Energy-Efficient
Building in Hot Climates needs Integrated Building Solutions
In
co-operation with the Bahrain Convention & Exhibition Bureau, Nürnberg
Global Fairs is organising a new exhibition on intelligent building
in Manama, Bahrain in December 2005. The partner of the accompanying
conference at Intelligent Building Middle East (IBME) is the Bahrain
Society of Engineers. Technical support for the event is provided by
Dr. Helmut Hohenstein, member of the Institute for Corporate Research
and Management (ifu) at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, independent
consultant to the window, glass and facade industry, and Chairman of
the International Advisory Committee, and by Dr.-Ing. Werner Lang, independent
architect of Munich and expert on intelligent building systems in hot
climates, who has been appointed as member of the International Advisory
Committee.
Interview
with Dr. Helmut Hohenstein and Dr.-Ing. Werner Lang, International Advisory
Committee
Dr. Hohenstein, Dr.-Ing. Lang, what is the background for an exhibition
of intelligent building technologies in the Middle East?
Helmut Hohenstein: The building industry boom in the Gulf region
has long ceased to be a secret, on the contrary: Reports on impressive
building projects and immense investments in the United Arab Emirates,
Bahrain or Qatar can be currently found in the media almost every day.
The climatic conditions in the regions are, however, extreme: The Gulf
region is located in the earths 'sun belt', in which a daytime
temperature of 45 degrees in the shade is not unusual in summer and
the nights can be cold. The challenge is therefore to find a design
that can cope with these difficult conditions, provide comfort and at
the same time save the limited natural resources available like oil
and gas. This design should use the solar energy that is available in
abundance in the most varied ways possible - solar cooling is just one
keyword here. Energy-efficient building coupled with a high degree of
comfort for the user is accordingly required - Intelligent Building
Middle East focuses on suitable approaches for intelligent building
in hot climates.
Werner Lang: Problematic in this region is particularly the design
practice based on the American example: For instance, the outside of
the building consists of a static enclosure with a large proportion
of heat-repellent glass. Inside the building, there are cooling systems
for cooling the rooms heated by the remaining rays of the sun, people
and artificial light sources. The result is an extremely unfavourable
energy audit: Cooling a room by only one degree requires almost four
times as much energy as would be necessary for heating the same room
by one degree. Intelligent building enclosures and integrated building
technologies are therefore especially important in this region. IBME
2005 creates a suitable platform for companies offering such technologies.
How do you compare Intelligent Building Middle East with other building
exhibitions in the Middle East?
Helmut Hohenstein: You are obviously referring to the Big Five
in Dubai. It was never intended to compete with this large combined
exhibition, which covers a broad spectrum of extremely varied industrial
products. IBME (in contrast) focuses on the entire value creation chain
from developers to recyclers: A strong orientation towards the building
enclosure with all the associated technologies enables a design appropriate
to the region and its conditions - this is aimed at very innovative,
technology-orientated persons and companies.
Werner Lang: The difference here is the concept: The exhibition,
conference and special shows aim to combine the latest knowledge, products,
research findings and implemented projects with architects, planners
and technology-orientated companies in the worldwide building industry.
It is a question of considering and presenting intelligent building
from various viewpoints in order to convey a comprehensive picture of
the potential of future-orientated building in hot climates.
Which countries and regions are covered by the exhibition?
Helmut Hohenstein: Bahrain offers exhibitors at the exhibition
attractive access to the whole Gulf region and the Arab world, which
covers as many as 300 million people. The exhibition is also aimed at
the so-called MENA countries (Middle East and North Africa), a total
of 24 countries ranging from Iran and the North African countries like
Syria and Lebanon to the Indian subcontinent. A look in the direction
of rapidly developing India must certainly also be allowed for such
a specialised technology exhibition like IBME.
How does an international exhibition in the Middle East differ from
a German building exhibition?
Helmut Hohenstein: On initially exhibiting at an exhibition abroad,
companies should particularly aim to leave a special impression in the
country. The image plays a major role when exhibiting at events in regions
like the Middle East - German companies should therefore decide on a
professional, well-prepared presentation. Especially abroad and in particular
at technology exhibitions, the presentation must also reflect the efficiency
of German companies, which are regarded highly in the Middle East. This
is possible at manageable cost - in Bahrain, for example, by exhibiting
in the Bavarian company pavilion - and is often decisively influenced
by the persons and technologies present on the stand at the event. The
multistage concept together with the special show and conference takes
this into account.
How far has the planning of the accompanying conference progressed?
Werner Lang: The conference organised parallel to IBME will attain
a very high level, even compared with American and European standards.
The exchange of views takes place in the fields of politics and finance,
architects/planners and developers, and science and industry. A total
of eight keynotes are offered, ranging from building components and
cooling systems to simulation tools and building projects actually realised.
Well-known companies and experts are currently very keenly interested
in taking part as speakers. A provisional conference programme is expected
to be fixed by mid May. Details about the conference can be seen at http://www.intelligent-building-middle-east.com.
Finally, your advice to German companies?
Helmut Hohenstein: European and especially German companies enjoy
an excellent reputation in the Gulf region - this results in pleasant,
open-minded and very dependable business relationships. Forthcoming
investments in the region are a tremendous opportunity for German companies.
Safety in Bahrain also leaves nothing to be desired - I find the present
discussion about the Arab world in the German media biased and damaging.
The exhibition visitors will come to appreciate the pleasant business
climate and the high standard in Bahrain in every way.

Countdown to Chinaplas 2005
British
companies wanting to exhibit at Chinaplas 2005 are urged to use the
BPFs well recognised Export Support Service as the show is now
virtually full.
At the time of writing, the show is 90% full; however the BPF has reserved
space which is available to companies wishing to establish a presence
at Chinas premier plastics show. If you are interested in taking
part in the show please contact the BPFs Trade Executive Stephen
Hunt on 0207 457 5044 or email mailto:shunt@bpf.co.uk.
China is the worlds second largest producer of plastics products
and the second largest consumer of polymer in the world, Chinaplas is
the largest Plastics Trade Show in the Asia Pacific Region. The British
Plastics Federation (BPF) has been involved since the 1980s, co-ordinating
UK Pavilions at the show for the past 8 years.
Chinaplas 2005 (21-24 June) is an annual show taking place every other
year in Shanghai and moves on the interim years between Guangzhou and
Beijing. This year Chinaplas will take place in Guangzhou which is the
capital of the province known as the 'plastics capital' of China - Guangdong.
Out of China's 23 provinces Guangdong alone accounts for over a quarter
(25.5%) of China's plastics production and this is a figure that is
rising each year. In 2003, the total turnover of the plastics
products industry in Guangdong increased by 14.62% and currently stands
at nearly £5bn.
Chinaplas currently ranks in the top 5 Plastic Trade Shows in the world
and is growing in size and popularity each year. Of the 20+ Plastic
Trade Shows that take place in China annually, Chinaplas is the only
show that is officially sponsored by EUROMAP (European Committee of
Machinery Manufacturers for the Plastics & Rubber Industries). Each
year Chinaplas attracts nearly 15,000 people daily through its doors
with nearly 1000 companies exhibiting each year.

GP&T Event Promises Boost for Flat Glass Specialists
Glass
Processing & Technology (GP&T) exhibition is set
to provide a further boost for the flat glass industry when it takes
place at the NEC Birmingham UK on 17th, 18th and 19th May 2005, the
second event in the series. Widely hailed a success by exhibitors and
visitors alike following its launch 18 months ago, GP&T went on
to be honoured as the Best Launch for a trade show by the Association
of Exhibition Organisers, which represents the exhibition industry itself.
Now, in the run up to the 2005 event organisers EMAP Maclaren report
stand sales already ahead of the last show despite there being five
months to go. Most of the big names have already signed up again,
or are expected to, commented Steve Redman, Event Manager. GP&T
is already larger than last year, so visitors can be certain of a worthwhile
visit.
GP&T was established following one of the most extensive research
projects undertaken in recent years by EMAP Maclaren, which is a division
of one of Britains biggest exhibition specialists. The results
confirmed the organising teams belief that there was a need for
an exhibition and conference forum as the processing and specification
of flat glass becomes increasingly complex following legislation and
regulation in all areas of building and construction.
GP&T will therefore follow a similar format to that established
with the first event, with a large business-to-business exhibition,
in-hall events showcasing glass crafts and specialist skills, and a
seminar programme aimed at glass professionals. The Architects Pavilion,
which succeeded in attracting full houses throughout most of the last
event, will take place once again. Programmes will be published in February.
Further information can be found on the GP&T web site at http://www.gptexhibition.com,
on which visitors may pre-register, and potential exhibitors obtain
details about taking part in the event. The site offers a number of
innovations, such as links that automatically paste the event in users
Outlook diaries, and alert friends and colleagues.
Kombimatec
Exhibits at Fensterbaus' Frontal Moscow Window Show Again
The
second Frontal Window Exhibition,
the Russian exhibition organised by Fensterbau, Germany, was held in
the new exhibition complex in Moscow this January.
Although it was minus 15 degrees celcius and snowing heavily there were
probably twice as many visitors as attended the first Frontal held last
year.
With adverse weather conditions, as they expect at this time of the
year, building activity is curtailed and they use the lull in business
as an opportunity to visit shows and research ways to develop their
businesses.
Kombimatec machines have been exhibited in St. Petersberg and Moscow
every year since 1997. Kombimatec is a well-established name with Russian
window fabricators.
The Kombimatec EV470 CNC automatic cleaner received a great deal of
attention because it can easily cope with the cleaning of the new range
of profiles with large rounded decorative surfaces that are being introduced
into the Russian market.
Kombimatec will be seen again this year in Moscow in early April at
the Mosbuild Building Exhibition show. The weather should then be a
little more inviting.
GTI Kombimatec has an extensive partner reference list and invites all
window fabricators & profile suppliers to visit the design and manufacturing
plant in Luton, England to see machines being built to high exacting
standards. Please call 01582 455 934 to arrange a visit or alternatively
view products on-line at http://www.kombimatec.com.
