VEKA and Paramount 'Pool' Resources for Hospice

A Manchester hospice has gained £400 and a special pool table for visitors, thanks to VEKA, Paramount Window Systems and snooker legend Steve Davis.

The six-times World Champion was special guest at a Paramount Open Day where he autographed a professional pool table before leading a draw to win the table, in aid of St Ann's Hospice.

But the giving didn't end there. The draw was won by VEKA's Duncan Bennett - who immediately donated the table itself to the hospice too.

The table has now been installed at St Ann's Little Hulton facility - one its three sites in the area - and Community Events Officer Margaret Beck says it is proving very popular.

‘It's absolutely marvellous,’ she said. ‘Our visitors really make good use of it, especially the teenagers.’

Steve Davis was at the event in his role as ambassador for Network VEKA, of which Paramount is a founder member.

SWC Tackles Prostate Cancer Awareness Raising at its Trade Counter

SWC Trade Frames Ltd, a PVCu manufacturer based in Scarborough, successfully launched a 'One Stop Shop Trade Counter' last year so that Traders, Builders & DIY enthusiasts could buy all the materials they needed to install windows, doors & conservatories in one place.

As part of an awareness raising and fundraising campaign for the Prostate Cancer Charity,
SWC Trade Counter Manager Jon Hodgson has been asking customers what their understanding was in relation to knowing the 'Signs and Symptoms of Prostate Cancer.'

Jon Hodgson reported 'Like myself, almost all the customers we've spoken to were aware of prostate cancer, but very few knew what they should look out for. There is clearly a need to raise awareness about this issue in a fun but serious way. I would recommend that those who want to find out more, whether male or female! look at http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk'

Susan Richings Operations Director at SWC said 'Prostate Cancer affects approximately 32,000 men each year. My father died prematurely of the disease and I have an uncle who is currently being treated for it. It is my hope that all men - young and old, make the effort to find out more about the possible signs and symptoms of prostate cancer, in the same way that women have been encouraged to raise their awareness about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

'Working in a predominantly male environment, it is my belief that many men can still be a bit 'ostrich' like when it comes to addressing matters concerning their health. My view is, if in doubt get it checked out! Don't leave things till it's too late! A worthwhile £200 pounds to date has been raised for the charity and several staff have volunteered to become 'calendar boys' for our next awareness raising project. Every little helps as they say!'

What to look out for
* Most men with early prostate cancer don't get any symptoms but may experience peeing more often, especially at night, or need to rush to the loo, or have difficulty starting a pee, or strain or take a long time to finish, or feel that their bladder hasn't been emptied properly, or have a weak flow or some dribbling.

Facts & Stats....Did you know?
* Only men get it!
* A man, in the UK, has a 1 in 11 risk of developing it!
* It is the most common cancer amongst men!
* Almost 32,000 men in the UK are diagnosed every year!
* 10,000 men in the UK die of prostate cancer every year - that's one man every hour!

The risk of getting prostrate cancer gets higher as you get older. Most men are diagnosed over the age of 50 but it can affect men from the age of 40. You are 2 and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father, brother or son has been diagnosed.

Charity Mountain At K2

Not only has K2 given the industry what is arguably the best conservatory product range but the company has also given back into the local community thanks to a number of charity events.

By getting involved in a number of activities, the company has created a charity-led culture which has included the Red Nose Day for Comic Relief, a charity penny pot to get rid of those unwanted 'coppers' and a midnight walk for Bolton Hospice.

However, one of the most adventurous activities was the Benidorm Half Marathon which was an arduous 13 mile course along with Bolton-based international steeplechaser, Stuart Stokes who actually won the event.

Ella Walsh, one of the team from K2, has run in this annual Spanish event for three consecutive years and was delighted that she was able to run alongside Stuart Stokes and raise money for Christies. She commented: 'It's a great buzz to run the half marathon but it's even better if you can run it with a recognised sportsman like Stuart and watch him achieve the win. Most importantly though, we've helped raise over £1,000 for charity.'

K2's managing director, Sally Fielding concludes: 'K2 is a company that is mindful of its commitment to the community and we will continue to support both Christies and other local charities and causes. We're also pleased to continue our sponsorship of Stuart Stokes and look forward to celebrating his further successes.'.

Safestyle Scores for Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Goals were high on the agenda as Safestyle, the independent replacement window and door retailer, scored a real winner to support the campaign to keep the Yorkshire Air Ambulance flying.

Yorkshire-based Safestyle UK fielded a strong five-a-side soccer team to compete in the annual charity event organised by solicitors, Gordons which raised more than £1000 for the flying ambulance fleet.

A total of ten teams were invited to compete at the Kirkstall, Leeds five-a-side centre, Goals and Safestyle, led by its stars Dave Owen and Jason Lawford, fought its way through the rounds to finish runners-up to the Baker Tilley team.

John Ross, the Chief Executive of the Style Group, Safestyle's parent company, commented:

‘This was a great result because as a Group we have a strong corporate responsibility programme, where we remain committed to trying to help local charities while at the same time helping our staff to enjoy their employment.

'The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is an increasingly important and necessary part of the county's emergency services and so any help we can give is well worth while. Our team has been invited to return for the 2008 tournament and has high hopes of bringing the title to Bradford, the location of our head office.

‘Attending over 1000 incidents requiring emergency air assistance every year, the Air Ambulance faces a massive fundraising target of having to raise nearly £7,000 every day but I'm confident the people of Yorkshire, like us, will rise to the challenge and do their bit to ensure the service is readily available when required.’

GEZE Steps Up to Charity Challenge

The UK supplier of door and window control systems, GEZE UK has taken part in a ‘Challenge Anneka’ style makeover for STEPS, a conductive education charity based in Leicestershire.

Inspired by patron Rosemary Conley, local companies including GEZE UK volunteered to take part in the highly complex renovation of St Botolph's Old School in Shepshed - with just two weeks to complete the centre. The challenge was screened on Central TV.

STEPS was set up for children with cerebral palsy and similar motor dysfunctions, to provide tailored education at St Botolph's Old School. Experts at GEZE UK, well versed in the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act legislation, were on hand to ensure that access to the centre was safe and compliant.

The company donated 20 of its popular TS 2000 door closers, to ensure the finish was stylish as well as practical. The TS 2000 has also been designed and tested to meet the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including Building Bulletin 93, Approved Documents B and M.

The disabled toilet was also fitted with a new slim cam closer, the TS 3000 B in white, which the company says is the slimmest surface mounted guide rail closer on the market. With a high specification, the TS 3000 B has an adjustable closing force, adjustable closing speed, adjustable hydraulic latching action and adjustable hydraulic back check. Developed and independently tested under laboratory conditions, the TS 3000 B can assist with the rigorous demands of the DDA.

As part of the second phase of development, GEZE UK will also be supplying a new Slimdrive EMD-F electro-mechanical swing door drive for hinged doors, which is virtually silent, for the entrance.

Ironmongery specialist Turentek provided all the hinges and handles for the doors at the centre. Paul Henstock, Turentek's managing director, invited GEZE UK to take part in the challenge. The school was extended and upgraded to improve the teaching area, kitchen and toilet facilities as well as providing a new entrance and reception area.

Rosemary Conley said: ‘I'm overwhelmed by the interest and support we have received from trades people. Everyone has been so generous! Thank you to everyone involved for making this happen.’

GEZE's Sales and Marketing Director, Jules Quested-Williams, said: ‘This challenge was a great opportunity for GEZE UK to give a little back to the community. The STEPS charity has a huge impact on the lives of disabled children in Leicestershire, so we were delighted to be involved. The TS 2000 door closers were the perfect choice to combine safety, practicality and design with ease.’
