Derby Day for Timberlike

Timberlike Doors has been awarded with a prestigious honour from Derby City Council. At the 5th Annual Housing Investment Conference held at The Riverside Centre, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister praised Derby Homes (the City Councils Maintenance & Regeneration arm) for the work carried out in improving council estates in Derby.

All Local Authorities have been given until 2010 to bring their housing stock up to 'Decent Homes' standard. Derby City Council is on target to become the first authority in the country to reach that status by the end of 2005.

This has only been achieved by adhering to the true principles of partnering and working together. In recognition of supplying over 5,000 doors (to date) to an exacting specification and within tight delivery deadlines, Timberlike was delighted to receive the 'Homes Pride Supplier of the Year 2004' award.

Vince Mifsud, Timberlike Managing Director, was quick to recognise the part played by all of his staff. We carry out all of the surveys for Derby Homes and then turn all of its doors around within our 'industry-renowned' 10-day delivery period. I am pleased to accept this superb award on behalf of my very dedicated team. This could also not have been achieved without the professional way Derby Homes conducts itself.

Jeff Wells, Senior Contract Surveyor, said: 'Having previously used other door materials, Timberlike's solid core construction meets every part of our specification criteria. By working closely together we have achieved our completion promises to our tenants by giving forward visibility. Even when our plans have gone astray, Timberlike's friendly and flexible approach has meant that we have been able to overcome all obstacles'.

CertainTeed Corporation Awarded Consumers Digest ‘Best Buy’ for Bryn Mawr II™ Windows

CertainTeed Corporation, a North American manufacturer of building materials, was recently awarded a Consumers Digest ‘Best Buy’ for its Bryn Mawr II™ line of replacement windows. The Consumers Digest ‘Best Buy’ feature, which appeared in the magazine's October 2004 issue, rates windows based on construction, standard features, ease of operation and warranty.

A Consumers Digest ‘Best Buy’, defined as a product that offers outstanding value for its price, can be awarded to nationally-available products that Consumers Digest has identified as a great value in the marketplace, one that merits special attention from consumers. Consumers Digest ‘Best Buys’ are ranked within three different price ranges - premium, mid-range and economy.

The Bryn Mawr II line of windows is the only premium-priced vinyl replacement window recommended as a ‘Best Buy’ by Consumers Digest. ‘Being recognised by an independent authority for having a top-performing line of windows is an honour, and we are very pleased to receive the recognition,’ says Maria McDonagh-Forde, Marketing Manager for CertainTeed's Window Group. ‘The 'Best Buy' seal confirms that the Bryn Mawr II line of windows is a high-quality product and an excellent value for the money.’

Studies have shown that nearly 70 percent of consumers purchased a product based on the ‘Best Buy’ seal. Only three out of every 100 products reviewed by Consumers Digest have the quality and value to earn the ‘Best Buy’ seal. Other companies awarded the ‘Best Buy’ seal include BMW, John Deere, Ford, Hoover, Nokia and Whirlpool.

‘Bryn Mawr II windows combine innovative design, long-lasting performance, great looks, and superior thermal efficiency and cost efficiency. The classic styling of Bryn Mawr II windows complements home designs from traditional to contemporary.’ says the company.

Michael Rigby Associates Scoops Prestigious Agency of the Year Title in 2004 Construction Marketing Awards

Fact-based PR and marketing specialist Michael Rigby Associates (MRA) was announced Agency of the Year in The Construction Marketing Awards 2004 in London earlier this month.

The awards are organised by EMAP Construction Network and supported by CIMCIG (Chartered Institute of Marketing Construction Industry Group). The Award for Agency of the Year was open to any agency within the sector, whether advertising, business development or PR that has performed for clients, changed perceptions and made a measurable difference. Tracy Collins, Head of Events at Emap commented: ‘The prestigious Awards, now in their fourth year, are universally recognised as a unique and highly regarded measure of excellence in construction marketing and business development. Entrants for Agency of the Year had to demonstrate how they have built successful relationships with their clients, as well as proving how they strive to understand and work with clients to develop a measurable, relevant brief with clearly defined deliverables. Michael Rigby Associates not only fulfilled the criteria, but also proved the value of strategic planning and performance measurement. They proved how they consistently deliver successful results - time and time again.’

Fiona Lund, Business Development Director adds: ‘Although measuring results and demonstrating that PR works is still unusual in the building industry, it has become a major issue and objective in marketing and PR. It is now recognised that demonstrating success through measurement is the new best practice, and agencies are being urged to do it. Clients need to know that PR does work, and does contribute directly to growth and profitability which is exactly what we aim to do. Receiving this award, especially on our first attempt is a superb third party endorsement of this approach.’

Pilkington Picks up Major Engineering Award

Pilkington plc has won an important award under the prestigious Engineering Heritage Hallmark Scheme (EHHS) for the invention of the Float Glass process. The award, presented by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), which has Her Majesty The Queen as its patron, describes Float as ‘the major glass innovation of the 20th Century’ which has had ‘enormous’ social impact. ‘Almost all the glass that the public sees or looks through today is Float Glass,’ says the impressive citation.

The IMechE launched the EHHS in 1984 to recognise landmark developments in mechanical engineering and to raise the profile of the profession. Only 36 awards have been made so far and previous winners include the Harrier jump jet, the Rolls Royce RB 211 engine, the Thames Barrier and the Jubilee Extension Line. The Float Glass process was invented by Pilkington in St Helens in 1952 and announced to the world in 1959 after seven years of secret development work.

The process is now the world standard for the manufacture of high quality glass production, with some 300 float plants in operation, under construction or planned around the world.

Pilkington plc Group Chief Executive, Stuart Chambers (Left) accepting the Engineering Heritage Hallmark award from the President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, William Edgar, CBE.

Pilkington Group Chief Executive, Stuart Chambers, received the EHHS plaque from IMechE President William Edgar CBE at a special presentation ceremony at the company’s St Helens HQ on 22nd November.

Commenting on the award, Mr Chambers said: ‘This award is really a credit to all those Pilkington engineers, and production employees, who worked on the Float Glass project over weeks, months and years without ever knowing whether it would be a success. Their commitment to an objective, despite the set backs on the way, was genuinely outstanding and reflects the best traditions of British engineering.’

Largest Scheme to Use Technal’s New Door System Wins RIBA Award

Raines Court, one of the largest schemes to incorporate Technal’s new GXi aluminium sliding balcony door, has won an RIBA Award. This pioneering project – the UK’s largest modular housing development and the first to be offered for sale – has also been shortlisted for two British Construction Industry Awards – the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award and the Building Award in the £3-50m category.

Developed by Peabody Trust, the apartments were manufactured and fully fitted out in York by Yorkon and designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris.
Raines Court was described in the RIBA judges’ report as ‘powerful and uncompromising…..The revelation is of a very well considered and agreeable ambience for urban living…..The balconies are really large….the apartments themselves are fine, work well and have good views within and without.’

Built to Housing Corporate standards, the scheme occupies the site of a former dairy in Stoke Newington. The design ethos for the project was to use high quality, low maintenance materials and products, which are strong and highly durable to maximise longevity. Each apartment module incorporates an integral entrance ‘court’ for access and balcony to the front elevation, which is glazed using the new GXi sliding balcony door.

Technal’s FXi46 casement windows were specified in a tilt/turn configuration where the units could not be cleaned from the outside. Top hung casements were used where the windows could be accessed from balconies or walkways. Both the windows and the balcony doors were pre-installed before the apartment modules left the factory.

GXi is a robust and high specification sliding window and balcony door, which has been developed by Technal for apartments and prestige office schemes. It was used at Raines Court to maximise natural light, giving each apartment a spacious feel, and to allow access to a private balcony.

Externally, Raines Court has a ‘chequerboard’ appearance, emphasised with the use of colour. Each apartment has its own colour for the entrance door and cladding panels, selected from a palette of shades of blue and green with splashes of yellow. This contrasts successfully with the dark grey windows and patio doors, and the zinc cladding.

The glazing fabricator was Securefront Systems.

Second K2 Dealer Achieves Industry Award

K2 dealer Spectra Conservatory Roofs Ltd has gained BBA accreditation; guaranteeing the company's roofs are precisely designed and fabricated to the highest industry standards.

Spectra is the second K2 dealer to have achieved this award in the last two months, and is the only K2 BBA Certified fabricator in the South West.

Spectra gained accreditation by the BBA after undergoing a six-month strict assessment of its fabrication and manufacturing processes, as well as the performance of its roofs after fabrication. The company was also assessed on all aspects of its documentation, systems and procedures, including sales and administration systems, as well as its training and development procedures.

Spectra was founded two years ago in the south-west of England, with the aim of creating a company which would provide high quality products, as well as an exemplary customer service ethic. The company has increased its fabrication capacity to more than 35 roofs a week, including expanding its premises to deal with the increased demand, since the company's creation in September 2002.

Spectra credits a major part of its success as a fabricator and its achievement of BBA accreditation to K2's roof system products, which enable the company to provide build quality to its customers. The fabricator also cites K2's service and support as key factors in helping it build its reputation, as it is able to pass on the benefits of technical support and prompt delivery to its customers.

Darren Goddard of Spectra comments: 'This award is thoroughly deserved by all our staff who consistently deliver the high standards necessary to achieve the BBA Accreditation.

'At Spectra, we believe in giving a service that is second to none and unrivalled by our competitors in the south-west. This BBA accreditation is an independent guarantee that we can provide customers with the best possible quality product and service and ensures they will return to use our services time and again'.

Paul Carter, Sales Manager of K2 comments: 'We would like to congratulate Spectra on its growth and success in achieving BBA accreditation.
'We are very proud that yet another K2 dealer has achieved this universally recognised award. K2 believes in providing a quality product and impeccable service and we are delighted to supply our product to a fabricator who so clearly shares our aims'.

Three Edgetech Customers Achieve BS1279 Part 2 – the Benchmark for Sealed Unit Manufacturers

Edgetech customers Senator Windows, Mcllhatton and Co. Ltd and Holdens Supaseal have recently achieved BS1279 Part 2 – three of numerous Edgetech customers to have achieved the standard so far. This important standard tests moisture penetration in sealed units. The procedure involves the units being stored in relative humidity for at least 14 days, during which time they are measured for length, width and thickness. The thickness of each glass pane was assessed and the cavity thickness evaluated. The units are then subjected to a dew point measurement test, moisture penetration test, moisture content and climatic test. All three companies wanted to meet the standard for their specifier and architect customers.

Managing Director of Mcllhatton’s, Paddy Mcllhatton enthuses: ‘We always knew we manufactured high quality, performance units, but it’s good to have this reassurance for customers. I was 100% more confident our unit would pass with Super Spacer® than if we were using any other spacer bar.’

Senator Windows wanted the standard when it started manufacturing its own sealed units. Keith Ogilvie, Quality Manager explains: ‘Approximately 20% of our 1,200 units are exported from our factory in Southern Ireland to Northern Ireland and Welsh Local Authorities. For a market so obsessed with quality, it was important we achieved this standard.’

Holdens Supaseal has been manufacturing sealed units for 35 years. ‘We have always had quality standards to back up our products,’ explains Alan Pearce, General Manager of Holdens Supaseal. ‘We recognise it’s important for our customers to have independent reassurance that our products are of the highest quality. We had every confidence that our window would pass Part 2 of CEN1279 because of our focus on quality and because we use Edgetech’s Super Spacer bar which is an all round excellent product.’

Unusual Application of Technal’s Glazing Systems Wins Award for Design Excellence

The Golden Jubilee Wing at King’s College Hospital in London has won Technal a major industry award for design excellence. An unusual application of curtain walling for a healthcare project, the new wing features a fully glazed curved façade created using 2000 sqm of Technal’s MC Trame Horizontale curtain walling.

Designed by Nightingale Associates and developed by a Costain/Skanska consortium, this £76m PFI scheme for King’s Healthcare NHS Trust has won the Public Private Finance Award 2004 for the Best Designed Project across all sectors.
The awards are an annual celebration of achievements in the delivery of exceptional public facilities and services, rewarding innovation, commitment to design and recognising projects that are making a significant contribution to our local communities.

The new wing at King’s College Hospital provides patients with facilities that encourage healing and aid swift recovery. Staff also benefit from working in first class accommodation. The development, which is built on a constrained and challenging site, facilitates patient access and has created a calm and attractive environment for healthcare.

The north-facing elevation is fully glazed in Technal’s MC Trame facetted curtain walling which spans four storeys to give maximum daylight, space planning flexibility and to allow views across London from the upper floors. The aerofoil MC Trame cap runs across the façade providing horizontal emphasis and was also used to form an arrow head return at the extreme ends of the glazed screen to add interest and accentuate the curve.

‘The MC Trame system fitted in with the scale of the building and allowed us to have a bold façade for the new wing, which has impact and a distinctive visual appearance’, said David Cannon, Project Director at Nightingale Associates.

He added, ‘The curtain walling is facetted to produce a gentle curve – a much more cost-effective solution than curved glass. The arrow head fins finish off the curtain walling and the concealed windows help to naturally ventilate the building.’

An opaque square pattern is etched onto the glazed spandrel panels to conceal services between floors. The design has a different appearance in different light conditions, creating a range of effects and a changing façade. Fabricated and installed by St Gobain Solaglas, the curtain walling was glazed in smoked grey tinted glass to reduce glare and carries around 200 top hung concealed windows from Technal’s MC suite to provide natural ventilation.

The MC Trame curtain walling suite gives specifiers the option of highlighting the horizontal or vertical lines across the building envelope for a more interesting and dynamic appearance.
