Guardian
Industries Announces Glass Technology to Protect Floors and Fabrics from
Sun Damage
Guardian
Industries Corp.
has recently introduced ClimaGuard SPF. Designed specifically for
use in residential windows, the company says that ClimaGuard SPF blocks
99.9% of ultraviolet (UV) radiation without any visible change in day
lighting.
Growing awareness of the risks associated with exposure to ultraviolet
radiation has led the public to widespread use of sunscreen, sunglasses
and protective clothing.
Household furnishings have a good reason to fear the sun as well. UV radiation
is largely responsible for the fading and deterioration of furniture,
carpets, hardwood floors and other interior furnishings. This damage is
irreversible. Until now, homeowners have been forced to accept undesirable
tradeoffs if they wanted to protect their home furnishings from the damaging
effects of the sun.
With the introduction of ClimaGuard SPF, Guardian Industries says that
it provides homeowners with the ability to completely block ultraviolet
radiation from entering the home without sacrificing the primary benefit
of windows - natural daylight and outdoor views. The full brightness and
beauty of visible sunlight passes straight through this combination of
patented glass coatings to illuminate the home. Only the invisible damaging
UV rays are removed.
'When it comes to UV protection, ClimaGuard SPF is in a league of its
own,' said Tim Singel, director of residential glass products for Guardian
Industries. 'High performance low-E coatings offer some UV protection,
but not nearly enough and while there are other window technologies available
offering increased UV protection, these products require a range of undesirable
tradeoffs such as reduced natural daylight and a non-traditional window
glass look.
'ClimaGuard SPF is the first window glass technology that delivers complete
UV protection plus superior energy savings and the beauty of natural daylight.
With ClimaGuard SPF, window glass looks the way glass should look - no
bright colours, no dark tints, and no shiny reflections.'

Simpler,
Stronger Jack Rafter
A
new approach to jack rafter fabrication, that is quicker to assemble and
stronger once installed, is being adopted by Aztec
Conservatory Roof Systems.
The
company says that the new rafter takes a new approach to the conventional
technique used by most roof systems, significantly reducing the number
of components required while simultaneously increasing the strength and
rigidity of the rafter. Designed and developed in house by Aztecs
technical team, the rafter is engineered solely from aluminium, giving
strength with lightness of weight.
The new double-handed fixing is screwed to the bar. When the rafter pin
is positioned into the ring beam, the fixing automatically locates into
position on the glazing bar, for the screw to be tightened using a standard
screwhead. The aluminium fixing pulls both elements of the rafter together,
providing improved strength and rigidity without the need to pack for
a secure joint. Designed to accommodate roof pitches as low as 4°,
the new jack rafter design also eliminates the need for complex calculations
to cut the roof section angles, and does not impinge on the glazing when
installed.
Duncan Bennett, Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems design/ development
manager, comments, Some 60% of roofs our customers fabricate are
Edwardian, requiring jack rafters. The process using conventional methods
is fiddly and perhaps not as strong as it could be. The new jack
rafter requires just two components and a screw, as the one fixing is
both left- and right- handed. Our new approach gives a jack rafter that
is much stronger, much easier and much quicker to fabricate and install,
and that requires minimal stockholding- benefits that are central to Aztecs
ethos.
Complementing the new jack rafter is a new capping for hip joints. Clip-fixing
into place, the capping is wider, effectively covering the abutting mitred
joints, and overcoming the problem of exactly calculating and cutting
compound angles.
The jack rafter is the latest in a line of technical advancements developed
by Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems, which to date include a ridge connector
that in one component incorporates ridge clip, internal fascia cladding
bracket and external ridge cap bracket, reducing component parts by 75%
and allowing assembly in minutes, and a new rafter finger that tapers
at the top end, ensuring a neat and secure fit into the boss,
regardless of the number of rafters in the roof and eliminating any need
to calculate angles and chop the aluminium extrusion to fit.

Emplas
Launches New Hardware
As
part of its continual product development programme, Emplas
Window Systems Ltd has
recently launched a new 2D Door Hinge, modified its One-piece Door Keep
and made important modifications to its range of Defender Friction Hinges.
Working
in conjunction with Profile 22, Emplas set about designing a 2D Door Hinge
that not only ensures the highest level of security, exceeding PAS24 door
security requirements, but also complements the chamfered suite and the
new fully sculptured suite of profiles.
Replacing the existing butt hinge, this new design allows both horizontal
and height adjustments to be made in-situ using a 5mm Allen key, even
when access is reduced in narrow reveal areas. In addition to the existing
white and brown finishes, the hinge also comes in black, gold, chrome
and a new caramel (to suit light oak doors), and is available now.
After a review of its One-piece Door Keep, Emplas set about creating a
non-handed keep (available in robust stainless steel) that suits the Safeware
7 high security multi-point lock.
This modification has made the installation of the product easier by introducing
locating alignment marks on both the lock and the keep, with the cam gate
openings increased to 21mm. Retaining its plastic covers for fixing bolts,
the cover plates have been removed from the keep altogether to provide
greater clearance between the sash and frame, without compromising either
security or compression. This new door keep achieves PAS24 security standards.
Design enhancements have also been made to both the Defender and Defender
Egress Friction Hinges to provide better performance on abuse testing,
accurate closure, greater rigidity and all round weather seal protection.
The Defender Friction Hinge now features an extended enclosed end cap,
improved vent arm profiles, modified vent arm fixing hole configurations
and an increased carrying capacity on the 16", 20" and 24"
top hung hinges.
The Defender Egress Fiction Hinge now benefits from a zinc die cast end
cap and support plate, and has been redesigned to include a composite
slider with a stainless steel lever.
Emplas Managing Director, Kevin Johnson, comments: It is extremely
important for us to keep our fingers on the pulse of our changing market.
Our mission is to deliver the very best in the business and it is imperative
we review all of our products regularly, to provide our customers with
the latest in window and door technology.

Ansell
Launches the AlphaTec Glove
Ansell,
a specialist in hand protection, has announced the launch of the first
chemical-resistant glove to incorporate Ansell Grip Technology,
the AlphaTec. Designed as a liquid-proof glove with less force needed
to grip oily or wet objects, the AlphaTec has been successfully
tested at the production sites of 25 major industrial companies throughout
Europe. The company says that trials confirmed outstanding performance
and acceptance, with over 83% of workers claiming they could perform tasks
better.
The glove's combination of grip and chemical resistance together with
the glove's flexibility and dexterity make it a logical choice when dealing
with chemicals. The AlphaTec is recommended for handling and light
assembly applications in environments with potential chemical hazards,
including the chemical industry, printing, mining, aerospace, agriculture,
oilfield exploration and production, and automotive and/or OEM markets.
AlphaTec's carefully designed production process ensures a safe
chemical barrier. The polymer coating does not penetrate into the liner
during manufacture, providing a consistent protection for the skin. AlphaTec
provides a superior level of resistance to a lot of chemicals, and in
particular to hydrocarbon-based chemicals, oils and solvents. AlphaTec's
nitrile coating is also designed to give greater flexibility. The shape
of the glove has been specially designed and features more closely fitting
fingers, resulting in enhanced finger sensitivity and tactility for the
user. The internal lining consists of a seamless knit for reduced friction
and even more tactility.
Tests have shown that over a range of increasing weights, Ansell
Grip Technology provides a better wet/oily grip than any other similar
glove available on the market today. Says the company. Oil
grip tests on comparable gloves show that gloves with Ansell Grip Technology
require from 34-69% less grip force to lift an oily 4.5 kilo object. (1)
According to the US Centre for Disease Control, there is evidence of a
positive association between forceful work and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
The reduced necessity for exertion provided by an improved grip results
in greater object control, comfort, safety and productivity, and can contribute
to preventing the onset of occupational injuries such as Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome (CTS), tendonitis, De Quervain's disease and tenosynovitis.
Ansell's Grip Technology coating offers the AlphaTec excellent
grip when handling slippery objects, a performance which is particularly
marked when grasping heavier objects (4-5 kilos and up). It integrates
microscopic channels in a patented ultra-thin nitrile layer, directing
fluids away from the grip surface, thus leaving a significant contact
area dry with almost the same grip as under fluid-free conditions. With
this improved adherence, workers experience greater comfort, minimising
fatigue and stress.
AlphaTec is the first of a series of Ansell glove ranges to benefit
from the Ansell Grip Technology. In addition to other selected specialist
gloves, Ansell Grip Technology is also being integrated into other
popular glove ranges such as the HyFlex. In launching AlphaTec,
Ansell has chosen to take the lead by directly addressing a major workforce
concern, muscular strain and stress. Says the company.
(1) Comparison between the new AlphaTec glove incorporating Ansell
Grip Technology(tm), the Ansell Sol-Vex 37-675 and competitors'
gloves. Both a power grasp and a precision grasp were tested on oily surfaces.

Auto
Controlled Pusher System Allows Sap650 to Achieve Fast, Precise
Aluminium Cutting
One
of todays difficulties with processing aluminium sections is the
need to achieve fast, high output without sacrificing accuracy. Elumatec,
the producer of advanced profile processing machinery, has developed an
efficient solution to this problem: the SAP650 Automatic Saw. Highly recommended
for commercial and industrial applications, the new machine has a large
cutting capacity aided by an automatic pusher loading system,
yet also produces extremely precise cuts.
The
SAP650 has been designed specifically for high volume aluminium processing.
Its electronic loading system automatically pushes the profile bar towards
the saw blade for controlled, accurate processing. For maximum output,
a high spec version of the machine the SAP 650/15 offers
a loading magazine for five profile bars and automatic in-feed in the
pusher range, allowing the machine to process without interruption. The
SAP650 is driven by a powerful 5.500 watt motor and is equipped with a
500mm blade as standard for processing profile of up to 6.500mm in length.
It can process up to 40 metres of aluminium bar per minute at an accuracy
of 0.1mm per metre. Profile is off-loaded via a roller conveyor for maximum
convenience.
The company says that the quality of cutting and precision achieved by
the SAP650 in addition to its high output is what makes it unique. As
soon as cutting is completed, the profile is automatically pulled back
from the saw blade, avoiding any surface scratching and producing clean
cuts. The saw blade returns to the 0 position without touching the profile
again. Length measuring for cutting lists is carried out by an absolute
measurement system independent of the main drive and different cutting
lengths are programmable on an individual basis. Feed speed can be easily
altered in addition to the cutting height to achieve extreme precision.
For safety and stability, the profile piece is clamped by both horizontal
and vertical devices during the cutting process.
Both the saw blade cutting height and profile feed speed can be easily
adjusted to suit the profile size. Cutting lists may be memorised and
recalled for use again.
The electronic control console has also been designed with stability and
safety in mind: the PC has a shock resistant flashdisk and also has a
disk drive for conventional data exchange. For full compatibility, the
machine can easily be integrated with an existing production network by
means of a 10/100 Mbit network card.

Automatic
Leading Machine Expands a Growing Market for Decra Led in the USA
During
the recent Glassbuild America held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, GED
Integrated Solutions demonstrated its machine that automatically
applies self-adhesive lead to glass in the traditional diamond pattern.
All
the self-adhesive lead used by the GED machine throughout the show was
Decra Led, supplied on 100m reels by UK manufacturer North Western Lead,
which also exhibited at the event.
GED showed how its machine quickly and accurately applies the lead in
a diamond pattern to both sides of a pane of glass. Leading the second
side of the glass (or back leading) is normally a difficult task because,
if the alignment errs by only 1 or 2mm, it will show, and will result
in a leaded panel with an unacceptable finish for the customer.
The company says that it was obvious from the accurately leaded panels
produced during the show that this well known problem has at last been
effectively resolved by GED.
Another problem that has been overcome, is that of the backing paper
to the lead tearing in the machine. Whenever this happens, as it will,
it results in costly down time while the backing paper is threaded through
the machine once again. Says the company.
As any production manager knows, down time has to be minimised to
increase efficiency and profitability, and by using Decra Led, manufactured
with a polyester liner specifically for use on the GED machine, this potential
problem has been completely eliminated, allowing the entire 100m reel
of lead to be applied without interruption.
Whereas 50m reels of lead have been the industry standard for many years,
the introduction of modern technology to what has been until now a manual
process, necessitated change. By doubling the length of the reel, the
number of changeovers has been halved, while still using a reel with a
weight that is easy to handle.
Stephen Hart, Managing Director of North Western Lead commented that the
demonstrations performed by the GED machine at Glassbuild America contributed
greatly to a very successful exhibition for the Hyde-based company, ensuring
that it will exhibit once again at next year's show in Las Vegas.
The beauty of decorative leaded panels is becoming ever more popular
in the US. This is especially true whenever homes or public buildings
such as libraries or colleges are being built that have a little flavour
of the Old World about them. Leaded windows add to this impression, and
also in the growing number of English-style conservatories or kitchens
that are being installed across the country.
Although bespoke designs will always warrant the use of individual
craft skills, the increasing volume of leaded glass panels being produced
means that automation is now taking the place of manual application for
mass-produced units, thus ensuring that production does not bottle-neck
in the glass shop.

Dow
Corning 3540 Fast Cure One Part IG Silicone Sealant
Dow
Corning 3540 Fast Cure One Part IG Silicone Sealant from Geocel
has been specially formulated for the production of insulating glass units;
the company says that it consistently outperforms non-silicone alternatives
like polysulphide, polyurethane and hot-melt butyl. Its easy-application
and fast-cure properties will reduce downtime and wastage for manufacturers
making their production more efficient and profitable.
Dual
Seal Glass has converted to using single component silicone sealant on
many of its commercial projects. 'More and more customers on commercial
projects are asking for units sealed with a silicone sealant because of
its long life,' comments John Reardon from IG manufacturer Dual Seal 'Quality
and reliability is very important on these kinds of jobs and our reputation
depends on it. That's why we are happy to use Dow Corning 3540 on these
kinds of jobs. We have used it on some really prestigious projects such
as jobs for Rolls Royce.'
3540's single component formulation means that Dual Seal can easily stop
and start production whenever necessary, offering optimum production versatility.
This flexibility is further enhanced by the sealant's exceptionally fast
cure times. Touch dry in less than thirty minutes, Dow Corning 3540 cures
rapidly in depth - a typical 3mm bead in less than twelve hours in standard
conditions or less than twenty-four in cold weather making a timescale
of twenty-four hours from manufacture to dispatch a reality.
Dual Seal uses Dow Corning 3540 in eco-frienfly 600ml sausage packs, applied
with a pneumatic gun, changing over to the silicone sealant as and when
required. It is also available in 20 litre pails or 250kg drums.
Geocel says that Dow Corning 3540 Fast Cure One Part IG Silicone Sealant's
long life durability is due to its UV and weathering resistance, service
temperature range and low shrinkage. It demonstrates excellent adhesion
to float, coated glasses and spacers maintaining a flexible seal for decades,
reducing callbacks related to sealant failure.
