Re-new
Glass Wins Innovation Award
Glass
restoration specialist Re-new Glass
has won the Innovation Award in the prestigious Thames Valley Business
Magazine Awards. The award is given for a business, which 'demonstrates
creativity in the type of innovation, in the way it is implemented and
in the use of the appropriate skills to bring it to reality.
Re-new Glass uses advanced technology to restore flat glass in situ,
removing scratches, graffiti and even adhered building materials and
debris. The process is much in demand in the retail and construction
industries in particular where it saves thousands of pounds by avoiding
the need to replace glass. As well as being highly effective, the technology
is clean, safe and environmentally friendly.
In a bid to provide a total glazing solution, Re-new additionally offers
resin repairs and application of specialist films and polymeric coatings,
which improve aesthetics and reduces maintenance. The service is provided
nationwide.
Managing Director Bob Griffin says: The nominees came from a wide
range of industries and we expected the winner to be something rather
more glamorous than glass restoration so we were really thrilled to
win.
Glamour may be lacking but success clearly is not.Since its inception
in 2001, Re-new has grown steadily and is the only UK company licensed
to use its state of the art technology. Bob Griffin says: Initially,
people were sceptical about the process but we have always won business
where we have been given an opportunity to demonstrate the process and
those early sceptics are now regular customers.
The Thames Valley Business Magazine Awards recognise the achievements
of outstanding businesses in the Thames Valley area and are open to
all sizes and types of business. The Innovation award, which is sponsored
by Slough Estates is only one of six categories.

PAS
23/24 Approval for New Look Windows
Rochdale-based
New Look Windows has been awarded
PAS 23/24 and Secured by Design approval on its PVC-U residential door
in the REHAU S706 70mm system.
New Look is one of the few companies to have achieved the security standard
on a PVC-U rather than a composite door and expects the award to help
it drive sales throughout the trade, retail and commercial sectors.
Walter Lopacki, Managing Director of New Look, says: Our door
in the REHAU 70mm system with a Winkhaus locking mechanism is a popular
choice in all our key markets because it is attractive, cost effective
and easy to fit.
However, with the added endorsement of these independent security
assessments, I expect it to have a particular impact amongst social
housing providers in the commercial market.
New Look currently produces between 40 and 50 doors per week and can
offer short lead times to trade and commercial customers. It has the
capacity to increase volumes as sales increase.
The company already holds Secured by Design approval on a casement window
fabricated in the REHAU S706 system.

Trojan
Receives Official Recognition of its Flagship Product's Quality
Trojan
Hardware and Design
is celebrating the news that one of the companys flagship products,
the Stallion 2 Shootbolt, has just been awarded a BBA (British Board
of Agrément) Certificate. Paul Judd, Trojan's Technical Manager,
commented, We're delighted to have attained the certification
on the Stallion 2 Shootbolt because it's testament to our ethos as a
company. We put a lot of work into ensuring that the design and manufacturing
quality of every one of our products is the best it possibly can be.
This is reflected in this achievement.
BBA Certificates are only awarded after rigorous assessment and are
recognised by specifiers and other decision-makers as an indication
of quality, so Trojan can be justly proud. The Stallion 2 Shootbolt's
assessment took around six weeks to complete and included salt spray
and cycle tests to test its durability. The Shootbolt successfully underwent
240 hours of salt spray testing and consequently was awarded BS EN 1670:1998
Class 4.
The usual security test, which requires the product to achieve BS7950,
was waived during this assessment, though. Why? Because the Stallion
2 Shootbolt's reputation preceded it. Having previously achieved the
accreditation as part of numerous other uPVC door and window products
and being a licensed Secured By Design product, the BBA were satisfied
the Shootbolt would meet standards.
Trojan Hardware and Design's Stallion 2 Shootbolt is designed for Eurogroove
systems. Its construction is largely stainless steel and features benefits
including a unique clip in action to the Eurogroove, an automatic self
setting action that sets the shootbolt at the required length and rising
locking cams that maximise engagement as well as frame clearance.

An
Abbott Achievement
The
Abbott Group has achieved the coveted
Secured By Design mark following a rigorous technical evaluation on
the company's window and door products. The specification has been developed
for products that can demonstrate effective crime prevention and enhanced
security standards.
Research has shown that Secured by Design can reduce burglary by 50%
and car crime and criminal damage by 25%. For the house builder this
means that every Abbott product has been designed with crime prevention
and security in mind and that this has now been recognised by the achievement
of Secured By Design.

Calvin
Beckford, regional development officer from Secured by Design presenting
the certificate to the directors and management team of the Abbott Group.
Jim
Wakefield, sales and marketing director of Abbott Group comments: This
is great news for Abbott and its valued customers. Credit has to be
given to those involved in the project and this will give further evidence
to the house builder of our commitment to developing the finest range
of products available. Well done everyone!
Following the achievement of this mark, the company has been quick to
develop a dedicated micro-site and a certificate of conformance for
home owners. The micro-site has been developed to promote the certification
and to highlight to house builders about the importance of security
in the home. Log on to www.abbott-group.co.uk for a direct link to the
micro-site.
Jim concludes: We are always keen to invest in marketing initiatives
and the micro site combined with the certificate of conformance is yet
a further example of our pro-active approach to the house building market.
Judging by our sales performance this year, it is certainly working.

Trojan
and Aluplast Slimline Success
Trojan
Hardware and Designs
is celebrating another British Standards accreditation for one of the
companys products. Aluplast (UK) Ltd's Ideal 60 SA42CF slimline
featured sash has achieved BS7950 using Trojan's slimline off-set shootbolt.
Aluplast,
whose UK headquarters are in Lutterworth, Leicestershire, had the accreditation
presented to the company by its local Conservative MP, Mr Andrew Robathan.
Commercial Director of Aluplast, Alan Fielder, had contacted Mr Robathan
in support of the current Edgetech campaign for reduced Vat on energy
efficient windows.
As a result, Mr Robathan had confirmed his support to the campaign and
expressed a view in visiting Aluplast to learn more about the energy
efficient products. He was delighted to present the certificate to Aluplast
which indicates both the esteem in which such accreditations are held,
as well as Aluplast's pride in the companys achievement.
Paul Judd of Trojan said of Aluplast's accreditation: We're obviously
delighted for Aluplast and congratulate the company on its success.
We're also delighted that the company, like many of our customers, is
confident enough in its own products, and our hardware, to seek accreditation.
Such awards take a lot of time and hard work to achieve, so we feel
it's a testament to the quality of our products that they're happy to
embark on the journey.
The certification is one of many Trojan Hardware and Design has received
for its products recently. The company is renowned for its handles,
hinges and shootbolts, all of which offer innovation, superior design
and operational performance.
Trojan's flagship product, the Stallion 2 shootbolt, is a licensed Secured
By Design product. Trojan prides itself on having a product solution
for most window and door systems and says that its products are the
first choice for companies that take the quality and performance of
their products seriously.

Solar's
Commitment To Diversity Recognised At House Of Lords
Solar
Windows'
commitment to equal opportunities and employer diversity has been recognised
at an awards ceremony held recently at the House of Lords.
Bob Jenkins, Business Development Manager for Solar, received a certificate
from Lord Ahmed of Rotherham to mark the commercial fabricator's completion
of the QED-UK Employer Diversity Project.
This project, delivered in conjunction with Jobcentre Plus, aims to
improve the employment prospects of ethnic minorities in eight designated
areas of England and Wales. 257 businesses expressed an interest, 85
made submissions and Caerphilly-based Solar was one of just 27 which
received formal recognition of their outstanding commitment to improving
the ethnic diversity of their workforce.
Bob Jenkins said: The importance of our staff to our business
can't be underestimated as we develop our business through our people.
Part of that development is to make sure that they understand where
we are going and this project has helped us to focus on that and to
look at our responsibilities jointly.
In the public sector in particular where Solar Windows operates,
it is vital to be able to demonstrate a socially responsible outlook
and a commitment to our community. We are constantly looking at ways
in which we can improve our performance and by embracing this initiative,
I think we have taken another major step towards that.
Solar Windows fabricates in REHAU's S706 70mm system and is a leading
supplier to the commercial sector.
Blankfort
Passes Q-Mark Fire Door Audit with Flying Colours
BM
TRADA Q-Mark fire door scheme member Baillargeon
Doors Inc of Quebec has passed its annual surveillance audit
without a single non-conformance. Furthermore, it has achieved exactly
the same pass result in the audit test, demanded by Q-Mark, for the
Blankfort door blanks covered by the scheme as it achieved in the initial
type test when it became a Q-Mark member eight years ago.
According to Chiltern International Fire Test Engineer Mark Cummings,
who carried out the audit test this month, 'This underlines the absolute
consistency of production of the Blankfort product, which again performed
very well in the test.
Blankfort door blanks have been selling in the UK and the Middle
East for more than 10 years, said UK agent and technical consultant
Bob Williamson. The Q-Mark has been an important marketing tool for
Blankfort, he added, especially as architects and other specifiers are
now recognising Blankfort door blanks as 'technical products that provide
solutions'.
Instead of being tied to a range of standard fire doors, Blankfort can
be specified and then accessed by joinery manufacturers as well as specialist
door manufacturers. The fact that the Q-Mark is well established in
other markets such as Dubai is another strong selling point.
Blankfort fire doors blanks are manufactured from laminated softwood
cores with particleboard and/or MDF faces and are available with 30-minute
and 60-minute fire resistance, both covered by the Q-Mark scheme. Blankfort
is currently the only laminated softwood-cored door blank product available
to the joinery and specialist door sectors, now with the added benefit
of Q-Mark certification.
The BM TRADA Q-Mark Timber Fire Door Scheme is a third-party certification
scheme for fire door and door blank manufacturers, fabricators and installers,
which demands consistency of production, usually achieved through a
factory production control (FPC) system complying with ISO 9001:2000
or equivalent. Regular factory audits are a necessary part of membership,
as is audit fire testing of products randomly selected from the production
line.

Arden
Secures a Superior Solution from Groupco
Fuhr
Multisafe door locks from hardware distributor Groupco
have helped a new Secured by Design range of timber doors from Arden
Windows obtain PAS 23 / 24 approval in record time.
Arden
Windows' Director, Simon Badham, believes Fuhr's multipoint locking
system, plus Groupco's technical advice and support, played a key role
in achieving the stringent security and performance standard in just
six weeks.
We buy a lot of our hardware from Groupco and they recommended
the Fuhr 856 for our new Stratford doorsets. It's a top quality product
that's easy to fit it so it met our specification for simplicity and
security perfectly and the doors sailed through the tests at the UKAS
accredited centre.
Arden's Stratford 56mm single timber residential and double French doorsets
are available in a wide range of styles and glazing options. Sidelights
can be added as required.
An ideal choice for the new collection, the Multisafe 856 hook lock
is one of Fuhr's most popular domestic products in the UK. The lever
operated, multipoint locking system used on the single residential and
French master offers a high level of security and is quick and simple
to install.
The system selected for the Stratford double doorset also includes Fuhr's
841 French door locking System. This ingenious product is a two-part
steel U rail which incorporates adjustable striker plates for the master
lock and concealed reverse action shootbolts operated from a single
lever.
For additional security the shootbolts can only be disengaged when the
master door is open.
PAS 23 covers a range of general performance criteria including weather
resistance and basic security, whereby products are subjected to a 50,000
cycle test to assess the durability of the door leaf, frame, hinges
and locks. PAS 24 relates to enhanced security levels including hard/soft
body impact, mechanical load tests and the ability to withstand manual
attack.
PAS 23 / 24 is an important standard within the door market, particularly
in the new build and public sectors. Coventy-based Arden Windows supplies
doors and windows to all areas of the building industry, including housebuilders,
local authorities and housing associations, so a high specification
is vital to winning contracts, says Simon Badham.
'Our Stratford range represents real value for money in a highly competitive
market and will ensure Arden remains as a market leader in timber windows
and doors. Combined with the Fuhr Multisafe 856/841 locking system the
doors satisfy the industry's most stringent standards and are set to
be a top selling line in our range.

Corby
Coatings Company Paints the Town Red
Corby's
Spraylat International has been
crowned the winner in the Northamptonshire section of UK Trade &
Investment's Passport to Export Awards 2006.
The industrial coating and paint spraying company earned its accolade
after strengthening relationships with overseas buyers in Germany, Turkey,
Southern Ireland, Sweden, America, Finland, South Africa and Australia
with help from UK Trade & Investment's Passport to Export scheme.
Passport to Export offers a year's worth of tailored advice and expertise,
which gives companies new to the export market all the tools they need
to flourish overseas.
Jon Caswell, Managing Director of Spraylat, said,
'We're absolutely thrilled and also very surprised to get this award!
Passport to Export has also been a useful research tool and played an
important part in our ongoing export success. It has encouraged us to
tailor our products to suit the market. Spraylat started to export to
the boat industry in Florida in July 2005 and UK Trade & Investment
helped us to really focus and identify strengths and weaknesses within
that market.'
Peter Hogarth, UK Trade & Investment's International Trade Director
in the East Midlands, said,
'These Passport to Export awards are all about celebrating the success
of the region's exporters. And this year we have a great deal to celebrate
- exports of goods from the East Midlands have increased by £1bn
compared to the same period last year, an increase well ahead of the
national average.
'This a well-deserved accolade for Spraylat, whose export turnover has
doubled from approximately £168k last year, to a projected quarter
of a million this year. The award is also a testament to the East Midlands
team here at UK Trade & Investment, whose expertise has played a
part in a local company's success abroad.'

Volkswagen
Crafter Claims What Van? Van of the Year Award
Volkswagen's
recently-launched large panel van, the Crafter, has claimed
the top award at the prestigious What Van? Van of the Year Awards. The
Crafter also won the Large Panel Van award, while the Caddy with DSG
gearbox clinched the Technology award.
A strong engine line-up, a major emphasis on safety, a huge range and
standard six-speed manual gearbox all contributed to the judges' decision.
In summing up, they said: 'The Crafter represents the pinnacle of current
large panel van design and drivetrain implementation.'
The largest van in the Volkswagen range, the Crafter is designed and
built to meet the ever-increasing demands of a modern load carrier.
It comes with a choice of four five-cylinder engines, delivering 88,
109, 136 or 163 PS, all offering fuel efficiency and low emissions.
A six-speed manual gearbox is fitted as standard, although an automated
manual transmission is optional.
Inside, the Crafter's spacious cabin is ergonomically designed for comfortable
and safe driving. Features include a dash-mounted gear lever, excellent
storage space and a driver's airbag fitted as standard. Three wheelbases,
four load compartment lengths and three roof heights boost the Crafter
panel van's versatility. The Crafter range is further enhanced by the
availability of a window van (mid 2007), chassis cab and double cab.
The Crafter has a maximum load capacity of 17 cubic metres, and the
five tonne MWB panel van can carry a weight of approximately 2,630 kg.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also claimed the Technology award for
its revolutionary double clutch DSG gearbox which is available as an
option on the Caddy van. The judges commented: 'For several years manufacturers
have been searching for an alternative to the conventional manual gearbox
in a bid to make the lives of drivers on stop-start delivery work in
city centres a bit easier. Some manufacturers have offered conventional
automatic boxes as an option. Some have offered automated manual transmissions.
... But none of them have come up with a 'box that's as technically
elegant - or as enjoyable to use - as Volkswagen's six-speed DSG; the
winner of What Van?'s Technology Award for 2006.'
Commenting on the company's successes, Ralf Schueler, Volkswagen Commercial
Vehicles' Head of Marketing said: 'We're delighted that our products
have been recognised by What Van? in these awards. We strive to offer
our customers the best products to enable them to run their businesses
successfully. At the same time, we continue to offer them the very highest
standards of customer service to keep them on the road.'
This news came in the week that Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles broke
the 24,000 unit barrier, surpassing last year's total sales in just
ten and a half months and setting a sixth consecutive record for the
brand.

Another
Win for New World and Ace Fixings
As
an industry hot spot, there is fierce competition for Northern Irelands
Ballymena Borough Council annual awards. Topping the Marketing and Business
Innovation section in 05, this year New
World won the category Best Business Growth. The success
of the company has been obvious in the steady month by month increase
in trading for its Apeer and Monno composite doorsets as well as door
panels. Up 39% on last year, New World says that it has a reputation
for consistently high quality products and service.
Ace
Fixings won the Excellence in Business Practice category. This year
it has not only launched a new website, but introduced a new integrated
mobile management IT solution, via a PDA, so that the sales team can
process orders immediately.
Managing director Austin McGillian explains 'We are a great team and
we always look for the best from our staff and our products. Both companies
deserve these accolades and were looking forward to more success
in the future.'
New World was founded out of Ace Fixings and its knowledge of the glazing
industry in the UK and Ireland. Apeer and Monnos qualities of
kerbside appeal, endurance and security features have ensured
their best seller status in both Ireland and the UK.
Previous awards have been the regional Department of Trade and Industry
prize for IT initiatives and the short-listing by the Charted Institute
of Marketing, particularly for PanelSpec. This online ordering programme

Locks
of Celebrations
Both
Trojan Hardware and Selecta
Systems have cause to celebrate. Selecta Systems is celebrating
achieving BS7950 accreditation - the approved specification for enhanced
security performance - on the companys casement windows. And Trojan
is celebrating because Selecta's casement windows utilised the companys
Stallion 2 shootbolt which played a significant part in achieving the
performance standard.
Mark
Walker, Quality Manager at Selecta Systems said: We're delighted
we've achieved the accreditation utilising the Stallion 2 shootbolt.
It is a fantastic product and probably the best shootbolt system on
the market. Top quality, strong and durable hardware is fundamental
because the windows need to withstand the rigorous testing they undergo
as part of the assessment process. Having first hand experience of working
with Trojan's products, the decision to use the Stallion 2 shootbolt
was obviously a good one and demonstrated yet again the value of our
four-year relationship with Trojan.
The Stallion 2 shootbolt has become a reputable product for Trojan and
is recognised as one of the most competent shootbolts available. It
offers benefits including fast fitting thanks to a pre-assembled telescopic
design, a clip-in action to the Eurogroove and an automatic self-setting
action. Its largely stainless steel construction makes it robust and
corrosion-resistant too - it achieved 1000 hours Salt Spray resistance
under BS EN 1670:1998 test conditions. Suitable for sash rebates from
300mm to 1750mm, it also offers Secure by Design accreditations.
Trojan Hardware and Design was established in 1996. Since then, it has
developed a reputation for offering fabricators high quality, innovative
products. Mark Walker commented: We've been working with Trojan
for over four years and we couldn't be happier with the relationship.
The companys commitment to providing a top quality product matches
our own business ethos. We also appreciate Trojans down to earth
approach because it makes the company very easy to do business with.
In addition to the Stallion 2 shootbolt, Selecta also offers Trojan's
Patriot hinge along with its Reverse Espagnolette.

Sheerframe's
Reversible Performance 'Secures' BSI Kitemarks
The
Sheerframe fully reversible windows from L.B.
Plastics have achieved approval under BS 7412 and BS 7950,
following BSI's decision to extend security testing to this popular
window style.
Securing
these all important kitemarks on build and operational quality and enhanced
security allows L.B. Plastics to offer the same independent assurance,
on the performance of Sheerframe top reversibles, as the rest of its
window range.
Under BS 7412 all aspects of the window's manufacture, including window
construction, safety, operation, strength and weather tightness are
tested thoroughly.
This standard is required for the window to be tested under BS 7950,
the specification for enhanced security performance for domestic windows.
Under BS 7950, which is vital under the Secured by Design scheme, the
window is subjected to a series of simulated attacks and certification
is awarded following satisfactory performance.
David Strang, Sheerframe Product Director, says, We knew that
Sheerframe top reversible windows offered exceptional performance and
security, and these approvals formalise that. When BSI extended the
BS 7950 testing to include reversible design's we saw this as an opportunity
to assure our customers further that Sheerframe offers safe, secure,
high quality windows.'
We are delighted with both accreditations and to be one of the
first manufacturers to receive the BS 7950 on our reversible designs.
Sheerframe's top reversible windows are fitted with the Sheer turn hinge
which allows the windows to open out traditionally retaining the advantages
of a casement but the innovative design allows the window to reverse
for safer cleaning from the inside of the property.
Sheerframe's side reversible window use similar hardware but allow the
window to open on a horizontal axis, giving over a 90% open area and
is often used to comply with fire egress requirements.
For more information on the Sheerframe windows range, please visit the
website at http://www.sheerframe.co.uk
GBW
Performance Recognised
GBW,
the UK door panel and composite door manufacturer, has recently won
an award from plastics distribution specialist Window Fitter's Mate.
'Best Panel Supplier of the Year' was awarded based on GBW's performance
on supplying a range of door panels across the UK. Votes were taken
from all 25 branches of Window Fitter's Mate in order to determine the
overall winner; votes were based on delivery speed, quality and accuracy.
John Ward, Managing Director of GBW commented, 'We were delighted when
we were informed on the news, we have had a 10 year supply relationship
with Window Fitter's Mate and we have both worked hard together in order
