Synseal provides support for its busy sales team

Synseal is growing at such a rate – it now produces in excess of 1000 conservatory roofs a week, every week – that the systems company has decided its sales team needs some help. 'We’ve expanded our staff in line with our growth,' explains Kevin Harvey, Director of Sales at Synseal, 'and this is the latest department to expand. It consists of Suky Begana, Jacqui Hodges, Colleen Stocks and Alison Matthews. Their role is to look after existing customers, as well as keep their designated Field Sales Managers’ diary. Each member of the new team has been well trained, so they can respond efficiently to every incoming call.'

Suky, one member of the new team comments: 'I’ve worked for Synseal for three years and I’m looking forward to yet another new challenge. I’ve seen Synseal go through extraordinary changes in my time here, growing at an amazing rate each year, but I have always felt like part of the team that is driving that growth. The new sales support team are all looking forward to making sure customer care remains at the high level customers expect from Synseal.'

New Chairman at SAS

David Fletcher, one of industry’s finest business brains, is set to take Senior Aluminium Systems (SAS) on a ‘quantum leap’ forward as the company’s new chairman.

The former chairman and chief executive of Sheffield Forgemasters takes the helm at what he describes as ‘a very exciting point in time when the business is being taken on a quantum leap forward.’

His starting point is to examine the big shift in direction taken by SAS when it moved to Denaby near Doncaster nearly two years ago and set up its own powder coating facility.

‘What we now have is a state-of-the-art powder coating plant that we must utilise to the maximum, offering customers a one-stop aluminium processing service,’ he said. ‘The company has a solid foundation and tremendous potential for a lot more growth.’

Other priorities are to help complete centralisation of the business to maximise purchasing power and simplify logistics.

With a First Class Honours degree in metallurgical engineering and management from Loughborough University, David has been in the ‘building’ industry for many years. Previous employment includes Aurora Steels, Sheffield Forgemasters and Atchinson Castings UK, and he now works as a business solutions consultant.

He is also a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers; has been chairman of the UK Steel Association; is a Freeman of the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire; past president of the Institute of Cast Metal Engineers and current treasurer.

A keen golfer and gardener (chrysanthemums a speciality!), David lives with his wife Susan in Denby Dale. He has two grown-up children and an 18-month-old grandson, Sam.

Senior Aluminium Systems supplies Britain’s commercial fabricators from its head office in Denaby and two regional service centres in Newport and Livingston.

JB now Consulting for LGT

Glass Tempering expert Jonathan W Barr is now consulting for LGT furthering product development and customer education. JB (as he is affectionately known at LGT) was in attendance at Glassex 04.

LGT is benefiting from JB’s twenty years glass tempering industry experience and he has already assisted in the development of the Toughening Plant that LGT produces.

LGT’s most recent customers that are new to the toughening process have also benefited from the ‘Diamond Star’ Overview of the Glass Tempering process. This is a seminar focussing on the properties of glass & the types of heat treatment used. While also discussing the methods of how to toughen glass. JB delves into the distortion of glass due to process conditions, offering problems and solutions to this and all toughening problems.

Paul Glossop the new factory manager for Future Products sent a testimony through shortly after the seminar thanking JB and LGT. He wrote ‘Having had very little experience of the whole tempering process myself, the overview conducted by Mr J W Barr was of great benefit to both the company and myself. I now feel I have a much greater knowledge of toughening glass, along with its pro’s, pitfalls and respective corrective actions, with a view to dealing with any minor problems in-house in the future.’

Paul Hughes from Alvaston Glass was comforted by the knowledge of JB. ‘This seminar gave me reassurance that I was producing top quality Toughened Glass, JB is obviously very experienced in this field.’

Hallmark Rugby Ref ‘Mackie’ Shows True Spirit

Window and door industry sales representatives are well-known for their toughness, resilience and staying power, but Hallmark Panels salesman and part-time rugby referee Malcolm McEwan – ‘Mackie’ to his colleagues – proved the point when he was knocked flat by a Kiwi flanker during a national league match... and still got up a few minutes later to finish the game!

Mackie, who looks after Scotland for Hallmark and used to play the utility back position for Hawick Harlequins RFC, has been refereeing for 13 years, overseeing many BT National Scottish League matches. During a national league clash between regional clubs Langholm and Howe of Fife, he found himself on a collision course with Langholm’s Ricky Kiori and was left lying prostrate for a full five minutes from the blow. Says Mackie:
‘Kiori was running in to join a ruck and we collided when I went round for a better look. He got me right below the ribs and knocked the wind out of me.’

True to form, though, the indomitable McEwan still managed to find enough breath to blow for a stoppage before he hit the ground, getting up again a few minutes later to continue the game without further incident. Fortunately, no lasting damage was done, and the brave referee was back at work on Monday as usual. Says Mackie:
‘In my job you get used to knock-backs, but you don’t let them affect your performance. Rugby is much the same, although I think I got a much better cheer from the Langholm supporters when I went down than when I got back up again.'
