Sound Design Simplifies Problems for Fabricators and Installers

The problems caused by woodgrain PVC conservatory roof cappings distorting in abnormal temperatures is eliminated by Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems- without any need to stock and fabricate additional components.

Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems claims it has eliminated the problems caused by woodgrain PVC conservatory roof cappings distorting in abnormal temperatures without any need to stock and fabricate additional components.

The company, a UK producer of PVC/aluminium conservatory roof systems, claims that whilst several competitors’ customers have been plagued through hot weather with complaints of cappings twisting and warping, it has not had one such incident, because of its design.

The Aztec system has always included, as part of its 10 core components, twin glazing caps. This enables each panel to be glazed individually, simplifying and accelerating the installation process, and also means each cap can react independently to temperature exposure. A single capping fixed across two planes does not have that flexibility.

As the sun moves during the day, the faces of the glazing cap are inevitably exposed to different heat levels, with one side moving into shadow as the other moves into the face of the sun. PVC, being a thermoplastic, reacts to the heat, expanding approximately 80 x 10-6 for every 20° rise in temperature, and contracting as it cools. Dark surfaces, such as woodgrain foils, absorb heat, whilst white reflects it, so therefore dark colours increase in temperature more rapidly.

The combination of material and surface colour in a single capping means that during hot weather- such as last summer- single woodgrain and brown PVC cappings have been subjected to accelerated increases in temperature, leading to bowing and bending and complaints from consumers and fabricators.

Colin Bennett, Aztec managing director, comments, ‘The solution for some producers has been to quickly develop a new capping, made from aluminium but including plastic inserts and gaskets to enable it to be fixed in place. This creates additional stockholding and fabrication issues, and adds to assembly time. We have always had twin cappings as a core part of our system, and have not had one distortion issue, as each capping can react individually to the conditions to which it is exposed and move accordingly without the variations in temperature across the component which occur in a single capping and which create the distortion problem in the first place.’

Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems says it has evolved its product based on engineering principles, to create roof systems which offer greater spanning capability (up to 4.5m on the standard range) flexibility in design and glazing options than some other conservatory roofs, yet with fewer components.

'Independent tests showed the Aztec system will withstand the most extreme weather experienced in the UK. Its design also means it is proven to be more weather- wind, sun, rain and snow- resistant than alternative systems, with minimal risk of rain penetration.' adds Colin.

Metalmac Develops New Steel Protection Shield

Metalmac has developed a new steel protection shield for windows and doors specifically for the New Build industry.

The company says that the shields provide protection from accidental damage through adhesion of cement and impact and are also an additional deterrent against vandalism and opportunistic theft.

Metalmac Shields employ the company's patent pending dual invisible fixing system which allows the shields to be installed at the same time as the window/door frames and will stay on until Completion Certificate is sought.

Metalmac Shields allow light penetration, but do not interfere with normal construction methods and are reusable.

Stuga Flowline is Two Machines in Harmony

The Stuga Flowline has been in production for four years now and forty three have been installed throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. The Flowline has been constantly improved throughout this time due to improving technology, improving knowledge and feed-back from customers.

Stuga says that one important plus for the Flowline design is the fact that it is effectively two machines working in harmony. The Flowline has entirely separate cutting and prepping centres with a transfer station in between that is a real and active buffer between cutting and prepping. As the prepping content of the windows increases or decreases these ebbs and flows are smoothed out, meaning that the saw rarely has to wait for a bar to arrive and the prepping centre does not normally need to wait for a bar to clear before starting the next one.

To get the maximum output from a cutting and prepping centre it is necessary for the saw to work continuously as well as the prepping centre. Some machines have a conflict whereby the prepping centre has to wait for the last bar to clear the saw before it can finish and this slows the machine down at this point, thereby reducing output. The Flowline buffer table takes care of this problem as the bar can move directly out onto the table without delay. This is also important at the end of a batch because the Flowline can be loaded for the next batch without delay.

The ‘U’ shaped configuration of the Flowline also reduces the distance between the infeed and outfeed to almost nothing creating much better productivity. In line machines have the infeed and outfeed a considerable distance apart meaning that the operator has to do a lot of walking. The Flowline also has two full colour monitors meaning that when loading the loading-list is right in front of the operator at all times, but when he is actually running the machine he has a second monitor to see exactly what is going on and to control the machine. Both screens are connected to PC’s that are networked together for constant inter reaction.

‘V’ and ‘Y’ notching on the Flowline are carried out before sawing meaning that the saw is not tied up with this process and as a result there is a much better balance throughout the machine, when compared with other machines that utilise the main saw blades for ‘V’ and ‘Y’ notching. It is the sawing speed that decides the final output on modern cutting and prepping centres, as long as the prepping is efficient, which it should be.

‘The rotary tooling head system on the Flowline gives advantages in set up due to it’s versatility and this means that the machine is commissioned in two weeks followed by a one week training period allowing production to start in three weeks instead of the ten to twelve weeks of competitive machines. Stuga never has overruns on installation of the Flowline because of this flexibility together with the fact that Stuga engineers are there from start to finish of the commissioning and are never called away to handle emergency breakdowns elsewhere.’ says the company.

The rotary tooling system also has unseen advantages for the future because when the time comes to add or change profiles or preparations these changes can be made quickly and simply with no re-tooling or adaptations ever required. With the current fast development of profile systems and hardware it is likely that such upgrades will soon be needed.

All Flowlines are designed to automatically handle pre-gasketted profiles as standard, so this will not be a problem with these systems whether introduced currently or later.

The configuration of the Flowline is such that it is only 14.3 meters long, meaning that it is easily accommodated in most factories. Now available in left to right as well as right to left layout the Stuga Flowline is the most versatile cutting and prepping centre in the market place today.

LMC Group Launches new Triple-Glazed Door

The LMC Group, the UK designer, manufacturer and installer of metal and glass engineered solutions, has launched a new triple glazed dual colour door. The Sheerglaze technology is a new solution for architects and specifiers in search of double-glazed doors within a sheer glass façade and features a a low 'U' value of less than 1.2w/m2¼C.

Sheerglaze has been developed to provide architects and specifiers with a bespoke solution specifically designed to provide a glass plane that is uninterrupted by protruding frames.

Sheerglaze doors utilise an aluminium frame, sandwiched between two sheets of toughened glass. This provides a high degree of rigidity to the door construction, whilst ensuring that no part of the frame protrudes beyond the plane of the glass surface. The units are hermetically sealed to provide excellent thermal and acoustic performance. The perimeter frame is hidden by a paint band in any RAL colour, which is applied to the inner face of the glass. The result is a continuously reflective surface with minimal interruption; making Sheerglaze doors suitable for use when combined with secret fixed and bolted structural glass systems in facades and in acoustic partitioning.

Sheerglaze doorframes are designed to be as slim as possible, within the limits imposed by the client's preferred locking and security systems.

Sliding, pivot, hinged and sliding/folding/stacking Sheerglaze door options are all available. Sheerglaze doors are made to order to the customer's required size, the largest to date being 2400mm x 3200mm.

'All Metal UK Sheerglaze installations are completely bespoke and can be adapted to meet any architectural challenge,' says Rod Milicevic. 'Our design team will work with clients to develop their ideas and incorporate any special features or requirements they may have.'

Research and Development Pays Off for Fabricators and Specifiers

UK Fasteners has added a new austenitic bi-metallic screw to its range of quality fasteners for fabricators and specifiers. ‘We’ve invested time and money in researching and developing this product to make it better than others on the market,’ says David Ballinger, Managing Director of UK Fasteners.

‘We’ve used marine grade austenitic to give it greater strength and corrosion resistance. A unique thread base provides excellent pull out resistance and a more secure fastening of hardware to reinforced PVCu. An optimum carbon steel to austenitic stainless steel ratio ensures better thread formation for the austenitic portion to follow into. The under head locating collar on the shallow pan allows for a more secure fitting of friction hinges. We have also made it easier for fabricators and specifiers by featuring our unique head markings on every screw for easy identification and colour coding the packaging to reduce the likelihood of mistakes in fabrication.’

New Securi-Clip from Safeware

An externally-glazed security system is now available from Profile 22 to complement the Bubblex pre-applied gasket profiles.

The Safeware Securi-clip, when used with the Bubblex profile, cuts out the need for double-sided security tape to provide a secure glazing solution meeting the critieria of BS7950.

The Securi-clip also helps to speed up the manufacturing process as there is no need to apply glazing seals or security tape to opening light rebates and glass rebates.

It also keeps the working environment cleaner as there are no gaskets, excess tape or packaging waste materials to dispose of. Working practices are cleaner as there’s no need to handle gaskets or double-side tape.

In addition, sealed units can now be set easily without the need for ‘wetting’ double-sided tape.
