HOPPE
Re-exhibits Hardware in Dubai
HOPPE (UK), the door and window hardware supplier, is displaying
a variety of handles and its ARRONE range of Locks, Door Closers,
Panic Hardware, Hinges and Access Control at 'The Big 5 Exhibition'
at the end of October in Dubai.
Keith Holt, Joint Managing Director, says that HOPPE hopes to
build on last year's success: A recent report* indicates
that ongoing projects in the Gulf region are now worth around
£370 billion and are growing by £2 billion per day.
So it was an easy decision to exhibit again. With big projects,
such as the Burj Dubai Tower, planned to be the tallest in the
world, the opportunity to show at one of the world's premiere
building and construction exhibitions was too good to miss.
Combining five exhibitions under one roof, there is a lot on offer
and this year over 17,000 overseas visitors are expected. We had
a great response last year - planned as an awareness raising event
- we ended up taking sizable orders on the stand. This year HOPPE
will be showing a broader range of hardware and with proven popularity
in the UK, we are hoping that the Big 5 will turn out to be another
Big success.

Clear
View of the Chinese Market
Fenestration
China 2006, the 4th International Exhibition on Windows, Doors and
Components will be held in Peking from 5-8 December 2006. There
will be a German pavilion with 14 exhibitors accompanied by the
Fenestration Days China conference.
Peking is building: The Olympic Games are approaching and the city
must improve its infrastructure and build modern sports facilities
and tourist accommodation. But not only the city is experiencing
a building boom at the moment - a lot of money is being invested
in the rest of China, too. The demand for windows, facades and doors
is growing accordingly - an interesting market for the German window
industry. A suitable presentation platform for the Chinese market
is the 4th Fenestration China in the China International Exhibition
Centre, for which Nürnberg Global Fairs acts as co-organiser
for the international organisation. As in previous years, the international
subsidiary of NürnbergMesse is also organising the German pavilion,
in which a total of 14 companies will exhibit.
China is currently present in the business press mainly because
of its impressive growth figures. This also applies to the building
industry: Experts estimate the newly developed building area at
some two billion square metres a year, but redevelopment projects
due in the cities in the coming years will also stimulate the building
industry and amount to around one billion square metres a year.
The positive development of Fenestration China is no surprise in
view of these figures: Some 200 exhibitors from altogether nine
countries and 23,500 visitors came to Peking for the last exhibition
for windows and façade construction and occupied a net display
area of 7,150 square metres. The exhibitors came mainly from the
segments of windows and doors, façade systems, roof windows
and sliding roofs, solar protection and ventilation systems, slatted
blinds and window shutters. The trade visitors in Peking included
architects, building engineers and consultant planners, plus manufacturers
and producers of windows and doors of steel, aluminium, wood and
PVC. Other visitors to the 4th Fenestration China included representatives
from the craft trades, supply trade and service sector.
The international exhibition is organised by CIEC Exhibition Company
Ltd., supported by the China Construction Metal Structure Association
and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade,
and Nürnberg Global Fairs is co-organiser. The organisers expect
extra growth in all areas this year - exhibitors, visitors and space.
Fenestration China 2006 will occupy a total of six halls - new keynotes
such as glass and solar protection for buildings are
also represented.
The event is accompanied by Fenestration Days China,
the conference on market trends and innovations in windows, doors
and facades, at which international experts express their views
on trends and developments in the industry. German companies in
the window and façade construction industry again profit
from attractive terms for exhibiting in the German pavilion organised
by Nürnberg Global Fairs. The German pavilion sponsored by
the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology offers attractive
stand packages and technical and organisational assistance for attending
the exhibition.

Sustainable Living Exhibition at St Paul's Church, Brentford in
October
An
exhibition of challenging new ideas and current examples of sustainable
design by London architects will be at St Paul's Church, St Paul's
Road, Brentford, Middlesex TW8 0PN until 26th October. Sustainable
Living by Design will feature 32 schemes of built and conceptual
architectural projects. These explore how architects in London are
using their expertise to revitalise the city fabric.
Edouard François (Jury member for Sustainable Living by Design)
commented:
'The issue of sustainability is now understood and here to stay.
It is going to change drastically the way we perceive, imagine and
create architecture. Today, we start from scratch. This is a once
in a lifetime revolution. We architects, as well as people involved
in design, feel extremely lucky to live in these historic times
where meaning exceeds shape.'
The thirty-two projects feature work by Sheppard Robson, Stanton
Williams, Urban Salon Ltd. and Kristian Peel/ Assael Architecture
amongst others.
Accompanying the exhibition will be a presentation about 'SixtyK
House' a project featured in the exhibition by Alan Shingler, Associate
at Sheppard Robson. This free event will take place at 6pm on 10th
October (lecture starts at 6.30pm). RSVP to RIBA London, email:

Sustainable Living by Design focuses on innovative housing solutions
which are laying a path for future ways of living. Despite the current
shortage of housing in Britain and the increasing cost of new homes,
we are witnessing population growth in cities across the UK. The
social and economic circumstances have developed a trend towards
a modern movement of 'urban living'. Culture is undergoing a dramatic
change with an increasing interest in eco-friendly homes as a response
to climate change.

Craftsmen
the Focal Point at glasstec 2006
For
the first time at glasstec, glass finishing techniques and glass
applications will have special shows for the skilled trades and
craftsmen on the Saturday of the fair.
glasstec and the skilled trades goes back a long way as the fair
originated from the glaziers' trade and it continues to be one of
the most important visitor groups. So in co-operation with the Federal
Association of Glazier Trades (BIV), Messe Düsseldorf has developed
an additional programme tailored to the requirements of craftsmen.
Focus on Skilled Trades takes place on 28th October.
A series of lectures will be held, organised by the glass
technology live special show. The themes will range from the
latest glass products for interior design through to finishing using
silk-screen prints, colour effect filters and stained glass up to
innovative glass application in facades. The focal point throughout
the event, organised by the Institute of the Glaziers' Trade, will
be the practical applications in craftsman's companies.
Spectacular glass products and applications await visitors on the
BIV's joint stand in Hall 9. No less interesting for glaziers' daily,
practical applications will be the ball-impact tests demonstrated
live on the stand to test the robustness and stability of security-application
glazing. A further highlight is the presentation of the 2006 Glass
Finisher's Prize. The entries submitted by glass finishers and glass
artists will once again demonstrate the broad range and high quality
of glass processing craftsmanship.
HOPPE
Scores Birdie with Customers
Forming
relationships in the fast-paced hardware industry is tough. HOPPE
(UK), the supplier of door and window hardware, used
its annual golf day at Patshull Park, Shropshire to strengthen ties
with customers and suppliers under a different sort of competitive
strain, as Keith Holt, Joint Managing Director, explains:
Our
recently launched 2006 Vision and Values programme underlined our
commitment to long-term partnerships. But we realise that it's not
always possible to spend time building relationships at work. So
along with our bi-annual customer visits to HOPPE's Swiss headquarters,
the golf day is another opportunity for us to meet customers and
suppliers under less formal conditions.
'There was a great turnout with 63 people participating in the golf
day. Playing in teams and singly everyone enjoyed the event. Mine
was, of course, the winning team and Richard Braithwaite, of Gibbs
and Dandy won the singles game.
Keith continues: In the evening we held a Gala Presentation
Dinner, which 100 people attended, for the players and those who
couldn't attend the day. HOPPE looks forward to next years golf
day, and the opportunity to show our customers and suppliers how
much we value our partnerships.

WHS
Halo takes a Swing at its Customers
A
glorious day in the first week of September saw WHS
Halo taking a swing at, or rather with, 100 of its customers
at the company's annual golf day. Of the 100 guests, 72 were golfers
who enjoyed a four-ball game over the Arden Championship Course
at the Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club.
The day started out with breakfast, and a swift practice 9 for those
looking to get their eye in; before an early lunch and the first
tee-off taking place at 12.20. As might be expected for the industry,
games were played in a highly-competitive, albeit good natured,
spirit with seven prizes awarded. The competition winners were:
Overall winner: Peter Hewitt, NAC Plastics Ltd
2nd: David Wanless, Radley PVCU Ltd
3rd: Neil Stinger, Yorkshire Windows
Best Par 3: Paul Richings, SWC Trade Frames Ltd
Best Par 5: Gary Wanless, Radley PVCU Ltd
Longest Drive: Sean Butler, Buckingham Double Glazing
Nearest Pin: Conor O'Kelly, National Profiles

(Left
to right) Jason Smith, Tradesmith; Sam Kennedy, WHS Halo; Kevin
Hill, John Fredericks; and George McKenna, Sidey Windows.
The
evening saw guests assemble for dinner where prizes were awarded
following a screening of a specially compiled highlights video of
the day's play. The evening was capped with a riotous performance
from top comic and three-time After Dinner Speaker of the Year winner
Tony Jo.
The whole event was a great success and as Sam Kennedy, WHS Halo's
Consumer Sales & Marketing Director, says, 'It has been our
best and most successful golf day ever. A great time was had by
all and we've had many plaudits from those who attended about the
thoroughly enjoyable day'.

Expert
Speakers from FIRA and TRADA Impart Industry Knowledge at W6
Visitors
to this year's W6 (Working with Wood exhibition) at the NEC from
8th - 11th October will be in an unique position to hear from timber
and furniture experts about significant issues affecting the trade.
FIRA and its sister organisation TRADA, will manage a full programme
of seminars throughout the Birmingham exhibition covering subjects
as diverse as major health issues affecting the wood processing
industries, innovation in recycling of wood and successful lean
manufacturing.
The rolling seminar programme has been designed to be both topical
and thought provoking, covering a variety of subjects that will
help attendees to gain a clearer understanding of business issues
within the furniture and timber industries. The timing is such that
delegates will be able to take this knowledge away with them as
they visit suppliers around the exhibition.
Managing Director of FIRA, Hayden Davies commented: Both FIRA
and TRADA felt it was important that the seminar programme was designed
to impart knowledge that visitors would find of use when talking
to exhibitors on their stands. We hope that the information they
gain will help visitors to make better informed buying decisions.
The audience will include members of both the furniture and timber
industries and seminar content will reflect market trends as well
as innovative technical developments. To find out more about subject
matter and timings and to book a place at any of these seminars,

HOPPE
and Elfa at 100% Detail
HOPPE (UK), the door and window hardware supplier, and Elfa, Scandinavia's
leading steel shelving manufacturer, have joined forces to enable
customers to source a flexible range of architectural ironmongery
and storage solutions from one supplier. Keith Holt, Joint Managing
Director of HOPPE (UK), says that 100% Detail, the leading building
products exhibition for architects and specifiers, is the ideal
place to demonstrate the range.
We're using 100% Detail to show architects, designers and
specifiers that it is possible to meet a wide range of tastes without
having to chop and change suppliers. There's no such thing as a
one-size-fits-all design. Every client commissioning an interior
refurbishment or new build project has distinct ideas about what's
right and wrong. Often a customer has seen a stunning piece of hardware,
but it's let down by poor functionality. So the choice you are left
with is to compromise function for form or alternatively spend valuable
time trying to source an equivalent product without the operational
flaws. HOPPE and Elfa's partnership solves these problems by making
a broad range of hardware and storage solutions available from one
supplier, and thanks to HOPPE's R&D the functionality and finish
is as good as the style.

BPF
Leads UK Group to Middle East
The
British Plastics Federation (BPF) is co-ordinating a
British Group to the Middle East for the first time in its 73 year
history.
In response to the growth of the plastics market within the Middle
East, the BPF will take a British Group to Arabplast
in Dubai, which runs from 13-16th January 2007.
The Dubai plastics industry is growing at a rate of nearly 20% per
annum with the importation of plastics goods more than doubling
in the last 4 years. Dubai acts as the re-distribution centre for
region and direct re-export trade has been valued at around £5.5
billion.
The British Group is currently 9 strong and still growing, this
is partly buoyed by a change in the rules for UK Trade & Investment
Grants Scheme which has resulted in the UAE being upgraded to an
'Emerging Economy'. This means more companies will now be
able to access £1,800 grants to exhibit at the show.
Iain Mcilwee, BPFs Business Development Manager said
'We are delighted to be visiting Arabplast in January 2007 in response
to a proposal from BPFs own membership. The Middle East is
a vast market with outstanding potential for export. The interest
amongst British companies has been particularly high, with machinery
products likely to be the key demand at the show.'
Companies interesting in joining the British Group at Arabplast
2007 should contact Stephen Hunt at the BPF on 0207 457 5044 or
email shunt@bpf.co.uk.

Daedalian's
Open House
It
was Open House recently at Daedalian Glass's
workshop and studio in Poulton le Fylde. The company is one of the
country's leading exponents of artistic glass design and processing
and, as part of its support for Architecture Week, took the opportunity
to entertain Sue Lawley and Linda Hodgkinson, the wives of the mayor
and deputy mayor of Wyre Borough Council, along with architects and
interior designers from the area.
The Architecture Week promotion has been taking place across the country
and Daedalian has had a stream of visitors coming to see work produced
by Davia Walmsley, head designer and co-founder of the company, and
her staff.
On Thursday guests were entertained in the traditional manner by a
local guitarist, and took the opportunity to see a slide show of work
produced by the company as well as view the work on display around
the studio, which left no-one in any doubt as to the outstanding skills
Davia and her team have at their fingertips.
This was glass with a difference - sandblasted, fused, laminated,
and colourful, with mainstream and modern designs, all of which are
creating a lot of interest with architects and designers across the
country.
Set up 20 years ago by Davia and her husband, Chris Walmsley, the
business has gone from strength to strength, building a reputation
for innovation and quality, whilst maintaining many traditional skills.
Daedalian's work can be seen in hotels, hospitals and offices across
the country. Some striking commemorative glass panels at Barrow-in-Furness
Hospital's new Oncology Unit and a stunning reception desk and room
dividers at Crystal Clear International's HQ in Liverpool are two
recent success stories; whilst two outdoor award-wining collaborations
have been at the RHS Show at Tatton Park in Cheshire and at this year's
Chelsea Flower Show.

glasstec
2006: Practical Applications
The
glass technology live special show has been a key component of glasstec,
which runs from 24th - 28th October this year. Since it was first
held at glasstec 1996, this innovative show has repeatedly featured
products with trend-setting development highlights and provided inspiration
for new glass applications and processing technologies.
Devised and produced by Stuttgart architect Professor Stefan Behling
for many years, it brings together universities, educational establishments,
companies and associations, pools their knowledge and uses highly
interesting and attractive exhibits to present the latest innovations
which the market has to offer. Visionary and experimental elements
are just as much a part of this as are solutions ready for series-production.
glass technology live is however not only an innovations show, it
also establishes the link between development laboratories and practical
applications. Today it would be impossible to envisage modern glass
technology and architecture without many of the products and applications
shown in Düsseldorf for the first time.
This becomes particularly evident when one looks at the example of
structural glass design. In 1998 the world's largest self-supporting
glass dome was still captivating visitors to the special show. At
that time Professor Behling, who had designed the dome, was already
demonstrating a far-sighted approach when he said: 'In the future,
glass ceilings, glass supports or even glass reinforced concrete will
be conceivable.'
Just two years later he showed a glass pavilion with a roof construction
completely supported by glass braces, and two years further on, pressure-resistant
tubes in laminated borosilicate glass used as supporting elements
were the highlight of the special show. This development demonstrates
how visions can result in practical-application products in just a
few years. Today all-glass constructions are a key component of modern
architecture - and the trend is continuing.
This year, using an innovative glass staircase, the possibilities
of innovative, transparent glued joints and their potential for architecture
will be demonstrated, showing perhaps another new growing trend. A
considerable number of experts from the glass sector are convinced
that adhesive technology will in future also play an increasingly
significant role in structural glass design.
No less interesting is the development of glass applications in facade
technology. Here, too, glass technology live has for many years been
the presentation platform for new concepts and the integration of
new materials. Holographic light-redirection glass, electro-chromic
and bent double-glazed glass elements as well as completely newly
designed fittings for glass installation were presented in the special
show as development studies or prototypes, before they became everyday,
conventional products in the area of facade construction.
The booming sector of photo-voltaic technology has experienced a similar
trend in recent years. A large part of the module variations integrated
in today's facades were already on display within the framework of
the special show. This year there will once again be a product premiere
with the world's first coloured thin-film solar cells for building
integration.
The list of innovative products and applications, which find their
way from glass technology live to practical applications, is growing
longer with every event. The most recent example of this is laser
technology, which was included in the special show at glasstec 2002
for the first time.
Used in glass processing, this trendsetting technology offers numerous
advantages compared to conventional glass processing. Mechanical engineers
have long since recognized this and have consistently accelerated
its development. In the past, after glass-cutting by laser had only
been possible using extremely thin materials, the next development
phase is now about to be completed. Before the end of this year the
world's first laser separation facility is to go into operation at
a float glass works near Magdeburg. Operating directly behind the
float tank, the new facility will separate the rim of the glass ribbon
in a previously unrivalled cutting quality. In this process the glass
thickness can be up to 28mm.
The creative and constructive interaction between research institutes
and the companies from the glass, fittings and facade sector not only
makes for a very interesting glass technology live, but also promotes
the development of new products and applications. The catch phrase
for this year's show is 'Houses of the Future'. A visit is therefore
worthwhile for all those who are involved with the production and
installation of glass in interior and external applications, as well
as for planners and architects.

DHF
Opens its Doors to Door, Shutter and Hardware Visitors
The
first ever Conference and Expo for the door, shutter and hardware
sectors will take place in Loughborough on Thursday, September 28th.
Its organisers, the Door & Hardware Federation, says the event
will showcase best practice in the sector and it expects a large
number of visitors throughout the day.
They will be able to visit a variety of trade stands. They will
also attend be able to attend workshops which cover a wide variety
of hot topics, including the latest legislation which is impacting
on the industry, a guide to the latest fire door hardware, and the
repair and maintenance of doors and shutters.
The DHF represents more than 90 per cent of the key players in industrial
and commercial doors & shutters and garage doors and also represents
the leading UK manufacturers of building hardware and architectural
ironmongery.
In previous years the DHF has held a trade show for its members
alongside its annual meeting. But this year, for the first time,
the event has been greatly extended in scope and non DHF members
are being invited to attend.
Said DHF chief executive Ian Wood: 'The expansion of the event,
and opening it out to non members, reflects the increasing importance
of the metal door and hardware industries within the construction
sector.'
The DHF Conference and Expo will be held in the conference area
at Loughborough University's Sir Denis Rooke Building, Holywell
Park on Thursday, September 28th from 9 am to 3 pm. Entrance is
free. A buffet lunch will be available for all delegates.
At the event there will be more than 25 exhibitors, ranging from
lockmakers to door security producers, who will be manning their
stands throughout the day. In addition there will be a number of
free workshops that delegates can attend.
Workshop topics include domestic fire safety, fire door certification,
the benefits of CE marking garage doors under the Construction Products
Directive, fire door hardware, access for the disabled, working
at heights, employment law, repair and maintenance, anti fall back
devices and power operated driveway gates.
Said Mr Wood: 'We are facing an increasing number of challenges,
in particular legislative challenges, but they actually offer us
greater commercial opportunities. Legal changes put the onus of
risk onto the building owner or occupier, and this presents opportunities
to our members who offer certified and CE marked products.
'The DHF Conference and Expo is an opportunity for us to showcase
best practice within our industry and we are confident it will attract
a large number of visitors.'

Debut
Success for Jedson Composite Doors at CIH Show
Composite
door specialist Jedson Composite Doors Ltd attracted interest from
local authorities and social housing providers throughout the UK
following its debut at the 2006 CIH Exhibition in Harrogate.
The
Barnsley-based company displayed its wide range of quality fibreglass
composite doors for the social housing market during its debut at
the four-day show.
There was a lot of interest in the product, as well as our
supply and fit service, which is specially tailored for this demanding
marketplace, commented Director James Davies. As a result,
we are hosting factory visits from prospects to discuss further
how we can supply low maintenance solutions for all their external
door requirements on projects of various types and sizes.
He added: Given this level of this response and a number of
promising leads, we have already booked a bigger stand for next
year.
The Jedson composite door range holds PAS 23 and PAS 24 compliance
- the industry's most stringent performance and security standard,
thus meeting demanding public sector specifications. The low-maintenance
doors combine high performance with the elegance and aesthetics
of a timber appearance. The doors provide thermal insulation up
to six times that of timber equivalents and will not twist, warp
or bow. All doors also adhere to 'Eco Homes' requirements of a Global
Warming Potential of less than 5 and an Ozone Depletion Potential
of zero.
Doors can be supplied pre-finished in four through-colours - white,
green, red or blue with a white interior finish - which are highly
resistant to dents or scratches. Alternatively, they can be sprayed
in any RAL colour to customers' requirements. Woodgrain finishes
are also available, along with a choice of glass designs.
Using its state-of-the-art CNC machine, the company can also prep
door slabs to accept customers' own ironmongery to fit their particular
frames. Additionally, all fibreglass doors are guaranteed for ten
years and suit all types of properties.
