Duraflex Opens New Doors

Duraflex has added a high performance composite door to complement its popular PVC-U Diamond Suite. The new Stormfront range uses advanced manufacturing techniques to deliver proven performance backed by independent tests. The fitter-friendly collection is available in a choice of classic styles and colours, together with a range of specially designed hardware.

Thermoplastic faces are bonded to an exclusive core construction under high pressure, creating a door that is strong, extremely stable and has a long-lasting finish. They will not warp, swell or shrink like timber and never need re-painting. In addition to these benefits, the door's core has a 30-minute fire rating.

Stormfront doors are designed to be as easy to fit as panelled PVC-U doors. And the combination of a high performance seal and fade-free finish minimises call backs and maximises profit.

The seven standard styles in the Duraflex Stormfront range are available ex-stock and include all the popular entrance door designs, such as Georgian Solid or Glazed and Victorian Half Glazed. Doors can be supplied in brilliant white, red, blue, green, mahogany or light oak. The chosen style can be complemented by a selection of glazing options and either white, polished gold or silver finish hardware (other finishes available to order). The high quality locking system utilises a double hook lock with opposing action and deadbolt lock (PAS 23/34 approved, BBA test report number 2581). The door set includes dual seal technology that practically eliminates drafts and water ingress.

‘Highly durable and offering enhanced security, composite doors have become the preferred choice for many public sector specifiers,’ says Ian Cowan, Sales Director of Duraflex. ‘And, of course, these benefits are equally appealing to the domestic market, so our new Stormfront range provides fabricators and installers with the ideal opportunity to 'sell up' in this sector.’

The Door of Opportunity

Trade fabricator, Griffin Windows, has recently upgraded its residential doors to offer installers and consumers even more choice and greater benefits.

The Griffin entrance doors are now available with two sash options for improved aesthetic appeal. The bevelled or feature option is now available on both sides of the sash giving more coverage to the door whilst reducing the risk of draughts. Furthermore a visually enhanced door is achieved.

A further significant upgrade includes the introduction of the New Pioneer Stainless Steel doorlock to the door. The Pioneer doorlock offers improved strength and corrosion resistance due to the high grade stainless steel face plate used. The two adjustable rolling cams are also corrosion resistent and give a tight weather sealing on the locking side of the door. The rolling feature allows for light operation on the door handle due to less friction build up. The doorlock offers a one piece keep for accurate alignment with the option to reset directly on site.

A unique feature of the Pioneer doorlock is the sash lifter option. This innovative feature maintains the correct sash to frame alignment giving trouble free operation for the consumer. This in itself is very good news for the time-pressed installer as it can significantly reduce the number of consuming call outs.

The Pioneer doorlock has been tested to 100,000 full locking and unlocking cycles along with 240 hours salt spray testing achieved.

Commenting on the new door options, Griffin Windows Managing Director, Mike Dunlevy said: ‘Door sales still present a huge opportunity for installers and at Griffin we are offering even more choice to help them secure the sale. Aside from the low maintenance of PVC-U doors the biggest advantage to sell to the homeowner is the aesthetic improvement the residential door can bring. By offering a choice of sash styles, improved doorlock mechanism and secured by design status, installers can offer an excellent product which is sure to satisfy the most discerning of buyers.’

Ultraframe’s Chambered Capping comes out Tops!

Ultraframe’s chambered top cappings have proved a big hit with installers of the company’s Classic conservatory roofing system. The PVC chambered top cappings offer ease of installation for installers whilst significantly improving the thermal performance of the roof and comfort levels for the homeowner.

Available in a choice of two new designs, dome and bevel; the chambered top cappings are sculpted for a pleasing appearance in either a rounded or a more geometric profile. Their PVC multi-chambered extrusions trap air in expertly designed air pockets to enhance thermal efficiency. This design prevents heat loss through leakage points, virtually eliminates cold bridging and condensation and lowers the overall ‘U’ value. The cappings demonstrate an 18% improvement over standard cappings and are 40% more thermally efficient than competitor systems.

Home County Conservatories Ltd, based in Chelmsford, has been particularly impressed with Ultraframe’s new chambered top cappings. Steve Mileham, Managing Director, at Home County explained: 'Chambered top cappings have been a great addition to Ultraframe’s Classic roofs. They are much easier to install than the traditional cappings and like all Ultraframe products, are finished to a high standard so they are aesthetically pleasing to homeowners. In terms of raising the level of thermal performance, no other competitor product can compete.'

As well as making the roof more thermally efficient, the new chambered top cappings virtually eliminate warping and twisting, especially where foils are used, to increase the overall performance of the roof, practically eliminating costly call backs for installers.

Linda Doughty, Marketing Director at Ultraframe, commented: 'The hugely positive feedback from our customers to additions such as the chambered top cappings is a result of Ultraframe’s continued investment in our Classic range, an established favourite with installers and fabricators alike. At Ultraframe we continually strive to advance our products, improving their quality, aesthetics and technical performance. We pride ourselves on offering our customers industry leading product technology that is also as fitter friendly as possible. In this way we aim to prepare Ultraframe customers for any potential changes to Building Regulations and provide them with an excellent advantage over competitors.'

Avocet Takes Hardware Quality and Style to New Heights with Pioneer

Window and door hardware manufacturer Avocet says that it has redefined the accepted parameters for product style, quality and performance, in a new range appropriately branded Pioneer.

Avocet, one of the UK's longest established and most prolific suppliers of window and door hardware, decided that the best way to stimulate sales was to take a fresh look at all of the key aspects of the most popular hardware products, whilst continuing to offer competitive pricing. Thus, after one of the most extensive development programmes in the company's history the Pioneer range has been launched to include, from the outset, brand new door locks, hinges, handles, cylinders and letter plates.

All products have been developed to the same core criteria to include convenient low maintenance; superior standards of security; sleek, elegant good looks; stylish designs; a wide choice of colours; and a perfect finish.

The new stainless steel Door Lock and One Piece Keep epitomise the qualities of the Pioneer range. Conforming fully to PAS 23/24 security standards, the Door Lock has a unique mechanism that maintains correct sash-to-frame alignment for optimum reliability in performance. The design incorporates a number of new features, including the locking mechanism and a new latch, which can be reversed when the lock is fitted. Two opposing hooks and centre deadbolt with anti-saw pins enhance the product's security, together with a 16mm deadbolt throw. The Pioneer Door Lock can be fitted with shootbolts at both top and bottom for increased flexibility and security.

The newly redesigned stainless steel One Piece Keep is manufactured to ensure accurate alignment with the deadbolt, offering significantly faster assembly. Manufactured from the same 430 Grade stainless steel as the Door Lock, it is suitable for all axis profiles and uses a locking packer system compatible with the majority of UK profile systems. Reflecting Avocet's policy of presenting products with high visual appeal, the hook apertures on the One Piece Keep are reinforced internally to provide a better looking appearance, enabling greater clearance between the sash and the frame. Back boxes are also supplied for the hooks and latches.

Stephanie Wright, Avocet's Category Manager for the Pioneer Range, says that the rulebook was torn up: ‘The market has never been more competitive and we understand that, once a customer has been gained, they must be retained. The most successful way of doing both is to offer products and service that are, quite simply, the best available in the market place.

‘In developing Pioneer we put all of our international design, prototyping and manufacturing experience to the test, with one objective: to produce the best range of hardware available in the market today. These products have undergone the most rigorous testing of any Avocet has produced, and have come through with flying colours. We have also tested them against other products in the market place, and comfortably outperformed them.’

The Pioneer range enjoys the backing of Avocet's customer assurance scheme Avocet Assist, thus providing a level of customer support commensurate with the standards defined for the new products.

NWL: The Leader in Lead

The recent development by North Western Lead of a self-adhesive lead reel that at 100 metres was twice the usual length than standard reels, came about because a major US machinery manufacturer (GED Integrated Solutions) wanted to build an automatic lead applicator for volume production of leaded glass units.

With a special polyester backing able to tolerate high-speed application without tearing apart, the company says that these extra-long reels were not only a world-first, but also one of only a very few innovations ever made in self-adhesive lead technology.

After all, once the idea of self-adhesive lead came about, and thus helping to revolutionise the entire decorative glass industry, there was not much more that could be done with it.

That is, until someone noticed the difference between bright new lead strip and the original lead in traditional lights made in the days before double glazing, and which had weathered nicely over many years.

Antique Lead thus became the first of NWL's Decra Led branded Coated Leads that now numbers Brass, Gold and Platinum as the biggest sellers, and which also includes Pewter, and White; all available in Oval profile in a variety of widths. Flat profile and Ribbed versions are available in Natural Lead and White Lead respectively.

In an otherwise fairly static market, Coated Lead sales are increasing. This is not only due to its popularity with householders, who are continually striving to individualise their homes, and the simultaneous development of convincingly foiled woodgrain doors, windows and conservatories in which, for example, Antique Lead has massive visual appeal, but also the growth of the fitted kitchens and bedrooms market.

Whereas die-hard traditionalists might baulk at the idea of coloured leads in their windows, this is certainly not the case where internal use in glazed cabinets is concerned. Whichever coated finish best matches the kitchen or bedroom units, that's the one that customers choose.

The result is a growing sector within an otherwise uninspiring market.

Sales of Coated Leads to export markets are ‘particularly exciting’ says NWL MD Stephen Hart, ‘and these will feature strongly on our stand at the upcoming China Glass 2006 exhibition in Beijing.’

Safe Escape Hinges on Cotswold Windows - Safety Fitted as Standard

Polyframetrade Ltd and Cotswold Architectural Products have pooled their industry experience and ideas to develop an emergency escape hinge - the Cotswold Egress Easy Clean Hinge - designed to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce production costs.

Halifax based Polyframetrade, which manufactures quality UPVC doors, windows, patios and conservatories, has worked with Cotswold Architectural Products for many years. Both companies share the same customer focused goals of quality product supply and efficient delivery.

Initial discussions between Mario Early, director of Polyframetrade and Iain Morgan, Cotswold Architectural Products' director, revealed that the build process for windows with egress access was inefficient. Rather than change the production method, they took a broader view of the issue and developed a way of simplifying the whole manufacturing process with the introduction of a reversible hinge. The collaboration was focused on improving and streamlining Polyframetrade's manufacturing operation and to increase product sales. Polyframetrade also wanted to address the demand for windows that provide emergency fire escape access - a legal condition which affects all properties built since 2001 - whilst maintaining BS7950 and BS7412 certification.

‘Historically, window manufacturers have fitted hinges to the frame first, estimated the position of the sash and then made readjustments later - or, it may have been left to the installer to perform any alteration whilst the windows were being fitted.
‘Also, customers needed to ask for 90 degree opening hinges for emergency exit applications - a detail often overlooked when ordering,’ said Paul Reid, sales director, Polyframetrade.

Bespoke Manufacturing
During the modified manufacturing process, the hinge is first fitted to the correct position on the sash by means of a sash end cap. This negates the need for any later readjustments and also reduces any associated downtime. The sash is then fitted to the frame using a frame end cap which ensures its exact positioning during construction. This process eliminates the delays that were experienced using the previous method of operation.

‘Our trade customers demand high quality, on time delivery and value for money. Adopting this hinge has impacted positively on our manufacturing capabilities and speed of manufacture which has led to increased levels of customer service,’ Paul Reid continued.

‘The introduction of the universal hinge simplifies the specification procedure and purchasing process, and minimises errors attributed to incorrect customer ordering. As a result of this innovation, the Cotswold hinge is now fitted to all side hung windows supplied by Polyframetrade as standard.’

No Special Orders or Time Delays
The hinge benefits Polyframetrade's customers in several ways. They receive a product that is compliant with building regulations as standard, and significantly, at no extra cost. Whilst other trade manufacturers fit a 90 degree hinge as an optional extra, Polyframetrade can now provide an emergency egress capability with every side hung window.

Simplified Manufacturing
In order to keep the fabrication process simple and cost effective and to speed up the production process, Cotswold Architectural Products developed a locator clip positioned on the sash arm. This device ensures the accurate positioning of the hinge and removes the need for expensive fitting jigs to be installed. It also guarantees accuracy and simple assembly.

‘The cost to the industry in retrofitting hinges, making readjustments and manufacturing changes is considerable. By working together on the development of this product, we have created a simple solution that provides a competitive advantage. More importantly, it makes life easier for the customer and keeps costs down,’ said Iain Morgan, director of Cotswold Architectural Products.

Improved Supply & Distribution
To guarantee a consistent supply of hinges, Cotswold Architectural Products ensures that a consignment stock is available at Polyframetrade's factory in advance. At the end of each month, Cotswold Architectural Products is able to invoice Polyframetrade for the number of units used. This is an important element of the supply chain as it guarantees that there are no hold-ups in the fabrication process.

‘Effective stock control is a key requirement of our business. The move to a standard hinge has simplified our stock control system. We are now able to co-ordinate our requirements with Cotswold much more effectively,’ concluded Paul Reid.

Euro-Secure - Protecting Door Lock Cylinders

Designed and tested to meet the proposed door security amendment to PAS 023/024, Laird Security Hardware has developed a cylinder clamp designed to prevent forced entry through the removal of the profile cylinder.

Known as Euro-Secure, the cylinder clamp can be fitted to most Euro-profile cylinders installed in PVC-U and composite doors.

Manufactured from durable extruded aluminium and zinc alloy, the Euro-Secure cylinder clamps are easy to install in the factory or retro-fitted on site.

The clamp is positioned with the aide of a setting block and fastened to the locking cylinder using two grub screws.

The cylinder is re-positioned within the lock and secured in place by fixing bolts drilled through the door and the handle is fitted to the door concealing the clamp.

Laird's Euro-Secure cylinder protection may be installed during initial door manufacture or simply retro-fitted, ensuring that the integrity of the cylinder and the lock of existing doors can be significantly improved.

The clamp has been security tested to meet the requirements of the proposed draft G of PAS23/24.

Laird's Euro-Secure cylinder security clamp is a practical solution to a potential vulnerability in door cylinders and can easily enhance the security of most doors.

New Automatic Glass Door Hinges from Häfele UK

Frameless glass doors have become almost ubiquitous in commercial applications, using double action patch fittings and floor springs set into the floor, allowing light to flow through a building. Glass doors are now becoming increasingly popular in residential settings, for the same reasons.

However the option of a large floor spring cut into the floor is not always an ideal option for many householders, as the flooring may already be laid or under floor heating is installed. But using the new Häfele Automatic Glass Door Hinges, you can have the convenience of a double action self closing glass door, without touching the floor.

The hinges are manufactured in Italy by Metalglas SRL, to the usual high quality expected from Italian engineering.

A spring fitted inside each hinge, hidden by a coverplate, automatically returns the door to the closed position, whether the door is opened inwards or outwards.

Available in Satin Chrome or Satin Nickel finish, the hinges are always used in pairs allowing door weights up to 65kgs. 8mm, 10mm or 12mm toughened glass can be used, with a maximum door width of 1000mm.

Along with the Automatic Glass Door hinges, Häfele can also offer latches, locks and handles from the Metalglas range.

For the complete solution Häfele has a network of Glass Partners across the UK, experienced glazing companies who can offer the complete package of glass, hardware and even installation if required.

For details of the Automatic Glass door hinges and other glass hardware products, please contact Häfele's Glass Product Manager, Gary King.

Daedalian Launches 'Designer' Range to Stand Alongside Bespoke Offerings

In a development of its offering, decorative glass manufacturer, Daedalian, has launched the 'Designer' range of sand blasted glass designs alongside its award-winning bespoke design and installation service.

Branded as the 'Designer' range, in true Daedalian style the designs are a blend of shapes pitched to appeal to its already-sophisticated market.

Initially the new range is made up of twelve designs - eight symmetric stencil effects and four organic designs - all are treated with the award-winning Clearshield surface protection system. This treatment dramatically reduces the need for cleaning and produces an attractive acid-etch effect.

Many of the designs are the original work of the company's Managing Director and Senior Designer, Davia Walmsley. Working with Wales Wales Rawson architects, her design for the Grassington Interchange building atrium in the Yorkshire Dales National Park took a Highly Commended in the RIBA Northern Division Awards two years ago.

The patterns are blasted onto both sides of the glass, creating interesting three dimensional and multi tonal effects. These can be clear or coloured, and of any thickness of annealed, toughened, laminated safety glass (manufactured to BS 6202) or laminated fire resistant glass. All the stencil designs can be produced in varying proportions to suit their location.

Daedalian is investing substantially in another sandblasting room which is due to come on stream in early 2006. Currently production is confined to existing cabinets, but customer interest is already sufficiently high for the company to feel confident that its return on this investment will be excellent.

The company’s confidence appears well-founded, for although Daedalian has only just launched the new range, negotiations are already underway with several customers interested in commissioning a substantial quantity of output for shower screens and other internal glazing.

‘With this new range, we have developed a series of interesting designs which we feel will be appropriate for many diverse applications.’ says Sales and Marketing Director, Chris Walmsley. ‘The beauty of it is that the range is flexible and continually developing. We anticipate updating the range twice a year according to customer demand.

‘The new blast room will use aluminium oxide as the blast medium, much of which can be recycled over a period of time.

‘Staff training is already well advanced, with two of our staff specialising in sandblasting, whilst others are being trained to a high level of competence.’

Chris Walmsley sees hotels, offices and top of the range housing developers as key potential customers, with Daedalian working with interior designers, architects and specifiers just as it has done for the past 20 years with its bespoke glazing service.

To receive a copy of the 'Designer' range information CD, contact Daedalian on 01253 702531 or visit http://www.daedlain-glass.co.uk.

Compriband Timber Max - A New Top Performing Seal

A high performance sealing tape from illbruck Sealant Systems UK Ltd has been developed to deal with the large-scale differential joint movement associated with timber frame construction systems.

The new Compriband Timber Max pre-compressed foam sealing tape has an extended joint movement capability from 13mm to 50mm - making it suitable for the perimeter sealing of window installations in timber frame structures.

Downward differential movement in timber frame buildings - and particularly in multi-storey developments - can lead to large differences in joint sizes around the perimeter of windows.

When used to seal gaps at the head and sill of window frames, the open-cell foam nature of Compriband Timber Max acts like a spring - exerting a continuous outward pressure on the adjoining building components, whilst yielding to further compression to provide a tough, rubber like joint seal.

CNC Decorative Corner Cleaning has Evolved and is More Affordable Than Ever

The challenge of cleaning internal ovolo, ogee and scotia details is not new but Kombimatec believes it has a unique advantage.

In today's market it is more important than ever to gain that competitive edge and differentiate from the competition. Offering decorative window systems is a great way to do this however until recently the cleaning side has been a deterrent against switching production.

Kombimatec machines, through its design and manufacturing facility in Luton have remained focused on the UK market. This has enabled an in-depth knowledge of UK window systems and an understanding of fabricators requirements. Combined with investment in the latest 3D CAD systems (Computer Aided Design) Kombimatec is able import the profile shape and plot the precise path required for its ovolo tool. This data is then transferred to the kombimatec EV470/300 and EV475 range of cnc cleaners.

Setting the tool path in this way and applying the right tooling Kombimatec boast their cnc corner cleaners do as good a job, if not better, than the rest - for considerably less cost. With installations up and down the country and conversions to decorative window systems every month there are many case studies and references available.

'So don't be put off by higher ticket prices of other machines. Come and see the results yourself at our factory showroom or existing users of Kombimatec machines producing good quality finished decorative window frames.' says the company.

CCG Launches Climacool - The New Name in the Specialist Conservatory Glass Roof Industry

CCG based in Morecambe has launched Climacool a self-cleaning glass for the specialist conservatory glass roof market. If the name is unfamiliar the product is in fact well established having a ten year track record as a specialist conservatory roof glass with a proven performance history.

Climacool is a triple action system which is both self cleaning, thermally controlled and glare reducing. Over the years this specialist conservatory roof product has been tested and modified to ensure that all legislative requirements were met and now with a specially formulated finish provides optimum performance.

‘The CCG team prides itself on providing consistently high standards and by comparison to standard conservatory roof glass or polycarbonate the Climacool glazing system has a special coating that will give excellent solar control with up to 63% heat reflection,’ says the company.

In addition the finish provides a U-value reduced to 1.1 which is a substantial reduction from ordinary glass. This results in thermal retention and reduced heating bills for the end user.

‘Climacool has evolved from CCG's philosophy of providing excellent products from experience gained in the industry. This 'intelligent' system blocks out solar heat in the summer months whilst helping to reduce heat loss when temperatures drop outside.

'CCG has developed four products within the Climacool range and statistically these outperform other specialist conservatory roof glass systems. The range incorporates a number of options, Climacool Super Plus, Climacool Super, Climacool Tint, Climacool and all of these products offer top quality, high performance levels at realistic prices.

‘Furthermore, this advanced system provides excellent self-cleaning properties which combined with the solar performance offers the perfect glass roof solution. Using daylight and rainwater, Climacool breaks down any organic dirt from the external surfaces and it is washed away leaving a shiny finish - even on the most hard to reach corners and joints. CCG was the first to produce and supply this genuine self cleaning glass.’

CCG's Climacool range has a 10 year guarantee and with its slightly blue tint improves the all round look of any conservatory and with up to 53% light transmission the sun's glare is dramatically reduced. This allows for comfortable usage of the conservatory on the brightest of days.

Chris King, Sales Director comments, ‘A standard conservatory roof, in either polycarbonate or clear glass, can create many unavoidable problems, including extreme internal temperatures, heat loss and horrendous noise issues when it rains. CCG technicians have developed Climacool as a state-of-the-art system that will help to combat these and associated problems.’

He continues: ‘Climacool offers additional benefits in that it has a proven track record of over 10 years with many satisfied customers now using the Climacool range and that speaks for itself - ask your current supplier how long they have been manufacturing their roof glass product!’

He concludes: ‘Our technical specification is 100% accurate, trialed and tested, too many companies easily pluck figures out of the air to impress potential customers but very few can either prove or back up these statistics. That's worrying in an area that is still quite new to most people who have very little to compare like for like products.

'Our turnaround is 5 - 7 days from order and all the deliveries are made UK, Nationwide on our own vehicles by our own drivers. No outside contractors are used at all, that is important to us, as we see that by being in total control from manufacture to delivery we are in the very best position to service our customers accordingly!’
