New Sentinel Thermoguard Door Features Improved Fire and Security Performance

Sentinel Doors has introduced a second generation Thermoguard Series 900 Fire Door that the company says significantly improves on the fire and security performance of the previous model.

The new door, which is being produced in volume in a dedicated new production facility, is designed specifically to meet the changing needs of RSLs and local authorities. It achieves a 30 minute fire rating whilst meeting the same industry standards (Secured by Design, PAS23 and 24), finish and appearance as Sentinel's composite doors.

Features of the construction of the new door include a solid, edge-bound core, smoke seals, improved hinges and locks giving greater security performance, and door skins produced in Sentinel's new SMC material.

Thermoguard doors are manufactured by bonding pre-formed fire retardant skins to a fire resistant core, to create a featured door leaf. Like all Sentinel doors, fire doors are virtually maintenance-free with good sound and thermal insulation properties.

Thermoguard doors are available in 44mm format, pre-installed within a hardwood outer frame to form a fire door set that is factory finished and ready for installation. The range is suitable for front and rear door installations.

The new range is available in 900, 901, 903, 904 and 907 door styles and in white, solid colours and woodgrain finishes. The doors are glazed with Pilkington Pyroshield glass, and are mechanically fixed using glazing frames that are completely air and watertight. They also offer defence against attempted forced entry. Other glass options are available if required, as is a choice of hardware.

Elumatec’s New Cutting and Machining Centre Designed and Built for the UK

Elumatec's engineers have again listened to their British customers and produced a top specification cutting and machining centre specifically for the UK market. The Elumatec SBZ615 is unique to Britain and incorporates a number of functions and features that are designed for profiles and frame types indigenous to the local market.

This machine will simultaneously cut and machine profiles with the processes dealt with in a logical flow that best suits British fabrication practices. Elumatec says that the SBZ615 is up to 60% faster than more conventional equipment, and is able to produce around 800 frames per week in a single shift system, dependent upon style and fittings.

However, although the cutting and machining centre has a huge specification and performance that is built with Elumatec's engineering quality, it remains competitive in price to bring the highest levels of automated processing within the reach of small and large fabricators alike.

Phil Heavey, Managing Director of Elumatec UK says that the machine is one of the most efficient ever created for the UK market: ‘We discovered a recurrent theme when talking to our customers, both existing and potential, in that the existing solutions available to them were expensive and often quite slow. We spoke to our engineers and they set about creating what we believe is an ideal solution for British frame cutting and machining needs.’

Get On Side with Groupco

Groupco has added the fully upgraded PN UNI Side Swing system to its range of hardware. Developed specifically for the UK market by Peder Nielsen, the Side Swing option is currently only marketed in this country by Groupco. The hardware has been enhanced to deliver even higher performance and to satisfy the latest regulations relating to emergency egress.

PN UNI Side Swing hardware is now manufactured from Austenetic Stainless Steel to BS/EN ISO 9001 for long lasting durability, and features extruded aluminium powder coated tracks for smooth movement. The fittings are designed for window sash widths from 500mm to 1100mm.

The new Side Swing hardware offers a suitable solution for a wide range of applications. It features a reverse catch for safe and easy cleaning from the inside. The re-design also satisfies current fire egress regulations and incorporates automatically engaging restrictors. A built-in anti-lift feature within bottom glider ensures additional security.

Easy to fabricate and install, the PN UNI Side Swing system requires no routering of the frame or sash. Groupco offers full training and technical support on this product and has its own Approved Fabricator Scheme.

PN UNI Side Swing hardware forms part of the PN UNI System, which includes fittings for top swing, projecting top hung, projecting side hung and side hung window styles. The universal groove fixing is suitable for use with PVCu, aluminium, timber and composite profile. And because PN UNI System hardware is designed to ensure a consistent appearance for all window styles the Side Swing option can be used alongside Topswing or other UNI gearing on the same development without compromising the overall look of the windows.

PN UNI Side Swing hardware has been designed to satisfy the specific demands of the UK market and Groupco believes there is no comparable window hardware available. ‘We’ve built a strong partnership with PN and are very impressed with the quality and performance of the company’s product range. The upgrades for the Side Swing option means it meets all safety and security requirements and can be specified with confidence for a variety of demanding applications, from schools and hospitals to high rise residential and commercial buildings,’ comments Richard Duncan, Managing Director of Groupco.

Latest Rapid Processing Centre Raises the Volume

Exclusive to Promac, the latest incarnation of the Rapid Optima VIA MFC 6500 is capable of processing high volumes while retaining production flexibility, via short cycle times and profile independency.

By separating the sawing unit and processing module, productivity is increased considerably and this is further aided by the inclusion ofa buffer station between the two modules. This modular construction is traditionally the key feature ofthe Optima processing centre and allows the unit to be adapted with feeding assemblies, flexible transport axles, buffer runs and cross belts to accommodate production space requirements.

The MFC 6500 M-module provides selective machining operations including drainage, espag routing, night vents, door lock preparation and transom milling. The multi-axis rail head can be indivIdually fitted with assemblies and tools ensuring a wide variety of processing options. Support plates, which can be positioned independently, permit parallel processes. To further increase speed of processing on the new MFC 6500, the Y-axis travel has been increased to 220mm which enables letter plate and night vent cut out operations to be achieved in one pass.

Three 500mm diameter saw blades on the MFC 6500 enable the cutting unit to perform 90 and 45 degree V-notching with an extra two 300mm diameter blades providing peak and bevel cutting. Servo axles provide feed and advance motions on the sawing unit increasing cutting speed and quality. The machine also benefits from a new suite of software.

A New Angle on Cill Jointing

Handling large, ungainly welded cills for conservatories and bays can be fraught with problems. Welded cills are impossible to adjust if measurements are out of tolerance and securing large flexible cills during transit presents a further potential headache. Now, Midland’s based extrusion specialist, Euroseal, has developed a range of connectors which allow its 70mm cill to be quickly and effectively joined on site, leaving a neat, professional finish.

The new connectors are designed to be self-locating within the cill chambers, leaving just a chamfered, colour matched trim on view. The three designs of cill connector allow cills to be straight-jointed, joined at 90¼ and 135¼ and are available in light brown, dark brown and white. These colours are designed to complement the Euroseal 70mm cill, which is available in three foiled finishes, mahogany, rosewood and light oak as well as four shades of white. The new connectors and all finishes of 70mm cill are now available, ex-stock from Euroseal.

'Easy Does It' with BHD

The Easy Frame range from manufacturer of modular conservatories, the BHD Group, is specifically designed to provide home improvement companies with a faster and easier alternative to the traditionally complex process of buying in roof systems and then making and bolting together windows to provide customers with conservatories.

‘Speed and ease of installation is where 'easyframe' really scores. The connector system allows conservatories to be constructed onto a pre-prepared base in just one day. This means less disruption for the homeowner, but also has a significant impact on an installer's productivity. Installing an 'easyframe' conservatory is significantly faster, which means installers can fit more, so in turn sell more and ultimately be more profitable.’ says the company.

Home improvement companies can choose from the concise 'easyframe' range of 18 conservatories featuring three of the best selling styles: Victorian, Edwardian and Lean-to in the three most popular sizes. The range includes the option to choose glass to ground or glass to 600mm dwarf wall panels. This range of 18 products covers an estimated 95% of the market requirement.

'Faced with increasing employment costs and skill shortages, many forward thinking home improvement companies are choosing to focus their attention on selling and installing conservatories, rather than bringing together a hybrid product. This is even more important as consumers increasingly demand independent product accreditation for peace of mind - something that 'easyframe' customers can offer with the 10-year manufacturer's guarantee.' says the company.

'Market research confirms continued strong growth in the conservatory market, particularly at the lowest price spectrum where in 2004 some 65,000 conservatories will be sold. By choosing 'easyframe', home improvement companies can offer consumers an integrated solution. Able to source the complete product from one supplier, the world of conservatories will open up to allow more consumers than ever before to enjoy the benefits of owning a conservatory.

'Home improvement companies that choose the 'easy-frame' solution benefit directly from a reduction in manufacturing labour costs, but also reap the rewards of being able to offer customers a concise range of conservatories that represents value for money.'

Liability Fears Eased with New Winlock Restrictor

New Regulations written into BS 8213 are now stipulating that in certain circumstances, such as hospitals, restrictors must be fitted to windows. With recent court cases ruling that architects, owners of public buildings and even installers can be liable for people falling out of windows, the warnings for the industry are stark.

The spotlight on safety and quality issues in the window industry has never been as intense. Against this backdrop Winlock Security has launched a new initial opening restrictor, called the BoaRestrictor.

Designed to exceed the updated BS8213, BS6375 and BS7412 safety standards, the BoaRestrictor offers a new design. BoaRestrictor restricts initial opening to 100mm requiring two-handed operation to avoid accidental disengaging and automatically re-engages when the sash closes.

BoaRestrictor has been rigorously tested to 600NM of performance loading. Safety and ease of fitment are two of the key design elements of this new British-made restrictor, which reduces dangers from unprotected windows.

Further safety features include the fact that the restrictor is supplied as non-key locking and features green button enhancement for fire egress.

Fabricators should welcome the BoaRestrictor’s ability to fit in line with friction stays and save costs by incorporating run-up blocks. The BoaRestrictor is easy and quick to fit, fully concealed and can be retro-fitted. Convenient 13mm and 17mm stack heights are provided to suit fabricators’ systems.

A Fine Line in Pens

In response to customer demand, the Briwax Professional range has been expanded to include Fine Line pens for minor repairs on wood grain foils.

'These new pens perfectly complement the existing range of lacquer pens,' explained Product Manager, Stuart Jack. 'The lacquer pens were designed for finishing foiled corners during production but we realised that they are also being widely used by installers for minor on-site repairs. In fact, the lacquer pen tip is too big for delicate repair work but as the name suggests, Fine Line pens have a much smaller nib which makes it easier to simulate the graining.'

About the same size as an ordinary biro, Fine Line pens are less bulky and very easy to carry around in a pocket. They are available in mahogany base, mahogany grain and oak/cherry.

In addition to pens, the Briwax Professional range includes a comprehensive selection of products. It is both effective and easy to use and includes special items for PVCu - offering 10 different shades of white - and is also suitable for repairs to solid wood.

Training
Seminars are available throughout the year with each session providing a broad introduction to repairs on all types of surfaces including PVCu, solid wood, veneers, painted finishes and foils. They are an excellent foundation for anyone new to the Briwax Professional system.

Located at the company's new Tamworth training centre, there are two types of seminar - PVCu and Furniture. Both courses run from 09.00 to 16.30hrs and cost £lOO for the first person and £75 for each additional attendee. A light lunch is included.
