AGS Promotes PVC Flat Roofing on Peak Time TV

Known in Devon and Cornwall for its professional marketing, AGS Home Improvements has added Sarnafil pvc flat roofing to its television advertising programme.

Simon Wootton, AGS Marketing Officer, comments: ‘AGS puts its reputation first and takes on only the best products. We've been using television since 1987. Our overall market strategy is to maintain very high awareness of AGS and promote our full range of home improvements which now includes windows, doors, conservatories, blinds, roofline and Sarnafil. It's a brand awareness campaign. It works by boosting the impact of our normal lead generation activities.

‘AGS started using Sarnafil about 16 months ago. The roofing material comes in different colours including terracotta, grey, and blue. Although one and half times more expensive than alternatives, it lasts three to four times longer. The BBA assessment is a great selling point too. We have the training, guarantee, and assurance from Sarnafil to give us the confidence we need to sell it.

'Filmed in the summer of 2003, the new ad was launched in the autumn. The 30 second ad includes film footage of AGS' customers keen to get their moment of fame on the telly. Released periodically through January, February, and March, there's a break over Summer before re-commencement in the Autumn. The ad is run from Friday to Monday peak time and covers all of Devon and Cornwall.'

CertainTeed Gears Up Again with 2002 Daytona 500 Winner Ward Burton

CertainTeed Corporation, the North American building products manufacturer, expands its marketing partnership in 2004 with NASCAR Nextel Cup driver and 2002 Daytona 500 winner Ward Burton (that's him in Car 22, having a bit of a spin).

For the fourth consecutive year, Burton will represent the entire CertainTeed line of building materials, including: roofing, siding, windows, insulation, fence, deck, railing, foundation systems and pipe products. As part of the partnership, Burton will appear on behalf of the company at 12 select NASCAR races at CertainTeed-sponsored hospitality venues as well as the company's Little Rock, Arkansas commercial roofing plant in April. More than 2,000 professional contractors and distributors are expected to attend.

'I'm proud to have CertainTeed as an on-going sponsor. Since 2001, they've been dedicated to my success - something my fans and I really appreciate,’ said Burton. ‘Having grown up in a family construction business, I truly appreciate quality building materials - especially those made by CertainTeed.’

The strong partnership continues to be a great success through mutual support between CertainTeed and Burton. Burton's understanding of the building materials industry helps him relate well with CertainTeed contractors. By that same token, contractors enjoy meeting Burton and cheering him on during each race.

‘Many of our contractors and distributors are big racing fans. Being involved with NASCAR is a great way to bring our customers together and show them our appreciation,’ says Mike Loughery, Communications Manager for the CertainTeed Exterior Products Group. ‘Burton is a perfect fit because of his understanding of our business. It makes NASCAR that much more fun when we can cheer for someone we know well.’

This year, Burton sports the colours of a new team from behind the wheel of the No. 0 NetZero HiSpeed Chevrolet. During his career, he has earned seven pole positions, five victories, 24 Top-five finishes and 79 Top-10s in 322 Winston Cup starts. His most memorable victory came in 2002 when he captured the coveted Daytona 500.

Network Veka Goes to ‘Extremes’ with Major Desert Challenge

Network Veka is backing its associate Professor Brian Cunningham in a world record bid to make the first ever kite-powered crossing of the Gobi Desert.

The organisation is endorsing its motto of ‘Reliable in the Extreme’ by sponsoring the expedition that will take the team across one of the most remote and unpopulated parts of the world. If successful, they will be the first ever to achieve this feat as well as attempting at least one endurance record on the way.

The Network Veka 2004 Gobi-Kites Expedition presents a tremendous opportunity to reinforce the organisation’s reputation among consumers for quality and reliability, according to Managing Director John Ogilvie.

‘It connects perfectly with everything expressed in our motto ‘Reliable in the Extreme.’ The whole exercise is not only about defeating extreme and hostile weather conditions but also dependability, endurance and technical excellence.
‘We have planned a series of official and media events leading up to the expedition itself and we are also looking into a number of charitable links.’

Prof. Cunningham is a seasoned adventurer and extreme sports enthusiast as well as an internationally recognised branding expert and a consultant to Network Veka. He is best known to the trade for his lectures on ‘brand personality’ as presented to the last Network Veka Conference as well as corporate and academic audiences across the world.

His most recent adventure, the Kit Kat Ice Kites Expedition across the Antarctic in 2002 attracted widespread media attention but was thwarted by one of the most windless periods on record at the South Pole.

The Gobi Desert forms a large part of the entire country of Mongolia and is legendary for its extreme weather conditions and the naturally tough indigenous people who make it their home.

The Network Veka 2004 Gobi-Kites Expedition is planned for September when the winds are predicted to be North Westerly. Travelling by 4x4 from the capital Ulaanbaatar, they aim to travel over 1,000km in the kite buggies from the Altay region, first heading South Easterly then turning North East to the finishing point in the Erdenaalai region. During the journey, the team will traverse the country’s famous Desert Of Dinosaur Bones.

Along with Brian Cunningham will be two other experienced kite-buggy operators, Kieron Bradley and Peter Ash, with support from Brian’s wife Christine as photographer and medic.

Video footage from the expedition will be passed to an independent production company, Creative Touch as the basis for a TV documentary.

The buggies have been designed by Kieron Bradley especially for this expedition, incorporating many refinements such as high-tech alloy wheels to withstand the punishing terrain. The kites are also designed specifically for the conditions and are being supplied by PKD.

As well as the first traverse of the Gobi, the team aims to set a new record for the furthest distance travelled by kite-buggy in 24 hours.

The equipment will all be tested to the full when the team take part with other kite-buggy fans in an organised crossing of the Sahara in late May.

A special website, http://www.gobi-kites.com is being set for the expedition and is intended to carry regular news updates and pictures.

Power-kiting is growing rapidly across the world as a motive force for many sports vehicles such as surfboards, skateboards and ice sleds as well as buggies. But it could also have more serious uses, as Prof. Cunningham explained:

‘It is a completely fuel-free means of land transport so the potential in environmental terms and for the developing world are quite considerable.
‘This is a tremendous opportunity to try to push back the boundaries of what these remarkable vehicles can do. Although this is a very serious undertaking, we aim to have a lot of fun too.’

Conservatory Roofing Brings Fun in the Sun!

Conservatory roofing has brightened up the life of builder Paul Bennett - he’s just won a £4,000 holiday in the sun in the Uzone roadshow summer draw!

Paul was just one of thousands who went to conservatory systems designer and manufacturer Ultraframe’s roadshow to see the Uzone roofing system. There were more than a hundred roadshows held across the country. Paul, who attended the show at Lister Trade Frames in Stoke on Trent, is now determined to use Uzone on his next project.

He said ‘I was stunned and surprised to hear I’d won the holiday, it’ll be fun choosing somewhere to go. I had a great time at the roadshow and was really impressed with the system. It’ll save me a lot of time with its 75% fewer installation steps and I love the new choices, including the 25 millimetre polycarbonate and the variety of colours. It’s going to make it much easier for us to sell it and install it.’

Paul, who runs his family business J M Bennett in Swadlincote in Derbyshire, is not alone in his praise. A survey completed at the roadshow but just released reveals that 86% of people who saw Uzone would use it, 62 % said it would definitely generate new sales and 86% were convinced it would save them time on site. The words used to describe it were ‘innovative’, ‘well engineered’ and ‘time saving’.

Uzone is the new roof system from Ultraframe, the international designer and manufacturer of conservatory systems. Clicklock is the click-fit joint connection technology that’s at the heart of Uzone. It means speedy, practically bolt-free and virtually tool-free on-site assembly.

Uzone is Here at Listers and 'It's Great!'

The new conservatory roofing system, Uzone, has arrived at Listers and sales are booming says the company. 'The new roof not only is the most thermally efficient and technologically advanced on the market but it cuts installation times by half. The launch was attended by more than 45 customers and a record 12 Uzone roofs were sold on the day. Selling them is one thing but installing them is another. So what do customers say after installing their first Uzone roof?'

'I was extremely impressed. It's great!. Everything was absolutely spot-on. No cutting to size everything was prepared, and it fitted together like a dream. The installation time was easily cut by half. Fantastic product.' said Mike Underwood. Castle Windows & Conservatories.

'The Uzone roof system is an excellent product. It has loads of features that are very straightforward, resulting in installation being very much quicker. It has taken a large amount of the technical difficulty out of installing conservatories. This allows me to make the same amount of profit in less time!' - Cyril Dutton. CJ Dutton Windows and Conservatories.

'Uzone prices start under £850 but the main saving is on your installation time - and you know what they say - 'time is money'. Now you can save on both when you buy the Uzone Conservatory System from Listers.' says the company.

Aztec Support takes Cyclists to National and International Success

One of the UK’s top cycling teams - Yasumitsu Schlapp - has achieved major international and national success this season- thanks to sponsorship from Aztec Conservatory Roofs.

The two, both of which are showing significant growth and success over the competition in their respective fields, joined forces at the start of the 2003 season, with Aztec backing the Manchester Velodrome (National Cycling Centre) based team.

At the end of the season, success included World Masters titles for Carine Van Shie and Glynis Francis, National Champion 1km for Dave Robson (who also won Bronze in the World Masters Sprint), three national records and U12 Champion for Jo Wilman and National U16 Champion for Jo Tinley. Team members also won more silver and bronze medals at World Masters level plus seven National Masters titles- including three championships won by Evelyn Kenyon.

Additionally, the team became NW Champions in the 22km Scratch, and has three youngsters in the British Talent team. Currently one of the team Jon Norfolk is a member of the GB National team and two members are in the Welsh National team.

The team was only founded in 2001. It already has won several World Masters titles and multiple National Champions among its members, yet all its members bar one had never tried track cycling before joining the club.

Commented Andrea Ingram, co-founder of the team, ‘Our motto is to ride and entertain, and we seem to have achieved considerable success on that basis! We have incredible team spirit, and the Aztec sponsorship has made a hugely valuable contribution to our success this year. It has enabled us to compete further afield, in more races, and gain experience, particularly crucial for our younger riders.’

Added Aztec managing director Colin Bennett, ‘Cycling is a sport that just doesn’t get the exposure, but is one in which we excel. It also has a synergy with our conservatory roof system, with the elements of speed, attention to detail and engineering. It is great to be able to contribute something to help our riders, both now and of the future, develop and improve.’

Burles Conservatories Star in West Coast Film

Chief executive of the Burles Group, David Burles, set off for the West Coast recently to watch the filming of his latest masterpiece.

The ‘Star’ is an advanced conservatory, constructed with windows and doors manufactured by Veka fabricator Modplan, using the Versatile Roof System and installed by ‘The Man From Modplan’. The location was not the West Coast of California, but the West Coast of Wales, where lottery money has funded a new, state of the art media centre and film studio.

One of the few in the industry to run four companies without a salesforce, David is no stranger to film sets, having used radio and tv commercials to promote Modplan Wales, the retail division of the Burles Group, since its inception in the ‘80s. On this occasion, the three very different commercials are designed to communicate to the consumer just how ‘versatile’ a conservatory can be.

The face and voice of Jake Sharkey, who many will recognise from Hamlet Cigar and Levi Jeans commercials, co-stars in one of the productions, whilst the familiar face of Gill Morritt was also on board. Gill has been taking part in Modplan advertising since 1985, both on screen and as a model within Modplan literature. ‘She looks just the same as she did back then,’ says David. ‘I don’t know how she does it!’

The design of the Versatile Roof allows the ring beam to act as an integral gutter, which not only saves time on site, but adds to the appearance of the finished product. Manufactured from pultruded grp, which offers a higher strength and more consistent engineered product, the ring beam is reinforced with aluminium sections for even greater stability and strength, whilst the lightweight grp ridge offers a neat finish with both external and internal ridge covers located to ‘stops’ for accurate, yet simple, timesaving methods of construction.

The company says that the ease with which a Versatile roof can be constructed that is the key to its popularity with installers. In fact, during filming, ‘the man from Modplan’ started at 6.30am, constructed a complete conservatory and after three hours filming broke it down again – and it was all done by 1.00pm to start the next production after lunch!

‘Obviously we didn’t have any footings to dig’ comments David, ‘but if we hadn’t had the Versatile roof, we would have had to allow extra days for filming!’

The Modplan Wales commercials will be shown on both HTV and ITV2 in the near future, but if you miss the star of the show on tv, visit Interbuild 2004, where the Versatile Roof System will be in the spotlight on Stand D24 in Hall 6.

Emplas Fit for the Future with Profile 22

One of the UK’s longest-established independent trade fabricators, Emplas Window Systems Ltd held a product launch Open Day with main suppliers Profile 22 and Ultraframe.

This follows a period of substantial investment by Emplas in both new products and machinery to boost product quality and marketing support for its customers.

More than 100 customers and prospects attended a special presentation at Rushden & Diamonds Football Club, near Wellingborough to hear the rationale behind the decisions and what they can expect throughout 2004 from their trade supplier.

According to Managing Director, Kevin Johnson, an expanded quality product range backed with unrivalled marketing support and a strong, well-specified presence in the commercial sector were among the reasons Emplas has chosen Profile 22.

‘Throughout our customers have stayed loyal to us and we are anxious to maintain our reputation for supplying a quality product and providing the right kind of supportive environment for them to grow and prosper with us,’ said Kevin.

'Profile 22 is a proven system, simple to fit, covers all window styles and now comes with Safeware, a market-leading hardware range. Now that fabrication is made simpler with the new bubblex post-applied gasket, we believe we are ‘fit for the future’ and to offer the best possible product and service to our customers,’ continued Kevin.

In recent months, Emplas has made considerable investment in its premises, people and production capacity. This includes a 45,000 sq ft purpose-build manufacturing plant with capacity for up to 1,000 frames per week, plus the appointments of Graham Eardley, Operations Director and Neil Chirnside, National Sales Manager to drive greater efficiencies and sales. New equipment totalling around £200,000 has also been installed, speeding up fabrication and turnaround times.

Profile 22 has also invested heavily with £1.8 million spent on the company’s research and development programme, marketing support packaging and new products, including a new curtain walling system to be launched early in 2004.

Sales and Marketing Director, Rob McGlennon outlined the comprehensive offer from the systems company, while Product Manager, Nic Rossano explained the company’s approach to designing simplicity, superior performance and innovation into the fully integrated range of products.

In an inspired presentation, Emplas Sales and Marketing Director Richard Young conveyed the company’s enthusiasm and optimism for the future. Through an in-depth analysis of the market sectors from retail to commercial, he explored methods for exploiting new opportunities - particularly in the rapidly-growing £40 billion conservatory market.

New products include online ordering allowing customers to process their requirements electronically and a full range of 70mm windows and doors.

Afterwards, customers were in an upbeat mood, with Mark Powell, of Mark Powell Windows, Bristol commenting: ‘A very informative day, and great news on changing back to Profile 22 – it’s a profile I’ve been used to for 15 years.’

In conclusion, Kevin told customers that with £2 million investment in premises, people and production facilities, Emplas is very much ‘fit for the future to face a changing frame market’ and facing 2004 with confidence.
