Klockner
Saves Time with Hermetic 45 System
Significant
time savings have been achieved through the use of an advanced new steel
framed curtain walling system, employed for the main elevations to a three
storey commercial office development in Munich.
The Hermetic 45 system, introduced to the UK market by Steel Window Association
member company Klockner RP Profiles,
has made its first successful appearance in unitised form on the building.
Not only is the system strong while still presenting slim 45 mm thick
sections, it is also thermally broken and therefore energy efficient.
The company says that by assembling the transom and mullion sections together
with the insulating glass units in the factory, enclosure of the building
envelope can be achieved in two thirds of the time it would take adopting
a stick-build approach; even with a lightweight aluminium system. This
significant shortening of the critical path for the build programme can
then allow other trades to commence work earlier.
During the Munich project carried out by RP Technik, 3,200 square metres
of the Hermetic 45 units, each one measuring 12 metres high by five metres
wide, were installed using less than three days total crane time.

Fire
Resistant Secondary Glazing
Granada
Secondary Glazing Ltd
recently had Pyrobar, the aluminium secondary glazed hinged unit, re-tested
for fire resistant qualities with a different thickness of glass installed.
Pyrobar
had already been tested to BS 476: Part 20: 1987 which indicates a fire
resistance level of 30 minutes. The original test had used a 6mm Georgian
wired glass. Granada Secondary Glazing took the Pyrobar system to Interver
Securite SA in France to test the hinged unit with the Interflam E30 5mm
thick glass. Pyrobar again passed the BS 476: Parts 20 & 22: 1987
as well as the European standard of 30 minutes fire resistance.
Pyrobar not only has good fire resistant properties but also maintains
the traditional properties of hinged units making it a popular choice
for installation projects.
Interver is an international company specialising in the field of transparent
fire resistance and safety glass. At its research and technology centre
at Interver Securite SA in France, there is a large in-house fire test
furnace which tests for internal fire resistance. Aluminium starts to
melt at 660deg and the temperature in the furnace reaches 800deg after
17 minutes, However the Pyrobar retained its fire resistant properties
throughout the 30-minute testing process.
Interflam is one of Interver's safety glass products. It has been rigorously
tested to conform to national standards as well as the European norms.

Your Imagination with RegaLead Fused Glass
RegaLead,
the supplier of creative options for decorative glass, is adding fused
glass to its range this month. Fused glass has become increasingly popular
across Europe in the last few years and is now finding its way into the
UK window and door market. Fused glass is created by firing
two or more layers of compatible glass in a kiln until the layers fuse
together to give a stunning decorative effect. This style of glass is
very difficult to manufacture consistently due to the technical issues
surrounding glass expansion coefficients and will therefore remain in
the domain of the specialist glass artist. To overcome these technical
problems and still be able to offer this new style of decorative glass,
RegaLead has developed a range of pre- fused glass tiles that can be simply
and quickly bonded to the glass surface rather like bevels.
These fused glass tiles work especially well when bonded on to sandblast
and etched glass designs and the company is also working with Specialist
Glass Designs of Hawick to launch a range of lower cost screenprinted
designs for the door industry. Several of the major door manufacturers
have already agreed to market the products and the Company is confident
that this new style of glass design will prove popular with the buying
public who require more modern looking decorative glass.
RegaLead is launching the system in January with two ranges of product.
The Vetro Suit range is manufactured in Italy using the famous Venetian
Murano glass and offers a series of 80 complex, highly decorative designs.
The Vetro range is available ex stock from RegaLead and an 8 page brochure
showing the range of designs is available from RegaLeads sales office.
To complement the Vetro range RegaLead has developed its own range of
more simple and cost effective designs which will be marketed under the
Fusion brand name. Fusion tiles are manufactured using System
96 glass, from both Spectrum Glass and Uroboros of the USA, and only use
13 glass types in the designs, to enable customers to easily mix and match
tile styles in a design but have matching colour ways. The range of 50
products will be available in early February but samples and information
are available now.
Both the Vetro and Fusion ranges were previewed at the recent G P &
T show at the NEC and Regalead says that customer reactions were very
positive.

Even
Better Egress - Nico Upgrades its Popular Egress Friction Hinge
Nico
Manufacturing,
UK manufacturers of window products, offers a wide range of friction hinges,
bolts and security devices.
The Nico Egress Easy Clean Friction Hinge has proved popular with both
specifiers and installers especially since the introduction of
building regulations demanding mandatory emergency egress from windows
in upper storeys (Building Regulations 2000).
Unlike
some egress friction hinges on the market, which require manual unlocking,
the Nico Egress Hinge is simple to operate providing the minimum
required opening with no awkward catches or buttons.
The simple action of opening the window to its full extent, also automatically
releases both top and bottom mechanisms for safe and easy cleaning from
inside.
Now even stronger
Now, thanks to a recent product developments, the Nico Egress is even
better. The company says that a new design of slide mechanism and high
stack nosebar makes the hinge even stronger and easier to close. These
new features are particularly useful for larger openings where hinge strength
is crucial.
Full Technical Support
Nico Egress Hinges have been approved by many local authorities and housing
associations throughout the country, including Sandwell, St Albans, Canterbury,
Gravesham, City of Edinburgh, Housing 21, Suffolk Housing and Bedford
Pilgrims.
The Nico customer service team can provide in-depth technical advice to
specifiers on the selection and application of all window products for
both domestic and commercial projects.

Kalwall®
Insulating and Diffuse Light Transmitting Panel now Available to the Construction
Industry in Europe
Kalwall
Corporation,
USA, introduced its Kalwall® building panels filled with Nanogel®
Translucent Aerogel for the first time in Europe at Batimat 2003 in Paris
in November. Subsequently, this product has been available to the construction
industry in the UK through its distributor, Stoakes Systems Ltd, in the
Benelux through Hermans NV-SA, and in Spain through Astrawall Iberica,
S.L.
This
new Kalwall product, which the company says is set to revolutionise translucent
panel applications, is the result of co-operation between Kalwall and
Cabot Corporation, the commercial developer of silica aerogel translucent
thermal insulation material, marketed under the Nanogel® brand name.
The combination of Kalwall® and Nanogel® Translucent Aerogel,
further enhances Kalwalls international standing in insulating and
diffuse light transmitting panel technology and, importantly, it has made
a significant contribution to the interior effects available to architects
for new building designs.
Kalwall® with Nanogel® can deliver light transmission and thermal
insulation levels of between two and four times greater than those achievable
with current technologies. For example, with a U value of
0.28W/(m_-K), its insulation performance is four times better than insulating
glass, and gives museum-quality diffuse, glare-free daylight, without
hot spots or shadows. It can also improve acoustic insulation.
Kalwall® with Nanogel® panels offer high resistance to impact,
have good fire retardant properties and are resistant to condensation,
mould and mildew, making the panels a suitable fit in almost any structure
either as a portion of or as complete sections of walls or roofs.
Already specified and installed in commercial and public buildings in
the USA, these state-of-technology panels are delivering energy savings,
improved aesthetics and environmental comfort, as well as a superior natural
daylight experience for the people who use them. The first project was
completed by Kalwall Corporation in November 2002 and involved a swimming
pool building enclosure in Manchester, New Hampshire, USA. Kalwall, an
international leader in translucent paneling, partnered with Cabot to
be the first company to produce a Nanogel®-based building product.
Kalwall® distributor, Stoakes Systems, is a designer, manufacturer
and installer of cladding, curtain walling and roofing systems. The company
believes the ability of new Kalwall® with Nanogel® panel to satisfy
the most stringent current and projected codes for building insulation,
in particular in energy savings, will extend acceptance of the daylighting
panel system by the architectural community.
According to Kalwall® Corporation Chairman, Robert Keller: 'Through
the continuous development of the product line, Kalwall® has retained
its position for more than four decades as the most highly insulating,
diffuse light transmitting system available to the building industry,
globally. With this latest step in technology we are looking to capture
a substantially larger share of the market, particularly in Europe where
building design innovation is an unbroken tradition.'

Quality
Glass Etching Coupled with High Productivity
Guyson
says that its Multiblast® RXS 900 automated blast cleaning system
has almost become the benchmark machine around the world, for automated
glass decoration. The latest one has recently been installed in the Czech
Republic, a region having a long association with glass, for the Czech
manufacturing subsidiary of a large German glass, plastics and printed
packaging company who will be using it to decorate bottles used in the
cosmetic industry.
The
RXS Multiblast® system has been engineered to ensure a high level
of process and machine control; the RXS provides an accurate, consistent
and uniform finish to every component. By eliminating the inevitable variations
in hand processing, component quality, cost control and productivity can
be dramatically increased.
The rubber-lined chamber is equipped with eight Guyson model 900 blast
guns fitted to fully adjustable arms and directed at the component to
ensure maximum coverage effect whilst minimising wear elsewhere in the
chamber. Blasting is carried out on two spindles, which rotate in opposing
directions to achieve complete coverage from two separate banks of guns,
without any shadow or masked areas on any component envelope. After blasting
the bottle is air-washed in a separate chamber to clean off residual media
and dust, prior to the component exiting the machine.
This recent system also included a Model CY900/24 cyclone media reclamator;
material is extracted from the bottom of the cabinet using the airflow
generated by the cyclone and dust collector fans. This material includes
good re-usable media, broken down media as well as material removed from
the component that has been blasted. Through cyclonic action the re-usable
media is separated to the outside of the cyclone, being heavier than the
rest, and is delivered back down to the media storage bin, whilst the
lighter particles are entrapped in the centre air stream and pulled up
through to the dust collector. Including a cyclone separator in the machine
specification not only ensures that only good reusable media is retained
within the system but can also reduce consumable costs by up to 50% compared
with a basic machine configuration.
The dust collector specified for this application was a Model GC16-K5
reverse jet pulse cleaning unit, which provides for continuous cleaning
of the filter elements during the operation of the machine.

Vee
is for Vertical with Kombimatec Automatic Notch Saw
The
vertical design of the AVN4 Automatic Vee Cut Saw from Kombimatec
is the key to its success, offering fabricators three distinct advantages:
space savings, precision and ease of operation. The floor standing machine,
which offers fabricators the ability to cut two profiles up to 75mm each
simultaneously, has also been designed to save time and cost by speeding
up a process that can take up valuable time.
With a compact footprint of just 113 x 77 x 185cm, the AVN4 as
a vertical model takes up considerably less space on the factory
floor than comparative models. This same vertical design also allows the
operator to provide constant support for profiles even when depth of notch
is altered: the support stand can remain at its fixed height, allowing
more accurate end results and quicker process time. The vertical design
also allows off-cuts and swarf to clear more easily. Pneumatic clamping
secures the profile on the saw bed, providing precision in operation.
Cruciform
cutting has also been made easier by the AVN4: a stop has been incorporated
for lining up the profile correctly, and the special guard provided for
safety does not have to be removed to complete the cruciform cut. The
guard automatically moves into position, saving the operator further time,
and has a special opening for the cruciform part to pass though.

New
Glass Collections from GBW
GBW
has launched a new concept of three distinct glass collections for its
PVCu door panels and Discovery composite doors. Consisting of the traditional
Heritage, modern Expressions and top of the range Jubilee, each glass
collection is available in a set of options specific to the sixteen panel
and twelve Discovery designs. GBW believes this initiative will make it
easier to select a suitable style and door at the right cost within pre-defined
markets, as well as providing the opportunity for customers to offer added
sales value.
GBW's
Heritage range combines handcrafted methods of manufacture with a choice
of popular designs. Genuine lead is used for defined leadwork, and Georgian
bars can be incorporated to capture a period look without the problems
associated with cleaning multiple glass panes.
The Expressions glass collection has a more contemporary feel and uses
resin technology to provide bevel glass options within the glass unit.
This makes for easy cleaning, and also provides a 99% block against harmful
UV rays and reduces sound transmission.
GBW's resin 'leaded' designs allow bright, vibrant colours and intricate
designs, not normally available using traditional methods.
Launched in honour of the Queen's Jubilee year, GBW's Jubilee glass range
brings an element of style, sophistication and individuality to any home
with an ornate mix of glass bevels and classic leadwork. Capturing the
surrounding light, the glass bevels disperse an array of colour creating
a new shade dependant on the angle and diffusion of the light. In addition,
combining traditional methods with modern technology, this collection
also includes a choice of sandblasted glass designs.
Alongside the new glass collections concept, GBW has also added a new
design to its door panel range, bringing the current total to sixteen.
The 'Vienna' is more European in design and features 10 glazing apertures
to offer 7 variants - 6 glazed and one solid.
'Glass is becoming one of the key differentials in the highly competitive
door and door panel market. So by clearly branding our glass collections
we're making it much simpler for our customers to select the option that
best meets a specific application and budget, while also giving them the
opportunity to 'sell up' to a higher premium product,' comments GBW's
Director of Sales, Geoff Foster.

Liteflam
Glass Flooring for the Home
Renowned
for its expertise in installing bespoke glass flooring and structural
glass block work in the commercial arena, Roger
Wilde Ltd is now pioneering the use of fire rated glass flooring
panels in the private residential market.
The company has designed an easy-to-install version of its patented Liteflam
Firefloor system specifically for use in the domestic market. This new
system enables architects and interior designers to offer homeowners the
practicality and cutting edge style of glass flooring in areas previously
prohibited for Building Control fire safety reasons.
The new Liteflam units are designed to transform interior living spaces
by introducing a stylish design feature, whilst maximising the availability
and impact of natural light in dark and gloomy lower storey rooms. lncorporating
the very latest developments in glazing technology and benefiting from
extensive load transfer and fire-resistance testing by BRE Borehamwood,
Liteflam glass flooring panels are constructed to the same exacting performance
specifications as those destined for heavily trafficked commercial interiors.
Measuring 750mm x 750mm, Liteflam is ideally sized for domestic properties,
and can be installed in just a few hours by a builder. A hole is cut into
existing flooring and the Liteflam framework is bolted into the joists
allowing for the double glazed unit to fit snugly into the floor. Once
the glass unit, which can be supplied with a choice of clear or frosted
glass panes, is in position, the glazed panel becomes an integral part
of the floor and can be safely walked upon.
Installed individually, in parallel, or randomly across the floorspace
in the contemporary home, Liteflam panels provide highly individual design
features and allow light to flood from one floor to another.

Compact
and Flexible: The EV443/32 Corner Cleaner from Kombimatec Bridges the
Gap
Fabricators
looking for a fast, flexible and efficient corner cleaning method but
who are not yet ready for a CNC solution now have a new option in the
shape of the new Kombimatec EV443/32,
a compact model with upper and lower gasket drills and automatic profile
recognition.
Many fabricators experience costly bottlenecks as a result of the manual
milling during the profile cleaning process, and do not have the factory
floor space to accommodate a large cumbersome cleaner. This is where the
Kombimatec EV443 comes into its own with a very small footprint of just
860mm x 980mm, allowing the machine to fit neatly into confined spaces.
However, whilst the machine efficiently occupies a small factory area
it is nevertheless big on capacity: the EV443 typically accommodates frames
down to 25cm2 and takes profiles of up to 125mm in width.
Perhaps the machines biggest advantage is its ability to automatically
recognise different profile types, something that is an unusual benefit
from a smaller model. Once set, the automatic profile identification facility
selects the correct program cycle for each profile, the cleaning is executed
from start to finish, grooving, end milling and gasket drilling. The machines
functions may also be selected individually as well as in full operation,
giving the operator maximum flexibility.
Variable milling cutter dwell time means that cutters can be controlled
to provide a clean finish. One touch operation locates the frame and starts
the cutting cycle automatically and single side grooving selection can
be switched for woodgrain, foiled or acrylic profiles.
The EV443 has also been built with safety and long-term performance in
mind: special guarding has been designed to protect the operator from
harm, whilst an independent cutter shaft mounting with flexible drive
eliminates motor strain.
