The Shepley Six Jump 10,000 feet for Charity Again

Following an earlier parachute jump that raised thousands for charity, another ‘Shepley Six’ have just taken the plunge to raise an impressive £5,392 for Cancer Research UK – the largest volunteer-supported cancer research organisation in the world with a dedicated team of 3,000 scientists.

The brave Shepley employees descended over Lancaster’s Black Knight Parachute Centre. Shepley Window Systems colleagues Barry Roberts, Hayley Gibson, James Brisbane, Stuart Simpson, Steve Durban and Nigel Johnson plummeted earthwards for nearly two miles before touching down safely to claim the money pledged by generous Shepley staff, friends, customers and suppliers.

Commenting on the latest daredevil jump, Gary Torr, Shepley’s managing director says proudly: ‘They’ve done it again! After setting a £3000 target, the team nearly doubled the amount raised for Cancer Research UK. Thank you to everyone involved for such a great effort!’

Alcoa Foundation Joins in Effort to Help Victims of Three Hurricanes

Alcoa Foundation has awarded $85,000 in total to aid the victims of Hurricanes Charley, Gaston and Ivan. First, it awarded $30,000 in grants to American Red Cross chapters in Florida as part of an effort to help communities devastated by Hurricane Charley.

Hurricane Charley's 145 mph winds left little standing in its wake affecting power, gasoline, water and food supplies and causing 2.5 million people to be evacuated as it made landfall on August 13th. American Red Cross officials estimate that the relief and recovery effort will become one the largest in the organisation's history.

The Foundation then awarded a $25,000 grant to the Jamaica Red Cross as the island braced itself for Hurricane Ivan, expected to be the most powerful hurricane to hit the Caribbean in a decade.

Alcoa has been a part of the Jamaican community since 1959 with the formation of Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica, then a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa. While the operation began with bauxite mining, a refinery was later built and a series of upgrades has brought the capacity up to 1.25 million tonnes. Between 1976 and 1998, Alcoa Minerals of Jamaica sold 50% of the operations to the Jamaican government, with Alcoa as the managing partner.

On the same day (September 10th) The Alcoa Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to the American Red Cross chapter in Richmond, Va. to aid victims of widespread flooding caused by Tropical Storm Gaston, which dumped more than a foot of rain on the region within a few hours on August 30th and claimed the lives of eight people.

5K for £1K in the Siegenia Race for Life

A Race for Life by Coventry-based hardware and ventilation systems manufacturer Siegenia-Aubi Ltd has raised over £1,000 for a national cancer charity.

Eight of the firm's sixteen-strong team took part in a 5km ladies-only Race for Life at the Coventry War Memorial Park in June, raising a collective total of £1,000 for Cancer Research UK. A £200 donation from Adrian Vickers of Roto took the total past the £1,000 mark.

Says general manager Lèann Hearne, 'We chose Race for Life because so many colleagues' lives have been affected in some way by cancer. The run gave us all an opportunity to give something back that will help in the fight against the disease, as well as a reason to get and - we hope - stay fit!

'I'm really proud of the team; six people finished the race in less than 30 minutes, a particular achievement given that many of us had never run that distance before.'

Now in its 10th year, Race for Life is a Cancer Research UK initiative and the country's biggest fundraising event. This year it is estimated that more than 400,000 women will take part in 150 races across the UK and the charity is on target to raise over £20 million in 2004.

Following their 5k success several of the Siegenia team are now aiming to run 10k by the end of the year.

Vicker Goes to Top of the World

In September 2004, Roto Frank’s operations director, Adrian Vicker, will be undertaking a mammoth motorcycle ride across Canada and the USA in aid of Children in Need.

Travelling on his BMW R1150GS Adventurer, Adrian will ride from New Jersey, across Canada and the USA into Alaska, before returning to New York. The journey will take almost three weeks to complete and will follow the ‘Top of the World’ route along the trans-Canadian, Yellowhead and Alaskan highways.

The epic motorcycle ride will see Adrian cross a wide variety of terrain, from the wide open spaces of the Canadian prairies to the glacial splendour of the Arctic Circle.

This year’s trip follows Adrian’s extremely successful motorcycling adventure of last year, also in aid of Children in Need, which involved riding from Land’s End to John O’ Groats, then on to Dover. That fundraising effort raised over £6,000 for the charity thanks to donations and sponsorship from companies and individuals throughout the fenestration industry.

Adrian comments, ‘Last year’s trip really captured a lot of people’s imaginations and helped raise a considerable amount of money for Children in Need, so I thought I would try to do something even more adventurous. The Top of the World expedition offers a real challenge to serious bikers and will demand a high degree of concentration as we take a 16-day journey through hugely varying scenery and riding conditions.’

Adrian hopes to raise in excess of £10,000 from his ‘Top of the World’ expedition. As an added incentive to potential sponsors, Roto Frank will be providing a prize of £500 worth of Center Parcs vouchers to the sponsor who provides the closest estimate of the distance Adrian travels and the time taken during the ride. Additional sponsorship opportunities are available for corporate sponsors.

Anyone wishing to support Adrian in his efforts can contact him at Roto’s Rugby headquarters on 01788 558651.

Show Time at Staffordshire Trade Windows

HW Plastics fabricator Staffordshire Trade Windows recently opened a showroom at its premises in Trentham, Stoke-on-Trent. Legendary England goalkeeper, Gordon Banks OBE, part of the 1966 World Cup winning team, performed the opening ceremony.

The show room features an extensive range of conservatories & windows fabricated from HW's Vinylock and Elite 70 systems. Managing Director, Neil Selby, comments 'the idea behind the showroom is to provide a place for our customers to bring their customers to show how impressive the finished products are. Brochures and laeflets can do so much, but seeing a finished window or conservatory in a realistic setting provides so much more information and reassurance.'

Managing Director, Neil Selby with Gordon Banks OBE

The opportunity was taken to raise funds for Gordon Bank's chosen charity. The Childrens Emergency Access Fund, based in North Staffordshire, supports local children during their stay in hospital. Mr Banks spoke passionately about the aims of the charity and the good work it does.
