Pilkington Activ™ Team Overcomes Adversity to Complete Industry Sailing Challenge Final

Having only taken part in the Industry Sailing Challenge for the first time last year - when they finished 8th out of 17 teams in the first round - a crew of Pilkington employees has now surpassed this achievement at the 2004 event, with the team reaching the finals and finishing in 11th place overall.

Celebrating its 18th year in 2004, the Industry Sailing Challenge is the largest corporate sailing event in the world. Created by yacht charter and watersports company Sunsail UK, the Challenge has become the definitive sporting event in which to compete against other businesses and attracts all types and sizes of entrant, from household brand names to smaller organisations. The format of the event is extremely demanding: during initial heats, crews of up to six people per boat sail twice non-stop around the Isle of Wight, a tough task as winds are notoriously high in the area and the Sunsail yachts used for the race are usually manned by a team of eight. The Grand Final of the Challenge – which took place at the beginning of July - included two nail-biting inshore races and one circumnavigation of the island.

Skipper John Brighouse once again headed the Pilkington team, which this year sailed under the Pilkington Activ™ banner. While the initial heats saw the waters remain relatively calm, sailing conditions changed significantly for the Final, says John:
‘We had to battle against really strong winds for the final race but we fought well and thoroughly enjoyed the event. The style of racing required for the two inshore circuits was very different from the rest of the race, and it was something we found very hard as we didn’t have a lot of experience in that area. However, we had done a lot of planning for the circumnavigation and it paid off. We were actually in about 6th place at the half way stage. Unfortunately, in the end we experienced a problem with the spinnaker off St Catherine’s Point and dropped a few places, but I am still extremely proud of what we achieved.’

Demonstrating the true strength of spirit for which die-hard sailors are traditionally renowned, John says that the team will be back for an even bigger and better performance at next year’s event:
‘As a team, we felt much stronger this year – we worked well together and our sailing skills are improving all the time. Having sailed the event twice now, we know exactly what we need to do to hone our technique and we plan another entry – and hopefully an even better result – for the 2005 event.’

The full Pilkington Activ™ team was as follows: John Brighouse (Skipper), David Whatham, Bill Pardoe, Peter Watters, Mike Ball and Stuart Norman.

Glazerite Open Days Kick- Start an Anticipated Summer Boom

Veka fabricator Glazerite Windows recently held two Open Days which were assisted by the appearance of the famous Veka Big Rig mobile exhibition unit. The event was such that Glazerite has already seen an increase in demand from both new and existing customers.

Glazerite Windows, based in Wellingborough in Northants, is one of Veka’s fastest growing fabricators, having increased production capacity four times over in just four years since the company started life in 2000. Glazerite currently despatches around 450 windows per week to the trade but has recently made a number of strategic investments to enhance its service still further and increase production capacity. These include a 3000 sq ft extension to the company’s factory and a £340,000 investment in a new Haffner saw and prepping centre, plus the recent installation of Business Micros’ state of the art ‘Evolution’ production software.

Jason Thompson, Co-Director of Glazerite alongside John Hewitt and James Westley believed it was important to promote these developments in the right way:
‘We felt that our existing customers needed to be made aware of the new initiatives we have taken to improve and substantially increase our capacity while maintaining our high standard of quality of service all of which are equally important to ourselves and our customers. We were very keen for our customers to meet our staff to increase good working relationships and enabling them to put ‘names to faces’. The open days were ideal for these purposes: we gave away holiday vouchers in a prize draw which was won by Classic Conservatories. We also held a Maco UK sponsored golf day, which went down very well with our attendees, and there was a good atmosphere throughout the events.’

‘Some of our major suppliers also attended, which we also thought was important,’ says Jason. ‘We were particularly pleased with the support we received from Veka and Maco. The Big Rig always impresses people and we found it really useful to show people exactly what was available rather than just telling them. The Big Rig enabled us to display and demonstrate our comprehensive range of windows and doors such as vertical sliders, stable and composite doors to great effect’.

Mark Rogers, Sales & Marketing Director of Veka plc was delighted with the event:
‘The Glazerite story is one of real success through hard work and a determination to deliver excellent customer service and Veka is proud to have been part of this
success story.’

Glazerite, which supplies a wide range of doors, windows and conservatories to the trade, was also presented with its ISO 9001 approval certificate during the events.
Its sister company, Double R Glass and Roofing, which manufactures sealed units and roofs, has also achieved all relevant European standards. The company offers its customers a same-day ‘emergency’ turn round service and is proud of its reputation for personal service and flexibility. Says Jason:
‘We are really pleased and encouraged following our Open Days – they were definitely well worth doing, and I now think that we’ll achieve our goal to be producing up to 600 windows per week by the Autumn.’

Total Conservatory Roof Systems Rises to the Challenge Once More

Having sponsored the inaugural Glassex Challenge in 2004 and been impressed with the professional standards and commitment the company witnessed, Total Conservatory Roof Systems has announced that it will once again sponsor the Glassex Challenge in 2005.

Total Conservatory Roof Systems has been involved in the design, manufacture and supply of roofs in the UK for many years and has experienced success with exporting its roof system to America. The company says that it is currently enjoying extensive growth in the UK market, a success that it puts down to listening closely to customers, thorough market research and service excellence.

Joseph Solomons, Sales & Marketing Director for Total Conservatory Roof Systems, says that the company is proud to be given the opportunity to sponsor the Glassex Challenge once more:
‘What really struck us during last year’s Challenge was that the entrants enjoyed taking part but also took their heats very seriously. Each team really wanted to be the best, and that’s the spirit that fuels the vast majority of professionals working within this industry. We feel that events like the Glassex Challenge promote high standards of professionalism and we share the desire to achieve these standards.

‘I also believe that Glassex is the most appropriate setting for something like this. As the main industry event, it attracts serious buyers who take pride in their businesses and want to find the best products and solutions for their needs. It’s all about benefiting the industry as a whole, so it’s only right that the Challenge should take place there.’

The Glassex Challenge, which made its debut appearance at Glassex 2004, was one of the event’s most popular feature areas. Teams from all over the country installed a door, a flat window, a bay window and a conservatory roof, and were judged on speed, finish, health and safety issues including overall quality of workmanship. Prizes were awarded each day to the team that achieved the best combined score across each installation. The overall winners were presented with DeWalt prizes and Glassex Challenge trophies. Other sponsors of the 2005 event will include the Glass Qualifications Authority (GQA).

Budding Installation Teams of the Year should contact Jennifer Calvert on 0208 277 5208 or email mailto:glassexteam@emap.com to register their interest in taking part in the Glassex Challenge 2005, 13 – 16 March inclusive at the NEC, Birmingham.

More Power to his Elbow!

The British arm-wrestling champion in the 70 kilogram weight category is tying in the strength of his right arm with the strength of PVCu windows. Twenty-three-year-old Stephen Kirlew, of Milton Keynes, is being sponsored for his trip to compete in the World Championships in South Africa, by Kömmerling fabricator Affordable Window Systems.

Stephen, whose father, Peter, is proprietor of one of Affordable’s trade customers, PMK Windows, has already beaten the German, Swiss and American national champions and is tipped as a serious contender for the World title in his weight bracket. The sponsorship deal with Affordable will go towards the cost of flights and accommodation.

Stephen has recently had to develop a new technique, following an injury which won’t be healed before the World Championships in November. He damaged a cartilage in his wrist last year, which is likely to need an operation. ‘Because of the injury, the most popular technique - the hook - puts too much pressure on my wrist.’

He is now perfecting a second technique, known as the outside method, or the top roll, which focuses on bending the opponent’s wrist back by putting pressure on their fingers. It means having to be extremely quick off the mark, inflicting the top roll on the opponent before he can use the inside technique on Stephen.

Eddie Gaughan, Managing Director of trade fabricator Affordable Window Systems, says it’s important to encourage competitors, and support them to go as far as they can. ‘It’s particularly important in minority sports which receive little or no funding.

‘Without adequate sponsorship, talented sportsmen very often have no chance of achieving their full potential. Stephen has already gained national success and recognition - Affordable Windows is pleased to support him in his dream of becoming World Champion.’

Now with around 100 regular trade customers, Affordable manufactures Kömmerling window systems from a three-acre site, and with an investment of over £1m in the latest technology, has a capacity of 3,000 windows a week. PMK has been an Affordable customer since starting up two years ago. Says Peter: ‘I’ve tried a lot of windows over the years, but the strength of the Kömmerling brand and Affordable’s back-up is like the strength in Stephen’s arm - phenomenal!’

CWG ‘On The Box’

Windows, fabricated by the Corby Windows Group have appeared ’On The Box’ in a television programme called ‘Our House’, a new house renovation show on Britain’s leading lifestyle channel, UKTV Style – weekends from 10am. In a fresh approach to home improvement television, the aspirations, designs and capabilities of a host of nationally known TV home make-over experts are featured in this thirty episode series on a channel watched by over nine million viewers.

Ultraframe's Guild Membership Guarantees Trust for Customers

B & P Windows says membership of Ultraframe's Registered Conservatory Installers scheme (URCIS) approved by the Guild of Master Craftsmen guarantees a good service to the company's customers and builds on its long reputation of trust.

B & P Windows was presented with its member's certificate at the Ultraframe showroom in Clitheroe. Business partner Stephen said he and his partner Paul Pritchard were very proud to be a part of the scheme.

He said: 'We are absolutely delighted to have been accepted for membership of URCIS. We have been in business now for 22 years and work hard at providing the ultimate service for our customers. This accreditation gives our customers confidence in both the product and the company.'

To be accepted for the scheme B & P had to pass an installation test to demonstrate the company's ability to do the job to the highest standard, then undergo a number of vetting and selection procedures including homeowner references. The company has now committed to Ultraframe annual training and regular monitoring of its performance.

Ultraframe's Sales Director, Peter Allen said: 'The Guild is the most comprehensive scheme of quality accreditation in the industry, promoting the highest standards of workmanship and service. By selecting a company from the scheme homeowners will be selecting an installer who has met the Guild's vetting criteria, uses 100% Ultraframe roofing systems and has passed an assessment installation course.

'It allows the customer to make an informed choice of contractor and assures them of an excellent level of service and quality.'

The Right Solution from Thermasure

Portal Products is demonstrating its confidence in the performance of its Thermasure wood grain panel with an industry promotion.

It is offering to replace any defective woodgrain panels with one of its Thermasure panels, providing the failed panel is returned to its Cheltenham factory for inspection. Participants don't have to be existing customers, however the offer is limited to one door panel per customer.

Having recently expanded its range of woodgrain panel finishes, the company believes its product is one of the most reliable on the market. The Thermasure panel is available in Rosewood, Sherwood Oak, Walnut and Mahogany to match all leading frame profiles.

Explains Portal's General Manager, Peter Cole: ‘We're putting our money where our mouth is to show how reliable our woodgrain panels are. Woodgrain door panels are still failing in the UK through temperature extremes causing them to crack and bow.

‘This causes a lot of frustration for suppliers and homeowners alike, with some companies, offering a 10-year guarantee, forced to supply panels that inevitably need replacing every two years or so,’ continues Peter.

‘Using Thermasure panels saves companies the time and expense of replacing inferior panels. Through careful design and proven quality construction, Thermasure provides the right solution,’ he adds.

Woodgrain represents around 16% of the English panel market and nearly 30% in Scotland - where some of this country's greatest temperature fluctuations are to be found. Since 1999 when Portal developed a sustainable solution to woodgrain door panel failures, tens of thousands of Thermasure panels have been installed for satisfied customers.

Key to the panel's performance is COMPAX, a new thermoplastic modified polycarbonate material, which is now used in the construction of all Portals' Thermasure door panel skins and has passed stringent independent tests conducted by the BBA, consistently out-performing alternative PVC and ABS woodgrain materials.

The Thermasure panel construction incorporates a number of additional features that help the product to perform. Panels have a vented core that allows expanding gasses to escape to the door sash, thus preventing any build-up under the mouldings which can cause blistering, and a patented PORTAPACKA system, that allows room for the COMPAX skin to expand and transfers any packing pressure to the plywood core.
