Solaglas Now Offering SGG PLANITHERM® TOTAL 1.3 in SSS Dimensions

Following on from the successful launch of SGG PLANITHERM® TOTAL 1.3 last summer, Solaglas is now able to offer this exceedingly neutral and high performance, toughenable soft coat low-E glass in SSS dimensions – 1070mm x 2440mm, 1220mm x 2440mm, 1605mm x 2440mm. These dimensions match those of the company’s float SSS dimensions, facilitating optimisation.

‘SGG PLANITHERM® TOTAL 1.3 was specifically developed to have a durable coating, making it far easier to handle and process. This, combined with a full support programme for our SSS customers, means that the transition to soft-coats is actually simple and cost-effective.’ says the company.

The Solaglas support programme includes:

• A simple self-assessment form for customers, which dispels the myths that surround soft-coat low-E glass and allows companies to verify how ready they are already to process SGG PLANITHERM® TOTAL 1.3 – more ready than most would think!
• A list of useful handling and processing accessories, along with details of where these can be purchased.
• Technical support in the form of a basic audit of customer’s processing facilities – to ensure that simple handling and processing considerations are in place.
• Local supply of toughened SGG PLANITHERM® TOTAL 1.3.
• Marketing support materials, to assist customers in selling this high performance product to their customers.

‘Solaglas is the most experienced processor of soft coat low-E glass in the UK and we are therefore able to considerably assist our customers in their transition.

‘What’s in it for our customers? Well, SGG PLANITHERM® is the best-selling low-E glass brand across Europe. It out-sells any other low-E brand of glass. The reasons for this are simple – it is one of the best-looking (most neutral) options on the market and it has much better insulation properties than the traditional hard coat products. Why choose ‘Yellow-E’ glass when you can choose a neutral, more insulating product? The general public love the neutral appearance when they see it.’

Vector Builds New Business Opportunity

A specially adapted version of Windowlink’s Vector design-to-sell conservatory package is playing a key role in a pioneering approach to building home extensions. The Midshire Spacemaker build system, developed by Steve Ford, uses construction techniques to add a single-storey extension to a house in just 7 - 10 days.

Midshire Spacemaker offers a fast track route to adding an extra room, such as a home office, dining area or playroom. All designs comply with building regulations and are inspected and certified by the local authority. Steve has worked closely with Windowlink’s programming team in order to customise Vector to meet his specific requirements, ‘I’d come across Vector when I was a conservatory installer and knew it was a very powerful and flexible program, so I had no hesitation in approaching Windowlink about expanding its application to my new business venture of timber-framed extensions, and the company was very receptive,’ comments Steve. Just like the Vector range of software for conservatories, the Spacemaker version enables the speedy production of professional sales presentations with 3D drawings that can be viewed from any angle on screen, plus photo-quality print outs.

With Vector loaded on to a laptop computer the Spacemaker sales team can design an extension alongside the customer in their home. All aspects can be displayed on screen using Vector’s comprehensive library of features, including doors, windows and even bricks and roof tiles to match the house. ‘It’s an invaluable sales tool – and because there’s no need for a traditional set of architect drawings at the point of sale, the job can’t be taken to a competitor for another quote!’ adds Steve.

Following a successful trial period, Steve is now looking to set up a franchise scheme for his innovative build concept and believes Vector represents an essential part of the Spacemaker package. ‘No matter how good your product is, you still need to be able to present it professionally to clinch a sale and that’s where Vector can provide that all-important competitive edge.’

New UKae Plugs and Sleeves Increase Speed and Efficiency

Continuing its research into the potential ‘weak spots’ of spacer bar frames, UKae Ltd – the UK manufacturer of consumables for the sealed unit industry – has introduced two new spacer accessories that will both speed up production and increase efficiency.

With gas filling now standard practice in the wake of the recently introduced Document L Building Regulations, UKae has introduced a new spacer bar plug. Measuring 8.9mm in diameter, the new plug allows the frame to be connected to larger gas filling stations, resulting in a faster fill rate. The design of the new plug also allows the finished sealed unit to be more efficient in retaining the gas, resulting in improved long-term thermal performance.

In addition, UKae has also produced a sleeve that is designed to be an exact match in height for its range of spacer bar. A common problem experienced in sealed unit manufacture is that only one sleeve is available to fit all the different types of spacer bar. This means that the sleeve can often stand proud of the spacer bar in height by around 1 – 2mm, making butyl sealant application difficult. The height of the new UKae sleeve precisely matches the height of its entire spacer bar range, removing this problem and allowing butyl to be applied more quickly and efficiently.

The spacer bar plugs and sleeves are available in black, gold and grey colours. For samples and further information, call UKae on 0121 313 3010.

Synseal’s New Starter Bar Houses Lead Trim Tray

Nick Dutton, Sales & Marketing Director of Synseal Extrusions Ltd, explains the benefits of the new Global starter bar: ‘It saves even more time on the installation process. But that’s secondary to the finish in the most specialised area, lead flashing. When the glazing bar has been fastened to the wall the lead flashing simply drops into the glazing bar. The sculptured top cap knocks on, in exactly the same way. The starter bar leaves a perfect lead flashing line seamlessly connecting house and conservatory.’

The new improved product incorporates the soaker tray and the lead dresses directly into it, not over the top. Because the drainage channels in Global glazing bars are never drilled, the water can safely drain directly through the channel into the gutter.

Huntsman Enters Aliphatic TPU Film Market

Huntsman Polyurethanes is a specialist in the development, manufacture and marketing of high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) resins, and recently announced a major strengthening of its commitment to the expanding global glass laminating industry with a move into the optical-aliphatic (OA) film market.

Huntsman has taken this strategic step to more effectively support its customers in their ongoing quest for ever-better laminates. The move was prompted by an in-depth survey of laminators which revealed overwhelming demand for a 'one-stop-shop' for all laminating industry needs, from product definition to film supply. With its technical expertise and global supply chain resources, Huntsman is qualified to meet the need for fast and reliable supply of high-performance products that deliver competitive advantage across a wide range of glass laminate applications.

From 1st May 2005 glass laminators can obtain Huntsman OA TPU films directly from Huntsman or its global distributors. The films, made from Huntsman's high-performance resins, will be marketed worldwide under the Krystalflex™ brand and manufactured exclusively by authorised film extruders.

Thomas J. Hayes, Optical Aliphatic Business Manager for Huntsman Polyurethanes, explains, ‘This is a very positive move for the laminating industry. Our research clearly indicated that Huntsman could best support laminators by moving downstream to bring OA film distribution into its business model. Huntsman will thus be able to exercise greater control over film quality and enforce rigorous specifications. By working in direct partnership with Huntsman, customers will also benefit from the significant value added by the company's 20+ years of experience, its expertise in application development and excellent technical support.’

As a result of the development, Huntsman will be able to supply all of its optical film grades to customers direct or via its global distribution network. This includes Krystalflex™ films extruded from the three new aliphatic TPU resins announced at Glasstec, Germany in November 2004. Two of these, PE409 and PE 419 provide superior application flexibility at very low processing temperatures. The third, PE500/501 processes at the higher temperatures required for some critical ballistic glass applications when excellent adhesion and extraordinary toughness are essential.

‘Huntsman's Krystalflex films are light-stable, with outstanding physical properties and excellent optical clarity.’ says the company. ‘They are the industry standard for the production of interlayer laminating films used as bonding adhesives between layers of glass, polycarbonate or other dissimilar substrates. Combining these materials creates a variety of laminate composites for use across a broad range of commercial, government, automotive, security, aerospace, electronic and residential glazing applications where extremely high strength and impact resistance are required.’

Aliphatic TPU films that can be processed (autoclaved) at lower temperatures are the preferred interlayer product for the majority of glass / plastic laminations. Lower temperature processing results in higher quality laminations, lower energy use and fewer thermal stress issues in the finished composite. Huntsman says that it is the recognised leader in the development of low-temperature aliphatic TPU resins, hence the company's positioning that ‘Cooler Is Better.’

Fittings for Frameless Glass Doors & Panels - The Hafele Standard Range

Hafele UK has expanded its range of rail and patch fittings for frameless glass pivot doors and fixed panels, called the Hafele Standard Range.

Fittings for frameless glass doors are classified according to the styleof fitting used as types A,B or C.

Type A doors incorporate a full length rail at the top and the bottom of the door, this is normally 76mm high for 8-12mm glass and 105mm high for 15 or 19mm glass. The rail clamps the glass panel and cover plates are then fitted along with matching end caps, because the glass is clamped no cut-outs are required. Once the panel has been fitted with the rails, it can be fitted to either a pivoting assembly for swinging doors, or to a top and bottom filler section for fixed panels. The advantage of using Type A doors is increased stability from having a continuous fitting holding the top and bottom of the door, which means panels up to 140kgs and 1400mm wide by 2800mm high can be used Weather seals can also be fitted into the rail, which is common when used on commercial applications. A deadlock can also be incorporated into the rail which can be operated by a key or a magnetic lock as part of an access control system.

Type C doors are the most popular option, instead of using a full length rail across the door, a small patch is fitted at the top and the bottom of the panel. Patch fittings can be used for toughened glass thickness from 8 to 19mm, with panels weights up to a maximum of 120kgs and a maximum height and width of 2800mm. The advantage of using patch fittings is that more glass is visible giving a truly frameless effect, and a combination of fittings can be used to incorporate side and over panels, allowing the designer to create a glass wall with minimal fittings visible. Locks are fitted at the top, middle or bottom of the panel, these are Euro profile cylinder deadlocks or a latch lock operated by standard lever furniture, meaning lever handles that are used on wooden doors in a project can be matched to the frameless glass doors.

Type B doors are simply a combination of the other two designs, using a rail at the bottom and a patch fitting at the top of the door. A Type B combination would be used for a number of reasons, if patch fittings are preferred but a rail is need to house a electric magnetic lock or the panel needs the extra stability of rails but an overpanel patch is required. All fittings are supplied in 316 grade stainless steel, with the cover plates in satin or polished stainless steel as standard, other finish's are available to order.

Gary King of Hafele UK, who is responsible for the architectural glass fitting range can provide full technical advice and after sales back up, to architects designers and installers, including a free scheduling service for glass fittings and other related ironmongery.

New Anti-Ligature Hardware for Sapa Dualframe Window System

New hardware introduced on Sapa Building Systems’ Dualframe Vertical Sliding Window combines ease of operation with anti-ligature design.

New recessed sash pulls that have been designed to fit to both the bottom and top rails of the sliding window help to ensure that the sashes can be raised and lowered with the minimum of effort.

The built-in anti-ligature design will meet the specific demands of projects where the building occupants need to be protected but where there is still a requirement for windows to be opened. Hospitals and detention units in particular regard anti-ligature hardware as a fundamental requirement of their window and door systems’ specification.

Mark Robinson, Technical Manager for Sapa commented: ‘The introduction of the new design recessed pulls for the Vertical Sliding Window is just part of our range of anti-ligature hardware that features across the whole Dualframe range and has already led to many projects being specified where this need was paramount. We believe it vastly improves the appeal of the whole system to these markets’.
