Alcoa Presents UltrAlloy 6020 at Aluminium 2004 World Trade Fair and Convention in Germany

Alcoa announced on September 20th that the Aluminium 2004 World Trade Fair and Convention in Essen, Germany would include a presentation of Alcoa's UltrAlloy® 6020, which removes lead from aluminium precision machined parts, increases machining productivity and boosts machine shop competitiveness.

The presentation by Alcoa Global Cold Finished Products took place between 9am and noon on Wednesday, September 22nd in one of the conference halls.
Aluminium industry members were presenting their product and service portfolios at the trade show, which more than 600 exhibitors from 38 countries attended.

While there has been a significant movement to eliminate lead and lead-containing products in the U.S. and abroad over the last 20 years, lead removal has been a dilemma for the majority of parts manufacturers. Since the 1980s, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has helped to phased out lead in gasoline, reduced lead in drinking water, reduced lead in industrial air pollution and banned or limited lead used in consumer products, including residential paint. Like the EPA, the European Union is also looking to greatly reduce lead contamination in the environment.

Alcoa's UltrAlloy® 6020 alloy solved the dilemma for the metals industry. Alcoa removed the lead as an alloying element and developed an alloy that has an A rating for machinabilit. UltrAlloy® 6020 is a 6XXX alloy with all of the inherent six series advantages: corrosion resistance, joinability, anodisability, etc. that provides machined chips comparable to 2011 commonly recognised as the benchmark for aluminium alloy machinability.

Growing Markets Presented at glasstec, 9 - 13 November 2004

glasstec in Düsseldorf will provide information on the latest developments, processes and products in the ‘FPD’ - Flat Panel Display - segment. Leading market research institutes expect demand to go up by 20% annually over the next few years - enough to offer international representatives of the sector and scientists a forum for exchanging news and views in the form of two technical symposiums. The special ‘glass technology live’ show will also focus heavily on the world of flat panel display.

Display technologies already play a major role in ICT. Information and communication systems increasingly feature flat screens that are not only ousting conventional cathode ray tube screens but also completely new applications thanks to their outstanding properties in terms of space and weight savings, low energy consumption, etc. More specifically, hand-held devices such as notebooks, mobile phones, smart phones, digital cameras, video visors or PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) could not be built without using flat panel displays.

The increased use of flat panel displays in PC monitors (and also for a growing number of TV and video applications) and the high demand for handy, portable information systems have hugely boosted the demand for flat panel displays; this goes hand in hand with a growing demand for the refined special glasses that are used in FPDs.

To support the production of ever flatter and lighter products manufacturers are already offering display glass with a thickness of as little as 0.03 mm. And their product characteristics are constantly optimised thanks to permanent research and development. Thin glass can even be adjusted to a certain extent to a bending radius - like a film, making it possible to embed thin-glass substrates even in very complex sandwich structures. Thin and flexible substrates are also a pre-requisite for making new applications for LCD (Liquid Crystal Displays) and OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) happen.

Rapidly increasing demand and the on-going development of new technologies make the flat-display market an extremely interesting and economically attractive challenge for all parties involved. The constant flow of knowledge and exchange of information are high on the agenda - and this is also the aim of this year's glasstec.

GPD China 2004 Attracted almost 200 Chinese Glass Processors

The first Glass Processing Days (GPD) China seminar was held recently in Peking, China. The aim of this technical seminar was to offer the latest technology and market information to the Chinese glass industry. GPD China 2004 was organised by Kyro Group’s Glaston Technologies. The event attracted almost 200 glass processors from China and its neighbouring countries.

GPD China 2004 was an opportunity to meet with key members and experts of the glass industry and learn about the latest technical know-how from world reknowned companies. The preparation of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and Shanghai World Expo in 2010 have already created several building projects in China and they will give the entire construction industry tremendous opportunities. Glass, as one of the most popular and versatile materials, will take its share of these interesting projects.

The GPD China seminar gave solutions and methods for fresh approaches. Glass Processing Days (GPD) started organising local events between the global GPD conferences, which focus on one market areas’ own glass processing trends and characteristics. The first local GPD was arranged in conjunction and co-operation with Glass Processing & Technology Exhibition held in November, 2003 in Birmingham, United Kingdom. GPD China was the second local GPD event. This two day conference was found useful among the industry and visitors.

The Glass Processing Days Conference has been held eight times in Finland. The first conference in 1992 was attended by 30 experts. By 1997 the conference had achieved the attendance of 900 visitors.

Glaston Technologies is a leading supplier of glass processing machinery, with a complete product range of pre-processing and safety glass machinery as well as tools. The division’s customer service network has 230 customer service personnel. Glaston Technologies comprises Tamglass, the safety glass machinery specialist, and Z. Bavelloni, the manufacturer of pre-processing machinery for glass. Glaston Technologies is Kyro Group’s Glass and Stone Technology Division. Kyro Corporation is a solid and growth-oriented technology company, which is listed on the Helsinki Exchanges.

Video Simulcast from TruSeal at GlassBuild America

From the GlassBuild America 2004 trade show floor in San Diego, California, show visitors were able to watch full-scale insulating glass (IG) unit production in Wisconsin. The TruSeal Technologies, Inc. booth included a 50" plasma screen that displayed a real-time simulcast of IG production for windows from the Weather Shield® Windows & Doors manufacturing facility in Ladysmith, Wisconsin.

TruSeal, a specialist in flexible spacer technology for IG, partnered with Medford, Wiscinsin-based Weather Shield, a leading window and door manufacturer, for this simulcast production. Weather Shield employees operated a T.A.P.E.-AT (Totally Automated Production Equipment – Advanced Technology) IG fabrication system, which is designed and manufactured by Cleveland, Ohio-based Besten, Inc. and adapted for TruSeal’s flexible spacer systems. Production included fabrication of IG units featuring TruSeal’s DuraSeal™, a patented, flexible, warm-edge spacer system. DuraSeal is designed to reduce thermal conductivity, provide warmer edge of glass temperatures, improve condensation resistance, provide superior argon gas retention, and improve surface and corner appearances of IG units compared to other flexible spacers.

‘Live window production is the best way to show our products, manufacturing equipment and processes in action,’ says August J. ‘Gus’ Coppola, president of TruSeal. ‘Applying the same cutting-edge thinking to the GlassBuild show that we apply to our product development, we transported visitors electronically to a live factory floor instead of setting up production on the show floor in San Diego. We are fortunate to have a strong relationship with an innovative company like Weather Shield to help us bring off-site window production to the show.’

The GlassBuild America exhibition ran from March 10-12, 2004, at the San Diego Convention Center. Live IG unit production demonstrations via video simulcast occurred at TruSeal’s booth at various times during the show.

During the scheduled breaks from the T.A.P.E.-AT production, TruSeal showed various manufacturing and production line layout videos on the booth’s plasma screen.

In addition, TruSeal’s GlassBuild America booth featured demonstrations of the PURFECT GLAZE™ family of warm applied reactive urethane glazing sealants. Through a new partnership with National Starch and Chemical, TruSeal brings these specialty window glazing adhesives to the residential window and door industry. The adhesives include PURFECT GLAZE G for general applications, SA for special applications and H for high strength applications.

Window production is not a new addition to TruSeal’s trade show repertoire. At the interGLASSmetal/FENESTRATION World (iGm/FW) 2003 trade show in Columbus, Ohio, the company performed live commercial window production right on the trade show floor. Using T.A.P.E.-AT equipment destined for Weather Shield’s Ladysmith facility, Weather Shield employees ran five shifts per day during the show, producing multiple units per shift. The employees produced two sizes of window units (26.75" x 16.375" and 26.75" x 34.375"), some of which were also filled with argon gas right in the production line, using the Besten-designed Quik-Dose™ liquid gas filling machine. All units produced on the show floor were then shipped to Weather Shield for placement in frames to later be sold to consumers.

Ohio Displays, Cleveland, Ohio, handled booth design and construction for both the iGm/FW and GlassBuild America TruSeal booths.

Join in the Glassex Silver Jubilee Celebrations: 25 Years of Continuous Service

Veterans of the UK glass and glazing industry will be continually reminded of their long service over the next twelve months as the organisers of Glassex launch a programme of celebrations for the Silver Anniversary of the event. That’s right, in case you haven’t been counting, Glassex, the annual centre stage of the industry, is approaching its 25th consecutive year!

Halls 18, 19 and 20 of the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) will be the venue for the birthday party of 2005, which takes place from 13th to 16th March and the organisers are promising to make it something special. A series of additional features are being discussed, to supplement the Conservatory Design Competition and Glassex Challenge, which were introduced for the first time this year to great acclaim, and which will be expanded for 2005. Strong Silver Anniversary branding will ensure that everyone realises the importance of Glassex ’05, as the event has been a key part of the growth of the window, door and conservatory industry through most of its history.

Steve Redman, Event Manager for Glassex believes the Silver Anniversary of Glassex is as much a milestone for the industry: ‘Glassex virtually traces the development of the window, door and conservatory industry over the last 25 years, presenting an annual, physical reminder of the evolution of products, methods and indeed people. The industry has been through many, many changes and these are very much evident at every Glassex. Glassex 2005 should therefore be a celebration for the industry, not just of its main showcase.’

UAP Headed for Cologne Rather Than the NEC

Hardware importer and distributor UAP decided to head for the Hardware Fair (EisenWarenMesse) in Cologne and not Glassex this year to exhibit the company's products in a move that UAP says proved to be a great success.

David Clegg, Sales Director of UAP explains, 'UAP decided to exhibit again this year after a few years away from the limelight during a period of considerable expansion. We decided to go to Cologne because of its international connections rather than the NEC, and this decision worked very well for us.

'We had enquiries for our products from all over the World, including Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Syria and most EEC countries. Many of the enquiries were from the larger importers in these countries and our follow up should result in strong export sales growth.

'Our letterplates and Euro cylinders were of particular interest and we are hoping to see a heavy demand for these items over the coming months.'

'Success Beyond all Expectations' for Saiedue Living 2004

The organisers claim 'success beyond all expectations' for the twenty-third edition of Saiedue Living, the International Architecture, Interior Finishings, Recovery and Building Technologies Exhibitions held at the Bologna Exhibition Centre from the 17th to 21st March.

'The growing trend of the number of visitors, recorded from the opening of the event, was confirmed by the data registered day after day, and on closure resulted in a success that was beyond all expectations given the current international economic situation. The absolute figures recorded were excellent, with a turn-out of 122,116 visitors of whom 8,944 came from abroad. This was a surprising improvement on the 2003 figures, making for a 3.65% increase, and that is all the more impressive when compared to the 2002 edition, which was more similar with regards to the product categories present: the increase is of 8.94% on the total number of visitors, which rises to 11.37% if we consider the number of foreign visitors.' say the organisers.

'The growing international importance of Saiedue Living – organised by Federlegno-Arredo in association with Edilegno, UNCSAAL and BolognaFiere with the operative guidance of O.N. Organizzazione Nike – is further highlighted, in addition to the enthusiastic comments by members of the delegations of French, Belgian, Spanish, German and English journalists hosted in association with the ICE – most stated that they could not find rivals with regards to the exhibition layout of other European Trade Fairs or the creativity and technologically advanced solutions presented by Italian industry! -, by some important events hosted by the event. One prestigious recognition for Italy came with the nomination of Libero Ravaioli as Chairman of the European Association Windoor at Saiedue Living by the Chairmen of the European Frames Associations FAECF (metal), FEMIB (wood) and EPW (plastic). Another particularly important development because of the possible repercussions on the sector was the decision that emerged from the meeting of Federlegno-Arredo’s Directive Committee to launch a project promoting Italian Design and Products in Eastern European countries and China.

'With 19 exhibition halls and 3 outdoor areas, all entirely occupied, 145,534 square metres of exhibition surface, 1,467 leading Italian and foreign firms, and a programme boasting more than 70 events, Saiedue Living 2004 once again confirmed its position as Europe’s leading sector event.

'Much of the success can be attributed to the commitment of the exhibitors who with regards to frames, doors, windows, stairs, floorings, automatic devices, accessories, paints and products for building renewal presented new products characterised by highly-evolved technology and cutting-edge design as well as many top level special initiatives.

'Officially opened by the Chairman of the ICE (Institute of Foreign Trade) Prof. Beniamino Quintieri, this edition of the exhibition explored the frontiers of avant garde architecture with special initiatives focusing on specific sectors, thus energetically enhancing the message of Saiedue Living to the entire design and architecture world. The response was outstanding: as we await more detailed turnout statistics, many exhibiting companies have already expressed their satisfaction on the significant increase in contacts with architects and specifiers.

'With the In Contract show and the co-operation of four of the biggest names in contemporary design, Saiedue Living tackled the theme of architecture in public areas. Designers Pierluigi Cerri, Piero Lissoni, Simone Micheli and Claudio Silvestrin contributed with four concepts constructed inside the Services Centre of the Bologna Exhibition Centre. In the total essential white metaphysical environment designed by Micheli, amidst glimmering lights and moving sounds, a large crowd was presented with tomorrow's Wellness Centre, Showroom, Hotel and Office. The prototypes designed by architects and the multi-sensorial installations set up by the twenty-two partner companies caught the attention of visitors and media alike.

'Innovative floorings were the stars of the 100% Calpestabile show by Studio Original Designers 6R5 in partnership with Mapei and formed the destination for an endless and devoted pilgrimage of trade professionals in search of new flooring solutions. A revolutionary catalogue of digital, liquid, backlit and three-dimensional, raised and soundproof floorings occupied more than 3,000 square metres of exhibition hall 35 in order to propose to architects, designers, planners and engineers new creative opportunities. The show's suggestive set-up was a hit with both exhibitors and visitors. Darkness accompanied Saiedue Living visitors over sand dunes and suspended bridges in its journey through the 100 suggestive interpretations of the floorings theme. Three large areas were dedicated to Nature, with the presence of historical and modern materials, to Technology, with digital or liquid floorings, and to Origins, which told the story of the most interesting materials from Venetian-style flooring to marble, from mosaics to wood. And then the slabs of titanium with underlit crystal, leds with real leather, wood, carpet, laminates with digital prints, resilient floorings, resins, cements, natural stones, glass, porphyries and steel.

'The primary themes of the 2004 edition – in addition to contracting, external paving and innovative material, gathered together in the I.A.M EXPO show staged in conjunction with Material Connexion – included home and building safety and security. Within the framework of Securbuilding, the exhibition of safety and security, domotics and smart systems for the home and office, a great deal of interest was stirred by the thematic area organised by Saiedue Living in conjunction with Assosicurezza and dedicated to the applications of electronic systems configured for homes, shops, airports and public squares and controlled by a central operating unit. Great public interest was attracted by the burglar resistance tests organised in conjunction with Federlegno-Arredo, Uncsaal, Fiera di Bologna, UCT, Reed Business and Istituto Giordano: a packed testing schedule was performed inside two specially built glazed cubicles, where break-in attempt simulations were performed on armoured doors and windows.

'There was also quite a stir in the nearby Focus Posa In Opera area where technicians and fitters from leading door and window manufacturers performed direct frame installations.

'There was an exceptional turnout in exhibition halls 19–20 where Decor & Color Show proved once again that it is Italy's only event for the decoration world. The steady flow of trade professionals and businesses was continuously accompanied not only by the thousands of visitors present in the trade fair centre, but also the dozens of coaches full of decorators arriving directly at the entrance to the Decor & Color Show.

'There was standing room only at the conferences and meetings arranged within the framework of the Naturpolis exhibition (ecological and ecologically upgrading products for the building trade) that explored themes such as biological quality, energy efficiency and the acoustic comfort of buildings. Outstanding results were enjoyed by the 2004 edition of Sunweek, the renewable energy exhibition, where the number of visitors was up 100% on last year's event.

'The next edition of Saiedue Living has already been scheduled for the 16th – 20th March 2005, when, with SATES, it will reclaim its post as leading event of the building envelope and dedicated products and services sector.'

OmniDecor Premieres 'Home-Glass, new ideas for flat glass' at Fuori Salone 2004, Milan

OmniDecor Spa is an international group with headquarters in Erba, Como, Italy and a leading manufacturer of satined glass. Once again, this year the company will be participating in the events taking place during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Milan. OmniDecor Spa is organising a special event, 'Home-Glass, new ideas for flat glass', which will take place in the exhibition hall of Fuori Salone at Palazzo Giureconsulti (piazza Mercanti 2, piazza Duomo), Milan from 14th to 19th April 2004. Fuori Salone is open from 11 am to 9 pm and on the Opening Day Thursday 15th April from 11 am to 10 pm.

OmniDecor will be exhibiting its entire product range at Home-Glass - DecorFlou, DecorGem, DecorOpal and DecorIdea. These products are used by architects, interior designers and furnishing specialists for a wide variety of applications. Float glass sheeting makes a discreet, elegant partition wall and room divider. It is widely used in the furniture industry and for interior furnishings and decoration. At Home-Glass the company will also be presenting exclusive new furnishing solutions for the bathroom, kitchen and living room.

These are all made from OmniDecor float glass to original designs by Riccardo Giovanetti, Marc Krusin and Lorenzo Damiani, and provide proof of just how practical and elegant float glass can be as an architectural and interior design material. The designs also demonstrate the company’s commitment to close collaboration with designers and architects.

Three new solutions for glass in the home. The 'Healthroom' designed by Riccardo Giovanetti is a space dedicated to personal health and well-being. It is designed to concentrate all the main functions to do with water at the centre of the room. Flat glass sheets divide up the space inside the room into semi-transparent containers giving an overall effect of lightness even to the most voluminous structures. This is a dynamic space, designed to change its layout and appearance with just a few simple movements. A multi-functional area dedicated to personal care, reflection and meditation. The 'Livingroom' designed by Marc Krusin is a space which contrasts modern glass with the memory of things past. The space has an English feel about it with a series of areas dedicated to different functions. Flat glass has made it possible to design a space which is both positive and negative at the same time and where separate, open spaces have been created without barriers. The 'Foodroom' designed by Lorenzo Damiani takes flat glass into those areas of the home dedicated to preparing food, cooking and eating. The design experiments with a new way of constructing and furnishing the dining area and the kitchen. Glass sheets replace the conventional materials and create a special effect of brightness and light. Glass is used to screen off service areas and create a play of light based on subtle reflections and a variety of surface finishes.

During the six days of Home-Glass, OmniDecor will be welcoming designers, architects, journalists and furnishing specialists to the comfortable, relaxing atmosphere of the Cocktail Zone where the company will be showcasing new float glass solutions, ideas, products, projects and designs.

For the first time this congress, which has so far taken place outside the exhibition halls in the adjacent congress centre, will be held right in the middle of the action at BAU 2005. High-ranking experts from all over Europe will be coming together at this congress to discuss topical themes on the subject of innovative architecture with glass. The lectures will be given in German or English, with simultaneous translation.

Opening ceremony at the GlasKon forum

The opening ceremony of BAU 2005 will also be held at the congress forum in Hall C1. Following the official opening, VIP guests from politics and the construction industry will then tour the exhibition halls.

What the exhibitors say about the new 'Visions of glass'

Erich Trösch, President of the Board of GLAS TRÖSCH AG:
'For GLAS TRÖSCH BAU 2005 in Munich is a key event in the Euroepan glass market. GLAS TRÖSCH will be presenting its innovative new developments of high-quality multi-function glass, plus the latest security and fire glass. We will be paying special attention to our advice services to architects, façade planners and processors. 'Visions of Glass' offers an ideal communication platform for underlining the strengths and capabilities of the GLAS TRÖSCH GROUP in face-to-face talks.'

Bernd Kramer, Chairman of INTERPANE GLAS INDUSTRIE AG:
'INTERPANE welcomes the fact that the innovative material of glass will now have its own exhibition hall at the Munich trade fair. The architectural design possibilities of glass, combined with practically all possible functions of building physics, have turned high-quality glass products into the material of the 21st century. INTERPANE will be taking a prominent position to display our high-tech functional glass products at BAU 2005, in particular in the area of solar glass and thermally insulating glass.'

Dr Klaus Huntebrinker, Managing Director of ISOLAR-Glas-Beratung GmbH:
'Glass and glass products are key functional and design elements in modern architecture. BAU in Munich has a firm place in the planning of the ISOLAR group and most of the other leading suppliers of glass and glass products at BAU. We are very happy that BAU 2005 will be showcasing glass in the display on 'Visions of Glass', and thus giving it the recognition it deserves. ISOLAR is looking forward to presenting itself and its products to visitors at BAU 2005 on the 'glass boulevard'.'

Carl-Robert Kümpers, Managing Director of OKALUX GmbH:
'Since 1976 OKALUX has regularly and successfully exhibited its unusual palette of products in the field of special insulating glass for architectural applications. Despite the continuing downturn in the building sector in Germany, BAU is still the first choice for OKALUX. No other fair attracts similar numbers of architects. OKALUX welcomes the idea of concentrating the glass manufacturers in one hall, and above all we welcome the inclusion of the added attraction of the 'Visions of Glass' display into the concept for glass.'

Stefanie Ebbers, Marketing Communication on Fire-Resistant Glass, Pilkington Deutschland AG:
'For us BAU is one of the most important construction fairs in Europe. With the setting up of a separate exhibition hall for the material glass, we, as global producers of standard and fire-resistant glass, will have greater opportunity to show visitors from our target groups the many and varied applications for this material. This will be further helped by the proximity of the glass hall to the stands of partner companies supplying partition walls, doors, windows, façades and roofs. Visitors will thus be able to gather the full picture of solutions for the spectrum of architectural applications in glass.'

Udo Brandt, Managing Director of SAINT-GOBAIN Deutsche Glas GmbH:
'BAU is the most important fair for the building and construction materials sector. And so, it is a logical step to highlight the up-and-coming material glass. Glass is a modern material, which gives tremendous scope for architectural design. Architects and planners are now fully embracing the possibilities of this transparent material, in order to turn their visions into reality. The glass industry is the partner of the architects, planners and all others involved in glass in architecture. For SAINT-GOBAIN Deutsche Glas partnership and proximity are part of our basic philosophy, and at trade fairs we are able to promote both in talks with our customers.'

Dominique Wengler, Marketing Manager Special Flat Glass, SCHOTT Spezialglas GmbH:
'BAU 2003 was a tremendous success for SCHOTT. At no other leading fair in the construction sector did we find so many high-quality visitors from our target group. Now that the fair is devoting a separate section to 'our' material of glass, this is a positive sign in the current downturn, and it gives us hope that BAU 2005 will be as much of a success for us as the 2003 event. We firmly believe that glass will be the innovative material of the future, and initiatives like 'Visions of Glass' help to further this.'

BAU is the leading trade fair for building and construction materials used in industrial, commercial and residential building, and it is also the most important sector event in the European building and construction materials sector. BAU presents a unique display of all types of building materials, and is a regular forum for all the market leaders in the European construction industry. Some 1,850 exhibitors from 40 countries are expected to take part in BAU 2005, which takes place from 17th to 22nd January 2005 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. Focus themes at BAU 2005 are: Intelligent building envelopes, energy-efficient construction, building security/fire protection, brownfield sites.

The scheme is to be run for the first time at the 50th Interbuild, the construction industry's premier trade event, which is due to take place at the NEC in Birmingham from April 25th to 29th.

Said Chairman of the award judges and Chief Executive of the Construction Products Association Michael Ankers: 'Innovation is the life blood of the construction products industry and with Interbuild regarded by many manufacturers as the place to unveil new ideas, it seemed a natural progression to introduce an award scheme.

'I am delighted that the Exhibitors have embraced the idea so enthusiastically. To have attracted such a large number of entries for a new award is an outstanding achievement.'

Interbuild Event Director Steve Webb added: 'More than 200 new products were launched at the 2002 show - many of which are now firmly established in the marketplace.

'We are expecting just as many to enter and the quality to be just as high this time around so the fact that half of them are competing for our new awards is yet another indication that Interbuild 2004 will be a show to remember.'

Mr Ankers will head up a prestigious panel of judges who will decide on the awards and these will be presented at an exclusive black-tie event in the Monarch Suite of the Birmingham Metropole Hotel on Monday April 26th.

GP&T: 2005 Dates Announced

Following one of the most successful business-to-business event launches in recent years, dates have been announced for the next Glass Processing & Technology (GP&T). Once again to take place in Hall 1 of the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Birmingham, GP&T will be held from Tuesday 17th to Thursday 19th May 2005 inclusive.

The move from the November dates during which the 2003 launch event was held follows guidance by the organising committee for GP&T, which comprises senior representatives from all sides of the glass industry. During extensive consultation, which considered the trading requirements and patterns of the glass industry, the May dates were agreed as being ideal for the next event.

The organisers, EMAP Maclaren, have also indicated that a similar format will be followed, with an exhibition, extensive seminar programmes, and a number of demonstrations and features, such as the highly successful Central Bar meeting area.

A successful second outing for GP&T seems assured of improving on the success of the first, with advance stand sales already exceeding the healthy figure reached for 2003. ‘GP&T exceeded even the most optimistic expectations of its supporters, and we already have some ambitious plans for 2005,’ said Steve Redman, Event Manager.

Dates for Glasstec 2004 Announced

The dates for glasstec 2004, the global trade fair covering every aspect of the glass industry, have been announced by organiser Messe Düsseldorf. The giant trade fair, which in 2002 attracted 54,500 international visitors, will run from 9th to 13th November 2004.

The last glasstec in 2002 saw record results: 1,143 exhibitors from 42 countries filled halls 9 - 17, occupying a net exhibition area of 64,311 sq m.

Despite difficult economic times, the positive results of exhibitor and visitor surveys in all areas indicate that the glass industry is defying the slump. New glass machinery and plant – also in the crafts industry sectors – operate more efficiently and ecologically than ever before.

18th Glasstec Will Show Laser and Display Technology for First Time at 2004 Fair

In its position as a leading international trade fair, glasstec says it must always cater for the needs of the industry as a whole, including recognising and picking up on current developments from the marketplace.

There will therefore be an extended range of exhibits at the next glasstec, held in Düsseldorf from 9th – 13th November 2004. Under the exhibiting category of Flat Glass, display technology and the full range of laser technology for glass processing and flat displays will be presented to visitors for the first time.

The latest developments from the fields of separation, marking, removal and melting will be presented. By using lasers in the glass industry, production can be increased, manufacturing steps dispensed with, rejects reduced and the quality of the final product improved.

Take the separation of glass as an example. The laser draws the contour in the glass, the glass separates and optimum quality is achieved on the edges. During this process the laser works at a high speed. It is also possible to remove thin layers from the glass substrate selectively without causing the slightest damage and at a high speed. Lasers can also melt three-dimensional images into glass blocks or bore into glass.

Products, machinery, equipment and components will be demonstrated under the heading ‘Laser Future for the Glass Industry’.

The sectors in which refined special-purpose glass is used are also becoming more and more differentiated. Display glass represents an important group within the special-purpose glass segment, and is used, for example, as a base material for liquid crystal displays.

The most obvious example of display glass is a computer screen. It is therefore hardly surprising that the total flat glass industry worldwide is one of the industries with the highest growth rates. An average annual growth rate of 20% is being forecast within the next few years. Europe and North America are the largest and most important end user markets for display glass. At glasstec 2004, leading international manufacturers will be presenting the latest trends from R&D relating to refined special-purpose glass for display manufacture.

International industry representatives and scientists will also present information about current developments, processes and products within both industries in two accompanying trade symposiums. (Additional information will become available on these at a later date). Both subjects will also be displayed within the scope of the special ‘glass technology live’ show.

Clement plans to 'Steel the Show' at Batimat 2003

For more than 40 years now, Batimat has showcased advances in the building and construction industry. Batimat 2003 will be held in Paris over six days between 3-8th Nov 2003 and expects to attract over half a million visitors from some 130 countries across the globe. The Clement Windows Group Ltd, of Haslemere, Surrey, will be representing the UK's steel window industry and will be joined by some 2,500 other companies at what has become the world's largest building & construction exhibition.

Clement Windows will be pitching against some of the world's leading companies and brands with its new EB24 product. EB24 is a slender replacement domestic steel window and has been developed to reduce thermal insulation performance to meet new Part L legislation. The new EB24 range will significantly reduce U Values from 3.3 W/m2K to 2.1 W/m2K by using new developments in glass and frame technology. Incorporating this new high performance unit does not alter the slim and elegant sight lines already offered by EB steel windows and therefore allows maximum solar gain.

Clements will also be displaying its 19th Century original Cast rooflight product, which has proved to be popular in many Grade 2 listed and historically important buildings in the UK. Clements believes that the Cast rooflight, which is frequently specified by UK architects, will also be a valuable resource for the French housing market, providing a real alternative to the existing Velux rooflight systems.

As members of the Steel Windows Association (SWA), Clements will also be on hand to offer professional, impartial advice and information.

Therma-Tru® Lock into Fullex

'Designed and manufactured with quality components and premium features throughout.’ That’s how Therma-Tru® describes the company’s products and why visitors to Batimat Paris, in November 2003, will find Fullex high security door locks amongst the displays on the Therma-Tru® stand.

Offering resistance to forced entry, Therma-Tru® fibreglass doors are reinforced in the lock bearing area to make locksets and deadbolts even more secure. ‘Combined with a Fullex high security locking system, this makes Therma-Tru® an incredibly tough, dependable door system’, explains Greg Moore, international technical manager for Therma-Tru®.

Visitors to Batimat will get the chance to examine the features and benefits of the Therma-Tru® Smooth-Star® and Classic-Craft® ranges. In addition they will be able to see at first hand the Fullex Gemini, integrated double door locking system, which has recently been launched.

This locking system, designed specifically for use with composite and timber doors, utilises the Fullex SL-16 multi-bolt on the master door. With a comprehensive selection of compression and hook bolt combinations, centre dead bolt, latch and night latch facility, the SL-16 offers a wide range of options to suit all door materials, styles and applications.

But what makes Gemini innovative is the slave door set, complete with centre case mechanism and top and bottom shoot bolts. The integrated system prevents operation of the master lock before the slave lock engagement is complete to ensure that the lock is always fully resolute. In addition, the master lock operation deadlocks the slave lock, with the key locking master door cylinder deadlocking the system. Keeps are customised to the outer frame to provide a 25mm bolt entry for a truly secure fit.

Designed for use on timber and composite double door sets, the Gemini locking system is designed complete with an unobtrusive aluminium door nose, which eradicates the need for a double rebate or additional dog bolts, whilst providing maximum security, ease of manufacture and simple installation.

This makes the double door lock ideal for Therma-Tru®’s fiberglass product, with its energy efficient, solid polyurethane foam core. ‘We’ve built up a close working relationship with Fullex Locks Limited over the last few years’ continues Greg. ‘The fact that they don’t just manufacture door locks, but actively develop locking systems to meet specific requirements, helps Therma-Tru® to provide added value to our distributors across the UK, Ireland and Europe.’

Fully tested to comply with PAS 23 and 24, the SL-16 and Gemini systems combine quality, durable materials, with a customised service that provides added value for door manufacturers, fabricators and installers across all sectors of the market.

Interbuild Helps to Shape the Future

A seachange is taking place in UK construction practices with more and more clients and industry decision takers recognising the business benefits of off-site construction methods.

In recognition, Interbuild has teamed up with Manufacturing The Future to ensure that the theme of off-site and modern construction methods is a prominent feature of Interbuild.

Interbuild 2004 takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from April 25 to 29.

An 'Off-Site Village' will be established as a dedicated area for the display and promotion of the very best in components, assemblies, framing systems and modular units.

In addition there will be an outside area for the display of larger constructions and to demonstrate site-based construction processes.

There will also be a programme of themed workshops and networking opportunities to attract and inform key industry clients, decision takers and the media.

Increasingly, clients, consultants and contractors are aware of the significant benefits in terms of predictability, cost control and quality to be gained by optimising the use of off-site manufactured components, systems and modules within their construction projects.

The Government, as the industry's single most important client, is showing the way through its support for the use of off-site methods to deliver quality solutions for social housing, school building, health facilities, infrastructure and the drive for sustainable communities.

The off-site 'village' at Interbuild is a collaboration with Rethinking Construction and Mtech Group, the leading UK consultancy for off-site construction.
Alan Crane, Chairman of Rethinking Construction said: 'We are very excited about this collaboration.

'Interbuild provides the ideal forum to showcase innovative products and cutting edge technology to clients, contractors, architects and designers from throughout the supply chain.'

Christopher Newton, Interbuild's Managing Director, added: 'This initiative demonstrates how Interbuild is embracing the future.

Glaverbel at Glasstech Asia Pacific 2003

From 8th till 10th October, Glaverbel Asia-Pacific will take part in Glasstech Asia 2003, the definitive industry event in the region for glass targeted at building professionals and featuring the latest glass constructive approaches to technical knowledge and creative solutions.

Glaverbel will focus on three themes at the show: solar-control coated glass, glass design trends for interiors and MyGlaverbel.com, a new online service.

World leader in coated glass
'Nearly 40 years of research and pioneering experimentation underpin Glaverbel's leadership in coated glass. Glaverbel has always set itself demanding R&D goals in order to produce the very best coated glazing. Evidence of this can be seen in its range of coated glass products that will be exhibited at Glasstech Asia, currently the broadest choice of architectural solutions available on the market.' says the company.

'It was our global leadership in solar-control pyrolitic coatings (hard coatings) that led to the development of Sunergy, a revolutionary glass range that combines solar control with thermal insulation. It can be laminated, toughened, curved, enamelled and skilscreen printed giving architects limitless creativity.'

Amongst its soft coatings (applied to the cold glass offline using a magnetic vacuum sputtering process), Glaverbel will be presenting Stopray Galaxy, a highly selective double-glazing with a subtle balance of thermal insulation and solar control. Summer and winter alike, this newcomer provides tailor-made protection against both heat and cold. Moreover, Stopray Galaxy offers a neutral appearance and low light reflection, two qualities that make Stopray Galaxy a good choice for all refurbishment and new build projects.

Suited to all surfaces, Glaverbel sets out its glass design trends
As decorative elements, glass surfaces enhance living room and kitchen furniture, tabletops and sliding doors, main shelves and bathroom shelves, wall fittings and partition walls. Visitors to Glasstech Asia will have the opportunity to discover these kind of applications on the Glaverbel’ stand through the Lacobel range, particularly well suited to current design trends. Lacobel is a glass varnished on one side with a high-quality paint available in 15 colours. Such applications can also be viewed on Glaverbel’s website MyGlaverbel.com.

'MyGlaverbel.com': an interactive encyclopaedia of Glaverbel products
With MyGlaverbel.com, recently launched, Glaverbel is offering a new approach and vision of its world of glass for use in architectural and decorative applications. 'MyGlaverbel.com' provides general information on glass and gives a full description of Glaverbel products as well as performance figures. The site is easy to navigate and products are organised by brand, application, function and types of glass. The site also features hundreds of photographs of projects from around the world using Glaverbel products, in order to illustrate their many applications.

Glaverbel, a worldwide reputation based on quality and progress
Located in Singapore, Glaverbel Asia-Pacific is part of the worldwide network of the Glaverbel Group. With its 15 float plants and around 150 production units, the Glaverbel Group is the European branch of the Flat Glass Company, covering all the flat glass activities of Asahi Glass, the world’s largest glassmaking group. The Glaverbel Group (incl. Automotive) employs about 16,000 people and its sales amount to 1.9 billion EUR.

At Glasstech Asia, Glaverbel Asia-Pacific will be present through its two sister companies, Glavermas and Glavermas Mirror. Glavermas is the sales and marketing organisation for coated solar control glazing while Glavermas Mirror is established to expand the full range of interior decorative products as the new ecological mirrors of the company.

First Specialised Building Trade Fair in the Middle East

'FRONT 2004', the first trade fair specialising in building covers in the Middle East, will open its doors from 14 to 17 March 2004. This event, which includes the key topics of doors, windows, roofs and walls, is being organised jointly by Durma Messe lnternational - a wholly-owned subsidiary of Messe Stuttgart responsible for foreign trade fairs and exhibitions - and the new Sharjah Exhibition Centre in the United Arab Emirates. The promotional supporters of the trade fair are two German associations: the Federal Association for Roller Shutters and Sun Protection in Bonn and the National Federation of Door and Gate Manufacturers (BVT). Both these associations also act as promotional supporters of R + T, lnternational Trade Fair for Roller Shutters, Doors/Gates and Sun Protection, which is held every three years in Stuttgart.

'FRONT', the youngest baby of Durma MSI, is likely to be a success: the construction market in the Middle East is expanding rapidly - between 2001 and 2002, turnover in the construction industry rose from $45 billion to $50.2 billion - and therefore offers an ideal platform for a trade fair such as 'FRONT'. Although large construction trade fairs are held in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, the region still does not have any specialised events at which visitors can obtain specific information on new developments of interest to them. 'FRONT 2004' is aiming to close this gap. The example of R + T, which is held every three years, shows how successful a specialised trade fair can be.

Whereas general construction trade fairs in Germany are battling against declining visitor numbers, around 4% more visitors actually attended R + T 2003. 53,156 visitors came to Stuttgart between 18 and 22 February 2003 in order to obtain information on innovations relating to roller and folding shutters, doors, gates and sun protection systems - products and systems which will also play an important role at 'FRONT 2004' in Sharjah. Eckhardt Schlecht, Managing Director of Durma, is convinced: 'FRONT 2004' will be held in the right place at the right time.'

Hirex Finds its Natural Home at Interbuild

The UK's biggest and best attended biennial building and construction exhibition will host Hirex, the plant and tool hire show, alongside its traditional plant and tools exhibition area at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from April 25-29, 2004.

Said Interbuild Event Director Steve Webb: 'Having Hirex on board with us is fantastic news and will give visitors to the structural areas and plant and tools sectors even more reason to come to the show in April.

'Hirex at Interbuild will bring together hire companies, suppliers and end users for the first time, creating an exciting environment for all parties to interact and do business.

'Hirex really has found its natural home and the hire industry can look forward to an exciting event which will generate great business.

'It has traditionally attracted big names and decision makers from the hire industry. Add to this the 6,940 visitors interested in plant and on site equipment who came to Interbuild 2002 - and 10,630 interested in power, hand tools and measuring equipment - and you have a powerful reason to exhibit and visit.'

Hirex at Interbuild will benefit from its own dedicated marketing programme as well as the overall Interbuild campaign.

Delivering the Future at Interbuild 2004

Innovations set to have a major impact throughout the building and construction industry will be given pride of place at Interbuild 2004.

New Product Zones are being introduced in four dedicated areas of the exhibition, which takes place at the NEC from April 25-29, and each of the items featured will be automatically entered for a new product award.

There will be seven categories which are: Best Lighting & Electrical Product, Best Interior Product, Best Exterior Product, Best On-Site Product, Energy Efficiency Award, Disability Access Award and Best Overall Product.

Said Steve Webb, Event Director for Interbuild: 'More than 200 new products were launched at Interbuild 2002 and the feeling was that they were not promoted as well as they might have been during the build-up to the show.

'Interbuild has always been regarded within the industry as the perfect place to introduce new ideas and we feel it is only right and proper to give them a greater profile.

'That's why we have devised a scheme to promote the new products before and during the event - including an Awards Dinner on Monday April 28th at the Birmingham Metropole at which the best will be officially recognised.'

The closing date for entries to the Awards scheme is Friday November 28th and a distinguished panel of independent judges will meet in January to draw up a short-list of contenders.

New Product Awards is not the only awards scheme being promoted at that time because the winners of the 'Master Builder of the Year' scheme, run by the Federation of Master Builders, will also be unveiled during Interbuild.

Added Mr Webb: 'We are delighted that FMB has chosen to present its flagship event within Interbuild and to have two major ceremonies at the event reinforces the reputation of Interbuild as the industy's major show.'

fensterbau/frontale 2004: Meeting-place Nürnberg

The international trade fairs fensterbau/frontale and Holz-Handwerk take place again together at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from Wednesday to Saturday, 31 March to 3 April 2004. The last trade fair combination in 2002 recorded almost 87,000 trade visitors and some 1,350 exhibitors on a net display area of 80,000 m2.

'The persistent crisis in the building sector in Germany is giving many companies a hard time', says Claus Rättich, Director of Exhibition Management (Own Events) at NürnbergMesse. 'Nevertheless, innovative power and efficiency continue uninterrupted. fensterbau/frontale will again be the central meeting-place for windows and facades in Europe in 2004. The trade fair is located extremely conveniently – the exhibitors in Nürnberg are at the centre of the market. This especially applies to the proximity to the aspiring countries in Central Eastern Europe, including many of the new EU accession countries.'

fensterbau/frontale offers everything for technologies, components and prefabricated units, all the frame materials including metal/aluminium, innovations in glass, shading and facades, plus information and services for related themes. The trade fair is also intended to generate impulses for lobbying and image development in politics and society through a targeted approach to the relevant groups.

Modern windows and facades: Technology for a sense of well-being
fensterbau/frontale 2004 goes to the start with a completely revised graphical concept. The new key visual on brochures and posters emphasises the function of windows for well-being. Cosily settling back into the sofa and enjoying the view, whatever the weather is like outside: whether rain or sunshine, hot or cold, the right window ensures a good climate inside – modern window technology is the answer.

The new key visual for fensterbau/frontale makes it possible to intuitively and emotionally grasp the advantages of innovative window and facade technology as presented at the trade fair in Nürnberg. The window, often underrated in terms of its complexity and functionality, is not only an important design element in architecture, but also an elementary part of our quality of life.

The window provides protection against the rigours of the weather and unauthorised entry, but at the same time opens up the room to the outside and offers a view into the distance. With clever ideas and surprising detail solutions, the interaction of the various materials in the course of time has developed the glazed hole in the wall into a high-tech system that meets maximum requirements with minimum cost.

Interbuild Forges Deal with Ironmongers

The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers is the latest big name construction industry body to throw its full backing behind Interbuild 2004.

The move demonstrates that the Guild has singled out Interbuild - the UK's premier construction exhibition - as the most important one around and will be advising its members to support and exhibit at the show.

Director of the Guild Peter Spill said: 'Interbuild has been a major feature on the construction industry calendar for a good many years and we think it presents an ideal opportunity for our members to showcase their products and services.

'We are happy to endorse the show as we believe it is of great benefit to our members, further enhances the status of the architectural ironmongery industry and allows us to impart useful knowledge and advice to the thousands of visitors who attend.'

Since it was established in 1961, the Guild's standing in the industry has grown enormously and Interbuild Managing Director Christopher Newton was thrilled to receive its support.

He said: 'We feel it is crucial to work as closely as possible with organisations that represent members of the construction industry in order to keep our finger on the pulse and continue to deliver events that answer the needs of exhibitors and visitors alike.

'The Guild is a highly influential body in the trade and we are naturally delighted to be able to mention its reputable name amongst our backers.'

Interbuild 2004 will take place at the NEC in Birmingham on April 25 - 29.
