Bumper Crop of Leads for Orchard

The 2004 Ideal Homes Exhibition held at Bournemouth International Centre in early September was the second year that Dorset based installer Orchard Roofing has exhibited the benefits of SRA, the PVC single ply membrane flat roofing system, at this leading home improvement show.

Kenny Pinfield-Wells, owner of Orchard, explains why: ‘Shows work well for us. We use the SRA stand with the magic tap – the well known attention grabber. We also display photos of finished roofs. We can talk to our potential customers about the long-term benefits of this type of roofing materials compared with older types like felt. The BBA approval for a life expectancy in excess of 30 years goes down really well. From the 30 leads, we have already made six sales and there are five more in the pipeline.’

Tony Poole, Business Development Manager for SRA, adds: ‘We are always happy to help with shows. SRA has the professional stand and display board that can be borrowed by the Registered Installers. Proactive companies like Orchard get great results from shows.’

Charity Jackpot for Unitec

Now in its 10th year, one of the industry’s premier sporting events, the Unitec Hardware Ltd Charity Golf Challenge, was held once again at the De Vere Carden Park in Cheshire. This year the invitational golf day raised a magnificent £8500 for the Down’s Syndrome Children’s Charity.

In scenes reminiscent of 2003, Phil Moulds, MD of Unitec, lead a Le Mans style start as over fifty golf buggies jockeyed for position, ready to negotiate a shotgun start on the famous Nicklaus course.

In glorious autumn sunshine the auspicious gathering of over 120 major industry names, together with representatives from the leading trade publications, had every opportunity to display their finely tuned golfing skills to the maximum effect. While no one managed to take the main hole-in-one prize of a holiday for two in Hawaii, the returning players unanimously agreed that they had all enjoyed the challenge of this deceptively tough championship course. Taking the team honours at the end of the day were, in first place D.W Associates, second prize went to Window Industries and third best score Keyframe Ltd.

The day was rounded off with a gala dinner, followed by a charity auction which included a stand at the 2005 Glassex exhibition donated by EMAP and advertising pages donated by Window Industries and Fenestra. Top after dinner entertainer Lee Wilson rounded off the evening with a barrage of stories and jokes.

Eurocell’s stand was of particular interest to the visitors. ‘The stand was designed to reflect the highly approachable nature of Eurocell Building Plastics. We hoped to give visitors an insight into the company and the way we operate, not only from our Irish HQ in Sligo, but also from our other depot in Dublin and Conservatory factory in Colooney.’ said Will Gallagher of Eurocell Building Plastics.

Pilkington Building Products Takes Centre Stage at PlanExpo

Few building materials possess the flexibility, versatility and enduring allure of glass. It serves many functions and plays an ever-increasing role in the overall consideration of design. To support this interest, Pilkington Building Products showcased its wide range of glass options at the 23rd annual PlanExpo, 4th - 6th November 2004 at Simmonscourt Pavilion at the RDS in Dublin.

Experts from the company will be on hand at stands G3/G4 to offer advice and guidance on a full range of glass related opportunities and products. Grenzebach Maschinenbau GmbH Successful at China Glass 2004

Grenzebach was one of the members of the German Industry Group at China Glass 2004 resulting in many valuable contacts with delegations from the Asian glass industry. Increasingly, this exhibition is attracting not only glass producers and other technical experts from China, but also visitors from all over Asia.

With its largest stand at an Asian exhibition to date, Grenzebach presented its technology to an interested public and welcomed high rank representatives of the glass industry. An important event for the Grenzebach team both from the parent company in Germany and from its Shanghai affiliate was the signing of a contract with the Chinese company Beifang Glass. Beifang ordered the entire line control and components for the Cold End of a thick glass production line worth several million Euros. The signing of this contract marked a continuance of Grenzebach's consistent success in the Chinese market over recent months.

One afternoon the Grenzebach team invited visitors to enjoy Bavarian pretzels, sausages, meat loaf and Bavarian beer, giving the stand a Bavarian beer garden atmosphere.

GMD-Giardina Enjoys ‘Remarkable’ Woodmex

Finishing specialist GMD-Giardina came away from Woodmex in buoyant mood following what MD, Gerry Doran described as a ‘remarkable’ show.

‘We were there to discuss with customers the latest trends in finishing application and curing techniques. It was the joinery sector in particular that we found showing the most interest as demand for their products are markedly on the increase’
explains Gerry Doran. Italian principals Giardina are at the cutting edge of this specialisation and Gerry Doran is currently involved in installing some of the most modern finishing systems into major joinery factories finishing window frames and doors in particular.

Various solutions are available from GMD including all the pre-finishing and in-line surface preparation delivered by the company’s other principal, Tagliabue, which specialises in wide belt sanding for finishing applications.

More and more interest is being shown in one particular aspect of curing technology – acknowledged as the future – and that is the new system of microwave curing. Giardina’s patented MOS® system is already proving successful in a number of prestigious installations across Europe.

Giardina Laboratory facilities are open for testing on the MOS System along with other finishing systems.

A major draw card to the stand was the special humidification unit from ML Systems of Denmark. GMD used this to demonstrate the importance of immediate humidification control, from the raw wood entering the factory through to the finishing department. The response to this was amazing with many visitors realising for the first time that long-standing problems in their finishing and paint shops could now be solved. ‘Although our stand was smaller due to the lack of availability of large exhibition machinery at the time’ says Gerry Doran, ‘this was undoubtedly one of the most successful Woodmex shows we've ever had.’

A Selectively Successful Golf Day

Broken windows and crashed buggies turned Select Windows of Walsall’s golf day into a memorable event for all those who attended!

Held recently at the Chase Golf Course in Penkridge, the day started well as Rob Laceby from Brownhills Glass managed to drum himself up some more business by hitting a few balls through the clubhouse windows.

As the day progressed, Select director John Woods’ team – comprising Dave Fox (Colorzone), Bill Smith, and Dave Jennings (Brownhills glass) – hit the celebratory beers a little too early, and managed to crash their golf buggy.

‘It was a great day – even Dave Fox’s after dinner speech which was a direct rip off from Willie Thorne’s who spoke at Status’ Golf day went down a storm,’ said Select’s General manager Dee Benning. ‘Our thanks also go to Securistyle who sponsored the nearest pin. We are all looking forward to repeating the success of the day next summer, though we may hold back the beers until after lunch!’

Fair Weather on the Fairway for Quantum

Championship course, Collingtree Park in Northampton, provided the perfect venue for Corby-based Quantum Windows’ recent Golf Day. Fortunately, the weather stayed fine for the event on 1st July, which attracted keen golfers from the housebuilding industry and many of Quantum’s key suppliers and installer customers. The day ‘tee-d’ off with a nine-holes Texas Scramble and after lunch the ten teams of four assembled for the main event - the Stableford Competition.

Top prizes were donated courtesy of sponsors, Beaufort Secure Design, Plastmo Profiles and Total Roofs. Quantum Windows also provided three superb Claret Jugs – replicas of the famous British Open Trophy – for the first, second and third placed players in the Stableford. Among the winners were Manny Martin of Portico GB Ltd, a Quantum trade customer from Bury St Edmonds, who scooped first prize of a Total conservatory roof; while runner-up Nigel Yates, Sales Director of Beaufort, received a new Odyssey 2-ball Putter.

(Left to Right) Nigel Yates – Sales Director, Beaufort Secure Design; Colin Lee – Sales and Marketing Manager, Quantum Windows and Chris Ashman – Founder, Quantum Windows.

Colin Lee, Sales and Marketing Manager at Quantum Windows comments, ‘Collingtree Park is a very challenging course with a number of lakes, and that’s where many of the 600 monogrammed balls we supplied ended up! From the feedback we received everyone had a really great day and it’s certainly an excellent way to build new business relationships and strengthen ties with existing customers, which is why we’re now considering making it a regular event.’

Quantum also video recorded each player’s first shot and is currently sending out DVDs to every attendee as a memento of the day.

Founded by Tony Britten and Chris Ashman in 1993, Quantum Windows started out as a window retailer and trade manufacturer. Since then the company has successfully expanded into the new build and commercial sectors and offers a choice of Beaufort aluminium and Plastmo PVCu systems.

Energy Efficiency Week 2004, 25 - 31 October

The Energy Saving Trust's annual Energy Efficiency Week (EEW 2004) campaign kicks off on 25th October 2004. It will feature new research about the impact of energy use on the climate and predictions for worse case weather scenarios if people do not start taking action now.

EEW 2004 will make clear the link between climate change and sustainable energy, showing consumers and those involved in the construction of homes how to cut energy use. This represents a change from previous campaigns which have traditionally focused on particular products such as lighting and boilers.

The campaign will also encourage the trade to take the lead and help to influence consumer choice. Architects, builders, retailers and local authorities all have an important and valuable part to play in contributing to the energy efficiency message. EEW 2004 is an inclusive campaign for the whole supply chain and the Energy Saving Trust will be working closely with influential groups to encourage participation.

Sarnafil Sales Through the Roof at Spring Gardening Show

Cheltenham based installer, C&G Cladding, specialises in roofline and Sarnafil single ply membrane flat roofing. With over 6000 installations already complete, C&G is qualified to talk about proactive marketing. The company will attend three shows this year to complement its all year round marketing.

David Anderson, Sales Manager with C&G, understands the importance of attending shows year after year. David comments: ‘We have been attending shows for a few years now, and we are seen and known as a reliable, trustworthy company.’ With over 10 years experience the company designs the stand for maximum visual impact, using bright colours to make it eye-catching. And, the magic tap water feature on the Sarnafil roof stand makes visitors look twice as the tap appears to be floating in midair.

The first show C&G attended this year was The Spring Gardening Show at Malvern. There were 92,000 visitors coming from all over the UK, attracted by celebrity gardeners including Alan Titchmarsh. Averaging 100 people onto the stand each day, 25 turned into leads and 5 into sales. C&G boosted its sales by £40,000 for a three day show.
