It's A Bind

A new tool to help 'seal the deal' for both conservatory fabricators and retailers has been produced by Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems.

The company has reached the culmination of a programme ofinvestment in sales aids, with the production of a glossy, durable binder containing all its sales and ordering literature, plus two CD- ROMs.

The result is a handy, portable but long-lasting tool that contains in one location everything the Aztec fabricator needs to sell the Aztec system, and ensure he always has the necessary components, and for the conservatory retailer to sell to the end-user.

Colin Bennett, Aztec managing director, explains, 'We all know the frustration of having lots of different sales and ordering tools provided, that get scattered around and tatty. It results in wasted time for everyone, and an unprofessional impression. We are aiming to ensure our customers, and their customers, always have everything they need readily to hand, smartly presented, so they look as professional as possible which inevitably helps win business.'

The A4 colour binder has been carefully designed to include separate sections on purchase orders, sales aids, technical manual and technical updates. It also incorporates all purchase order information on an easy-to-use CD, plus a CD of Aztec's video 'Once in a Generation', in which TV motoring/engineering journalist Tiff Needell explains the benef!ts of the Aztec system for both conservatory retailer and the end-user.

Copies of the binder are available on request from Aztec Conservatory Roof Systems:

Top Free Fastner Guide Gets Revamp

A guide to window fastener selection and fastener performance has been updated and revised and is available free of charge.

The complete pocket guide, produced by European fastener manufacturer SFS intec, has been a favourite amongst specifiers and fabricators since its introduction in 1999. In handy pocket format, it gives guidance on why fastener selection matters and what to look for when choosing high performance products for windows.

Its relaunch comes at a time when choosing the right products becomes ever more important as the industry risks facing an influx of inferior products imported from the Far East by dealers.

‘There is no doubt that windowmakers and specifiers are going to be targeted by those seeking to sell Far Eastern products which simply do not have the real life track record of exemplary performance that the European SFS products offer,’ says SFS intec director Mike Mortell. ‘Fastener performance is too critical to the success of a window installation to take the risk.’

‘SFS’ bimet fastener, with its unique recessed head design, remains the first choice fastener for affixing friction hinges, outselling the combined sales of all other bimetallic fasteners in the UK.’ adds Mike.

Copies of The Complete Pocket Guide to Window Fastener Specification – one of a series of handy guides prepared by SFS for the window industry, are available free by calling 01904 610077.

New Inter-active CD Proves Uzone fits Fastest!

Ultraframe is releasing a new fully interactive CD-Rom, complete with new product options and a price calculator.

A fitter in a film sequence shown in the CD-Rom was asked to erect Uzone, the duo-pitch conservatory roof system of Ultraframe, and three other roofs comparable in price to the intended price of Uzone. After more than ten hours of filming the fitter was interviewed. He said Uzone was the easiest to build, thanks to its Clicklock joint connection technology.

Helen Fothergill, Ultraframe’s Marketing Director said: ‘We are very excited about the new CD, which was always planned as an update to promote the new options that will give more choice to the Uzone range. We are delighted that Uzone is proving such a success with existing and new customers. We are looking forward to an even bigger share of the market this year.’

The CD-Rom, due out in the next month, shows the new Uzone options of Light Oak and Rosewood foils and the 25 millimetre polycarbonate, giving customers not only a faster fit but much more choice. The inter-active price calculator allows customers to see exactly what the costs are for all the options in an instant.

GGF Chief Executive Calls for Realistic Attitude from Consumers

The GGF has recently launched on its web site, electronic versions of its consumer leaflets on Low emissivity Glass (Low – E), for both England and Wales and Scotland.

Low – E glass has a surface coating that allows short wavelength heat from the winter sun to enter the home through the glazing. This solar energy works with the domestic heating system to warm up the room, which then gives off long wavelength heat radiation. A large proportion of that long wave heat would normally disappear back out through windows made with ordinary glass. However the Low E coating reflects that heat back into the room, keeping the heat in the home.

‘The industry has worked incredibly hard to meet the Government’s energy efficiency targets and we should be pleased with our progress. As a consequence of energy saving there has been a rise in consumer queries and their expectations on what this glass can provide,' said Nigel Rees, GGF Chief Executive.

‘By putting a coating onto glass, visual effects could occur, most notably in direct sunlight, but this in no way diminishes the performance of the glass. I hope our leaflet will assist companies in allaying any consumer concerns.’ He concluded.

The leaflet can be downloaded from: http://www.ggf.org.uk/news.phtml

Quality Technical Support Literature for UK Fasteners’ Bi-Met

UK Fasteners has launched a piece of technical literature to accompany its new range of bi-metallic screws. ‘We don’t believe in producing literature for the sake of it. It should be useful for fabricators and specifiers,’ says David Ballinger, Managing Director of UK Fasteners.

‘This technical guide highlights the benefits of our new bi-met over others on the market. It provides head type options and details of the comprehensive testing carried out on the new bi-met before launch. The guide has everything a fabricator or specifier would need to know and more. As well as talking about the benefits and tests, it also details the 20 year, £20m insurance backed warranty available on our stainless steel products.’

Edgetech Launches Brochure for Architects

A new dedicated Architect and Specifier brochure has been launched by Edgetech IG Inc. Detailing the company’s Warm Edge Super Spacer technology and the specific options and benefits available to specifiers, it goes into specific details that are important for specifiers.

‘It’s designed with architects and specifiers in mind,’ says Andy Jones, Sales Manager for the UK and Ireland.

‘Not only does it detail the range of options available, it also compares the performance of our product against the alternatives available. It’s easy to use and talks in architect friendly terms. We realise that architects are inundated with materials and product information, so it was important we made it as easy as possible to use as well as making sure it looked it the part.’

Veka's Environmental Plan Outlined in New Brochure

Veka plc, the manufacturer of PVCu profile systems and building products, has produced a new brochure detailing the extent of its commitment to the protection of the environment. The new brochure, which illustrates how the company can achieve sustainability for PVCu products such as windows and doors, is designed to attract potential partners for PVCu recycling within the UK.

Veka claims that its enivironmental credentials as a PVCu manufacturer are unsurpassed. The organisation has its own purpose-built window recycling plant situated in Behringen in Germany, certified in 1997 as a specialist disposal company that can guarantee environmentally friendly PVCu recycling. Fully automated, the plant is capable of accepting whole windows including glass, metal and gaskets, which are crushed, milled, sorted and separated into component parts. These components can then be re-distributed for incorporation into new products both within and outside the Veka Group.

PVCu processed at the Veka plant can be made into re-usable material that may be combined with virgin polymer without any loss of quality. 'Veka was the first company to establish such a plant and, accordingly, has also been the first to take the lead in formulating policy for re-processing PVCu products.' says the company.

The new brochure includes a summary of Veka's environmental accreditations, an examination of the company's recycling plant, Veka Umwelttechnik, and the
potential for recycling 'end of life' windows and doors for the UK market. Copies
of the brochure can be obtained by calling Veka on 01282 716611.

Tired of Making Do?

The PVCu replacement market is becoming increasingly mature, bringing with it stronger competition and the need to up-sell and replace replacements. To tackle these issues installers have to concentrate on the key skills of retailing and out-perform their competitors in selling, installation and customer service. However, this requires time, expertise and resources – three reasons why outsourcing to a major trade fabricator is increasingly the choice of successful installers. That’s why Shepley is launching ‘Tired of making do?’, a new business guide on outsourcing for installers, examining all of the most critical issues installers must consider to make an informed decision between continuing to manufacture or outsourcing.

Industry consultant Mike Rigby, of Michael Rigby Associates, comments, ‘Many small to medium sized fabricators, and even some large fabricators whose skills are in selling, marketing and installation, wonder if they’d be better off doing what they do best and giving up manufacturing. Often this thought goes no further because it’s a complex and difficult question to answer. Without a comprehensive checklist of questions to structure your thinking and pinpoint the costs of fabrication, you cannot say what is best for your company. Anything that helps fabricators and installers make the difficult choices has got to be welcomed.’

‘Outsourcing is the use of external resources to carry out activities traditionally handled in-house - in this case manufacturing’, explains Gary Torr, managing director of Shepley. ‘It used to be viewed purely from a financial perspective as a way of reducing variable costs. However, companies are increasingly recognising that outsourcing is a powerful tool for business growth. Working in partnership with an effective supplier allows a company to focus on what it does best and keep up-to-date with new technologies. It also saves time and offers greater flexibility for the installer. We feel outsourcing helps our customers to put the quality back into their lives and the sales back into their business’.

In today’s increasingly competitive world, running a company demands more from owners and their time, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Shepley’s business is to help customers work smarter, not harder. Whether companies manufacture their own frames or buy in, Shepley believes it can minimise the burden of rising costs, fixed overheads, seasonally fluctuating demand, finding reliable staff, the wage bill, quality control issues and the continual fire fighting of daily problems associated with manufacturing PVCu frames or dealing with unreliable suppliers.

The outsourcing guide is also useful for installers who are thinking of switching suppliers as it highlights the benefits companies will get if they buy from Shepley. To order your free copy of Shepley’s guide to outsourcing and switching suppliers call Shepley on 0161 339 2433.

This means we can offer installers a package of complete benefits, including fully accredited components’.
