Preserve the Lustre

The glossiness of new PVC frames - for windows, doors and conservatories - can be preserved using a new coating, Liquidtec, from CXL Ltd.

Developed by CXL Ltd, the environmentaily-friendly coating forms a protective layer on the surface of the PVC, helping repel dirt from becoming ingrained and the plastic becoming dull- a common problem once it has been exposed to the elements for only months.

Water-based, Liquidtec is simply brushed or wiped on as the PVC protective film is removed.

Opaque when applied, so treated areas can be easily seen, it dries in minutes to a clear gloss finish. Independent testing has shown the treatment lasts at least 12 months, even when subjected to extreme conditions such as those experienced in the marine industry.

Liquidtec is available in 250ml bottles, and supplied complete with applicator, which enables accurate product application without the need to 'mask' around the frame. Concentrated, even a 250ml bottle should cover all PVC window and door frames on an average three-bedroomed home. Yet it retails for £12 + P&P for a 250ml bottle.

Comments Liquidtec, 'Applied to clean plastic - be it PVC, GRP, ABS or fibreglass, Liquidtec creates a protective barrier, making the plastic look like new even a year after it has been exposed to the elements.

'Because it is water based, there are no chemicals to attack the plastic surface and accelerate degradation. We have carefully researched its application, to make it as easy and accurate as possible to apply. As a result, it takes literally seconds to treat a frame, with minimal risk of abutting surfaces.

'lt gives the window industry an added selling tool that installers can use themselves to ensure their instailations look better, longer, and that they can sell to their customers.'

Liquidtec is available to order from CXL Ltd, PO Box 112, Colwyn Bay LL28 5ZS

Mahogany Shape Retention

The Sky-Vent product is of a hybrid design comprising of an aluminium lid for shape retention and a fully welded internal PVCu frame.

'It is the only roof vent on the market with this type of dual material concept utilising the best of both worlds for maximum weather performance. Hot summer sun can lead to warping and twisted PVCu profile especially on the darker woodgrain colours. Subsequently the seals fail and water starts to leak in resulting in many call backs and site visits. Flimsy plastic vents often start to leak twelve months after fitting when the silicone seal has expanded and contrated for a full season. With an aluminium lid this type of problem is totally eliminated for the lifetime of the conservatory.' says the company.

'The BBA have weather tested the product to BS6375 for a 300pa water tightness and pressure test. Sky-Vent is unique in the market place, it even comes with it's own 100% leak proof guarantee. Many aluminium vents are so chunky in appearance or suffer from leaky mechanical sash joints.

'An aluminium lid is a must to avoid PVCu expansion problems in the sun and eventual weather seal failure. The full width weather proof hinge allows the vent lid to detach at fifty degrees so the sash can be easily fitted between the roof bars and allow access for roof fitting via a ladder.

'48 hour delivery, made to measure and glazed in any shade of polycarbonate completes the package.'

Synseal’s extraordinary support

Synseal Extrusions Ltd launched its Global Blue roof at Glassex, the new blue white roof solution for fabricators whose suppliers simply haven’t been able to keep up with the changing conservatory market.

To accompany the launch, the systems company has distributed 173 sample boxes. The boxes include outer frame sections of profile along with the identical matched Global rafter top cap.

Kevin Harvey, Director of Sales explains why Synseal goes to such lengths with its marketing support. 'We use extraordinary support like this because we know fabricators of other systems companies are crying out for a conservatory roof that will colour match their profile.

' It enables prospects to see how well matched the roof is. We are optimistic about Global Blue and estimate that within 8-12 weeks we will be selling in excess of 100 extra Global roof kits per week. Most of this will be as a direct result of our unusual marketing approach.'

Mila established the brand to offer products that represent Quality, Value and Reliability - hence Trinity – so that buyers could be assured that any products under this brand would enjoy quality usually only found in premium ranges, but at competitive prices.

CombiSystem - the New Patented Handle System from HEWI Optimises Assembly and Storage

With its CombiSystem HEWI aims to optimise its presence in the market for special-size handles. Against the backdrop of long delivery periods, the manufacturers’ high start-up costs and lack of centre-to-centre sizes in the precise millimetre sector, the company has developed a modular system for stainless steel handles.

‘This incomparable modular system enables us to offer traders and processors solutions for everyday, practical situations. CombiSystem offers immediate access to all centre-to-centre sizes. Optimum flexibility of assembly has been achieved’, product manager Tobias Kahl explained.

HEWI CombiSystem allows handles of various shapes and centre-to-centre sizes to be assembled from just a few components, minimising storage requirements and optimising availability. The patented connection system offers a high degree of flexibility and simple assembly without special assembly aids being needed. The individual components can be easily shortened on site with a saw. No welding work is required – a decorative ring covers the sawn edge and ‘forgives’ imprecision.

The introductory collection comprises eight components, with which the six most common handle shapes can be configured to feature any centre-to-centre size needed. CombiSystem can be integrated with the existing collection and marries with the HEWI stainless steel ranges 111X and 160X.

The advantages of CombiSystem:
1. Variability – a variety of handle shapes can be as-sembled from the various individual components.
2. Precision – the connection interfaces are fitted with a decorative ring that covers the sawn edges.
3. Ease of assembly – assembly and dismantling can be performed without any difficulty. The stainless steel tubes can be cut to size directly on site.
4. Availability – good availability as components are standard.
5. Reduced storage – all handle shapes and lengths can be made form eight individual components.
6. Good value for money – as compared with con-ventional special-size products.

Innovation for New Build

One of the fastest growing markets for the PVCu window industry is New Build. But with streams of red tape and regulations, it’s a difficult market to break. Innovation, time saving and quality are all top of the list in this sector. Newstead Trade Frames believes in giving New Build installers a competitive edge by providing all three without compromise.

‘The latest innovation we are able to offer customers is a new cavity closure system called Cavseal,’ explains Paul Baker, Operations Manager of Newstead. ‘The 70mm system, designed by Synseal Extrusions Ltd, can be installed in the window from inside the building, eliminating the need for installers to climb ladders. The flexible design solution improves thermal efficiency and compliance with building regulations.’

Colour-Matched Glazing Cassettes from Evergreen

Evergreen Door, the UK composite door component supplier, has launched pre-finished glazing cassettes to match door skin colours of its GRP and steel-faced ranges.

Available in red, blue, green and white as well as two woodgrain finishes, the cassettes give an overall co-ordinated and authentic look to the finished door. The company says that the age-old problem associated with painted cassettes is eliminated by the introduction of the new Evergreen paint system which is very hard-wearing and does not flake or chip.

Evergreen claims that its GRP door is the only through-colour fibreglass entrance door on the market and sales are steadily rising through its nationwide fabricator network.

Capable of withstanding the hardest knocks, weight for weight GRP is stronger than steel giving immense resistance to everyday wear and tear.

Evergreen's GRP doors are available in ten styles, including a cottage door, and four through colours - red, green, blue and white with either smooth or grained surfaces.

Grained surfaces can be stained in either mahogany, walnut, teak and light oak finishes to replicate the appearance of a timber door.

With up to six times greater heat insulation than a comparable timber door, GRP is suitable for all applications, particularly in meeting the requirements of Part L of the Building Regulations.

Like all Evergreen entrance doors, the new GRP range has passed rigorous testing to achieve the PAS 23 and PAS 24 quality and security standards. It is fully guaranteed for 10 years, the GRP door will not dent, crack, split or warp.

Evergreen's Managing Director, Robert Benn, comments: ‘The pre-finished cassettes allow fabricators to achieve a totally colour-matched door which in turn we're sure will prove popular with homeowners seeking a smart overall finish.’

Evergreen can now supply fabricators with the complete package of components to fit its entire door range. The company manufactures and supplies composite door components to fabricators for use in the home improvement, public sector and newbuild markets.

Evergreen Door holds the ISO 9002 quality standard and is a Secured by Design licensee.

Cotswold Introduces Fabricator and FENSA Friendly Friction Stays

Cotswold Architectural Products Ltd has developed a new friction stay to help fabricators meet the increasingly stringent building regulations for easy cleaning and egress. The EZ Egress friction stay, which has been designed specifically for side hung casement windows, allows the window to be opened to almost 90 degrees, fulfilling Part B regulations ensuring emergency access and means of escape in case of a fire.

Cotswold believes that it is the responsibility of hardware manufacturers to educate fabricators about the changing and often complex British and European fenestration standards that must be met according to FENSA regulations. The company's EZ Egress friction stay goes a long way to helping fabricators manufacture compliant products.

When fitted with the Egress EZ friction stay, a casement window of the optimum size has an unobstructed operable area that is at least 0.33m square, 450mm high and 450mm wide, allowing for emergency exits if necessary.

The EZ Egress friction stay is also suitable for high rise buildings, as it allows for safer cleaning of the external glass from the inside. The design of the stay enables the sash to be moved along the track to an easy cleaning position, meeting the requirements of BS8213, which states that a minimum 95mm gap must exist between the casement and the frame.

Pilkington Tried and Tested Fire Resistant Glass Grows from Strength to Strength

As part of its constant undertaking to develop products suited to the changing demands of building design and performance, Pilkington has developed new 23mm Pilkington Pyrostop fire resistant glass.

Successfully tested up to 60 minutes integrity and insulation, the new product now allows far larger panels of glass to be constructed whilst still retaining the fire resistant properties of the Pilkington Pyrostop brand.

Tested in sizes up to 1495mm x 2895mm, Pilkington Pyrostop is a clear, laminated fully insulating fire and safety glass that offers the highest levels of fire protection. It provides both the integrity requirement of a barrier to smoke, hot gases and flame as well as ensuring effective insulation from the radiant heat of a blaze. Complying with the exacting temperature criteria defined in British, European and International test standards, it has an opaque insulating interlayer that blocks out fire, minimising the effect of panic and acting as a pointer for fire services to indicate the presence of a fire on the other side. Furthermore, 23mm Pilkington Pyrostop, has achieved a Class A fire safety rating in accordance with BS 6206.

In addition to being successfully tested within conventional metal and timber multi-pane screen systems (Test references WARRES 127055/ Chilt/RF03058), it is possible to achieve 120 minutes integrity and insulation by incorporating two panes of 23mm Pilkington Pyrostop within Pilkington Insulight (WARRES 117011).

23mm Pilkington Pyrostop was independently tested at the Warrington Fire Research Centre (WARRES 127055) within T W Ide Fire Products Ltd's Firesecure AP glazed screen/ partition system. The slender glass jointing profile, which is 35mm wide, fits between 76mm deep top and bottom rails and the system was constructed by T W Ide Fire Product Ltd from new revolutionary composite material.

Pilkington Pyrostop is suitable for a range of applications, typically partial or full size fire doors and partitions, glazing along escape routes, room compartmentation and façade glazing. It can also be used in windows to prevent breakout of fire and movement of fire along the outside face of a building.

Pilkington Building Products UK manufactures a wide range of float, rolled and coated glass products. Glass is distributed direct to customers and, in smaller quantities, either merchanted as stock or bespoke processed products to meet customer needs through our network of 23 branches countrywide.
