Total
Glass gets SBD Accreditation
Liverpool-based
Total Glass has recently achieved
Secured by Design (SBD) status on its comprehensive range of PVC-U casement
and tilt n turn windows.
Secured by Design is the UK Police flagship initiative supporting the
principles of 'designing out crime' and backs one of the Government's
key planning objectives - the creation of secure, quality places where
people wish to live and work. It sets out to identify standards and
evaluations that test the competence of security products and hardware
and their resistance to criminal attack.
Commenting on obtaining the accreditation, Frank Deary, Total Glass
Managing Director, says: 'We're delighted and proud to announce we have
achieved Secured by Design status on our windows. Secured by Design
is well recognised and respected throughout the building industry as
a benchmark for quality. Achieving formal SBD recognition underlines
further our on-going commitment to security and product quality.'
For our installing customers, SBD certification brings additional benefits
as homeowners are increasingly looking for products which meet the Police
Preferred Specification standards. According to recent police research,
Secured by Design has been shown to reduce burglary by up to 50%.
This is a reassuring statistic that can be passed onto consumers, increasing
their confidence and reassurance in the product's security and performance,
as well as opening up greater selling opportunities for our customers,'
adds Frank. 'On the commercial side, as a Secured by Design licence
holder we can offer window products, manufactured to the highest quality
and security standards, bearing the industry-recognised status that
specifiers and end users demand.'
With over 17 years experience, Total Glass supplies a wide range of
PVC-U windows and doors, fabricated using top quality Profile 22, 70mm
fully sculptured profile, plus a broad selection of conservatory roof
solutions. Its comprehensive product range is backed with tailored customer
and marketing support packages to help every customer grow their business.

Banaglaze
and P&P Glass Cash in on Kitemarks with £500 from Masterframe
Two
Bygone Preferred Installers (BPIs), Banaglaze and P&P Glass, have
achieved BSI Kitemark status for the survey and installation of windows
& doors - and £500 each from Masterframe
for their efforts. Managing Director Alan Burgess has offered all BPIs
a cash incentive to make the network the most qualified group of installers
in the industry.
Buckinghamshire BPI Banaglaze Window Systems met the requirements of
the BSI Kitemark scheme for the survey and installation of windows and
doors in just five weeks last October 2005. We already had most
of the recommended procedures in place, says Banaglaze's owner
Ian Leigh, but having BSI status differentiates us. Masterframe's
£500 is a mark of recognition and an acknowledgement of our professional
service we give our customers.
Surrey-based P&P Glass was audited by a BSI inspector in November
2005. Managing Director Tom Scanlan gives further details: We
had to prove we work to a quality plan and deliver a consistently high
level of service. Risk assessment and health and safety checking procedures
were also examined, as well as training and the measures in place to
log customer services and complaints. We'll be monitored twice a year
to make sure we keep standards up.
Very few window companies in the country have achieved Kitemark
status, continues Tom. It gives us an edge over the competition.
Masterframe's support was much appreciated - if our other suppliers
were half as generous we could have made a profit on the scheme!

Performing Super Spacer® Achieves Six Firsts in the Window Energy
Ratings
With
six firsts under its belt, Edgetech UK says
that its Super Spacer® is a star performer of the Window Energy
Ratings.
The company says that the Warm edge technology Super Spacer helped Piper
Double Glazing achieve the first 'A' rated window, with a BFRC rating
of 4 kWh/m2/yr. This was a triple first, as it was the first PVC-U 'A'
rating, and the first triple glazed window rated too. Tradelink swiftly
followed with the first double glazed 'A. Now we have a choice
of materials too, with the first timber 'A' rated window from George
Barnsdale and Sons, and the first aluminium A from Hazlemere. And they
all used Super Spacer® to secure their top ratings.
The elite band of companies with 'A' ratings are capitalising
on their achievements with increased orders and premiums, states
Andy Jones. But the industry cannot rest on its laurels now: we
need to work together to promote the WER, lobby Government and develop
the end-user market further.

Pennine
Passes Thanks to Trojan
LB
fabricator, Pennine Home Improvements,
has extended its existing BS7950 accreditation to include the new Stallion
2 shootbolt designed and manufactured by Trojan Hardware. BS7950 accreditation
is the approved specification for enhanced security performance of casement
and tilt/turn windows for domestic applications.
Brian Perry, Managing Director at Pennine Home Improvements said: We
have used Trojan Hardware for some time, with considerable success.
We adopted the companys new Stallion 2 shootbolt as it offers
fabricators some fantastic benefits including a very high performing
product. The quality of the shootbolt was crucial in retaining BS7950
accreditation, demonstrating the excellence of Trojan's hardware.

Paul

Improvements, Brian Perry
The
Stallion 2 shootbolt from Trojan was introduced by the company earlier
this year. It operates under a similar ethos to the popular Stallion
1 shootbolt, but with a new robust design including a largely stainless
steel construction for maximum corrosion resistance.
Stallion 2 also incorporates a clip in action to the Eurogroove along
with an automatic self setting action which allows the shootbolt to
be set at the required length with greater ease. All of these functions
equate to time-saving benefits for the fabricator with the assurance
of a high performing product.
Pennine Home Improvements supply a range of quality windows, doors and
conservatories from the companys manufacturing centre at Newcastle
upon Tyne. Having developed a company ethos and a reputation for quality,
dealing with a supplier who adopts the same attention to detail is fundamental.
Brian Perry concludes: Not only does Trojan offer some of the
most innovative products in the market, but the companys service
and technical knowledge is equally impressive. It makes a refreshing
change to work with a company that has developed a range of hardware
with the fabricator firmly in mind and the relationship we have with
Trojan is excellent.

Trinity
Test Success
Trinity
door handles have been successfully type tested to all of the requirements
of BS EN 1906:2002 Building Hardware - Lever handles and knob furniture.
The test procedure itself covered areas such as operational forces,
durability and corrosion resistance. In terms of durability the samples
were subjected to a test of 100,000 cycles following which the report
commented that 'no visual signs of damage or wear were apparent after
the completion of testing'.
For corrosion resistance the samples were subjected to 240 hours neutral
salt spray exposure. Our white powder coated samples achieved the highest
grade: Grade 4 - Very High Resistance - recommended for use in exposed
marine atmospheres or very polluted environments.
Commenting on the results Mila's Technical Director, Stuart Carpenter,
said:
We were confident that the testing would be successful but it's
gratifying to receive independent confirmation of our own in-house tests.
This demonstrates Mila's ongoing commitment to supplying only the highest
quality hardware and meeting all relevant regulatory requirements.
Test reports and/or certificates are available upon request.

Bohle
Launches the Glass Student of the Year Award
Bohle,
the manufacturer and distributor of glass, tools, machinery and consumables,
has announced the first ever Bohle Glass Student of the Year Award,
the winners of which will be announced and presented at this years G06
Awards Ceremony in September. The Bohle Glass Student of the Year Award
has been devised to recognise and reward excellence amongst students
studying glass skills, whether for commercial processing, art or craft
applications. The Award will recognise exceptional talent, skill, creativity
and application relating to glass, and intends to provide a coveted
and prestigious annual prize for the winning student.
Entries
will be sought from students whose work demonstrates outstanding skill,
vision, design and/or artistic flair in working with glass and to this
effect will be judged apart from the rest of the G06 Awards by a specialist
judging panel comprising eminent members of academia, industry, art
and design.
Bohle supplies specialist products to the glass processing and creative
craft and art glass markets throughout the world. An inherent part of
the company's philosophy is to actively encourage the development of
glass related skills and knowledge, especially where glass is used as
a medium of design and expression.
Gary
Dean is Managing Director of Bohle UK. He explained: We have devised
the Bohle Student Design Award as we believe that the exceptional talent
that exists in British colleges goes largely unrecognised. We want to
draw out that talent, and to recognise it and reward it. We want to
show the glass industry just what is going on in our colleges, even
perhaps to create opportunities for these young people for when they
leave formal education. This is the first year but we want to see this
event grow. The G Awards series offers the ideal vehicle for the announcement
of the winner and we are very grateful for their support.
Entry will be open to students from all main land UK educational establishments
and will be subject to some simple criteria for entry to encourage as
many as possible:
*
Entries submitted must use mainly glass as a medium or subject
* Course work will be accepted as an entry, if sanctioned by the institute's
Head of Department
* The work can be structural, practical or of an artistic nature
* All entries must have been created during 2005/6
* There must be one entry per participating student only
* The creator along with a completed entry form, must submit all entries
* Entries to be submitted by photograph via email (jpeg or bmp) or post;
we suggest 2-4 good quality images, clearly marked with the students
contact details. We recommend that copies be submitted, as these will
not be returned.
* Entrants must agree to the possibility of Bohle Ltd using the images
for advertising / marketing in the future
* All entry forms must be counter signed by a representative of the
Educational Institute
The judges will be looking for development of ideas and an appreciation
and knowledge of glass, as well as a demonstration of skill in the execution
of the entry. Closing date for entries is 30th July 2006.
The judging panel will short-list the entries to 12 pieces from which
four finalists and their work will be selected. A member of the judging
panel will visit the educational institute that the student represents
to view these pieces in person and discuss the entry with the creator.
All 4 of the finalists will be invited to the G06 Awards, at the Metropole
Hotel, NEC Birmingham in September, as guests of Bohle, where the overall
winner will be announced and be presented with the Bohle Award prize
by a well-known celebrity.
The Prize
Whilst the competition is being organised to provide recognition of
the talent and skills that exists in our colleges, the winner will be
rewarded for their efforts with £1000 cash and an all expenses

Major
Commendation Award 2005
A
Major Commendation Award 2005 was presented to Hambleside
Danelaw Ltd, Daventry for its Insulator Roof Lights at The
Lincoln Centre, London on 7th June 2006 by David Cameron MP Leader of
the Conservative Party.
'The
Insulator Roof Light is a translucent glass fibre reinforced polyester
roof light fitted with an acrylic tessellated prism panel. Unlike
other manufacturers who merely added a third layer of GRP sheeting to
meet the legislation, we looked for a completely new solution.
The resulting panel meets or exceeds the requirements of current legislation
and at the same time reduces solar gain, increases light diffusion and
reduces noise pollution when compared to a normal triple skin roof light.
The technology was based upon panels made in the aerospace industry
where they manufacture aluminium honeycomb panels for strength and lightness
in aircraft structures.
The product works by creating a series of pockets that prevent the movement
of the air within the roof light. The tessellated prism also acts
as a 'lens' to improve the distribution of light to create an improved
work environment when compared with traditional GRP roof lights.'

Green
Light to Enter National Recycling Awards 2006
Green
businesses, organisations and individuals who have gone the extra mile
to reduce waste and improve recycling rates in the past 18 months are
being urged to enter the National Recycling
Awards 2006.
Now in their eighth year, the National Recycling Awards organised by
Materials Recycling Week are widely recognised as the stamp of excellence
in the recycling industry. They are open to any organisation, community
group or company that is affected by recycling, plays an active part
in the recycling process or is involved in the production chain of recycled
products. Winners will be presented with their awards at a glamorous
black-tie awards ceremony to be held at the Bournemouth International
Centre on 15th November 2006.
This year a new category has been added - Electrical and Electronic
Recycler of the Year - to reflect the increasing legislative importance
of the re-use, reprocessing and recycling of electrical goods. It is
open to all aspects of the supply chain from manufacturers and reprocessors
to local authorities and community groups. A wide range of other categories
are available to reward retail recycling initiatives, commitment to
health and safety, local authority achievements, innovative community
projects, successful information campaigns and unsung heroes of the
recycling world.
Entries to all 13 categories should cover the period 1st January 2005
to 25th August 2006. Entry guidelines can be found on http://www.nationalrecyclingawards.com
and the closing date for entries is 25th August 2006 (although nominations
for the Lifetime Achievement Award will be accepted until 7th September
2006).
Jane Rayner, chair of the judges and group editor for Materials Recycling
Week said: 'The Awards are aimed at rewarding good practice and creativity,
as well as developing a network of people who can provide advice to
others who may be adopting similar initiatives. Past winners have been
contacted frequently by others keen to gain their knowledge on specific
projects, and have found that the recognition of winning a National
Recycling Award has helped in attaining funding for future development
and winning tenders, as well as providing a well-earned boost to staff.'
The entries will be judged in September by a panel of industry professionals
including Lee Marshall, chairman, Local Authority Recycling Advisory
Committee; Dr Jane Gilbert, chief executive, Composting Association;
Andrew Braund, head of health and safety, Confederation of Paper Industries;
Trevor Hay, inspector, waste management and recycling section, Health
and Safety Executive; Cam Matheson, project manager, East London Community
Recycling Partnership and Michael Philpott, president, Chartered Institution
of Wastes Management. A list of nominees for the Lifetime Achievement
Award will be posted on 11th September and the winners will be voted
for by readers of MRW and http://www.mrw.co.uk
Winners of the National Recycling Awards 2005 included two high street
retailers, a prison and a foundry, as well as a number of local authorities,
community and charitable organisations who played an important role
in helping the UK to recycle more and reduce its dependence on landfill.
EnviroSystems received the award for Recycled Product of the Year 2005,
for the animal bedding material it developed using recycled by-product
from paper mills. Elizabeth Russell, managing director of EnviroSystems,
said: 'The award has given our company a much higher profile because
the media has been willing to tell the general public about us. In reaching
the general public we have extended our market outside farming and animal
bedding.'
Pippa Milne, recycling and waste manager for Leeds City Council, winner
of the 2005 award for Recycling Target Success said: 'Being able to
say that our performance has been acknowledged by the industry carries
far more weight than anything we could say about ourselves. I certainly
tell people whenever I have the opportunity.'
Whether you have developed a safe and innovative process to recycle
waste, helped to create an end market for recycled products or introduced
a system to reduce waste in the workplace, the National Recycling Awards
provide the perfect opportunity to shout about your achievements and
encourage others to make a difference. For more information please visit
http://www.nationalrecyclingawards.com
The National Recycling Awards 2006 are sponsored by Cleanaway, Grosvenor,
REPIC, Valpak, Veolia Environmental Services, Viridor and http://www.mrw.co.uk
