Sustainability Takes Centre Stand at Interbuild

Working with the organisers of Interbuild the Council for Aluminium in Building is attending Interbuild 2006 held on April 23rd to 27th and heading up the centre piece for the aluminium in construction feature in conjunction with the Aluminium Federation - Alfed. Both membership organisations wish to promote their services to the industry sector whilst offering a drop-in area for specifiers where any questions of the use of aluminium in construction can be fielded. The 42 square metre stand will be designed to be a networking area for visitors and association members whilst also explaining the benefits both organisations can offer the industry and its membership.

It is apparent that aluminium is growing in popularity as the number one choice of window material for new executive homes. This trend has been felt most in London where virtually all new high rise residential properties use aluminium windows and doors. This trend has now spilt over into replacement products for existing homes and refurbishment projects where slim lines and security are of paramount importance.

CAB Members are also seeing a marked increase in enquiries for new housing sites where aluminium windows are being offered as an upgrade package to the traditional timber or PVCu windows fitted as standard. There are also enquiries for traditional new housing sites where the choice has been made to offer aluminium windows as the standard installed product.

Today's aluminium windows and doors now incorporate some very sophisticated thermal insulation systems which offer slim lines with strength and good levels of insulation which more than meet the new Document L requirements.

As a direct result of this increase in activity the public are becoming more aware of the benefits in choosing aluminium in preference to the traditional window materials in the market. Whilst aluminium products can be more expensive to purchase they do offer a wide choice of colour, excellent security options and above all the comfort of knowing they will retain their looks and performance for a very long time.

As most responsible homeowners and businesses look to recycle materials today, remember that aluminium is 100% recyclable as we have been well informed on TV. Recycling may be a long time off however, as some of the earliest examples of aluminium windows date from the early 1930s and are still going strong today. It's safe to say that the choice of aluminium as a replacement product could last a lifetime.

When the product eventually is replaced, an average recycling rate of 92% is being achieved as published by Delft University of Technology as part of the Aluminium for Future Generations programme. Some of the most impressive recycling rates were obtained from the Wembley Stadium site which exceeded the average by recycling 96% of the aluminium reclaimed from the building.

GPD Returns to China in April 23 - 24, 2006

The Glass Processing Days Conference returns to China in conjunction with the China Glass Expo in Beijing. The conference targets members of the international glass community who take a special interest in the industry's developments in China.

China Glass is scheduled for April 25-28. GPD China will be held immediately before that to ensure that effective participation in both events is possible. The status of the event now moves from that of a seminar to a conference.

This time, there will be two parallel sessions;
a practical session for processing and technical demonstrations suitable for glass experts, glass production and construction personnel

a markets and architectural trends session, suitable for top management.

The programme also includes factory visits to local Chinese-owned glass industries to familiarise participants with the practical implications of market-oriented glass production in China today. The main supporter of the GPD, Tamglass Ltd, has operated its assembly unit in China for a number of years now and thus built up a state-of-the-art understanding of the local market mechanism.

Since the conference presentations will be non-commercial, all 'speaking' companies will be offered presentation tables to display commercial information about their products and companies.

The theme in 2006 is the use of high-quality safety glass in buildings to improve energy management, safety and security.

If you're interested in participating either in GPD China 2006 or GPD 2007 in Finland, please contact Ms. Tiina Penttilä, tiina.penttila@tamglass.com.

New Seminars help Companies Avoid Crisis

The Window Industry is facing tough times, with more and more fabricators and installers feeling the pressure of fewer leads, less orders and cut-throat margins. According to Industry consultant Andrew Scott companies need to take action now, or face extinction ‘There are too many companies trying to service fewer and fewer customers, and ultimately there will be winners and losers. Some companies will develop a new strategy to adapt to this new market, others will continue to do what they've always done - and face extinction.’

To deal with this crisis a new series of hard-hitting seminars was launched at Glassex, with widespread support from across the Industry. Hosted by Andrew Scott from Purplex Business Consultants, the two Seminars - Sales Masterclass and Business Supergrowth - aim to tackle the two main issues facing the Industry ‘In a tough market, fabricators & installers need to learn how to improve their sales skills to win orders at the right margins, and Sales Masterclass tackles this problem head-on. The second Seminar, Business Supergrowth, provides installers with the tools and strategies to grow and improve their business and outperform competitors - even in a difficult market’ added Scott.

The 2006 Window Industry Seminars have already received widespread bookings from installers and fabricators across the UK but spaces are strictly limited and are already selling out fast. The two Seminars are held at various locations across the country:

Leeds - 12th April
Birmingham - 11th May
London - 24th May
Bristol - 6th June

Sales Masterclass starts at 9am and finishes at 12pm, and Business Supergrowth starts at 2pm and finishes around 5pm. For those companies wanting to improve their sales and margins in 2006 and adapt to this changing marketplace, it is advisable to book now. Places are just £149 per seminar, with a free place for every four booked. Companies can book online at http://www.purplex.uk.com, by telephone on 0870 062 5318 or fax on 0870 787 9407.

Speakers Confirmed for Energy Seminar

FaberMaunsell (ODPM), BFRC and Energy Saving Trust confirmed to speak at industry-wide seminar, Ricoh Arena May 10th

Experts on the building regulations, energy efficiency and the window industry will speak at the seminar, Increase your profits: Energy Efficiency in Focus, sponsored by Edgetech IG Inc. ‘This free seminar is an opportunity to hear the latest thinking, quiz the experts and take part in an industry-wide debate,’ says Edgetech's Sales Director and General Manager Andy Jones.

‘In this tough market, companies can't wait to see what others will do before acting themselves. Many believe the new Window Energy Ratings system aids end-user recognition, adds value and margin and makes it easier to sell windows. Others say it's a voluntary scheme that takes time and money, so why bother?

But what else is in the pipeline? The speakers, which include Frances Galvanoni of the Energy Saving Trust, Robin Kent of the British Fenestration Rating Council and John Palmer of FaberMaunsell, on behalf of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, will present the facts and more.’

Jim Moody of Tradelink Direct, Gareth East of Saint Gobain Solaglas and Gerhard Reichert, Vice President of Business Development of Edgetech IG Inc. will also be speaking.

Register online at http://www.521621.com/seminars or contact Anne O'Connor, at Edgetech on 02476 705570 to book your place.

glasstec 2006: Special Show ‘glass technology live 2006’

The importance of solar energy as a key source of electricity is growing at the same steady pace as is the potential for glass in solar building components. A special show ‘glass technology live 2006’ organised at glasstec 2006 in Düsseldorf from 24th to 28th October, is to focus on ‘Façade-Integrated Photovoltaics’.

Subsidies for solar energy in Germany and other countries have provided this new branch of industry with spectacular growth rates, and it is highly likely that solar modules will also become established as active construction materials for building skins. In addition, electricity can be generated by these façades.

The use of standard modules is straightforward in cold (ventilated) façades. But, there are also other alternatives. In all-glass house fronts photovoltaics modules can work as sunshades that generate power. All-glass modules for double-glazing units or simple air-handling skins have a number of innovations.

Individualised solutions are now made possible by an enhanced variety of products in terms of dimensions, formats, colours, transparency and transmission degrees.
Large-format glass-glass modules with highly efficient crystalline solar cells have already surpassed the 10-m2 mark. In 2006 the Construction Supervision Authority is expected to issue the first Type Approval for this type of module on the German market, so removing the last obstacle to its use in overhead single glazing. For especially demanding façade designs, crystalline and amorphous technologies also offer partially transparent designs.

Novel type solar cells make it possible to re-locate all contacting to the reverse side of the solar cell. These render a higher energy yield and make for a particularly homogeneous exterior view. Laboratories are already busy working on the next but one cell generation such as the pigment solar cell. This cell type will work entirely without costly silicon technology.

glasstec 2006 will be presenting ‘Façade-Integrated Photovoltaics’ at the special show and the accompanying technical symposium. Guided by innovative products and developments the symposium is designed to illustrate the products' manufacturing technology, process engineering and applications.

The ‘creation’ of a solar module, plant engineering for module manufacturing and the integration of modules in functional glazing, including applications in windows and house fronts, will provide a unique presentation and information platform. The Glass Technology Forum under the guidance of the VDMA (the German Machinery and Plant Manufacturers' Association) is supported by the Fraunhofer-Institute for Solar Energy Systems, (ISE), who will coordinate the show.

Looking Back on Polyclose

The organisers say that once again, this 12th edition of Polyclose was without a doubt a big success. A total of 15,364 people from Belgium and other countries visited Polyclose in Ghent/Belgium between January 19 and January 21. ‘The Polyclose team and the more than 370 exhibitors from different countries have done everything within their powers to make this edition a fully-fledged trade fair again. More than 120,000 invitations were sent out, dozens of advertisements and articles were placed in trade journals all over Europe. Many professional visitors from home and abroad had no hesitation travelling long distances and, on the Friday, facing a veritable cloudburst just to be able to attend this biennial international trade fair. In the professional area of window, door, front and access technology and sunblind there is no other comparable trade fair in the Benelux.’

Polyclose reaches for new heights....
Polyclose did not only grow in width, it also grew to new heights. It was quite noticeable that the stands were made more attractive, more original, but, more particularly, were also built higher. ‘A development that underscores the philosophy of the fair. Because it's not about quantity, but about quality. Something that is also emphasised by the exhibitors. When asked a few brief questions afterwards, many companies reported they were very happy. Most of them said that for them the fair was already a success on the Friday.’

During their quest for new trends and market players, visitors could also enjoy original acts. From pantomime to Miss Belgium, real cocktail shakers and the mini cinema. All in all it was a highlight for both visitors and exhibitors.

Discernible trends.....

New guidelines for ventilation grilles
From January 1st, 2006, new legislation came into force in Belgium with regard to interior air-conditioning. This legislation flows from the so-called EPB Energy Performance Standard. The new guidelines in the area of ventilation in housing construction and renovation in Belgium predominated. What was noticeable was that suppliers of ventilation grilles offered training opportunities to visitors who were looking for this information. Polyclose also gave exhibitors the chance to introduce their adapted/new grilles, as demanded by this legislation.

From key to finger scan
The development of traditional locks to ‘domotica’ and beyond. Domotica are the electronics that one encounters in and around a building. The possibilities are without precedent and developed from keys to remote control, infrared as well as radio-controlled. This was quickly followed by the impressive transponder or chip, the finger print scan and the iris scan. These applications are not standard yet in housing construction, but they will offer unprecedented possibilities in the future. This is a sector that as a result of rapid developments is sure to receive a lot of attention again at the next edition of Polyclose, in 2008.

Architects get an in-depth view......
The professional architects who visited Polyclose were given star treatment. The specialist displays gave them the chance to see the latest trends in the areas of profiles, materials and glass. That this meant they had to miss out on the different bricks was something they were prepared to accept.

Polyclose in Europe.....

One aspect of the fair that stood out was the large number of Dutch exhibitors and visitors. This is proof that this specialist trade fair is within the Benelux the obvious place where professionals can find everything they are looking for. Even visitors from the northern provinces of The Netherlands had found their way to Ghent, not to mention the many international visitors from all parts of the world. Of course they came from countries in Europe, but also from, among others, Iceland, Russia, India and Iran. As a result, Polyclose retains a permanent spot on the international fairs map. The trend that became apparent at this edition was that Belgian companies also presented themselves with their Dutch partners on bigger stands. A development that is sure to continue in 2008. Confirmation of the fact that the presence of the ‘Hollander’ is regarded as natural in Ghent.

Waiting list...
Securing a place for yourself at the fair is no longer something that can be taken for granted. From November last year, the fair organisation was already working with a waiting list. Coupled with the strict entry conditions, this positive development means that potential exhibitors have to move fast if they want to be there in 2008.

Dates for the next Polyclose: January 17, 18 and 19, 2008

Closing Report - 3rd Fenestration China 2005

China’s economy keeps on growing – and puts the People’s Republic in the headlines as the future fourth-largest economic nation in the world. The long-term boom markets also include the building industry. Window and facade construction was presented as a subsegment of the industry at Fenestration China, which took place in Peking from 16-19 November 2005. The trade fair has consolidated its leading position in China: The big names in the industry were present and the figures for exhibitors and visitors rose again. Some 200 companies (2004: 180) from nine countries were represented in Peking. Nürnberg Global Fairs as overseas co-organiser was more than satisfied with the figures: 23,500 visitors (2004: 22,000) found their way to the trade fair.

The prospects for the coming years are still promising: China offers German window construction companies good growth rates and an estimated annual market for windows and doors in the three-figure millions range. Fenestration has established itself as a major trade fair in the window construction sector in China – and the exhibitors agree with this assessment. The total display area of 7,150 square metres net (gross: 19,000 m2) was used mainly by companies from the window (steel, aluminium, wood and PVC) and door sectors (commercially available and industrial doors and garage doors). Exhibitors from segments such as hardware, accessories and shading systems were also present in smaller numbers.

The presence of the industry’s key representatives at the trade fair demonstrated the importance of Fenestration China for the Chinese market. The exhibitors came from nine countries in addition to Germany, with companies from Australia, France, Great Britain, Italy, Korea, Switzerland, Turkey and the USA. Twelve well-known companies from the window construction industry presented their products in the German pavilion alone.

The 23,500 visitors at the trade fair in Peking were mainly manufacturers of doors, windows, awnings and roller shutters, and architects, planning consultants, building engineers, building contractors and interior decorators from 23 countries. This year’s exhibition was again accompanied by the conference 'Fenestration Days China' (subject: Applied Energy Efficiency in Buildings) – a successful event with some 182 visitors and 27 well-known speakers from China, Germany, the USA, Australia, Finland, Belgium, Singapore and Switzerland.

Nürnberg Global Fairs expects to organise a pavilion again at the next trade fair, so that German companies can exhibit at attractive terms. The 4th Fenestration China takes place in Peking from 5-8 December 2006.

Fensterbau 2006

Trade visitors at the exhibition duo fensterbau/frontale and HOLZ-HANDWERK, which takes place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 22-25 March 2006, can look forward to a comprehensive range of products from over 1,200 exhibitors from all over the world. Another good reason for visiting the exhibition is the extra information offered by the supporting programme on windows, facades and woodworking. This year's highlights include the Forum Architecture - Windows - Facades on Thursday, 23rd March 2006 in CCN Ost, the new congress centre of NürnbergMesse.

The theme of the 3rd Forum Architecture - Windows - Facades is ‘Technology and/or Architecture’. As in 2002 and 2004, the programme of the half-day event for architects and planners follows a strict order. Only four presentations are to create the link from theory to detail, and this with reference to the latest developments in the fields of architecture, windows and facades. The presentations are therefore structured with the following levels: Theory / Practice I - International / Practice II - National / Detail.

The theory level, in this case the theory of facades, is represented by Andrea Compagno of Zurich with his presentation 'Energy-Efficient Facades: State of the Art'. The services of architect and designer Mario Bellini of Milan have been obtained for the Practice I level. Elmar Schossig of Gatermann Schossig Architekten Cologne follows with Practice II and the Detail level is examined by Dr. Helmut Köster, architect and light planner of Frankfurt am Main.

Andrea Compagno is an international facade planning consultant and well known for numerous presentations and publications in journals and books. He is currently co-operating in several projects in Italy with Mario Bellini Associati S.r.l., for example, the Centro Culturale in Turin and Palazzo Pepoli Vecchio, the municipal museum in Bologna. Besides his many demanding and mostly very extensive architecture projects, Mario Bellini achieved world fame as a designer back in the 60's and 70's. His furniture and product designs are included in all museum design collections in the world. Gatermann Schossig Architekten is one of the most innovative consultant architects in Germany. The architects complete a number of their projects at the end of 2005 / beginning of 2006, including projects distinguished by features such as integral facade techniques, like the Triangle tower block and the Kontor 19 project in Cologne and Capricorn House in the Düsseldorf media centre. Dr. Helmut Köster, who has co-operated intensively with the Cologne architects for many years, is Germany's leading expert on daylight and artificial light control with slats. His book entitled 'Dynamic Daylight in Architecture', published by Birkhäuser in 2004, shows principles, systems and projects for daylight planning and is regarded as a reference work on this subject.

Participation in the Forum Architecture - Windows - Facades is free, but subject to prior registration due to the limited number of seats. Please therefore register as quickly as possible by fax: +49 (0) 711. 7591-410.

The registered participants receive the forum documentation in book form. The book contains the detailed description of the forum papers together with supplementary information on the subject.

British Rooflight will 'Steel' the Show

A new British made rooflight 'Lumen' is being launched at this year's National Homebuilding and Renovating Show (2nd - 5th March 2006, NEC Birmingham).

Manufactured to sit flush, this low profile rooflight meets all the standard requirements of a conservation rooflight suitable for a period property but according to the company is unique in its attention to detail. 'Everything from its fines lines of steel right down to its brass tag demonstrating its authenticity have been carefully crafted.' The Lumen rooflight will be exhibited by Tuscan Foundry Products one of the leading suppliers of conservation style rooflights at stand no: 1241.

The Lumen rooflight has been especially made to replicate a traditional Victorian design whilst providing one of the highest specifications of glazing available today through incorporating Pilkington Activ - the world's first self-cleaning glass.
Specialist non-reactive silicone has also been sourced to bed and front the argon gas filled units to resemble the traditional putty appearance found on an original Victorian rooflight. In addition, every rooflight is produced with an anthracite timber liner, hand-crafted by a British carpenter to provide the finishing touch on the inside.

Paul Trace, Managing Director of Tuscan Foundry Products explains the need for detail:
'Our engineers have designed and produced every detail beautifully, for example the winder mechanism is made from solid brass. I wanted to produce a rooflight that is British made, indicative of our craftsmanship and deserving of our heritage properties.'

Each rooflight will be made according to the specification and will have optional features including remote control opening to allow flexibility. Where an excess of light is necessary, the Lumen rooflight has a seamless design which can be linked together with a minimum amount of visual framework.

Industry Wide Seminar Set for May 10th 2006 at Ricoh Stadium

Keeping up to date with rapidly changing energy efficiency issues and environmental legislation is of paramount importance to everyone in the window and glass markets. But with so much going on, it can be a minefield to keep on top of it all, get the real facts and decide which are opportunities or pitfalls. Edgetech UK and other industry experts hope to provide all the answers, as well as a platform on which the glass and window industry can debate, in a free one day seminar on May 10th.

Andy Jones, Sales Director and General Manager of seminar sponsors Edgetech comments: ‘Our industry underwent massive changes in 2005 and this looks set to continue in 2006. Thanks to new legislation and other industry wide initiatives on energy efficiency, there are significant opportunities out there for any ambitious company - whether fabricator, sealed unit manufacturer, installer, system company, specifier, glass processor or machinery supplier - to exploit. This seminar will present the facts. Companies can't afford to stand still to see what others will do before acting themselves, particularly in a market as competitive as the glass and window industry.

‘The new British Fenestration Council (BFRC) energy A2G rating versus U-values has already provoked much discussion. Many believe the Window Energy Ratings system aids home owner recognition, adds value and margin and is therefore worth pursuing. Others say as a voluntary scheme, that takes time and money, why bother? And what's the future of Part L? Impartial speakers carefully chosen from among the industry's leading experts will be presenting the facts on these topics and more, so you can make up your mind and take decisions that are best for your business based on fact.’

The Seminar will take place on May 10th 2006 at Coventry football team's home ground the Ricoh Arena (pictured). Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. More information about the seminar with a programme of the day and confirmation of the speakers will be available soon, but anyone interested in getting involved can call Anne O'Connor at Edgetech on 02476 705570 or Fiona Lund at seminar organisers Michael Rigby Associates on 01453 521621 for more information at this early stage.

Glassex ’06: 'The Most Diverse for Years'

Glassex has long been regarded as the barometer of the glass and glazing industry, with the event in recent years of course more closely representing windows, doors and conservatories. As such it has always provoked an extraordinary level of passion within the industry, for better or for worse but everyone has an opinion!

A comment that has been voiced frequently is that the event is ‘biased’ towards a particular sector: For many years the systems companies appeared to dominate, then machinery and more recently it has, apparently, been the conservatory roof systems suppliers that have taken over, although Glassex can only ever reflect the requirements of its exhibitors, and trends within the marketplace.

The pundits will therefore be delighted with Glassex 2006, with the event promising the most even balance of exhibitors - and therefore products and services - for years. No one sector can be singled out as being over-dominant, with an excellent spread of companies showing a huge range of the latest, state-of-the-art products and services designed to sharpen the competitive edges of the thousands of visitors that will pour through the doors from the 5th to 8th March.

The biggest window systems extruders in the business are vying with the biggest roof systems makers, whose displays are punctuated by the biggest machinery manufacturers and distributors. A decent smattering of trade fabricators will be competing for attention with the legions of software houses that now serve the business through their digital miracles. In other words, rows and rows of companies whose attentions are directed specifically, and totally, to making life easier for those scratching their livelihoods from the glazing industry. There is, quite simply, nothing else like it, so no wonder, if you make or fit windows, you will at some point at least think about going to Glassex.

Glassex has always been able to stoke reaction within the industry, for which the event has been the annual showcase for more than a quarter of a century. In this time Glassex has evolved from its glass roots (the glass industry now has GP&T) to become the annual pilgrimage for window, door and conservatory manufacturers, installers and, increasingly, specifiers.

Of course, not everyone of a glazing tendency goes to Glassex every year, but anywhere upwards of 8,500 do, numbers enough to impress the chairman of many a League 1 football team, and probably a few Championship sides too. And the Mecca that draws these not inconsiderable crowds is anywhere upwards of 170 companies, all of whom are offering the very best solutions to whatever problems visitors must be enduring simply as they are not already buying from them.

Glassex ’06 is far more than a trade market however, these days also assuming the mantle of educator, trainer and entertainer, in addition to the glazingfriendsreunited function that it performs so well.

The Glassex Seminars for this year have now been developed into three streams that are designed to offer focus and pragmatism for all delegates. Legislation, training, recycling, and standards are covered by Monday’s ‘Industry’ programme, whilst frame makers can enjoy a series of presentations by manufacturing specialists in the ‘Production’ seminars being staged on Wednesday morning.

The highly successful seminars launched last year – ‘Glazing in the Public Sector’ - which succeeded in shifting Glassex into the paths and awareness of public sector managers and executives, will be staged once again with a tailored look at Part L, and disability, and the key areas of energy efficiency, recycling and training thrown in. All presentations are, of course, made by speakers at the top of their game.

The Glassex Challenge will again provide interest for Glassex visitors, and exhibitors taking a few moments away from their stands. The honest efforts of the competitors lay credence to the honourable guiding principle of the event to ‘raise standards’ amongst installers. But there is also great pleasure to be taken from watching the watchers, especially visiting installers who, whilst too proud, or busy, or tremulous perhaps to actually participate, nonetheless thoroughly enjoy the blood, sweat and tears of those who are prepared to put their skills to the test.

Stroll from the frenetic atmosphere of the ‘Challenge’ to the Ultraframe-sponsored gallery of the Glassex Conservatory Design Competition (CDC), which has succeeded in its short life (this is the third outing) in parading some quite extraordinary conservatories, and glass structures. Hopes are high this year that the winners will again move the game on; the organisers are reporting entries from some top players in the market, so expectations are great as the entries flood in.

This Glassex has the fundamental ingredients to present a worthy day or two out of the office for even the busiest window man or woman; indeed, with thousands of metres of highly focused exhibitors, a comprehensive and well-considered Seminar programme, the sills and thrills of the Glassex Challenge, and cerebral outpourings of the CDC, just one thing more is required: you, the visitor. We look forward to seeing you.

Glassex 2006 will take place at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, from 5th to 8th March 2006, inclusive.
