Tie Bolt holds 1.5 tonnes in a Sheer 90 Degree Drop

Conservatory systems suppliers that recommend five way tie bar systems will know how unpopular they are they can be with homeowners. Synseal Extrusions Ltd’s solution is a new tie bolt – a security bolt for conservatory roofs. When it’s used in the calculated positions with the new stainless steel eaves beam cleat, the tie bolt enhances the structural performance of the conservatory.

With expected availability in March, it will not only remove the need for five way tie bars, but also about 40% of three way tie bars. 'This development will make Synseal’s conservatory products more attractive and easier for installers to sell to homeowners,' explains Synseal’s Marketing Manager, Phil Else.

The13mm M8 bolt incorporates an internal grub screw that simply screws up through the head of the bolt and bites into the glazing bar. This simple development achieves a phenomenal performance.

'At our testing facility in Huthwaite we hung almost 1.5 tonnes in a sheer 90 degree drop from one of the security bolts! Alternative systems failed at just over the 1 tonne mark.

This simple evolution of just one tie bolt has cut the excessive cost of five way tie bar systems and it’s much quicker to install. Appearance and performance are improved, making the conservatory more saleable to homeowners.'

It’s a Classic!

Ultraframe has announced the re-branding of its Victorian roof system, which will now be known as the Ultraframe Classic system. A host of new features have been added, including PVC chambered top cappings.

Linda Doughty, Marketing Director at Ultraframe said: 'Ultraframe’s Victorian system has been a favourite for fabricators and installers for more than 20 years and has established itself at the cutting edge of conservatory roof system design and manufacture. Its reputation for leading the market in quality, configurablity and structural integrity means the system has earned its position as the modern ‘Classic’ roofing system.'

New patented technology on the Classic system includes a suite of PVC chambered thermal top cappings. Available in a choice of two new designs, sculpted for a pleasing appearance in either a geometric or a more rounded profile, the PVC top cappings trap air in expertly designed air pockets to enhance thermal efficiency. This design prevents heat loss through leakage points, virtually eliminates cold bridging and condensation, lowers the overall U value, and makes the system 40% more thermally efficient. Installers can be confident that the new technology means the Classic system exceeds expected building regulations.

For consumers it means enhanced comfort levels as the internal temperature is amplified up to four degrees centigrade warmer than competing aluminium systems under the same test conditions.

Another benefit of the new chambered top capping profile is the fact that it virtually eliminates warping and twisting, especially where foils are used, to increase the structural integrity of the roof and reduce the number of call backs for installers.

Hidden gaskets mechanically clamp the glazing material in place for additional security to remove the chance of slippage. Ultraframe has also introduced a 35mm glazing option.

The new value added package on the Classic system includes Ultraselect decorative strips and a choice of foils, crestings and finials. For consumers this means even more options to personalise their conservatory and a value added conservatory package for installers to boost sales.

Ultraframe has also cut the number of components required for the current system, reducing the complexity of the current Classic system without any compromise to system configurability and reducing stockholding for fabricators.

Linda Doughty continued: 'The enhancements to our Classic system are a sign of Ultraframe’s continued commitment to this long established and popular product range. Ultraframe is committed to providing their customers with a range of product options to suit all styles, all applications and all consumers with conservatory solutions which offer the highest quality and innovative designs. While other manufacturers innovate to shave costs, Ultraframe is investing heavily to create a unique range that is quite simply a Classic for today'

New Conservatory Gable Takes Customer Choice to Another High

CWG’s Global Plus conservatory roof goes from strength to strength. Launched at Glassex this year is a new traditional looking gable style roof that the company says takes the CWG concept of maximising customer choice to another high.

Extension of the current CWG conservatory styles to include the new gable is effectively seamless and of immediate value to installers as erection is just as simple and fitter friendly as existing CWG Global Plus styles. The same eaves beam, gutter system, cladding profiles, including the latest fully sculptured profiles for eaves, ridge and rafter covers, are used throughout the CWG Global Plus conservatory range.

The structural stability of the entire conservatory is further enhanced with the gable support system. This means the gutter can run across the front of the gable side, which cuts the number of outlets and soak away routes by half reducing the possibility of leaks.

The strong roof is further enhanced by using the new locking tie bolts which minimises the necessity of tie bars, even with glass roofs so there is potential for use of either of CWG’s new high insulation and sun screening CorbEglaze or SmartPoly roofing products also launched at Glassex.

The new CWG Global Plus gable is stronger, and is easier and quicker to install. There is total compatibility with all the systems fabricated by the Corby Windows Group including REHAU’s 60mm Tritec and 70mm S706 suites, 70mm Kömmerling Connoisseur, 70mm Shield and the new 70mm SynerJy profiles.

CWG’s Global Plus conservatory roof means installers have just about everything they will need to erect the exact conservatory their customer might need. There is no need for compromise. What ever a customer’s requirement, be it style; including the new traditional gable, or finish; from a wide range of woodgrains, woodgrains on white or colours, the Conservatory division of the Corby Windows Group can provide design and structural details that will ensure the success of any installation.

Vistamatic gives Classroom Insight

Vistamatic vision panels, incorporating CGI’s Pyroguard fire resistant safety glass, have been installed in the doors to new science labs at Sir John Hunt Community College’s Whitleigh campus, near Portsmouth.

Established as a comprehensive school since 1990, Sir John Hunt Community College is currently undergoing a £28m campus development, including a new extension with a central atrium featuring a corridor running down its length.

Designed to allow observation without disturbance, the panels enable controlled access into classrooms for added safety and security, as staff can check who is outside and decide whether or not a person may enter. Panels can also be left in the ‘open’ position if desired. Staff have been so impressed that they are considering installing several more of the panels across the school. Spokesperson Colin Stebbing said: ‘The new facilities have really transformed the way that we work, and the Vistamatic vision panels have proved to be very beneficial in improving safety and security for staff and pupils.’

Old and new classrooms run parallel to each other down the corridor, with 10 new classrooms in total added. First floor classrooms feature 250mm wide x 800mm high Vistamatic vision panels in the doors, which are lever-operated
on one side and incorporate FD30 Pyroguard glazing.

The installation of vision panels was slightly more complicated for this application, as the science lab doors were all FD 30 fire rated and the installed glass unit could not in any way compromise the fire resistance issue.

This potential problem was quickly solved by the introduction of CGI’s unwired fire glass – Pyroguard, as one of the unit leaves. Pyroguard is widely tested, both as a single glass and in double glazed form; it is also a market leading fire glass for incorporation into fire doors, with the backing of its comprehensive CERTIFIRE approval schedule.

Pyroguard is manufactured by CGI International and available throughout the UK via a widespread stockist network and in this instance the panes were supplied by Pier Glass of Woolwich.

Vistamatic vision panels meet British Standard BS EN ISO 9002: 1994, as well as BS 6206 for Tempered Safety Glass Class ‘A’. The panels come in a wide variety of designs and glazing materials to suit specific locations and fire safety requirements. Vistamatic can also work with architects and designers to create bespoke sizes and specifications.

Maco’s RAIL Espagnolette gets Secured By Design Approval

The take up of the Maco Reverse Action Inline Espagnolette has been a success which is set to be increased with RAIL receiving Secured By Design status. In order for the RAIL Espagnolette to be approved for Secured By Design Maco had to show its suitability as a security locking device by undergoing a rigorous test programme on different window systems to BS7950:1997. This testing programme has been completed on different PVCu window systems, together with timber and aluminium windows at Maco’s own internal test-house as well as at the BSI.

Security is gained by the provision of up to three pairs of Mushroom Locking Bolts operating simultaneously. On closing the window, the Mushroom Bolts enter either side of a standard Maco Mushroom Striker Plate ensuring that the locking points remain fully engaged during attack.

The design of the R.A.I.L is fully compatible with all Eurogrooved window systems and with Maco having the widest range of Striker Plates on offer means that the product is available to nearly all PVCu, timber and aluminium window fabricators, making it a suitable product for specifiers due to the wide range of compatibility with different window systems.

Business Micros Launches EvoNet

Business Micros has launched a new software solution which, for the first time, enables fabricators to track orders on line from receipt right through to despatch.

EvoNet is an extension of the company’s successful Evolution software and uses barcode scanning technology to give users throughout an organisation instant on-line access to the status of any order.

Graeme Bailey, MD of Business Micros, is very excited about the potential of this new development. He says: ‘EvoNet is a major step forward for users of our systems not just in terms of increasing their efficiency but also in improving quality control, identifying training requirements and improving the speed and quality of management information.

‘The system requires a relatively small additional investment in portable scanners, bar code equipment and a wireless network but promises a very significant payback.’

EvoNet essentially tracks an order from the moment it is placed to the moment it is delivered. It brings together all the relevant information about that order from who logged it to when the glass was ordered, when the hardware was fitted and how long it took to complete and allows any authorised user to access this information from their desktop PC.

As soon as an order is received, EvoNet allows window fabricators to reserve production space. It then tracks all the stages in the order processing, including scanning and linking all POs and documents connected to the order, for example for glass or frame bending.

Once the order moves into production, the system continues to track its progress and ensures that as it is completed each station receives only the appropriate information as to the action required. For example, a sash gearing station would see only the list of hardware required for that sash. Similarly, all the items related to the order such as frames, welded sills and ancillaries are assigned factory locations and can be quickly located on screen.

On the factory floor, Business Micros believes EvoNet promises considerable improvements in efficiency because orders are more tightly controlled than previously and can not be delayed or misplaced without production managers being alerted.

However, Graeme Bailey is convinced that it is in the management information which the software provides that it really scores over current systems available. He adds: ‘EvoNet can produce a full set of management reports for users and can be interrogated to provide information on all the individual elements of the administration and production process. It is potentially a very powerful tool for fabricators.’

Users of EvoNet have the option to extend use of the system to off-site managers or even to customers. Using Microsoft Internet Explorer, customers can view the progress of their order on-line and receive fast, up to date information from their supplier at a time convenient to them.

Business Micros is offering EvoNet as an add-on to its Evolution software and provides a full commissioning and training service.

Relax in Comfort, with Solaglas' New Conservatory DGU Range

Solaglas has developed another differentiated DGU offering, this time for the conservatory roof market. The offer encompasses three double glazed units branded as the SGG CLIMAPLUS® COMFORT range, each unit offering increasing levels of comfort for the conservatory user.

The basic COMFORT unit combines high tech products to create a safety unit with both advanced solar control and thermally insulating properties. It provides twice as much heat reflection as a standard DGU due to a solar factor of only 38% and gives over 50% more heat insulation thanks to the 1.1 centre pane U-value. The aesthetically pleasing blue/grey tint of the unit reduces glare from the sun and the easy-clean coating means the conservatory owner can spend more time admiring the view rather than cleaning windows.

The second product in the range is the COMFORT PROTECT unit which, in addition to all the benefits of the basic unit, also offers significant protection against harmful UV rays by blocking out over 99%. This means that the unsightly fading of furnishings, often a real problem in a conservatory environment, is reduced. The unit also gives peace of mind by offering added security against objects breaking through the glass roof and, when combined with laminated wall units, against break-and entry.

Ultimate comfort is created with the COMFORT SILENCE unit. This product, which has all the features of the PROTECT unit, also gives a clearly audible 6-7Db reduction in noise levels over and above the basic unit (which already gives a 100% sound reduction compared to polycarbonate roofs). The benefit is particularly noticeable when it is raining, and also offers protection against nuisance noise from airplanes, roads, railways and even noisy neighbours when combined with acoustically laminated wall units. So, come sun, rain, or snow the conservatory will be a calmer, more relaxing and more comfortable place to be - which is important if you are investing a large portion of your income on an expensive conservatory.

The SGG CLIMAPLUS® COMFORT units are manufactured at Solaglas MSN's specialist DGU site in Leeds which has, over the years, built up a reputation for manufacturing high specification, non-standard units. Matt Kershaw, Commercial Manager for Leeds states ‘In response to the conservatory market demand Solaglas MSN Leeds has worked hard to develop a suite of products which improve vision areas, control ambient climate and insulate against noise. The SGG CLIMAPLUS® COMFORT family is an exciting range of high performance sealed units that offer the end user the perfect solution to their conservatory needs. All units are manufactured to BSEN1279 and every unit is individually QC inspected prior to despatch. For the fabricator installer, the excellent product range is complemented by a 15-minute fax back quotation service and market leading nation-wide delivery times.’

In order to assist sales to both commercial and domestic buyers a suite of literature is readily available to Solaglas customers, in addition to product samples and heat reflection demonstration units for showroom use.

For further details, email: solaglas.msn@saint-gobain-glass.com, telephone Solaglas MSN Leeds on: 0113 253 8030 or fax your enquiries marked 'CONSERVATORY' to: 0113 253 7659.

Duoshield is 'the Future of PVC-ue Building Products'

'A major leap forward in the technological development of how cellular plastic building products are made is leading quickly to the establishment of a new generation of roofline, cladding and window profiles.' according to Celuform.

Created by Celuform, DuoShield is a co-extrusion process that creates a seamless and extremely tough double skin that wraps around the whole board, front and back. This means that thinner and lighter boards can be produced which feature rigidity and durability equal to, or in excess of, thicker, heavier profiles.
In addition, the aesthetics are improved because the finish is totally seamless, providing a smooth finish.

'DuoShield is the future of cellular PVC,' says Ged Ferris, Celuform's marketing manager.

'We were the first company to manufacture PVC-ue products in the UK more than 30 years ago, with Celuka, a skinless foamed plastic technique that offered significant advantages over the rigid boards that Celuka replaced. The next development created by Celuform was a 0.6mm skin over the exposed surface of the board, a process that is now common to all cellular PVC-ue products today.

'New DuoShield will be applied across all Celuform fascia, soffit, cladding and windowline products,' Ged commented. 'Market leading brands such as Emperor, Duoform, Duoliner, Torus Duoliner and Vanquish, already feature the new technology.'

DuoShield is guaranteed for 15 years. This includes a warranty against colour fading or 'pinking'.

Celuform supplies stockists throughout the UK and Europe.

Darby Pioneers New Conservatory Glass

Darby Glass has introduced Roof-Glas, a new high performance double glazed unit aimed specifically at the premium rate conservatory roof market launched in response to customer demand, and the expected extension of energy efficiency legislation to conservatories.

Chris Roberts, Sales and Marketing Director of Darby Glass, comments: ‘Conservatories represent a major growth sector for us, and in due course it’s likely they will be required to meet the same U-Values as windows. So we’ve taken the initiative and spent six months developing the Roof-Glas concept.’ The result is an IGU made from glass featuring the latest technology available for an unrivalled technical specification, plus the added benefit of an easy clean coating.

Roof-Glas by Darby has a solar factor of 44% to keep a conservatory cool in summer, combined with a U-value performance of 1.1 to help retain heat during the winter. The low maintenance easy clean coating means the glass stays cleaner for longer and requires less vigorous cleaning. In addition, the IGU is argon-filled to reduce rainfall noise levels.

Roof-Glas is available in a choice of colours: Blue, Bronze, Clear and Blue+ which has an even higher solar control factor of 42%. Chris continues: ‘We decided to keep it simple, with just these four configurations in the range which meet the needs of the market and offer varying degrees of light transmission, ranging from 50% for Blue+ to 74% for Clear.'

This glazing development from Darby Glass is expected to generate considerable interest from those involved in the conservatory industry, from roof systems companies to retailers and installers. ‘Glass is often the preferred choice for top-of-the range conservatories, rather than polycarbonate. Now with Roof-Glas the aesthetic advantages of glass can be matched by superb performance that will meet even the most stringent building regulations when they come into force,’ says Chris. Although conservatories are the key target market for Roof-Glas, Darby is keen to stress that it can also provide a suitable glazing solution for any commercial application where solar control and easy cleaning are critical issues.

The introduction of Roof-Glas has involved major investment in new equipment and training by Darby Glass. Roof-Glas will be manufactured at Darby’s Scunthorpe operation and distributed to customers nationwide. Nearly £1.5 million has been spent on state-of-the-art machinery, including an edge-deletion cutting table, new toughening plant and robotic shape head. A major glass supplier has provided training in safe handling of the new glass, while an in-house training programme has covered specific quality and service aspects.

Darby Glass is backing the launch of Roof-Glas with a comprehensive marketing and technical support package. In addition to full colour brochures detailing the features and benefits of the new range, customers can obtain a demonstration kit that includes a heat lamp to prove the product’s performance claims. ‘We’re also offering Powerpoint presentations on disk, and of course, our friendly customer service team and technical estimators are all just a phone call away,’ concludes Chris.

A Triple First from Pilkington

Pilkington has announced that the latest addition to its Pilkington Planar™ range is the most impressive yet, Pilkington Planar™ Triple. Representing the world’s first triple glazed frameless structural glazing system Pilkington says that the product, which has developed from the original patch plate system pioneered by the company over 40 years ago, is the most advanced form of glass curtain walling system available today.

Pilkington Planar™ Triple signifies a major move forward in terms of both improved thermal insulation and design flexibility, and with multiple glass combination, it presents the possibility of further improved solar performance and noise control.

Pilkington Planar™, the structural glass system from Pilkington Building Products – UK, has already revolutionised the way we look at the application of glass as a structural building material, allowing architects to create complete glass envelopes for buildings.

With the changes to the Building Regulations Approved Document L, Pilkington Planar™ Triple has been developed to confirm the company’s position as a market leader in structural glazing and to offer a solution to the demands placed upon the facade designer by the changes to Part L. With an acoustic performance of Rw>42dbA and achievable U values of 0.8W/m2K, the system allows the incorporation of a wide range of glass types and support systems such as glass mullions, aluminium and steel purlins and rigging, without compromising either the aesthetic appeal or the thermal performance.

The Pilkington Planar™ Triple frameless glazing system has been specifically formulated with the façade designer in mind. It enables greater transparency in the building envelope, a style choice currently on the increase in public and private buildings alike, and removes the heat path that exists through conventionally framed systems, thereby reducing heat transfer.

The thermal efficiency of the frameless point supported design provides insulation values for the transparent areas of the building envelope, which would be difficult, if not impossible, to achieve with a conventional framed design approach.

K2 Product Enhancements Offer New Solutions

As part of its ongoing product development programme, K2 is planning to launch three new products to enhance its range.

Adding to its successful track record in ventilation products, K2’s PVCU roof vent is now complemented by an aluminium sash alternative. Utilising the existing PVCU outer frame section, the new sash accommodates 25mm and 35mm polycarbonate or glass glazing and is sculptured to co-ordinate with the K2 roofing system. The aluminium sash maintains all the features and benefits of the PVCU version, including a demountable hinge, concealed fixings and an integral drainage system and offers an additional ventilation choice to the marketplace.

In response to market demand for a valley solution to suit larger installations, K2 has also developed an enhanced Valley Centre. Available from February, the new K2 Valley Centre is stronger than the previous version and has greater spanning capability but remains compatible with the existing claddings, cappings and end cap.

As well as functionality, K2 has addressed aesthetics in its latest series of product launches. The new Boss End Shroud offers the marketplace a new solution to concealing the boss end, making the system user-friendly for the installer. The Shroud is manufactured in a closed cell foam and addresses a common consumer request to mask the join between roofing panels and external boss end cover.

Comments Sally Fielding, Managing Director of K2: ‘Our product development programme is driven by feedback from our customers and where we can see a market need to enhance existing products or update the system with a new innovation we will invest in making it happen. These new products are significant additions to the K2 range and form part of a package of measures – both product and service related – aimed at enabling our customers to address an evolving customer marketplace and retain a competitive advantage.’

Sash Continues to Raise Industry Standards with Introduction of New Locking System

Manufacturer of PVCu doors and windows, Sash UK Ltd, has introduced a new range of locks as standard on all doors.

The upgrade is part of Sash’s continued commitment to raising industry standards by using only products of premium quality in the manufacture of the company’s goods. Part of this initiative has been to introduce austenitic (stainless steel) components as standard.

The new locking system comprises a stainless steel keep and faceplate making it longer lasting and less susceptible to corrosion. It has previously been assumed that only coastal homes have issues with corrosion on their doors and windows. However reports show that up to 90% of properties in the U.K. also experience similar problems. Rigorous tests have proven that austenitic components have a higher resistance to corrosion and therefore last considerably longer than more commonly used ferretic products.

'For 40 years Sash UK has consistently set higher industry standards. Through extensive research and testing, we work with our suppliers to constantly improve our product. Unlike most other manufacturers we introduced austenitic screws and hinges as standard, so customers know they are guaranteed the best quality available,’ said Stephen Morrell, Joint Managing Director at Sash. ‘Sash is currently the only company to be using this particular new locking system on our doors, reinforcing our position as industry leaders in terms of quality,’ he added.

Just the Italian job for Edgetech

Glasstec 2004 was the venue for the successful launch of the For.El fully automated Super Spacer® applicator. Promac Group and Italian company For.El began development of the new machinery having realised the growing trend in the industry towards Edgetech’s Super Spacer. They wanted to open up the market for flexible spacer bar machinery. The new machine was unveiled to a hugely enthusiastic audience at Glasstec.

So what’s so special about the new equipment? According to Joe Hague, Sales Manager for Promac’s glass division: ‘Several machines already use flexible spacer bars in sealed unit manufacture. But we believe the Super Spacer applicator takes things a stage further because of two key reasons. Thanks to its modular design, window manufacturers can buy as much or as little of the production line as they need. It’s also compatible with any existing make of machinery or plant configuration that a company may have.

‘There’s much less waste on change over, or at the start of production. The new design also features a loading platform or lifting bed for the Jumbo reels of flexible spacer bar. This reduces manual heavy lifting and contributes to operator health and safety. There are also several different height options (2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5 metres). A sensor to detect the end of a roll ensures that all the glazing units are complete and eliminates the possibility of a unit being half-sealed at the end of a roll. It all means more money in the fabricator’s pocket.

‘Other aluminium spacer bar machines typically need a minimum of six manufacturing operatives, including those involved in bar bending, dessicant filling and PIB application. With For.El’s Super Spacer Applicator you only need one at each end of the line. The machine also comes with full diagnostic software and a modem link to the manufacturer for remote software upgrades. Everyone’s worked hard to create a product that delivers high-tech performance at old-tech prices. It can be done with the latest Super Spacer product but using machinery like this maximises the opportunity.’
