Premier Donation Tees Up New College Mini-Bus

Premier Profiles, extruder of PVCu window, door and cellular foam profile, has donated the £5,750 proceeds from its annual corporate golf day to Doncaster School and College for the Deaf.

Located on its own purpose-built campus, the college is nationally and internationally recognised as one of the leading facilities in high quality education, training and care for deaf and hearing-impaired young people as well as those with communication and/or learning difficulties. Premier’s donation will go a long way towards the cost of a brand new mini-bus for the college.

The cheque was presented to college principal, Alan Robinson and chair of the trustees, Bobbie Roberts by Premier’s new managing director, Paul Rice. Paul said: ‘We are delighted that we have been able to support such a worthwhile local cause with funds raised at our annual golf day. Each year we look to put something back into the community, and I would like to thank all employees, customers and suppliers who took part in the golf day and contributed so generously towards an impressive final total.’

Alan Robinson added: ‘Organisations like ours rely heavily on charitable donations from external partners and local businesses and we are extremely grateful for the generosity and support shown by Premier Profiles. The money will go directly towards the purchase of a new mini-bus, an invaluable resource in bringing academic and recreational benefits to all our students.’

Charity Bike Ride from John O’ Groats to Lands End

Congratulations to Ian Turner of Shepley installer Leeds Glass Windows who, along with two friends, Dave Wells and Steve Smith, completed a mammoth bike ride for three cancer charities, Bowel Cancer, Cancer Research and MacMillan Nurses.

The cyclists rode nearly 900 miles in a week in August from John O’ Groats to Lands End, raising a total of £2,000. ‘The money was donated to the charities closest to our hearts,’ Ian explained. ‘The ride was in the memory of Joan Wells, Dave’s mum, but also held dear in our hearts are Stephen Fisher and Denis Burton who sadly lost their fight against cancer in the last 12 months.’

Tails They Win - NSPCC 'Coins' it in from Network Veka ...Ann goes 'Hands-On' for Charity Cash

The NSPCC has gained £665 on the toss of a coin, thanks to Network Veka and UK Fasteners.

(l to r) Ann and Network Veka staff Alexandra Carter, Rukshana Johnson and Susan Lunney hand the cheque to NSPCC Corporate Manager Martin Ashton.

The children's charity was chosen by Ann Hanagarth, the fastener supplier's Sales Manager after she won the charity 'Heads and Tails' fundraising game at Network Veka's recent conference.

Delegates and guests each paid £5 and indicated by putting hands on their heads or bottoms while celebrity speaker ex-Yorkshire and England cricketer Mike Cowan eliminated players by tossing a coin.

Ann got her hands on the money - so to speak - by miming 'tails' to win the final round.

Judith Hayes, NSPCC Community Appeals Manager for the region, says the money will be put to good use in its work with children and families.

'It will be very much appreciated helping us to fund ongoing projects in the area such as therapeutic work, schools services and our Quality Parenting and Family Support work,' she added.

UK Fasteners was represented at the AGM as one of Network Veka's approved suppliers.

Coffee Break Earns £3000 for Charity

HW Plastics has once again taken part in MacMillan’s Cancer Relief’s annual coffee morning fundraiser.

The team at HW Plastics, led by customer service team leader Sam Leach (fourth from left) raised an impressive total as part of the world’s biggest coffee morning, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief.

The event last year smashed the record for the world’s largest simultaneous coffee morning, with groups across the globe congregating over their ‘cuppas’ in aid of the MacMillan charity.

This year saw HW Plastics staff making donations in return for their morning tea - but some members of staff got even more involved. Terry Lucking, an employee of Lex Commercials based at HW’s Trentham Lakes site, spent the day dressed as Jeeves the eponymous butler, providing waiter service for a charge of 20p a brew, and contributing all of his earnings to the charity.

A range of other events also took place on the day, adding to the fundraising total. A tombola raised money and smiles at Trentham Lakes, whilst a Luxury Draw offered top prizes, such as Premiership football tickets, food hampers, water park tickets and bottles of spirits. Across the country staff and customers were amused by an email ‘Guess the Director’ competition at £1 a play, where players were invited to match the HW Director to their baby photo.

Customer Service Team Leader Sam Leach was very pleased with the tremendous total raised by HW Plastics. ‘To get together as a company with our customers and suppliers and not only have a good time but also raise over £3,000 for such a worthy cause was a remarkable achievement. Many thanks to everyone who donated money or prizes – and we hope to see you all next year.’

Sentinel Supports its Local Community

Llantrisant-based Sentinel Doors, manufacturer of residential doors for local authorities and housing associations, responded quickly to a plea from the local community by donating one of its composite doors to a Methodist Church in Mid Glamorgan.

'Our church has suffered a great deal of vandalism in recent years and the main door was finally broken down.' explains Reverend John Young, minister of Tonypandy Methodist Church. 'In searching for a replacement, we came across local company Sentinel Doors. Fortunately, one of their employees, Ian Evans, is the son of our church treasurer, and he asked Sentinel if they would sell us a door.'

Commenting on the donation, Sentinel's sales and marketing director Phil Mundell says: 'As soon as Ian made us aware of the problem, we decided to donate the door as it offered the church security and protection from vandalism and provided us with an opportunity to support the local community.'

Flying High with Windowlink

Jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet is not everyone’s idea of a birthday treat. However, for Giles Hayhurst (pictured below), Managing Director of Windowlink Ltd, a parachute jump provided an exhilarating way to celebrate his 50th birthday and raise money for a local hospice.

Five other Windlowlink staff joined Giles on his high flying adventure at South Cerney Airfield near Cirencester, together with Windowlink customer, Lisa Thacker from St Helens Glass. As first time parachutists the plucky team all faced their tandem jump with some trepidation. After leaving the plane they experienced a breath-taking 30 second free-fall, securely attached to a qualified instructor, before opening their parachutes at 5,000 feet for the final descent.

Safely back on the ground Giles and his fellow jumpers are now looking forward to handing over a cheque for £750 to the Prospect Hospice, which offers respite care to terminally ill people of all ages as well as those caring for them. Giles was particularly keen to support a local charity and chose Prospect, based near Swindon and close to Windowlink’s headquarters, because of the worthy service it provides to the whole community. And as Windowlink agreed to cover the costs involved in the jump, all the sponsorship money raised will go to the charity.

‘As first timers we were all very apprehensive, especially during the half hour it took to get up to the right height,’ commented Giles once firmly back on two feet. ‘It was certainly an amazing experience and something I wouldn’t have done had it not been for charity - a great memory to commemorate a landmark birthday.’

Over £63,000 for Hope House

The 2003 efforts of GM Fundraising have resulted in a cheque for £63,212.17 being handed to the staff and children of Oswestry based children’s hospice Hope House. Gary Morton of GM Fundraising personally thanks each and every one who has helped and given overwhelming support during this year’s endeavours.

The donation will be used specifically to cover the costs of employing three nurses for one year. This will have a direct benefit to the children who depend on the constant care and attention of the nursing staff. It will help ensure that Hope House will continue to offer high quality support to terminally ill children and their families.

Over the past three years GM Fundraising has donated a total of £158,689 to Hope House. This sum is the equivalent of seven and a half annual nursing salaries, or one month’s total running costs for the hospice, or the cost of running the community team for a whole year.

‘This is a most remarkable and generous contribution, and has helped in a very real sense to ensure the future success and stability of our hospice,’ said Hope House’s Chief Executive, David Featherstone. ‘Every person who has been in anyway involved with GM Fundraising has made a direct contribution to this fantastic achievement. All the staff, the children and their families appreciate the generosity from the bottom of their hearts.’

GM Fundraising will continue to support Hope House through 2004. The next date for the GM Fundraising annual dinner is yet to be finalised, but is planned for sometime in September 2004. Around the World in Seconds with Nolan

Profile 22 fabricator and installer, Nolan UPVC, sponsored the first ever Zip Glide through the largest single-span glasshouse in the world. The event, held in September 2003, raised over £44,000 for the Welsh based cancer charity, Tenovus.

200 brave individuals, including local business people, university students and medical staff, took part in the 100 metre long slide, suspended 50 feet above plants and trees from climates as diverse as Chile and Australia.

Tenovus was established in 1943 by ten businessmen (hence ‘ten-of-us’). The charity is committed to raising money for cancer research programmes, and has funded patient support and counselling services and a freephone Cancer Helpline.

Nolan Nicholas, Managing Director, explains, ‘We are really proud to be the sponsor of this unique event. One in three people are diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life, and we are pleased to support Tenovus in the remarkable work they do.’

Marketing Executive for Nolan UPVC, Steve Dennis, was one of the ‘gliders’. He says of the adventure, ‘Although it was over too quickly, the glide was an exhilarating experience – a unique way to see the Great Glass House!’

The Great Glass House at the National Botanic Garden of Wales is the world’s largest single-span glasshouse, and boasts some impressive statistics. Measuring 110 by 60 metres, the roof comprises 785 panes of glass, which are each 4 by 1.5 metres. The structure houses plants from all the continents of the world, and the conditions needed for each are recreated and maintained in order to conserve threatened species.

Established by Nolan Nicholas in 1987, 'Nolan UPVC is one of the most respected and highly regarded PVC-U fabricators and installers in Wales, with a reputation for reliability, quality and value-for-money.’ says the company.

Kombimatec Director Completes Great North Run for Charity

Ian Wheatley, Sales Director for UK window machinery manufacturer GTI-Kombimatec, raised hundreds of pounds for the Parkinson’s Disease Society when he completed the BUPA Great North Run on Sunday 21st September, rubbing shoulders along the way with some of the world’s best professional runners.

Ian, who trained for several months before taking on the challenge, completed the race in just under two and a half hours.

Now in its 23rd year, the Great North Run – sponsored by health organisation BUPA for 11 years running – is the world’s biggest half-marathon race, attracting up to 60,000 entrants each year. A tough but nonetheless enjoyable community event, the Great North Run takes its competitors across a 13.1
mile route from Newcastle to the coast in South Shields, Tyne & Wear. This year around 47,000 runners competed in the event, with renowned British athlete Paula Radcliffe taking the first prize in the Ladies’ Event.

Ian’s run has raised money in aid of the Parkinson’s Disease Society UK, a charity he chose after his grandfather suffered with the disease. Among the first to sponsor him in the race were his Kombimatec colleagues, including Managing Director Derek Parsons. Says Ian:

‘I’m really pleased that we managed to generate funds for such a commendable cause. It’s been hard work preparing for and competing in the event, but it was definitely worth it. If I can do it, anyone can!’

Glass Industry Experts Help Tampere University Hospital's Child Cancer Ward

A reception held in connection with Tamglass' Glass Processing Days Conference, which took place on 13-15 June 2003, has raised funds for the Tampere University Hospital Children's Ward 6, which treats children suffering from cancer.

The donated funds were raised through an auction, to which companies participating in the conference had contributed various items.

The total sum collected was nearly 8,500 euros. The money was used to acquire five laptop computers for the use of children in the ward as well as computer games for each machine and two computer desks. Using the laptop computers, children can continue their school studies while in the hospital and can also play games. The computers were supplied by the Tampere company HM-Office Oy. In addition to the auction, all those who attended the GPD event had the opportunity to donate money to this charitable campaign when registering for the conference.

According to Eeva Kääriä, senior physician at the Tampere University Hospital Children's Ward 6, the donation was very welcome. There has been a severe shortage of computers and now, finally, the ward can offer better opportunities for study and entertainment within the hospital, even when illness confines patients to their beds.

Among the contributors to the donation were such world-renowned companies as Pilkington Plc, St. Gobain and Asahi Company. The items auctioned included sketches of cars and high-quality glass items in their design stages, drawn by Fiat's Head of Design Michael Robinson.

The Glass Processing Days Conference has been held eight times. The first conference in 1992 was attended by 30 experts. By 1997 the conference had achieved the attendance of 900 visitors. The GPD Conference is organised by Tamglass, the safety glass machine specialist, which is part of the Kyro Group.
