Safe and Easy Removal of Unwanted Sealants

Ritec’s Silicone Eater SE-550 is an effective liquid solution that removes cured and uncured sealant quickly and easily from glass or any other surface where it is not wanted.

Silicone sealants bond firmly to common building materials and have high chemical resistance which can be difficult to remove. In the factory, sealants may contaminate glass, framework, equipment, conveyors, tools, workbenches and floors. During installation, sealants can be accidentally spread onto glass, framework or other surroundings. And after installation, some sealants ‘bleed’ onto glass and framework, causing unsightly marks and staining. Silicone Eater provides a fast and efficient answer to these problems.

While the first reaction to these unwanted sealants may be scraping with metal blades, this can damage the surface and still not remove the sealant. The use of some solvents can be hazardous to the user and the environment. These solvents can be classified as flammable, highly flammable, toxic or carcinogenic, and most of them require a slow and therefore time-consuming procedure.

Ritec’s Silicone Eater SE-550 is a liquid solution that digests the silicone and breaks the bond between the sealant and the surface. The speed of removal will largely depend on the thickness of the silicone or butyl seal left on the surface.

‘Silicone Eater SE-550 reduces costs, and the risk of damage is minimised. It ensures the adhesion of self-adhesive lead strips applied to the glass by leaving a 100% silicone-free surface, and is user- and environmentally-friendly.’ says the company. ‘It is good value for money, too, as SE-550’s low volatility reduces loss by evaporation, and the fact that it acts on many types of silicone and butyl sealants, and on silicone water-proofing agents (penetrants), means that several different products do not have to be stocked.

‘It is not toxic or corrosive to metals, is non-carcinogenic and does not use halogenated solvents. SE-550 has also been especially formulated to avoid harmful and uncomfortable odours.’

Andersen’s Art Glass Collection

Andersen Windows has introduced the Art Glass Collection to the UK, a range of eleven original stained glass designs, offering specifiers and builders greater creative flexibility with windows and patio doors.

Architectural, historical and regional styles are the inspiration behind the original designs.

In the forefront of the Andersen Art Glass® Collection is the Frank Lloyd Wright® Series. Four inspirational designs to complement Andersen® windows and patio doors include: ‘Colonnade™’, ‘Prairie Rhythm™’, ‘Wichita™’, and ‘Eucalyptus™’, which draw heavily on the three principles that governed all his work: ‘simplicity’, ‘unity’ and ‘nature’. Each of the four designs is available in clear or coloured options.

Designs from the artist Michael Pilla include: the Artisan Series™ and the Contemporary Series. The Artisan Series™ comprises ‘Harmonics™’ and ‘Affinity™’ which owe much to 20th century European influences. The Classics Series features ‘Regency™’, a design with a neo-classical motif, ‘Diamond Lights™’, a Tudor style, and ‘Lotus™’, which has an Art Deco feel. ‘Taos™’ and ‘Victoria™’ reflect the American origins of Andersen Windows.

Andersen Art Glass panels are available in over 100 different shapes and sizes, using 15 basic colours. A choice of glass options includes authentic mouth blown glass and new ‘antique’ glass, a contemporary glass with surface striations to give it an old-world appearance. A semi opaque option is also available for extra privacy.

Art glass panels are constructed using the traditional methods of stained glass artisans and assembled by hand. Each piece of glass is precision cut using water-jet cutting technology to ensure a perfect fit.

A zinc alloy came - the metal channel between the glass - provides added strength and rigidity. Glass pieces are sealed into the cames with silicone, offering resilience and long lasting adhesion. A bronze or gold patina finish darkens the metal cames giving them a distinctive and naturally aged appearance.

The panels fasten to the inside of Andersen units, giving a built-in appearance. A specially designed fastening system provides easy mounting of art glass panels into new or existing Andersen units.

In some applications, the art glass panel can be trimmed with wood to enhance its stability and provide a finished look that can be painted or stained to match existing woodwork.

Andersen Windows offers the following features as standard: energy efficient, soft coat Low E, argon gas filled double glazing, with a U value down to 1.4. All Andersen windows combine durable, low maintenance, weather resistant Perma-Shield® exteriors with knot-free interiors in clear, unfinished pine.

Andersen windows and art glass panels are available in the UK and Ireland through a network of local independent dealers.

Get Round to it!

The potential to build conservatory roofs 'out ofline' is being explored with the development of a new prototype roofing system.

Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems, the UK PVC/aluminium roof system manufacturer, has developed a dome option to complement its Linear core system.

Initial tests indicate the new version can create domed roofs up to 4m diameter, with arc radius depending on the chosen glazing material. Aztec will supply bar length already bent to shape, for glazing to be installed (16mm multi-wall polycarbonate can be cold bent on site, up to 2.7m bend radius on sheet 1700mm wide).

Colin Bennett, Aztec managing director, elaborates, 'Conservatories, particularly domestic or small commercial, in the UK are inevitably linear in structure. We see domes, but they are mainly architectural features in commercial environments.

'Physically there is no reason why we have to build linear conservatories; the commercial building market is increasingly using domes to make an architectural or aesthetic statement with a building. Why not give the smaller commercial and leisure, and domestic, projects the choice to be different?

'Fabricators can charge a premium for something that we believe will be no harder to install than our standard system, which itself is already acknowledged as being perhaps the easiest and quickest in the market to fabricate and build.'

Aztec claims the new dome will meet the same performance criteria ofits core range. The company says that standard system is designed in such a way to cut fabrication and build time by up to 30% on a standard roof, enabling a pro-rata increase in production capability and profit.

'The Aztec roof uses only 10 core components, and has evolved based on sound engineering principles, to create roof systems which offer greater spanning capability and greater flexibility in design and glazing options than competitive premium quality conservatory roofs, yet with fewer components. Unlike competitive systems, its unique ridge can accommodate all common formats of glazing - 16mm, 25, and 35mm.' adds Colin.

'lndependent tests showed the Aztec system will withstand the worst weather experienced in the UK, with wind loadings of up to 2000 pascals. Its design also means it is proven to be more weather resistant than alternative systems, with minimal risk of rain penetration.'

New Reverse Action in line Espagnolette System

With the dedication to supporting the new build and public sector refurbishment programmes, Maco says it has put considerable effort into producing the R.A.I.L window Espagnolette locking system, a cost-effective (suitable for affordable housing projects) product that gives the potential for all windows to comply with the BS7950 security standard.

R.A.I.L is a fast fix system, which is installed into the window as per a standard Espagnolette. The symmetrical design ensures a fast and simple fabrication process through single plane fitting which removes the necessity to rotate the sash during fabrication. A reduced number of Mushroom Striker Plates are required compared with conventional BS7950 locking systems and Shootbolt Striker Plates are no longer required.

Security is gained by the provision of up to three pairs of Mushroom Locking Bolts operating simultaneously. On closing the window, the Mushroom Bolts enter either side of a standard Maco Mushroom Striker Plate ensuring that the locking points remain fully engaged during attack.

The design of the new R.A.I.L is fully compatible with all Eurogrooved window systems and with Maco having a wide range of Striker Plates on offer means that the product is available to nearly all PVCu, timber and aluminium window fabricators.

The development of the R.A.I.L locking system first appeared on the now tried and tested Maco Mach II Shootbolt Espagnolette.

RoofWright Launches Comprehensive New Pricing Software

All too often, forgetting to add in the cost of a door or moving a ton of earth from the site has meant quoting the wrong price for the job and reducing your margin.
To help combat this kind of error, RoofWright has recently launched RoofWright Silver 5.8 with a comprehensive checklist covering everything from preparation of the site to every last component of the conservatory.

RoofWright Silver calculates the total and individual costs of all the component parts of the conservatory you’ve designed: base-work, flooring and all the extra ancillary items that are easy to forget. The cost of windows can be calculated by either matrix or individual style. The default checklist provides a series of questions and answers that can be used both as a sales prompt and as a price calculator. The checklist can be amended and changed to include all the ancillary items available to a customer and acts as a double check and memory jogger to make sure that all elements of the job are taken into consideration when quoting a price.

RoofWright Silver also provides an animated build of the conservatory allowing the salesman the means to make the most of every single feature of the conservatory he is selling.

Bays Just Got Easier

New Structural Bay Jacking System from CWG provides greater strength, makes installation faster and simpler plus importantly, it satisfies Building Regulations.

CWG has developed a new, versatile, strong, pole or post and jacking support system for bays of all shapes.

Fast and easy to install, the system meets the requirements of Part A of the Building Regulations. Included are corrosion protected, high tensile steel poles or posts for optimum integrity and strength. Each has a spreader plate at the top and bottom so loads are distributed over a wider area. A threaded jack at the cill means that with the use of a simple tommy bar, adjustment can be easily made ensuring there is adequate contact between the lintel and cill to provide strength and support.

Square bays and angles can all be accommodated with the CWG system, which also includes matching couplers that allow for adjustment and tolerances plus a tubular or square PVCu cover profile for the steel support section.

Whether bays contain standard frames fabricated using either Rehau 60mm Tritec or 70mm S706 profiles, the Shield 70mm system or CWG’s heritage style Vertical Sliding windows, the new support system is suitable for the vast majority of installations. However, practically every one is different so CWG’s customer support department is only a phone call away for structural calculations and other requirements.

No Trouble at the Top with Wagner

Door and window hardware specialist Wagner (GB) Ltd is now offering over-frame ventilation for newbuild or replacement in the form of Ducotop 35.

Supplied made-to-measure with cord or rod control, the vent provides 15,000mm2/m, although the capacity can be independently restricted, where required, by splitting the opening flap.

It is a requirement in some situations for a ventilator to be permanently open, where a gas or domestic fuel-burning appliance is present for example. This can be easily achieved at the cutting and assembling stage, prior to despatch of the vent from Wagner.

Over ventilation due to wind gusting does not present a problem due to the presence of a self-regulating flap.

The integrity of the frame is not compromised, as no routing of the profile is required. Instead, the ventilator is quickly fixed to the top of the frame, through pre-drilled holes, prior to the window or door being installed, saving valuable fabrication time.

As the vent body is only 35mm high, the product sits discreetly between the top of the frame and the brickwork or cavity closer.

Ducotop 35 is adjustable to fit profiles from 57-72mm thick.

Another Revolutionary new Gutter System from Synseal

Both Synseal’s Global and Shield conservatory roofs have for the past nine months had the added benefit of the swing fit guttering system. To offer more choice the company has now introduced an alternative guttering system, using traditional gutter brackets that fix directly to the eaves beam and are concealed within the gutter. This new system still has many of the existing swing fit gutter benefits, like the deep non-handed Ogee shape, non-handed outlets, round down pipes, and the facility for a spigot outlet. Both guttering options will work with the same eaves beam component.

‘A number of our customers told us their installers would like the option of the traditional type of gutter fixing system, especially for the more awkward style of installation,’ says Nick Dutton, Sales and Marketing Director of Synseal Extrusions Ltd. ‘This new system offers fantastic flexibility for installers on site.’

Perfect Re-Flextion

Sky-Vent Ltd has recently announced the launch of Re-Flex high performance glass.

Re-Flex utilises micro thin coating on the inside of the two panes which face into the cavity. The coating was developed using Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD). This glass technology is the reaction between a high temperature and a gas that creates the continuous application of uniform layers of metal oxide onto the glass, resulting in the hard pyrolic coating. Sky-Vent claims that Re-Flex offers protection and comfort through all seasons: cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter and quieter in the rain.

Sky Vent says that conservatory installers will not only be impressed with the speed and reliability that their orders are dealt with but also with the added benefits of hassle free deliveries direct to site.

The company claims to be able to save conservatory firms an average of £1000 a month if they switch to our Re-flex smart glass.

'We gave out 2000 CDROM virtual brochures at Glassex and the response has been fantastic.' commented Managing Director Halina Witek.

'Conservatory firms love the subtle blue tint of Re-flex, which keeps out up to 75% of solar heat in summer. But now we are also adding Re-flex clear to the range for installations requiring improved clarity or more light transmittance.' she added.

'With a U value down to 1.1 (on Re-flex+) this smart glass can keep in 50% more heat than other IGU's on the market. The external surface of the glass is treated with a special 'easy clean' coating to reduce cleaning and prevent dirt and mess from sticking to the glass.'

Every unit is manufactured using the latest automated robotic sealing technology and complies to BS5713 with a 20 year warranty against seal failure. Delivered direct to site in 5-7days for a no handling, easy glass package.

Advanced Technology at its Best

GTI Kombimatec’s new 4HD/130-200 vertical four head corner welder provides greater fabrication flexibility than ever before. Easy to use and simple to maintain, as with all Kombimatec welders, the 4HD can be configured to suit operating height as well as the specific profile style being welded.

It is estimated the new welder will increase output of completed welded PVCu frames by up to 30 per cent over conventional four head welding machines.

A colour touch screen display allows weld timers and settings to be adjusted easily while the machine intelligently prompts operators with instructions.

Adjustable loading and off loading positions allow the machine to be used more easily by operators depending on their height. This reduces fatigue, as operators no longer have to stretch to place the profile into the machine.

The new welder is equipped with a light curtain in place of mesh guarding which enables easier access to insert the components of the frame to be welded without compromising operator safety. Should any fault occur during this operation the machine automatically goes into safety mode.

The operator inserts the next profiles before removing the previously completed frame for optimum performance. The machine automatically adjusts to the next frame to be welded to avoid further operator actions and automatically ejects the completed welded frames onto the offloading station.

The machine adapts quickly and easily when changing between different profiles and utilises support blocks with magnets and special setting screws to allow quick removal and refitting. Automatic head movement locates the profile providing consistency.

A spring-free heater plate float removes bias melt to one side, a small miniature cylinder centralises the heater plate when necessary.

The 4HD is ideal for small sashes down to 300mm. It has a fast operating cycle due to high speed Mitsubishi servo controlled motors and special sequencing. It is fully compliant with CE regulations and has optional extras that include an offloading station and a bar code scanner for automatic operation.

New Glazing System Offers Complete Transparency for Architects

SGG Swissflam Structure from Vetrotech Saint-Gobain is a new concept in glazing technology, requiring only the slimmest of connections between each glass sheet for a perfect fire-resistant seal.

It means that SGG Swissflam Structure not only gives maximum transparency and optimum use of light but, with a whole range of decorative treatment options also available, the glazing system is also flexible – with a whole range of potential applications.

A smooth and uninterrupted glass surface is obtained either by linking each sheet of glass with an extremely thin H-profile or siliconed in the traditional butt-joint method – an aesthetically-pleasing solution for internal applications such as partition walls or in shopping centres.

‘SGG Swissflam Structure is a very exciting development because it gives architects new opportunities to incorporate glass into their designs - a totally-safe glazing solution that is also the ultimate in wall-to-wall transparency,’ said Sue Hargreaves, general manager.

SGG Swissflam Structure is produced from sheets of multi-laminated safely glass separated by clear and colourless intumescent interlayers which, in the event of fire, turn opaque and expand to form a fully-insulating heat shield.

The glass barrier operates for at least 30 minutes (EI30) or up to 30 minutes of integrity and 60 minutes of insulation (EI60), depending on the glass layers specified, each in accordance with European Norms to EW and/or EI classification.
The system can be installed into steel or aluminium framing and is compatible with various other treatments – for example, instant privacy (SGG Priva Lite), etched (SGG Satinovo) or patterned glass (SGG Masterglass).

‘SGG Swissflam Structure is the glazing system that architects and specifiers have been asking for. We’re delighted to be launching this exciting new system to the UK market and to begin work with architects and the building industry on what can now be achieved using our new system,’ said Sue Hargreaves.

Close working relationships with architects, specifiers and installers across a broad spectrum, has created a flexibility resulting in both domestic and commercial installations. And now, the Compass Roof Vent has undergone modifications to further enhance the product.

Retaining the core features and benefits such as the built in weather bar, baffle drainage system and sealing, the vent continues to offer efficiency and severe weather rating. But with adaptations to specific parts of the design, the vent now provides a slimmer glazing connector, for ease of glass sizing, a neater joint feature that provides added strength and more aesthetically pleasing sightlines.

Compass has also spent considerable time working on the engineering of the actual extrusions, which will ensure a greater consistency of quality extrusion, for the thermally broken aluminium sections that make the vent lightweight, yet structurally strong.

Offered as a fully fabricated, finished product, supplied within good lead times, the Compass Roof Vent is popular with installers and manufacturers of aluminium, pvc and grp conservatory roofs.

However, the simple, but adaptable product design, has proven particularly popular for use in bespoke timber conservatories. This is due, in part, to the ease with which the product can be clad, enabling the internal finish to be matched precisely. Moreover, what other vent manufacturers may deem to be unconventional sizing (such as a 1600mm x 700mm) is quite normal for Compass Building Products. Offering 16, 24, 25, 28 and 32 mm glazing options, without any beading requirement, means that this design offers additional security and is simple to fit, even into an existing conservatory. In fact, with polycarbonate roofs, there is no need to purchase a new panel, as the vent can be fitted using the existing polycarbonate.

Every Compass Roof Vent comes supplied with a screwjack, available in chrome, or with a polished brass finish. But an alternative is now being introduced. The folding opener offers simple operation providing a neat alternative, with total security.

A comprehensive range of advanced automatic, and remote controls are also available, suitable for larger or commercial applications where zoning is required. Visitors to Interbuild 2004 can obtain a greater understanding of the possibilities that can be achieved through the use of these advanced control systems by visiting Dyer Environmental Controls, exhibiting on Stand D41 Hall 06, where an example of the Compass Roof Vent will also be on show.

‘Combining intelligent design with quality materials, the Compass Roof Vent addresses the demand for a simpler, easier to fit and more aesthetically pleasing ventilation solution for new, or existing conservatories.’ says the company.
