BPF Windows Group Launches Two New Publications

The British Plastics Federation Windows Group (BPFWG) has recently launched updated versions of two of its most popular publications. Mid-October saw the publication of the new ‘Specification and Performance requirements for Gaskets and Weatherstrips for Windows, Doors and Curtain Walling’ and this was followed by the update of the ‘Code of Practice for the Survey & Installation of Windows and External Doorsets’ in early November.

The new version of the Survey & Installation Code of Practice (CoP) now includes reference to all the main window frame material types. When the BPFWG decided to update this Code of Practice, it felt that a document which covered all the main frame materials would be useful, so it engaged the SWA, BWF and CAB, and requested their input. Following a number of meetings between the four associations and some lengthy discussions, agreement was reached and new CoP was born.

Those of you, who are familiar with its predecessor, will notice another significant change, namely the removal of the sections on bay windows. These sections have been removed because of the forthcoming changes to the Building Regulations, which will require the submission of structural calculations for all bay window installations. Because of the complexity of this issue, the BPFWG will be publishing a stand alone CoP, that will advise on how to complete and present these calculations. This change has been reflected in the price of the new CoP, which at £20 is less than half the price of its predecessor.

The updated Specification and Performance requirements for Gaskets and Weatherstrips now includes up-to-date references and information relating to changes in British and European Standards since the last edition. As well as specifications for materials, the document also gives guidance on the selection of appropriate classes of performance from the recently published BS EN 12365-1, the transposed European Standard for the performance of gaskets. The document is also being reviewed by the British Standards Institute (BSI), with a view to it forming the basis of a British Standard.

‘Both documents are very important to the continued success of the window industry and we would encourage anyone involved in the manufacture or installation of windows to purchase them from the bookshop on the BFPWG website (http://www.bpfwindowsgroup.com/bookshop.cfm).’ says the organisation.

Cool New Brochure Now Available from Pilkington Building Products – UK s

Pilkington has been responsible for many of the major innovations that have enabled glass to develop into a multi-functional modern building material. To showcase the latest innovations, the company has designed a new brochure, which highlights its complete architectural product offering and specifically the recent additions to the new solar control Pilkington Suncool™ HP range.

The solar control range has been extended by the addition of three new high performance products; Pilkington Suncool™ HP Brilliant 30/17, suitable for atrium and overhead glazing, Pilkington Suncool™ HP Neutral 70/40, which offers superb neutrality, and Pilkington Suncool™ HP Brilliant Blue 50/27, which provides a distinctive blue colouration.

Each product combines excellent solar control properties including high light transmittance and low reflectance with thermal insulation to provide improved energy conservation.

In addition to the high performance solar control range, the latest solar control version of the Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass, Pilkington Activ Suncool™ HP 70/40, will be detailed in the brochure. The product offers high light transmission with reduced total solar energy transmittance together with an attractive appearance. In addition, it will also literally keep itself clean by harnessing the two natural elements of ultra violet light and rain. The technology uses UV light to break down organic dirt deposits on the glass surface and then uses rain to wash the dirt away.

The aim of the brochure is to help customers to select the right glass for each project by presenting clear and relevant information about the products and their applications. It demonstrates the effectiveness and adaptability of Pilkington’s products and provides architects and specifiers with a useful point of reference.

The Natural Choice in New Retail Literature

Hot off the press is a new range of retail literature from Duraflex. ‘The Natural Choice in PVC-U’ is a colourful pack containing an aspirational lifestyle brochure and loose-leaf specification sheets, all enclosed within a matching folder. Duraflex consulted its customers on both design and content and believes the new literature reflects contemporary trends in home interiors. All items within the pack can be over-printed with the retailers’ own contact details if required.

Duraflex Marketing Services Coordinator, Jane Rayner, explains, ‘Our market research revealed that women are often the decision-makers when it comes to purchases for the home, so any brochure for this market must appeal to them.

Most of our customers also felt that although today’s homeowners are more knowledgeable it was important to keep any technical information simple and relevant to their concerns when choosing new doors and windows, which are primarily thermal performance and security.’ And according to Jane the loose-leaf format has also been well received as it gives retail installers the opportunity to tailor information to a specific product offering.

At the heart of the new literature pack is a 20-page glossy brochure, which promotes the key messages of quality, lifestyle and security through words and images. This is complemented by a variety of specification sheets that outline the options available in the Duraflex Diamond Suite, including the Featured and Bevelled systems, Patio and Residential Doors and Colour Options. In addition to production information, there are sheets on security, maintenance and accreditation.

Jane concludes ‘This pack is just the first phase in a brand new retail offering from Duraflex to help our customers promote the benefits of the Diamond Suite to consumers – so watch this space for more exciting developments. And we’re also in the process of updating our commercial literature too.’

New Manual on Wood Windows from TRADA Technology

TRADA Technology has published a new manual aimed at establishing the principles of good practice in the design and specification of wood windows.

‘High performance wood windows’, written by Patrick Hislop RIBA, is intended to aid architects in selecting commercially available windows or in designing windows specifically for a project. A secondary aim is to provide design guidance to joinery companies who take responsibility for the detail design and ultimate performance of the windows they manufacture.

The manual concentrates mainly on domestic-scale windows and on outward opening casements, mostly of ‘flush joint’ design.

Regulation requirements mean that insulated glass units of 20mm or more are now the norm. ‘High performance wood windows’ includes proposals for improving insulation and weather resistance, operational safety and security standards, for effective fixing and weathertight jointing to surrounds and reducing maintenance requirements.

Chapters cover: appearance, performance, design, glazing, fittings, finishes, specifications, installation and maintenance. This edition replaces TRADA Technology’s previous publication ‘Wood windows – design, selection and installation’.

To purchase a copy, please telephone the Publications Department on 01494 569602 or email mailto:info@trada.co.uk. Cost: to TRADA members £20.00 + £3.00 p&p; to non-members £30.00 + £4.50 p&p

Bankit Increases Resource for Local Authorities

Bankit, the not-for-profit resource set up to help local authorities to meet recycling targets, has expanded its education portfolio with the launch of a glass recycling DVD and CD. The film has been produced in response to local authority requests for more information on the glass recycling process.

The DVD, which is available free of charge through the Bankit website - http://www.bank-it.org - follows the process of recycling glass from kerbside and bottle bank collection through to the manufacture of new containers. It also explains important aspects of glass recycling, such as the effect that colour separated and mixed glass collections have on the economics of reprocessing and remanufacture.

Nigel Pritchard of Rexam Glass, the company behind the Bankit initiative, said: 'Local authorities told us at our recent Waste Action Forum that they wanted to understand more about the glass recycling process. In response to this we produced a film that takes waste professionals through the processes of collection, reprocessing and on to the manufacture of new glass containers.

'We also plan to produce another film that will be aimed at educating school children about the benefits of glass recycling. We hope that seeing this will make them get involved in recycling at an early stage and also help get their parents to recycle more glass as well as other recyclable materials.'

Bankit, which is a Rexam Glass initiative, supported by Glass Recycling UK, reinvests any money made from the sale of its materials back in to the resource to help develop new initiatives. The glass processing film is available in either DVD or MPG format (for playing on computers).

Bohle's Catalogue in the Frame

Thousands of items for the picture framing industry are included in Bohle UK’s new 454-page catalogue – the only one of its type in the UK. The catalogue is based on Bohle’s full-colour, fully-priced format recently introduced for other parts of the company’s extensive product range.

The new one-stop-shop catalogue, called ‘Framing & Art Gallery Products 2004/5’, contains for the first time a range of gallery furniture including easels, canvas stretchers and glass art in frames. It also includes gallery rails, mount boards, glass, mounting sealing, and laminating products and equipment, plus all manner of consumables. The catalogue contains additional pages on art glass products and Bohle training seminars.

Gary Dean, Managing Director of Bohle UK, says, ‘We have a very well established business, and market-leading position, in the supply of picture framing products in Germany, Austria and Spain, and felt it was long overdue that we offered the UK market the same opportunity to access these products.’

He adds that Bohle had to wait until its new central warehouse in Manchester was ready, as the company wanted to offer these popular items ex-stock in the UK for next-day delivery. ‘Our full range is available in this catalogue so customers can easily purchase products that were previously only sold in some European markets. This means that a higher quality range can now be obtained in the UK, as well as some very exciting new twists on picture framing products,’ says Gary.

The catalogue is available free from Bohle on 0800 616151.
