D R Services shows New Way to Anchor Glass Balustrades

Statutory requirements to protect the public against being injured by the movement of a sliding door can now be met through the use of a new low-profile balustrade anchor system available from D R Services.

The new system, a cut-to-length aluminium shoe and dry fix gasket kit, is intended to be used to install 12, 19 or 25 mm thick toughened/laminated glass without the use of any additional bracing.

Julie Jarvis, Director of D R Services, recounts: ‘Since the Disability Discrimination Act came into force, a lot of main entrance doors have been converted to sliding operation. Such installations obviously facilitate ease of access or egress to the less able bodied members of society, but also introduce their own hazard.

‘As part of their duty of care to building users, anywhere there is a sliding door, designers must now provide protection along part of the travel to prevent injury to someone falling in its path. Our new aluminium base shoe allows this requirement to be met in the most unobtrusive manner possible.’

The 100 mm high aluminium extrusion is held in place with mechanical anchor bolts at preset intervals along its length. The 1100 mm high glass balustrade is then retained using the dry wedge system supplied by D R Services as part of the pack. The glass can also be demounted through the use of a special tool provided to remove the gaskets.

D R Services can supply the new balustrade shoe with cloaking in virtually any metal finish including gold, chrome plated, anodised aluminium or brushed stainless steel. Matching end caps are also available.

Shower in Style with Bohle

An all-glass shower enclosure lends an air of space and elegance to any bathroom, but finding smart and functional fittings to complete the look can be a problem. Now Bohle has developed ‘Europe’ – its first own manufactured range of shower door hinges, developed exclusively for glass shower doors.

Europe shower door hinges have been designed for easy one-sided wall mounting, or for attaching glass-to-glass as required. They are suitable for use with glass shower doors up to 100cm wide, with glass thicknesses of up to 10mm.

There’s a choice of three different finishes to complement any bathroom décor, from a shiny chrome or matt chrome plated to stainless steel look. And to complete the co-ordinated effect, clamps and corner connectors are all available in the same finishes, together with matching coloured caps to cover screws neatly and securely.

In addition to a stylish design, Europe shower door hinges utilise the latest technology to reduce water leakage. The narrow gap in the swinging axle of the door means less water can escape during a shower, so your bathroom floor stays dry.

Bohle’s new Europe shower door hinges also address a familiar and annoying problem. After being in use for a while, a shower door will settle, which adversely affects the zero positioning set during installation. Many conventional shower door hinges do not allow for any adjustment, but Europe hinges can be adjusted individually by + / - 5o and can be easily re-set at any time, even after prolonged use.

Gary Dean, Managing Director of Bohle UK, comments, ‘Bohle has been a supplier of shower door hinges for many years and now we’ve applied that experience to producing our own brand range. With a patent pending for our solution to re-setting the zero position, Europe shower door hinges really do represent state-of-the-art style and functionality.’

Thermoseal Machinery Enhancements

Two of Thermoseal's most popular machines, the Automatic Sealer and the Profile Bender, have had enhancements made to them and will be available soon from the company.

Enhancements made on the Automatic Sealing Machine have included the addition of a vertical height measuring device installed at the beginning of the feeding rack. The device has improved the cycle and performance time of the entire sealing process.

Previously the glass would travel along the station and then 3 separate measurements were taken at various stages of the 'journey' of the glass. The cavity, length and height of the glass were all taken.

With the addition of a new vertical height measuring device, all 3 measurements are taken at the starting point on the feeding rack before the unit encounters the sealing head.

Therefore the process of applying the sealant to the unit is done much quicker and results in increased productivity and output from the machine.

Also available soon from Thermoseal is Rjukan's latest addition to its range of profile bending machines, the Masterbend MB750.

The machines will be an upgrade from the popular MB400 range which have been extensively sold all around the world. The MB750 range will have many enhancements from the MB400 series including:

o Automatic finger to cater for profile height variation
o Precise bend head lubrication system
o One motor type throughout the Masterbend for ease of maintenance
o AC servo motors providing a 3 times longer life
o A new separated drive and encoder tool plates for greater accuracy
o Centralised printing on all profile widths
o Remote online support

The range of benders is also complemented with a new desiccant filler that incorporates the hole punch and desiccant filling function in one operation. Previously the hole was punched on the bender.

Hubtex 4 Way Stillage Handler

Glassex was the launch pad for the newest product to the Hubtex range, the Hubtex 4 Way Pedestrian truck, which is specifically targeted at the smaller fabricator and installer.

The company says that it is the most cost effective solution to handling long loads in confined areas inside. ‘Where there are areas accessed by the other employees, this offers the safest method possible of storing and retrieving products, as the driver can see fully in front of him at all times.’

Since the recent demise of a large PVCu profile manufacturer in the UK, customers switching to other suppliers have realised that unless their stillages are delivered on a truck with a lorry mounted fork truck, they have great difficulty taking the stillages inside if they do not have their own truck. 10 stillages a week typically gives enough profile for about 500 windows.

‘For such low usage of a truck, a lot of fabricators will not be able to justify the cost of a 4 way truck/counterbalance truck to do this job, but the Hubtex EPGL is a fraction of the cost of even a counterbalance truck depending on spec or can be hired per week for less than a third of a mans wages a week!

‘In summary, the Hubtex EPGL is big news for many Fabricators and Installers and has the potential to help a lot of companies operate better.’

Hubtex 2123 Indoor/Outdoor Electric Truck

The handling of long loads inside and out has become easier now with the introduction of the Hubtex 2123 multidirectional electric sideloader.

Traditionally, indoor trucks with small solid tyres struggled on outdoor floors and the vibration created could affect the controls on the truck, increasing downtime.

The 2123 has rubber tyres and can therefore cope with outdoor conditions. Compared to taking an engined truck indoors, it also has many other benefits, the main ones being zero emissions, much lower running costs, lower bed height (useful in cantilever racking), narrower dimensions and much better manoeuvrability.

A detailed cost analysis shows that the operational costs of the truck over 5 years are considerably less than an engined truck. More information on the 2123 can be obtained from Jim Hammond on 07739 774999.

Escape with Modplan

Veka fabricator, Modplan Ltd has recently introduced a new window egress handle. The in-line handle has a long lever for greater grip and ease of operation, together with a glow in the dark strip, and green push to release button, for ease of visibility and added safety in cases of emergency.

‘If our customers are to sustain margins and develop growth in today's market, they need all the help we can provide to add value’ comments sales manager Chris Reeks. ‘It's easy to get wrapped up in the big issues, when sometimes the little things can make all the difference.'

The big issues for Modplan, as for all other fabricators, include attaining fast, cost effective production that achieves consistent quality. ‘Obviously that's a priority’, continues Chris, ‘but more often than not that leads to a reduction in product choice and availability - we think they should go hand in hand.’

Working closely with customers and suppliers, the team at Modplan constantly aims to improve on its reputation for quality products and service, while offering a comprehensive range of accessories that will not simply satisfy, but impress the consumer.

‘We offer customers the benefits of Network Veka and the Sold Secure Scheme, which have proved extremely popular with both installers and consumers’ adds Chris. ‘Householders require security - not only from their products, but their suppliers!’

Modplan has spent a lot of time ensuring that its finished products will appeal to the end user from every aspect. ‘Even down to ensuring that our door and window furniture can provide a perfect colour match across the range! It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it can make a lot of difference to the ultimate appearance.’

‘Our customer base is increasingly diverse, but they all appreciate the rewards that come from our partnership approach. Like many of our customers, Modplan's reputation is built just as much on customer care, as it is on quality product.’
