Glass Industry Stalwart Celebrates Recovery from Cancer with Sponsored Swim

Phil Turley, glass and glazing sales manager at Kömmerling UK is celebrating his recovery from cancer with a sponsored swim. The event is taking place at three different pools during the week of Monday 17th October in Norwich and will be raising funds for The Big C, a local charity that supports sufferers of cancer and their families. Phil will be accompanied on the swim by approx 400 children, all members of the Sharks Swimming Club which he helps to run.

Commenting on the event, Phil said; ‘This time last year the thought of being able to get back in a swimming pool was just a dream. The support I have had from Kommerling and the health professionals, as well as friends and family has been fantastic. This is my way of saying thank you and ensuring that others in a similar position receive the support they need.’

Phil has been in the glass industry for over 20 years. It was in July 2004 that he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of cancer which affects the blood. He underwent a course of high dose chemotherapy and at the end of last year had a stem cell transplant. Since then his health has improved significantly and he is now able to undertake this challenge.

The Big C is Norfolk and North Suffolk's own local cancer charity. Having been established in 1980 by two young Norwich men who were having to travel to London to receive their treatment and wanted to make cancer facilities available in their local area, the charity is now celebrating its 25th Anniversary. Among the projects funded by the charity within these years are mobile breast screening units; treatment, equipment and staff at the three local hospitals in the region; a world class cancer research programme at the University of East Anglia; and the Big C Family Cancer Information & Support Centre currently being built at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Anyone interested in supporting Phil or making a donation should contact him at mailto:phil.turley@kommerlinguk.com. Alternatively cheques, made payable to The Big C Appeal can be sent direct to: The Big C Appeal, 10a Castle Meadow, Norwich, NR1 3DE, stating Phil Turley/Sharks Swimming Club Sponsored Swim.

Charity Begins at Show for Regent Windows

Regent Windows (South Wales) Ltd gave away a 3m x 3m conservatory in aid of Tenovus The Cancer Charity at the recent Pembrokeshire County Show which attracted a record attendance of 104,000 over three days in August.

Exhibiting at the popular agricultural show for the first time, the Haverfordwest-based WHS Halo fabricator featured two conservatories on its stand which drew considerable interest from visitors and raised over £400 for the charity.

A white, fully-glazed Victorian conservatory with double-pitched roof, donated to neighbouring exhibitors Tenovus for a charity auction prize, was won by Romeo Sarra, of Haverfordwest whose £4,120 guess was the nearest to the conservatory's £4,093 value.

Commenting on the show, Regent's Sales and Marketing Manager, Simon Apps says they were delighted with the response. 'We sold four conservatories at the show and have been busy ever since following up a lot of inquiries as a result of our presence there.

'We decided to give away a conservatory as an added attraction on our stand and offered it to the Tenovus cancer charity as they were exhibiting next to us. It was such a success that we have agreed to do another similar charity auction with them nationally.'

Regent's suppliers joined in the charity conservatory giveaway, with profile donated by WHS Halo, glazing supplied free from Crymych Glass and the roof provided by Crest Roofing, a local K2 distributor.

Mark Newbold from Tenovus, the regional appeals co-ordinator for West and Mid Wales, said: 'I am overwhelmed by the generosity of Regent Windows and it is so important to raise as much money as we can to help people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Currently one in three people will be affected by this dreadful disease and those odds are set to rise to one in two by the year 2020, so Tenovus is extremely grateful to Regent Windows for the company's help.'

Show organiser Gaynor Hamer confirmed the 104,000 attendance was the highest-ever in the show's 200-year history, adding that the figures had been boosted by marvellous weather throughout its duration.

Newstead Scores £500 Bull's-Eye for Donna Louise Trust

Adding to Newstead Trade Frame's charitable record, staff Kevin Bourne, Kevin Wright and Simon De-Winton recently raised £500 for the Donna Louise Trust by taking part in a 12 hour darts marathon.

Simon, Building Plastics Supervisor, who plays darts at a professional level, wanted to set a new record for a five man team scoring bulls-eyes and 25s non-stop - while raising money for charity. The event was so successful it was covered in Dart's World magazine.

‘This was a great chance to raise money for charity while doing something I love,’ Simon explains.

‘The Donna Louise Trust which provides respite and palliative care for children is self-supported and depends on voluntary contributions like this from the public. As a local charity, support from prominent companies like Newstead really makes a difference. I'm practising for next year already!’

Sash Garden Jewellery Re-Creates Wedding Chapel Fit for 'The King'

PVCu fabricator, Sash UK, was happy to lend its support to a local charity recently with the loan of a garden arbour for a 'Viva Las Vegas' themed event.

The Grimethorpe based company was approached by the Barnsley Hospice through a mutual business contact and asked to help the charity to recreate the infamous 'Little White Chapel', home of the 'traditional' Vegas-style wedding.

‘The arbour was ideal for the purpose. Event organisers decorated it and positioned it in the foyer of the hotel. It caused quite a stir. Guests especially enjoyed having their picture taken beneath it,’ said David Ruzicka, Joint Managing Director at Sash.

‘The arbour is part of a garden jewellery range, that also includes gazebo's and pergola's, that we are about to launch to complement our new range of fitrite decking and fencing. Although it is a relatively new product development for the company, we felt that it was a suitable venue to get early feedback on the product, at the same time, raising money for an excellent cause,’ he added.

The hospice held its annual summer ball to generate much needed funds for the specialist palliative care they offer to those within the local community who are affected by a life threatening illness.

'They chose the Las Vegas theme to add glitz and glamour to proceedings. ‘We wanted it to be as over-the-top as possible,’ said Sue Miller, Events Fundraiser for the Barnsley Hospice and organiser behind 'Viva Las Vegas'.

‘The arbour looked great and got a lot of attention, even more than Elvis... the impersonator that is! The event was a success with 200 guests in attendance and raised almost £5000. Thank you to Sash UK for its input,’ she added.

Ken Scales the Heights for Scope

After 23 years' experience in the window fabrication business, Eurocell customer Ayrshire Shopfronts Ltd's Director Ken McKenzie is no stranger to mountainous tasks!

But this September he'll be facing his biggest challenge yet, by taking part in an epic fund-raising venture.

As part of a 40-strong team, together with a friend he'll travel to the base of Mount Shishapangna, the highest mountain in Tibet and eighth highest in the world, and will climb to its base camp in a bid to raise funds for national cerebral palsy charity, Scope.

Ken's been on walking expeditions throughout the UK and Europe, but this is the first time he has tackled anything of this magnitude - the mountain being around 8,000m high, with the base camp at 5,135m and oxygen at approximately 50%.

'We read about the expedition in a mountaineering magazine and decided we'd like to take part,' said Ken.

'We've committed to raise £3,000 for this very worthy cause and the complete team should raise over £150,000.

'At the moment I'm just doing endurance and cardiovascular training in the gym and cycling, but nearer the time we'll start going for eight to ten-hour walks here in the Scottish Mountains.'

Eurocell will be sponsoring Ken during his mammoth feat, if you'd like to support him too you can contact him on 01563 542991.

A Roaring Donation from KAT UK

KAT UK, supplier of patio doors and sash windows, has made a £1,822 donation to Care for the Wild International (CFTWI) to aid the charity’s work in protecting wild tigers.

At the beginning of the year, an agreement was made with the charity for KAT UK to make a donation for every unit it sold.

KAT UK has used a tiger in its logo since 1998 and thought it appropriate and worthwhile to make CFTWI its nominated charity.

CFTWI has been working since 1995 to protect the tiger in India and has delivered over £100,000 to develop a variety of key projects.

KAT UK’s sales and marketing manager, Paul Randal, met with chief executive at CFWTI, Barbara Naas, to present the cheque.

Paul said: ‘We’re delighted to have been able to make such as substantial donation. It will help Care for the Wild International protect wild tigers by funding equipment, manpower and extra support for forest guards – several of whom are killed each year by poachers.’

Since it was founded CFTWI has provided 35 vehicles for anti-poaching teams working in India’s Tiger Reserves. Over £100,000 of equipment has been donated to date for the protection of the Bengal tiger including jeeps, motorcycles and motorboats, binoculars and cameras. CFTWI has also provided 192 forest guards in Rathambhore Tiger Reserve with insurance policies for life and sick cover.
