Feet
of Endurance!
When
Sherborne Window's Claire Long
completed the 'Race for Life' raising money for cancer charities
a few months ago, husband Chris immediately declared his intention
of completing the New York Marathon in aid of Sherborne's adopted
charity CHASE Children's Hospice.
Although a keen cyclist Chris had never attempted anything like
this before, so it was with a little trepidation that Chris lined
up with 38000 others on the 3rd November in an attempt to complete
the gruelling course around New York City.
26 miles later Chris was able to reflect on his achievement, 'It
took me 4hours 56 minutes which I am fairly pleased with, I had
hoped to do it in 4 and 1/2 hours but I have to be honest and say
that it was a lot tougher than riding a bike!!
I don't think I am built for Marathon running and my body
was seriously hurting after about 18 miles but what with the crowds
cheering me on and all the training I did I managed to keep going
and even did a little sprint at the end - well it seemed like a
sprint to me!!
Thanks to everyone who has sponsored me so far - we are nearly
up to £5000 and if anyone still wants to donate, I know that
Chase would be delighted - details can be found on our website at

Wrekin
Windows Helps Fund New School Playground
Wrekin
Windows,
specialist supplier of PVC-U windows and doors to the social housing
sector, has helped to make playtime a bit more special for the children
at Ringway Primary School in Wythenshawe, by helping them purchase
new equipment for their outdoor learning centre.
In
connection with Bolton-based construction company G&J Seddon,
Wrekin Windows has saved the school £5,000 by supplying and
fitting new windows in the school caretaker's house at no cost.
The school had already set aside the money for the much-needed replacement
job but when supplier Wrekin Windows was called on for help, a team
was sent out to supply and fit the windows completely free of charge.
After re-allocating the money saved to the outdoor learning centre,
the school children were thrilled to receive £5,000 worth
of new play equipment for their playground.
John Williams, sales and marketing manager, Wrekin Windows said:
We are all delighted to have made such a difference to the
children's playtime at Ringway Primary School.
Not only has the school caretaker benefited from improved
accommodation with new secure, low-maintenance PVC-U windows but
the children have acquired new equipment to fill their outdoor playground
as well. This will hopefully bring them many years of fun.

Windowstyle
Bungee Jump for Flood Fund
Ten
was the number for a bungee jump fund-raising team recruited at
Windowstyle UK, the South Yorkshire-based
manufacturing unit of the Style Group, the UK's largest independent
PVCu replacement window and door manufacturer.
The ten strong team, led by Windowstyle's managing director, Nick
Lilburn, nervously dropped 150 feet on an indoor bungee line at
the famous Magna Centre in Rotherham to raise £10 for every
foot dropped to contribute a fantastic £1500 to the Sheffield
Flood Appeal Charity.

A
leap of faith - Windowstyle Managing Director, Nick Lilburn after
his successful 150 foot bungee jump to raise funds for local flood
victims.
Nick's
team of men and women was chosen from fellow employees and included
Nick Bacon, Ian Eccles, Tony Ward, Zoe Miller, Kelly Harrison, Helen
Gillick, Rohitt Mehta, Paul Jagger and Simon Horbury all from South
Yorkshire where the recent floods caused unprecedented devastation
earlier this year. Many employees, family and friends were themselves
seriously affected by the flooding.
Nick Lilburn explained the reasons behind the effort: Our
factory is situated at Wombwell, near Barnsley and was also flooded
at the time. Our workforce was magnificent and kept the damage and
disruption to a minimum. However as there were so many people in
South Yorkshire that suffered far worse, we were determined to do
something to reflect our concern and support more positively.
I once made a list of the 10 things I really wanted to do
in my life and the bungee jump was on it. So it was the right choice
for me and it was a marvellous show of support from my colleagues
at Windowstyle who kept their nerve and joined me on the day. I
am not sure I will be repeating it but it was a well worthwhile
experience and could not have been for a better local cause.

Sash
Gets Physical
Not
happy with reaching the summit of the fenestration industry, employees
at Sash have decided to go that
one step further by putting their determined goal setting attitudes
to the ultimate test of skill, fitness and team work, by entering
this year's Trans Peak Challenge...the third in a row for Sash!
Six
employees have rallied together from different areas of the business
to pitch their abilities against the elements to help raise awareness
about heart disease and its devastating effects, but this is certainly
one exercise that is not for the faint hearted. In order to prepare
themselves for the challenge that lay ahead, the team comprising
commercial director, Brian Oxley; website marketer, Jonathan Harper;
shop floor operatives, Roy Hart and Aaron Kolka; personnel accounts
assistant, Nicola Garrity and finally Karen Youel from Sash accounts,
had to undertake a gruelling six week training schedule, each accruing
a staggering 100 miles of walking, cycling and jogging over the
course of the programme.
The day itself is split over nine stages and the Sash team will
work together to complete a 26-mile journey across the rugged terrain
of Derbyshire's spectacular Peak District, using foot and pedal
power. Competing against at least 19 other teams, they will certainly
need to use their combined willpower and ingenuity to complete the
12-hour challenge in the quickest overall time. The nine stages
altogether will amount to the grand total of 43k and will test the
team's mental abilities and fitness levels to the very core.
Commenting on the challenge, commercial director Brian Oxley said:
This is an immense test for us all, both as a team and individually.
Our working ethos within Sash has meant that we have always worked
closely together and that team playing is all-important. All we
are doing is transferring our approach to work to the terrain of
the Peak District. This is the third year that Sash has put a team
forward and each year we have been extremely successful.
Hopefully this time round we will be able to better our previous
attempts...but if not we would have still achieved something great!
To be held on the 23rd of September 2007, team Sash will be giving
its all to help raise money for the British Heart Foundation. If
you would like to sponsor the team, then please contact Karen Youel

Network
VEKA Defeats Everest!
Network VEKA
has once again proved its motto Reliable in the extreme
by flying the flag at the highest point on earth.
The
feat comes courtesy of James Ogilvie, brother of Network MD John,
who conquered Mount Everest in aid of charity.
I feel privileged to be one of the few people ever to have
stood at the top of the world, said James, a seasoned adventurer
and author of the travel guide Adventure Holidays Worldwide.
And I'm very grateful to Network VEKA for helping me to realise
my dream.
The trade organisation part-sponsored the expedition, to raise funds
for the charity Tree Aid, which helps to alleviate poverty in Sub-Saharan
Africa.
This is not the first time Network VEKA has gone to extremes. Three
years ago, it sponsored the first ever crossing of the Gobi Desert
by kite buggy, a feat which was later recognised by Guinness World
Records.
The ascent also continues a family tradition; James and John's cousin,
Stephen Venables was the first Brit to ascend Everest without the
use of oxygen.
