Young
Designer Karen Nets Top Award
Nottingham
Trent University student Karen Babel won the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom
Specialists Association-sponsored New Designers award for her innovative
design for a bookcase which converts into a double bed!
Karen won £1,000 and judges KBSA Managing Director Graham Hayden,
Bathroom + Kitchen Designer Editor Grahame Morrison and Natalie Kelly
of Essential Publishing all agreed that her design was simple, practical
and very effective in maximising use of space.
This was an excellent design from a talented young designer,
said Graham Hayden. Karen has advised us that she will be using
her prize money to invest in the product itself and we will be circulating
her details to our corporate members to see if any may be able to help
her, both with developing the product and her future career in design.
Karen said: Space is so vital in people's homes and I wanted to
come up with a way of incorporating two pieces of furniture. The most
unused space in anyone's home is vertical space and I wanted to make
the most of that. As well as being a great-looking bookcase, it offers
a comfortable night's sleep as a bed.
The bed-case was created by Karen as part of her BA (Hons) Furniture
and Product Design degree course at Nottingham Trent University, and
the design attracted considerable attention during the New Designers
Show in London.
It was really enjoyable to watch people looking at the bookcase
design and then watching their faces when I told them it turned into
a bed - they looked so surprised!, said Karen. I must have
done around a hundred demonstrations during the show week.

appliances for the future. This year, Electrolux Design Laboratory is
looking for solutions for the home of 2020.
How will we live in 2020? University students from around the world
are invited to compete for cash-awards and high-end workshops in Stockholm
in November. Electrolux is looking for product ideas around:
Cleaning clothes
Cleaning dishes
Cleaning floors
Storing drinks
Storing food
Cooking
The products need to be relevant for the year 2020. The jury will judge
entries based on design and innovation in terms of both functional and
technological aspects, but with focus on solving real problems in everyday
life.
This years competition will be run jointly with the Internet site
designboom.com and is open to all students of design from all nations.
'The Electrolux Design Laboratory competition is an opportunity for
both students and our own designers to gain positive influences outside
their ordinary tasks,' says Henrik Otto, Senior Vice President of global

Prêt-à-Porter
from Whirlpool Recognised with an Industrial Design Excellence Award
in America
The
Whirlpool Prêt-à-Porter,
already awarded the Special Innovation Award at the Foire de Paris
trade fair recently, has been recognised with an Industrial Design Excellence
Award (IDEA) in America.
IDEA,
one of the worlds most prestigious design competitions is co-sponsored
by Business Week magazine and the Industrial Society of America (IDSA).
Judging criteria focused on five areas of industrial design excellence:
design innovation, benefit to the user, benefit to the client/business,
ecological responsibility and appropriate aesthetics and appeal.
Note: The Prêt-à-Porter is marketed under the name Whirlpool
Fabric Freshener in America.
We are honoured to be recognised for the design of our new Fabric
Freshener product said Chuck Jones, vice president of global consumer
design, Whirlpool Corporation. Our development and design of this
product was driven by our in-depth knowledge of our customers needs,
wants and expectations, which enables us to create quality, innovative
solutions that are unmatched in the appliance industry.
Prêt-à-Porter is a portable appliance that revitalises
clothes by removing odours and wrinkles. Good to use between trips to
the drycleaners and when clothes arent dirty and dont really
need washing. The product is suitable for the home or office and compacts
down for easy storage. For clothes that are dry-clean only it reduces
the need to visit the cleaners, for washable clothes, it can cut down
the amount of time delicate fabrics such as silks and woollens need
to be washed. Kind to clothes and the environment, the fabric freshener
runs on a cupful of water and electricity, no chemicals are involved.

Excellence
Report for Neff Area Manager
At
the inaugural Design Innovation Awards ceremony staged earlier this
month by the KBSA (the KBB industrys national Kitchen Bathroom
Bedroom Specialists Association), Neff
area business manager Ray Foley became the very first recipient of the
Supplier Excellence award.
Although
originally intended to be a Company, rather than an Individual persons
award, the KBSA was inundated with entries personally nominating Ray
Foley of Neff for the title of Supplier Excellence.
Comments KBSA Managing Director, Graham Hayden: These new awards
are designed to reward talent and highlight outstanding individuals,
like Ray, who demonstrate the very best in class from within the KBB
industry
Adds Neff Sales Director, Mike Jarrett: This award is richly deserved.
The people that matter, i.e. Rays dealers, have rewarded his expertise
and professionalism in a very public way
Ray Foley has been with Neff for eight years as an area business manager
covering Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Wales, Bristol & Avon for
the brand.
He is married to Debbie and has two young children aged 5 and 3. On
his achievement, Ray says modestly: This award has been won on
behalf of all my colleagues at Neff. We work as a team
At the event, Ray was presented with a specially engraved glass trophy
by the Award evenings star host, singer Toyah Willcox who performed
live on stage to the delight of the invited audience from the UKs
KBB industry.
In addition to the Supplier Excellence award, four other
major awards were presented at the inaugural KBSA ceremony held at the
Millennium Copthorne Hotel in Slough after the associations AGM
on 16th June: for Kitchen Design, Bedroom Design,
Bath Design and Retailer Excellence.
New
Neff Double Oven Wins GHI Accreditation
The
built in cooking appliance specialist Neff
has just received a prestigious stamp of approval from the 'Good Housekeeping
Institute' (GHI) for new double oven model U1644.
After
extensive testing and assessment against a battery of set criteria -
including performance, ease of use, design & instructions - the
testers unanimously agreed that Neff's new oven is worthy of GHI accreditation.
Open to manufacturers and retailers of food and non-food products, the
GHI accreditation scheme carries an independent stamp of approval, widely
recognised as a quality standard by consumers who find it hard to distinguish
between the many different brands currently on the market.
The capacious U1644 double oven is an integral part of Neff's new cooking
collection for 2005. It features electronic control with 'ClearText'
to guarantee excellent cooking results by maintaining the oven temperature
plus a new shelving system called 'FlexiRail' in both ovens to allow
you to move shelves around to tailor make them for individual culinary
requirements.
Lighting has been particularly well thought out on the U1644 with 'NeffLight'
in the main oven offering bright halogen light on all three shelf levels
at once and cleaning has not been forgotten with the inclusion of practical
'CeramiClean' liners to absorb fat and grease throughout the lifetime
of the appliance.
The Good Housekeeping Institute has long been at the forefront of consumer
issues and has been testing products in its research centre since 1924.
It has a well-earned reputation for championing the rights of consumers
to buy good value products that work well. In 2005, the GHI still leads
the way in offering clear, concise advice to consumers who trust their
verdict on real life testing.
Comments Neff Brand Manager, Hannah Watson: Winning GHI accreditation
is the ultimate accolade for Neff as it provides us with an unbiased
endorsement from a well respected independent body. It confirms our
own belief that the U1644 boasts the most practical and ergonomic features
of any double oven currently available in the UK. The GHI accreditation
logo will shortly be appearing on all our promotional literature &
advertising material
BSH
is the Best for Comet - Two Major Industry Awards Won by BSH
BSH
Home Appliances has beaten off formidable competition from
within the industry to win two major awards for Best Delivery
Performance and Best Brand at the annual White Goods
Forum held by leading electrical retailer, Comet in June 2005.
The Best Delivery Performance award was based on an overall
points system operated by Comet during 2004. As well as marks given
for service and continuous improvement, management teams in each distribution
centre were asked for their views on the suppliers, which counted towards
the final results.
In the Best Brand category, outright winner was Bosch, one
of the four household name kitchen appliance brands comprising the BSH
stable in the UK.
The Comet award ceremony was held in Harlow, Essex and was attended
by representatives from all the major manufacturers of domestic appliances
in the UK, including the Electrolux Group, Hoover Candy, Whirlpool and
Stoves.
BSH was represented at the award ceremony by Chief Executive Officer
(CEO) Uwe Hanneck and BSH Account Manager for Comet, Mark Young who
said: BSH has demonstrated consistent improvements on the working
relationship between both businesses in recent years. These awards recognise
the commitment and effort shown by the whole BSH team towards Comet

We have had to adapt to the changes and meet the increased demand for
our appliances with improved availability, more flexibility and even
greater responsiveness. I am very proud of the BSH team as they have

Hotpoint
Wins Home Innovation Award at National Home Awards 2005
Thursday
9th June marked a momentous occasion for Hotpoint,
when the company received the Home Innovation Award at the National
Home Awards 2005. The black tie event, attended by over 700 people from
across a range of industries, took the form of a Champagne reception
and gala dinner at the Artillery Gardens in London.
The
award acknowledges Hotpoints ability to manufacture products that
apply technology and design innovation to meet a consumer household
need. Judges also looked for evidence of style, flair, function, quality
and value amongst the companys white goods product portfolio.
Hotpoint received the award for its Built-In SE100PX Touch Control Single
Oven in stainless steel, which blends 21st century technology with bold
design.
Sophisticated Hotpoint design and technology has been applied to every
detail on this top-of-the-range model, including touch controls which
cleverly display a host of advanced features while also offering consumers
8 programmes. In addition, the Fast Clean feature uses a pyrolytic programme
and the latest technology to clean the oven at the simple push of a
button. In little over an hour all that is left is a small pile of ash
to wipe away.
Neil Tunstall, Marketing Director who collected the award on behalf
of the company said, We are delighted to have received this award
which recognises the efforts and progress made in the area of product
innovation at Indesit Company.
Innovation is a core value within the company and it is very rewarding
for us to see this particular Hotpoint product win the white goods section
of the Home Awards 2005.

Galerie
Optimise is Star of the Night at National Home Awards
Galerie
Optimise, the compact suite from Twyford Bathrooms,
has won The Best Bathroom Design award at this years National
Home Awards.
Impressing the prestigious panel of judges with its clever design, Galerie
Optimise was the clear winner for all key criteria: style, flair, function,
innovation, quality and value.
Not only does Galerie Optimise offer the customer a room-saving solution,
but it also ensures quick and fuss-free installation thanks to Twyford
Bathrooms Total Install system. The comprehensive Galerie Optimise
range is a good choice for those with a limited amount of room, and,
as part of the esteemed Galerie family, will add style and
flair to any bathroom.
Anna Burns (pictured), Marketing Manager of Twyford Bathrooms says We
are thrilled to win this award, especially as we were up against such
strong competition. We have always been very proud of Galerie Optimise,
and feel that our designers have created a champion in its sector. As
space becomes more and more limited in todays homes, a stylish
yet functional compact suite is invaluable to the customer.
The aim of the awards is to recognise excellence in the creation of
outstanding homes. The ability to move the WC Pan from side to side
to avoid radiators or pipe-work means Galerie Optimise is ideal for
tricky and compact bathroom spaces.
Twist
'N' Lock Wins House Beautiful Award
Twist
'N' Lock wall mounted accessories - the bathroom storage solution from
Croydex - has won the Silver Award
for Best Bathroom Product at the House Beautiful Awards 2005. Probably
the smallest product on the shortlist - and with retail prices starting
at £5 certainly one of the cheapest - Twist 'N' Lock was awarded
high marks by the judges for its 'quality, style, innovation and value
for money.'
The Awards were presented at a celebrity-packed ceremony at BAFTA (British
Academy of Film and Television Arts) in London and featured in the June
issue of House Beautiful magazine.
House Beautiful editor Kerryn Harper said: We love the Twist 'N'
Lock storage systems from Croydex, which need no drilling into your
tiles to fix. The neat chrome stoppers cover perspex suction caps for
an ultra smart finish. Simple but so clever! Judge Phil Spencer
(of Location Location fame) said: Twist 'N' Lock demonstrates
innovation at a really accessible price.
Unlike traditional suction-mounted products, the unique Twist 'N' Lock
combination of vacuum and sucker produces an extra strong, durable fixing,
which locks the wire baskets securely to tiles, glass or mirrored surfaces.
Dramatic new packaging stresses the simple installation (No drills,
no screws, no glue!) and illustrates how the patented mechanism locks
securely to any shiny surface.
Compact sizes and competitive prices make the products suitable for
small rooms and tight budgets, while offering retailers high margin
incremental sales.
The range includes Soap Dishes, Corner Units, Shaving Stations and Tiered
Racks. Baskets are made of chrome plated steel wire and retail prices
start at just £5.
Twist 'N' Lock wall mounted accessories are made by Croydex, a UK specialist
in shower curtains and bathroom accessories since 1919. A portfolio
is displayed at http://www.croydex.co.uk.
Burbidge
Wins IT Award for Use of Advanced Computer Simulation Software
Kitchen
frontals and accessories manufacturer Burbidge
has been highly commended in the Best of British Manufacturing IT Awards
for its use of advanced computer simulation software. The awards, organised
by Manufacturing Computer Solutions magazine, recognise companies that
have effectively harnessed IT in order to reduce costs, improve efficiencies
and competitiveness and to respond to new business opportunities.
Burbidge
was highly commended in the Plant & Factory Controls Systems category
of the awards, for the application of ProModel simulation computer software.
The software was used to identify the most efficient and cost effective
way to upgrade and improve the companys paint line, speed up production
and solve issues related to batch sizes and cycle frequencies, prior
to any financial commitment.
Following analysis using the ProModel software, Burbidge purchased a
second lacquering pen in order to create two finishing lines, and then
separated the 20 per cent of products that needed painting and the 80
per cent of products that only required lacquering. In doing so, Burbidge
has effectively increased output by 33 per cent.
Graham Heaven, Burbidges financial director and head of IT, was
responsible for introducing and instigating ProModel, one of the most
advanced systems in the field of dynamic simulation modelling. He said:
In order to meet market demands and improve performance in todays
business environment change is inevitable. However, trying out new operational
ideas can take time, and is often disruptive and of course costly.
We
wanted to be able to experiment and try out new ideas whether
operational or strategic before making any financial commitment.
We also wanted to have visual accuracy and animation to help explain
the proposed changes, so we invested in software that would enable us
to do this. The results have justified the investment. For us, simulation
modelling has become an integral part of our decision making process
as it provides exactly what we need clear and detailed answers
and powerful justification for financial investment.
Managing director Ben Burbidge said: We have been very impressed
with the way Graham has introduced and implemented ProModel, especially
as he didnt have the support of a large in-house IT department.
Assessing production process changes and investigating investment decisions
prior to financial commitment has delivered very real benefits for us.
Most importantly, we have been able to make informed decisions and have
eliminated the risk of purchasing the wrong machinery for our needs.
We believe our use of computer modelling is a real reflection of Burbidges
forward thinking nature.
Burbidge has used ProModel for other projects, including the replacement
of its aging door-edge profiling line. Two alternatives were modelled
a twin cutter and a single cutter and the most efficient
solution was to buy two machines.
For information on Burbidges range of wood, painted, foil wrap
and metal frontals and accessories, please visit http://www.burbidge.co.uk
or call 024 7667 1600. Burbidges products can also be viewed in
realistic room sets in the companys showroom at its Coventry manufacturing
facility. The showroom is open five days a week between 9am and 5pm.
ALNO
'jumbo' Wins Red Dot Award
ALNO's
'jumbo' base unit from the Libero furniture collection has received
the red dot award: product design 2005.
The red dot award, from the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen, is one
of the most renowned competitions on the international design scene.
It is awarded annually to the best and most innovative products showing
the highest quality and design.
An international jury gave the prestigious award to the 'jumbo' base
unit because it is an all-round miracle of storage space from the category
of Rund or Rondo units, which have recently become so popular.
The unit, unusual in form and design, is designed to be used as an integral
component in a fitted kitchen or as the finishing element in a row of
units. The organised interior of the characteristic front element provides
additional storage space. This design is available in four colours (lapis
blue, ruby red, white and vanilla) and also as a stainless steel version.
The 'jumbo' will be on display in the 'Design Innovations 2005' special
exhibition in the Design Zentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen in Essen from 4th
July until 7th August 2005.

The award, part of the NHIC annual awards programme, is open to any

the excellent efforts of the NHIC in offering this kind of practical

use of both materials and available space and we very much hope that
young designers all over the country will take advantage of this opportunity
to showcase their work.

has paid special attention to energy efficiency in his or her recent
work.
The Award will be made by an expert international jury made up of editors-in-chief
and representatives of architecture magazines from five countries (France,
Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom) and by Dominique Gauzin-Muller,
architect and expert in environmentally friendly architecture.
The selection of the architects invited to take part and the winner

* the choice of high performance and low energy consumption systems
(heating, air-conditioning, lighting, ventilation, controls and facilities
management,...) ;
* the use of renewable energies
* the distribution of natural light;
* the application of bioclimatic principles (setting and orientation
of the building, enhanced insulation of the envelope, exploitation of
free, natural solar energy,...).
The award will be presented at the show in Paris in front of an invited
audience of architects and students from schools of architecture, and
the winner's designs will be displayed and explained.
