Charity Fundraising Success for Wolfgang Gorner

Wolfgang Gorner, Business Unit Director at REHAU Window Division, has raised more than £3000 for the National Autistic Society after successfully completing a charity bike ride from London to Paris.

Wolfgang cycled the 300km in just three days wearing a shirt emblazoned with the logos of sponsors from across the window industry.

As well as REHAU, Wolfgang received support from Astraseal, Chester Windows, Climatec, Iceni Windows and Smiths Glass and also from numerous individuals, colleagues and customers.

At the end of his three day challenge, Wolfgang said:

‘I am a very keen cyclist so was always confident I could complete the ride, but it was great to do it with a group of friends and with so much generous support.

‘I would like to thank all those who pledged donations and who helped me to reach my fundraising target for this really worthwhile cause.’

GM Fundraising Saddle Up for the USA

Not content with the Top 2 Bottom and Tower 2 Tower charity bike rides, GM Fundraising will be saddling up for their biggest ever adventure in September 2008 when they set off across the USA. The ride will be known as Ride 4 Hope with the important objective of raising over £100,000 for Hope House Children's Hospice.

The gruelling schedule will involve a 16 day cycle ride from San Diego to Atlantic City, amounting to 3,046 miles and over 108,000 feet of climbing which is equivalent of over 3.5 times the height of Everest. Each day 3 teams of 4 riders will cover on average a total of 190 miles in 12 hours, longer than most stages of the Tour de France.

A number of riders have already agreed to this adventure and the necessary training and commitment including several that have competed in the previous charity bike rides, though a few places still remain. Gary Morton of GM Fundraising is understandably passionate about it and commented: ‘This is a once in the lifetime opportunity for people to achieve a significant personal achievement and perhaps more importantly the chance to raise a significant sum for those less fortunate than ourselves. Charities, Hope House included, only survive through the generosity of the general public and I'm confident that the whole industry will really get behind this.’

A significant amount of time has already been put into the route which has now been agreed down to the very last road. Hotels have been pencilled in and the remaining infrastructure including support staff and vehicles is currently being finalised. The riders now face a 15 month training programme which will involve 1-2 overseas training camps and a number of training weekends...

Network and Friends Raise £3,000 for Baby Unit

A special hospital newborn baby unit is over £3,000 better off, thanks to generous members and guests at Network VEKA’s recent AGM weekend.

Delegates had raised £500 in a prize draw for five winners to take on snooker ace Steve Davis at a frame of pool each. Then, at the evening event, more than 250 diners added a further £700 in a game of Heads & Tails. Two VEKA fabricators contributed £2,000 between them when Dave Walker of Hull-based Vulcan Windows bid £400 for an autographed cue and Dennis Thorpe of Future Products of Mansfield added a fantastic £1,600 with the winning bid for the pool table itself.

Network VEKA’s Shelley Crocombe and VEKA Big Rig Co-ordinator Andy Goodman recently travelled to the Neonatal Unit at Birmingham Women’s Hospital to hand over the cheque in person to Neonatal Sister Tracey Budding. Andy and wife Lisa have special reason to be grateful to the hospital.

Steve Davis was special guest at the AGM and dinner in his role as brand ambassador for Network VEKA, appearing on advertising and marketing material for members.

Jo-anne Neale, Purchasing Administrator, says support for local and national charities is an important part of the HOPPE philosophy: ‘Last year HOPPE sponsored us to take part in the same event and it was a great success. This year we raised £595 and HOPPE paid for our entry fees and brought the kit we needed for the run. Ten of us took part, some found it easier than others, but we all look forward to doing the same next year.’

First UAP-Nepal Community School Opens

The first of five schools being built in Nepal by hardware and decorative glass products supplier UAP, has now been opened.

The school, the Batuk Bhairab ‘Philip Andrew Jennings’ memorial Primary School, funded entirely by UAP and built in Bhimphedi township, south west of Kathmandu, was opened by TV actor Sean Wilson, famous for his role as Coronation Street's Martin Platt.

It was evident that Sean was deeply moved by the poverty he encountered in a country where the average annual income is only £165, yet also greatly impressed by the touchingly simple dignity, friendliness, trust, and openness shown by the Nepalese people, but where most of course are illiterate.

Sitting in front of the newly completed school with a group of small children, Sean commented that, ‘This little building will have a big result.’

The school was built in partnership with North West of England based charity DWCW-Nepal, which raises funds to assist with school building projects and immunisation programmes. UAP has not only committed to building five schools in the country out of its profits, but has also held a charity ball in order to raise additional funds for immunisation.

UAP Managing Director David Jennings emphasises that the completion of the schools building project requires nothing extra from UAP's customers or suppliers. ‘All we want our customers to do is to continue supporting UAP by buying our products.’

‘I was delighted at the strength of feeling from people at Carl F to support the work of this local charity. Listers’ Accountant Smiles!

It's not very often you see an accountant smile, especially when they are giving away money, but here is the proof that it really does happen.

Lister Trade Frames has become the main sponsor for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice 'Time to Care' initiative. Specialist Nursing Assistants provide end of life care and support for patients in their own home 24 hours a day. This hands on care is provided alongside other community healthcare providers and offers support, assistance and reassurance to those facing this most difficult of times.

The specialist care provided by the Douglas Macmillan Hospice costs £1.50 every minute, so Listers is encouraging everyone to just give a few minutes of their time and help them to raise funds.

The picture showing Listers' accountant smiling is all because he is handing over a donation to Paul Gregory (one of Listers’ customers) who is taking part in a sponsored rally from Stoke on Trent to Florence in order to raise £20,000 for the Hospice. The ‘Z-Ball Rally’ takes place in June and Paul and the other ‘Z Ballers’ have restored their 13 classic Nissan 300zx Z31 sports cars for the journey, averaging 20 years old and with a combined mileage of a whisker under one million miles.

‘So, if you would like to get your accountant to smile, or just want to make the Douglas Macmillan Team and their patients a little happier please log on to http://www.justgiving.com/Listers where you can make your donation. Thanks very much for your support.’

Windowstyle Makes Dreams Become Reality

Windowstyle UK, the largest single employer in the Wombwell, near Barnsley area, is set to provide South Yorkshire children with life threatening illnesses the chance to make their wishes come true following the company's latest charitable donation.

The company which is part of the Style Group UK, the independent manufacturer and retailer of PVCu replacement windows and doors, has decided as part of its corporate responsibility programme, which aspires to support a number of local charities, to offer a donation of £2850 to the When You Wish Upon A Star charity. That organisation aims to grant the 'Wishes' of children suffering from a life threatening illness from the age of two to sixteen, with the aim to bring a smile to what can be a traumatic period not only for the child concerned but also for the families.

Windowstyle UK HR Manager, Penny Marlow (left) and Managing Director Nick Lilburn (centre) present Joanne Kernon (right) with a cheque for the When You Wish up on a Star Charity

Nick Lilburn, the Managing Director of Windowstyle, explains:  'Our Company commands a very important place in the local economy of South Yorkshire and particularly the Wombwell and Barnsley areas. As our factory and Group have developed over the years we have always looked to supporting local community activity where possible and we have, from time to time, organised special events for several local good causes.  When the money for this particular donation became available we chose this charity as a most deserving need.  There can be little more reward for anyone than to see a child, often with only a short time to live, being able to make a dream or wish come true.'

Joanne Kernon, the Charity’s Regional Manager said: 'To make a child’s vision a reality we rely overwhelmingly on the generosity and hard work of our supporters.  Quite simply, the more money we receive the more Wishes we can have the pleasure of granting whether it is to meet Mickey Mouse in Florida or their favourite football star or, indeed, to make almost any other dream come true.  It is truly rewarding to see the joy and happiness of terminally ill children and their families during these special moments.'

Howzat! Free HOPPE hardware for new Bolton Cricket Club

HOPPE window and door hardware has been supplied free to help build a new club house for a cricket club in Bolton.

To the club enlisted the help of local businesses (including HOPPE) and celebrities to raise funds and materials. The finishing touches to the new facilities have just been made.

Jim Fawcett, Chairman of Darcy Lever Cricket Club explains: ‘We got a lot of support from local businesses, but when word spread that we were building the cricket club purely by fundraising, the boxer Amir Khan and England test cricketer Sajid Mahood got involved to raise our profile. We couldn't have completed the project without their support and donations from companies like HOPPE.’

Nigel Taylor, Architectural Division National Sales Manager of HOPPE (UK) states: ‘HOPPE aims to help its customers wherever possible, especially when it's for a good cause such as this.’
