient and safe. The presence
of a safety trap prevents the tool from operating when the magazine is
empty.
The glass bead tool works in conjunction with SK319 NR, SK325 NR, SK330
NR and SK335 NR brads in lengths from 19 to 35mm, which are non-corrosive
and acid resistance for longevity. The brads are hardwearing and have
no weak points.
'Traditional methods of glazing timber frame windows meant that pin and
nail heads were easily visibly. This created work for glaziers, adopting
numerous methods to conceal the fasteners,' commented Brian Lund, national
sales manager, BeA Fastening Systems Limited. 'By introducing the new
glazier tool, window manufacturers can now greatly improve the aesthetics
of the finished product with relative ease.'

Ultraframe's
new Conservaglass Range Delivers Shattering Performance, Price and
Delivery
Following
the success of Conservaglass, Ultraframe's
high performance dedicated conservatory glazing system, the company has
launched a full range of insulating Double Glazed Units (DGUs) at all
specification and price points.
The new Conservaglass range makes Ultraframe, the international
designer and manufacturer of conservatory systems, a single source for
all conservatory roofs and glass - removing the worries, hassles and time
wasted associated with mis-measurement or in dealing with cardboard templates
and separate suppliers. It also offers fabricators and installers price
savings all the way down the line, bringing better profit margin and business
opportunities.
The Conservaglass range from Ultraframe consists of three sealed
unit products:
Conservaglass Optimum - the 'original' Conservaglass
- offers a combination of performance characteristics and 'future proofs'
the sector against any potential changes to the Building Regulations.
Conservaglass Premium - available in Azure tint or
clear - tackles the twin problem of over-heating in summer and retaining
warmth in winter.
Conservaglass Classic toughened glass sealed units
offer the convenience of 'one stop' sourcing.
The three sealed units are the glass DGU complement to Polyspan, Ultraframe's
polycarbonate glazing system.
Conservaglass Optimum
Conservaglass Optimum offers five benefits in combination. It simultaneously
offers thermal performance and lower solar heat gain. A 'peel clean' factory
film helps instailers to handover pristine conservatories, while an 'easy
clean' finish reduces homeowner maintenance. Conservaglass Optimum
DGUs are also guaranteed for 20 years - double the typical industry norm.
Available in ex-stock sizes in five days - or in six weeks for bespoke
applications - Conservaglass Optimum comes in two versions for roof
or walls, with roof DGUs having a slight tint to help solar glare reduction.
Conservaglass Premium
Argon-filled, Conservaglass Premium has thermal and transmission
performance characteristics - such as a U Value of 1.1Wm 2K-1 - approaching
that of Conservaglass Optimum. It also offers similar performance
in terms of reduced solar heat gain, and UV and light transmission.
'Conservaglass Premium is less expensive than other similar competitive
performance glass offers, while offering class-leading all round performance.'
says the company.
Featuring aluminium, rather than stainless steel, spacer bars and without
Conservaglass Optimum's peel or easy clean finishes, Conservaglass
Premium is guaranteed for the industry standard of 10 years and is available
for delivery in five days from order.
Conservaglass Premium Azure is suitable for conservatory roofs -
featuring a
slight blue tint to help reduce solar glare, while Conservaglass
Premium Clear is suitable for walls and side frames.
Conservaglass Classic
Conservaglass Classic toughened glass sealed units are standard
aluminium-spaced and air filled DGUs - delivered in five days from order
and with an industry-norm 10-year guarantee - that allow fabricators and
installers to source all their conservatory glazing from a single 'one
stop shop', backed by the confidence gained from dealing with Ultraframe's
pedigree of 20 years design and manufacturing experience.
All Conservaglass sealed units are manufactured, and fully Kite
Marked, to BS EN 5713: 1979 - the standard for hermetically sealed flat
double glazing units - while the glass is toughened to BS EN 6206, the
standard for impact performande of safety glazing in buildings.
Conservaglass - only available from Ultraframe - provides high quality
insulating DGUs at all performance levels and price points; while simultaneously
offering 'single source' convenience.

Prefabricated
Building Boost for High Performance Tapes
Renewed
emphasis on the value of prefabrication in building and the population's
increasing amount of leisure time are together serving to boost the use
of high performance tapes manufactured by Tremco.
Tremlok 500, Polyshim and Tremco's 440 Tape provide the characteristics
required by firms specialising in producing portable or relocatable buildings
as well as static caravans. Responding to the demand, Tremco is launching
the three glazing tapes to these sectors, backed up by new product literature
and the support of the company's technical advisory service.
Tremco 440 Tape is intended for use in the compression glazing of timber
windows and doors, being simple to use and offering good adhesion to most
paints or woolstains. It can also be employed for the sealing of steel,
aluminium or other types of panels and permits the immediate handling
of frames required elsewhere on the assembly line.
Tremlok 500 provides an even higher level of security in terms of preventing
the deglazing of frames by would be intruders, importantly facilitating
compliance with the requirements of BS 7950 - the standard covering improved
window security. The product is suitable for sealing bedding glass in
aluminium, timber or PVCu door and window frames.
Finally, Polyshim is a cross-linked butyl strip incorporating a continuous
EPDM shimcord, supplied on fast release paper. The integral shim helps
transfer wind loading from the glass to the frame and makes Polyshim suitable
for use in most weather conditions, while it can even be utilised for
areas of sloped glazing.

New
Fire Resisting Glazing System Provides Exciting Design Options
A
new specialist glazing system from Vetrotech
Saint-Gobain, the manufacturer of fire resistant glasses, has
been announced. SGG Swissflam Structure has been developed specifically
to give architects a new option to incorporate fire glass into their designs.
The
specialist glass offers maximum transparency, as each sheet only requires
the slimmest of connections - an aesthetic glazing solution for internal
applications such as partition walls in offices or shopping centres.
The new Class A glazing system now allows Vetrotech Saint-Gobain to offer
a total solution for fire resistance - with a stable of glasses to cover
any application.
The new slimline glass offers a new level of decorative freedom, with
sheets of the glass only needing to be connected bv a very thin discreet
border - the smallest H-profile gasket or silicone seal joint.
SGG Swissflam Structure gives an enhanced clear vision area and maximises
illumination - providing designers with a safe but completely new design
option.
'This new glass also means that Vetrotech Saint-Gobain can provide a one-stop-shop
for specificers, architects and designers for all internal and extemal
applications, with a technical support service that is second to none,'
said Piers Walsh, Commercial Manager.
SGG Swissflam Structure, which can either be dry or wet glazed, is offered
in two thicknesses of either 22mm or 31mm. made up from sheets of SGG
Swissflam N2 glass with a clear and colourless intumescent interlayer.
The system can be installed into timber, steel or aluminium framing.
In the event of fire, the interlayers turn opaque and expand to form a
fully insulating heat shield, reducing the transmission of radiated and
conducted heat and providing at least 30 minutes of fire resistance in
accordance with European Norms to E1 classification.
In addition, the glazing system can further incorporate several types
of decorative or privacv treatments - for example, SGG Priva Lite which,
at the press of a switch, provides instant privacy.
'This is an enormously important announcement for us as it now means that
we can supply glass or glazing systems for all intemal and external applications
where fire resistance is required,' said Piers Walsh.
'Whatever the requirement, we have the product or system, backed up by
the experience and technical excellence of one ofthe world's largest companies,'
he added.
