New Sundyal™ Roof Extends Choice for Homeowners

Conservatory roof specialist Wendland Roof Solutions has developed a roof product that aims to bridge the gap between a conservatory and a built extension - Sundyal™.

A new product for the UK market, Sundyal™ is an affordable, solid roof system that aims to combine the thermal insulation properties of a built extension with the light, airy feel of a conservatory. The result is a ‘sun room’ which brings the home and garden together and can be used comfortably all year round. The roof has been designed to complement the exterior style of any UK home - it is externally clad in a selection of tile finishes, including Burnt Umber, Antique Red and Charcoal. Sundyal™ represents an exterior style match for any home.

This sense of style and practicality has also been extended to the internal design of the roof. Sundyal™ can be clad internally with everything from timber tongue and groove boards to PVC cladding in a range of colours and finishes. However, the most popular choice is expected to be a plastered finish that can include downlighters for a modern look that will match the interior of many UK homes. In addition to these aesthetic benefits, Sundyal™ offers practical advantages over a standard conservatory roof system. Because the roof system is solid rather than glass or polycarbonate, it offers homeowners both greater privacy and better thermal efficiency, producing a sun room that is bright yet comfortable. The insulation properties of the roof allow the room to remain cooler than a typical conservatory in hot weather, yet also retain warmth during colder months. A Sundyal™ sun room also represents a far more cost effective alternative to a built extension, with the average house extension now costing homeowners in excess of £20,000. Customers will save money on heating bills as well as initial construction costs.

For installers, Sundyal™ is a good addition to an existing range of conservatory products, representing an added value sales opportunity. The product is easy and quick to fit and can easily be assimilated into an existing conservatory installation set-up.

Wendland’s Managing Director Graham Fisher anticipates wide interest in the product:

‘Sundyal™ really is a revolutionary roof system. It will fill the gap that currently exists in the market between the choice of a conservatory or a house extension and open up even greater opportunities in this market for installers. We have already received incredibly positive and enthusiastic feedback from some of our existing installers who have previewed Sundyal™ and want to include it in their portfolios as soon as possible. It’s a product that we believe will sell itself – it looks fantastic, can be fitted easily and offers excellent thermal performance.’

Aztec Pitches it Low

A new system specifically for low pitched conservatories is being launched by Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems.

Specially designed self-supporting steel glazing bars provide structural integrity, while minimising intrusion into the ‘room’ below with a maximum depth below 35mm glazing of less than 30mm. Purpose-formed structured polycarbonate ‘clip fixes’ and interlocks into the steel bars. The polycarbonate sheet and bridging clip combine to form a weathertight seal and joint locked into the steel support.

The special design of the polycarbonate and its fixing method means that externally, any abutments are almost invisible, creating a clean, unbroken eyeline across the roof. Internally, Aztec has developed a bespoke white PVC trim which simply clips over the steel support to provide a clean, aesthetically pleasing internal finish.

The system is engineered to create a self-supporting structure capable of spanning up to 12m lengths with a pitch as low as 3°. Each component is supplied cut to size as required.

A choice of glazing options from 16mm- 40mm, in clear, opal and bronze, is available, ensuring optimum compliance with Building Regulations, fire resistance and insulation criteria and flexibility to accommodate individual customer demands.

The multiwall polycarbonate is Class 1 surface spead of flame rated, and provides a maximum U value of 1.4W/m2K.

‘The result is a strong system with ‘invisible’ glazing fixing, giving the appearance of an unbroken span of polycarbonate,’ explains Aztec managing director Colin Bennett.

‘It is ideal for low pitches, because of the invisibility of the fixing and glazing system, and the inherent strength of the steel supports, which ensure the system will withstand the greatest possible wind and snow loadings to which it may be subjected in this country, even when fixed almost flat!’

The Elumatec SBZ608 Allows Maximum Flexibility for Greater Production

Elumatec, the manufacturer of window fabrication machinery, has introduced a new model designed specifically in response to the needs of its UK customers. The SBZ608 is an advanced CNC machining centre designed to work in tandem with an existing front end saw or cutting centre, allowing fabricators to maximise production capacity.

Many UK fabricators currently use several front-end machines such as double mitre saws or other CNC models for speed and efficiency, only to be slowed down by machining processes like drilling and routing. The Elumatec SBZ608 has been designed to complement the front-end saw, performing all profile routing and drilling requirements automatically. Data is programmed through the unit’s dedicated processor via disk or network and can be viewed on a colour TFT screen.

After cutting, profile pieces are placed onto an in-feed automatic loading station. The loading magazine can support up to 10 profile bars or rest pieces measuring up to 4.0 metres in length. A barcode scanner identifies the processing that needs to be completed on each piece. Practically all preparations are then handled by the SBZ608, including those for water slot routing, hardware fixing and Door preparations. The centre is also able to process sections containing reinforcement, such as for hardware location and transom hole drilling, including screwing of these sections.

Demonstrating the attention to detail that is applied to the design of any Elumatec machine, up to 30 tools may be stored in the routing and drilling station of the SBZ608, enabling it to cope with varying profile types without manual tool changes.

Attention has also been paid to handling and clamping systems to ensure precision and high performance.

The Elumatec SBZ608 is quite simply the definitive solution to a common ‘bottleneck’ problem, offering levels of versatility, speed and accuracy that are not available from any other single, integrated unit. ‘When measured against competitive stand-alone units, the SBZ608 offers exceptional value for money with a superior return on investment.’ says the company.

New Multi-Function Electric Locks from Abloy®

Abloy Security has launched a new range of patented Euro profile electro-mechanical locks that enable stockists to reduce the cost and complexity of stocking multiple lockcase types, while helping installers cut the time required for both specification and installation. The new, modular range of lockcases will reduce stockholding throughout the delivery chain by up to 90%, with specification being dramatically simplified to just eight basic criteria.

In addition, the electro-mechanical DIN locks have been designed and manufactured to meet the latest EN standards relating to emergency and panic exit doors, plus resistance to fire: EN179, EN1125 and EN1634-1 respectively. The range has also been tested for conformity to draft standards for burglary (prEN1627) and mechanical resistance (prEN12209-1).

As well as improving upon the current range of options available, the new multi-function locks now provide the majority of them within one single lockcase. Functions such as choice of handing; voltage selection; power status (fail locked/unlocked); bolt throw; and hardware compatibility, traditionally determined at specification stage, can now be selected and easily set, during installation.

Incorporating new, patented technology, the lockcases now offer even higher security and safety. A new trigger bolt function prevents false triggering and will deadlock only when the door closes. The new locks also offer the most comprehensive selection of monitoring status indication of any electric lock currently available, making connection to access control, exit and fire systems even easier.

Further developments have been made in terms of user convenience, with the motor locks now taking only 0.7 seconds to open. In addition, the new range of lockcases are compatible with most types of architectural hardware.

Julie Day, Marketing Manager at Abloy Security explains that, 'The new Abloy Euro DIN electro-mechanical locks have been developed in order to meet customer needs and to conform to the latest EN standards.  We wanted to make it easier to specify the correct product and offer stockists and installers a much smaller range of products to help them control costs without sacrificing product quality or performance'.

Glaverbel Launches Planibel G fasT

In response to the growing demand for hard-coated glass, Glaverbel has introduced Planibel G FasT. In addition to Planibel G, this low emissivity, hard-coat (pyrolytic) glass can be toughened quickly in any furnace.

Planibel G fasT differs from Planibel G in that it has an additional special surface treatment that allows it to be toughened with the coated face in contact with the rollers; coated face down - without any damage to the coating such as scratches and marks. This feature changes the physical principles of toughening, balances out the quantity of energy absorbed by the two glass surfaces and keeps the glass perfectly flat without any other form of external intervention. 'Thus, Planibel G fasT is the only Low E glass in the world that can be toughened in any furnace, including radiation furnaces. As most of the toughening furnaces in the United Kingdom are radiation furnaces, processors are understandably excited about an easy to handle glass that can be toughened with no investment in new equipment.' says the company.

Another benefit confirmed by tests carried out by Glaverbel*, is the reduction in toughening cycle times. Here too, processors will appreciate an innovation resulting in increased efficiency and speed, substantial energy savings and reduced costs.

Toughened and annealed** Planibel G and G fasT can be combined on the same façade (for residential and commercial applications) depending on the level of safety required. In addition to having the same neutral appearance, the two products have the same properties, including double glazing units with increased thermal insulation, high light transmission and low reflection. Planibel G fasT can also be assembled into laminated glass for increased safety, or even combined with solar control glass.

For further information about Planibel G fasT, please visit http://www.myglaverbel.com

* Internal and external tests
** Annealed glass: glass that has been subjected to controlled cooling to reduce the presence of residual stress in the glass thus allowing easy cutting. It includes float glass, sheet glass, patterned glass and wired glass and is independent of float glass composition.

New DuPont Interlayers Enable Digitally Printed White Designs in Laminated Glass

DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions recently announced the industry's first PVB interlayers to enable white, digitally printed images and design effects to be embedded securely inside laminated safety glass. The advance is based on new white ink science developed by DuPont for its SentryGlas® Expressions™ family of decorative interlayers.

SentryGlas® Expressions™ decorative interlayers combine ink jet and polymer sheet technology from DuPont to enable fast, custom designs in laminated glass. The technology is backed by DuPont ink jet formulating science, and the company's recent polymer material innovations for the laminated glass industry.

DuPont decorative glass venture manager David S. Cordrey explains, ‘The ability to digitally print SentryGlas® Expressions™ interlayers gives designers the freedom to create textures, images, wayfinding or other visuals in safety glass. To launch the business, we adapted traditional full-colour, high-resolution printing technology to work with selected DuPont interlayers, resulting in decorative glass that meets established building codes and safety requirements.’

Adds Cordrey: ‘In traditional color printing, the substrate, for example paper, provides whiteness in the printed result. However, glass interlayers are often clear, which means whiteness needs to be added, to create white design elements. Adding white ink to the SentryGlas® Expressions™ colour palette gives us that capability - advancing design and production options for the decorative glass industry.’

Digitally printing white imagery onto the safety glass interlayer is a precise, high resolution and easy way to customise glass and create unique environments. Compared with screen printing, using SentryGlas® Expressions™ encourages more imaginative designs that are faster and easier to adjust. The technology also enables interesting new visual options such as gradients of colour-to-colour or colour-to-clear. And production is more environmentally friendly than acid etching, often used for frosted whites.

With SentryGlas® Expressions™ interlayers, the resulting design is embedded inside the glass, safely protected from cleaning chemicals, abrasives, dirt and grease stains, or sources of marring or scratching.

DuPont™ SentryGlas® Expressions™ white ink technology is suitable for decorative glass applications such as balustrades, space dividers, privacy glazing, and light wells.

DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions says that it provides materials, services and innovations for a better, safer world. The business operates within the DuPont Packaging and Industrial Polymers strategic business unit, part of DuPont's $5.3 billion Performance Materials growth platform.

New SpeedTherm Fusing Kilns made by Bohle

Warm glass processing traditionally belongs to the oldest and most creative fields of activity which use glass as a material. For centuries, only very few insiders were privy to the methods and rules of warm glass processing. Today, this knowledge is available to everyone and belongs to the lesson plan of every glass trade school.

In this field, Bohle is known worldwide as a qualified, professional partner. The topic of fusing has also taken a top position within Bohle’s comprehensive range of seminars: there are six different fusing seminars covering diverse aspects of fusing, each seminar being unique, yet tying in well with the others. These are amongst the most popular seminars offered by the company. Since the inception of these seminars five years ago, several thousand international participants have attended them and furthered their knowledge in this field at Bohle. Against this background and supported by the company’s years of experience in the development and production of high-quality glass processing machines, it is a logical step for Bohle to now take the development and production of high-quality fusing kilns into its own hands.

At Glasstec 2004, Bohle introduced the SpeedTherm fusing kiln series for the first time. In all, five standard model sizes are available to meet the diverse requirements of the customer. All the models work with a rapid infrared heating system and have stainless steel housing. The SpeedTherm kilns are controlled by maintenace-free, durable and quiet semi-conductor controls. The handle of the lid extends along the entire width of the kiln and is angled downward, making the kiln operator-friendly and convenient for everyone. Since the handle is also thermally uncoupled, the operator can comfortably open the kiln during the firing process. A further advantage is the large storage space underneath the kiln (from model size 100 and up). Here you’ll find a safe and clearly laid out place to store many fusing materials and moulds. And finally, especially worth mentioning are the built-in observation ports at the sides of the kiln which allow the operator to view inside during the firing cycle without having to open the kiln (from model size 100 and up).

SpeedTherm 220 and 150 will be available in the first quarter of 2005. 'Despite the many improvements now built into the range, the prices will remain as attractive as the previous models, allowing a low-cost entry into this ‘in vogue’ movement in glass in the UK.' says the company.

New Schüco Window Range has Gaskets Pre-Inserted

Schüco has introduced Corona+ a new range of quality PVCu profiles for windows and doors that are supplied with all gaskets pre-inserted. ‘The result is consistent product quality, reduced fabrication times and a greater throughput of finished units.’ says the company.

The specially formulated gaskets have been designed with low sight lines to enhance the appearance of the units without diminishing weldability or weather performance characteristics. Each is purpose-designed for its particular function (fixed glazing, fixed glazing and rebate seal, rebate seal or glazing bead), thus ensuring optimum performance throughout the lifetime of the window.

In addition to being able to offer customers a good-looking, hard-wearing quality product, fabricators who switch to the Corona+ system will benefit from needing to order fewer parts and having to provide less working and storage space on the factory floor.

All Corona+ windows and doors are available in a 60mm or 70mm profile and there is a full range of woodgrain finishes and colours.

The Schüco Corona+ window and door system has been tested and approved by BSI and BBA and the pre-inserted gaskets meet all relevant standards including BS 7412: 2002, clause 5.4.

Shepley Launches the Next Generation of Composite Doors

The demand for composite doors is on the increase with market growth showing a staggering increase of 171% from 1999 to 2004 compared to 23% for PVCu doors. Sales of Shepley's new range of composite doors were up 300% in just 6 weeks following its launch.

Composite doors present a great opportunity for installers to sell the next generation of residential doors. To make sure Shepley customers can profit from this growth market the company has launched a completely re-engineered door range with significant advances in strength, looks and styles.

Shepley's coloured and woodgrain composite features a protective skin made from a modified polycarbonate blend, similar to material currently used in helmet visors, police riot shields and machines. The skin offers greater thermal and UV stability than either ABS or PVC, allowing the door to outperform its competitors in terms of heat and impact resistance. Shepley's composite door provides a heat distortion temperature of around 90oC, and allows Shepley to offer the option of mahogany, oak, rosewood and black finishes, as well as lighter colours, safe in the knowledge that it will not bow, warp or crack if temperatures soar. This is one of the reasons why the door range comes with a full manufacturer-backed 10-year guarantee.

Another significant development is the weather resistant laminated veneer lumber, making it one of the most impenetrable doors on the market. This incredibly solid core has been tested and fully certified by the British Board of Agrement, and is extremely secure, warp-free, weather and fire resistant.

All doors are supplied unglazed with a cassette system providing the homeowner with an endless choice of 28mm glass panels and removing the dangers of pressed glazing. The latest addition to the collection is a new design with the rustic charm of a tongue and groove finish. The range is available in 8 finishes with a range of glass options designed to appeal to the more traditional setting. An option to this design, the composite stable door combines high performance with the versatility of a split panel.

Shepley offers a full 10-year guarantee to retailers and unusually the composite door is available in standard 3-week turnaround. For sales aids Shepley has developed a new consumer brochure designed to position and help sell the door as a premium product, as well as a CDrom full of product news, retail press release, promotional images and in-store POS.

TruSeal Technologies Offers Setting Blocks for Improved Glass Support

TruSeal Technologies, Inc., a world specialist in warm edge spacer systems for insulating glass (IG), offers setting blocks to protect glass against vibration and shock from handling, shipping and wind-loads. Available with and without pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA), TruSeal’s setting blocks are designed to elevate and isolate the IG units from the sash – reducing the risk of breakage.

Setting blocks act as cushions to help support the glass. By elevating the IG unit, the setting blocks help keep the edges from contacting any water that may be trapped in the glazing pocket. The neoprene material makes the blocks resilient, allowing the IG unit to handle stressed conditions. Setting blocks with PSA are recommended for knock-on glazing application.

Other key features of TruSeal’s setting blocks, include:
• Good durability under installed conditions
