VDMA
ServiceForum at glasstec 2002
glasstec is the glass industry's leading event. Over 1000 international
suppliers and 55000 visitors from all over the world are expected. glasstec
offers specialised information for every facet of the glass sector including
glass machinery, glass production and finishing up to glass trade.
Within the special show 'glass technology live' VDMA for the first time
offers you a ServiceForum, taking place October 30, 2002.
With the ongoing search for ways to reduce production costs and improvement
of efficiency, glass industry views are changing towards total productive
maintenance concepts. Furthermore, a high use of capacity and just-in-time
deliveries requires a specialised support of machinery suppliers and
service availability. New solutions include tele-diagnostics and corresponding
software programs, but also simplification of the fabrication process
and well-trained labour. Therefore, service and maintenance seem to
be a combined task for glass industry, machinery and equipment suppliers.
The symposium is intended for the information exchange of business professionals
on the highest level.
The ServiceForum will be held on October 30, 2002 from 9:30 a.m. to
1p.m. in Hall 11.

To make it easier for visitors to gain an overview of glasstec 2002 the
halls of the Düsseldorf Trade Fair Centre will be divided into categories.
Halls 12 to 17 for mechanical and plant engineering, Halls 10 and 11 are
reserved for the glass industry, and Hall 9 the centre for the glazing
trade.
"glass
technology live" in 2002
Every successful trade fair is accompanied by a high-calibre specialist
ancillary programme. The special show "glass technology live"
will be presented in a separate space measuring 4,000 sq m in Halls 10
and 11. Since 1990, different examples of glass applications have been
showcased in special exhibitions. This unique concept celebrated its debut
at glasstec 94. The project, which attracted keen international interest,
was realised by Messe Düsseldorf in close collaboration with the
Institute for Structural Engineering and Design, University of Stuttgart.
It was the first time that the topic of "Glass in Architecture"
was presented on such a grand scale and, most importantly, in such an
inter-disciplinary framework. The "glass technology live" exhibition
bridges the realms of design and planning with implementation and realisation.
Excellent outlook for glasstec 2002, say organisers
With what is already an outstanding registration tally, one thing is clear:
in 2002, glasstec will once again go down in the record books. We can
state even today that the final results for this year's event will exceed
those of 2000. Our current list of countries shows that a number of exhibitors
are opting to book larger stand areas than two years ago. On the quality
end as well, glasstec 2002 is upholding the high standards that made it
the No. 1 in its industry. Both the global companies of the glass industry
and international machine builders will be making an appearance in Düsseldorf.
High marks for glasstec 2000 from visitors and exhibitors
But records alone do not make a successful trade fair. It's vital that
visitors and exhibitors are themselves satisfied with an event. In 2000,
88% of exhibitors and 97% of visitors pronounced glasstec "good"
to "very good".
The primary segments represented by glasstec visitors in 2000 were the
glass industry (flat glass, hollow glass, special glass, etc.) with 47%,
followed by the skilled trades and retail (32%). Architects, students
and service providers made up 15% of attendees.
For exhibitors, strong specialist expertise is a decisive criteria when
it comes to sizing up visitors. At the last staging of glasstec, 65% of
visitors had sole or joint authority to make procurement decisions and
21% of these described themselves as being in an advisory capacity.
Glass
as an aesthetic concept in architecture
In a centrally located architectural exhibition within the glasstec 2002
trade fair, taking place in Düsseldorf from 28th October to 1st November,
between 20 and 25 international architecture projects and designs currently
under construction will be featured.
Displayed in the form of photographs, drawings, architectural models and
1:1 façade details, the exhibits will demonstrate how collaboration
among architects, engineers, the glass industry and façade builders
leads to new solutions and highly innovative building and façade
types. The projects are to be grouped into the following categories:-
management of light, solar technology, glass as an aesthetic design element,
façade technologies and structural glass engineering.
Each new generation of glass development produces new themes that have
to be addressed within a design context. During the last century, the
development of greenhouses brought nature to the fore. Now we are seeing
an urban trend in the guise of transparent façades in cities. The
façade of the future must complete the circle, creating new relationships
between interior and exterior design, allowing interplay between the constructed
world and the natural. Synergy between art, architecture and industry
- today taking the role once played by artisans early on in the design
process - is of prime importance. By contributing the expertise that often
determines design, industry also helps shape architecture. Dialogue becomes
increasingly vital - fostered by trade fairs such as glasstec.
The glass industry will develop materials offering ever-better performance,
with dynamic g- and k-values allowing them to respond to new demands from
the construction industry. Ideally, this will come to pass with fewer
materials and mechanical elements in facades or, as Buckminster Fuller
put it, "doing the most with the least". The façades
of tomorrow must offer solutions that are both ecologically and economically
feasible.
Alongside renowned architecture firms, glasstec's tradition of presenting
forward-thinking works from students at international academies and universities
- with the aim of opening them to discussion during the fair - will continue
this year.
In co-operation with the glass industry, the event is also unveiling designs
on a 1:1 scale. This will make it possible for the prototypes - some of
which are not yet eligible for permits - to be shown for the first time
and in some cases will mean the debut of new production and design processes.
The central theme of this year's designs is the load-bearing performance
of glass as a structural element.
Special materials will also be presented alongside these architectural
projects. The cross-section ranges from high-performance insulation glass
through to daylight systems and hologram glass to photovoltaic modules
and glass collectors. The solar exhibition at glasstec 2002 will showcase
special "glasstec specimens" illustrating the diversity of potential
solar technologies in uniform sizes and designs. Glass is an ideal material
for solar energy collectors generating both thermal and electric energy.
The application of new technologies can help address the inherent problem
of glass' minimal insulation properties.
During the mornings, the glasstec 2002 symposium on the topic of "Transparency
as an aesthetic concept in architecture" will be steered by glasstec's
sponsoring associations. The afternoons will be divided up into three
thematic groupings to be handled by designers and architects. The discussion
will also extend to the projects presented in the architectural exhibition
as well as the student projects.
The topics on the agenda are:
Day 1: Building, power plant or thermos?
Day 2: New materials, technology, aesthetics, decoration
Day 3: The façade of the future
The special exhibition will be accompanied by a companion catalogue and
will also be showcased on the Web.
