Security as Standard
In
addition to a comprehensive list of British Standard accreditations,
KEB Fabrications has now added
a Secured by Design licence to its professional credentials. SBD is
the police initiative intended to encourage the development of building
products that assist in reducing crime and the fear of crime. Commenting
on the award Managing Director, Lawrence Breakspear said, We are
delighted to be accepted into the Secured by Design initiative. It is
a natural progression of our company philosophy of Decent Homes for
all. This latest accreditation reflects the fact that for many years
we have been supplying high security window and door products, creating
a safer and more secure environment for householders.
The Midlands-based Profile 22 fabricator is one of the UKs leading
social housing window and door refurbishment specialists with long term
partnering agreements all over the country. In order to secure an SBD
licence the company was required to demonstrate its existing accreditation

Design
Achievement Award for Combilift
The
Design Achievement Award at the 2005 Fork Lift Truck Associations
Annual Awards for Excellence went to the design team at Combilift Ltd.,
the originators of the Combilift four-directional forklift truck.
Combilifts MD Martin McVicar accepted the award on behalf of the
company from Jim Kearney of Calor, the category sponsor, in front of a
capacity audience at Birminghams Hilton Metropole on 26th February.
'This years Design Achievement Award recognises an innovative truck
concept that truly sells itself' said Paul Nichol, FLTA Vice-Chairman.
He went on to recount the rapid success of the Irish company on a global
scale, which began with initial exports of the Combilift to Norway within
the first year of its development.
The 'Archie' award is testimony from the FLTA board to the achievement
of the two pioneers of the Combilift concept, Martin McVicar and Robert
Moffett in creating a space-saving machine that operates as three trucks
in one; a counterbalance forklift, sideloader and four-way reach truck.
The versatility of this four-directional concept has fuelled sales in
a wide variety of industry sectors, with the Combilift being a familiar
sight within the glass and glazing sector.Commenting on the latest award
for Combilift (Martin McVicar was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur
of the Year in 2001 and the company has also won the DHL Export Achievement
Award), Martin said he was delighted that the forklift industry had recognised
the benefits of the Combilift solution, which initially challenged conventional
design theory but which has now become an established concept with over
3,000 units now in operation around the world.

Nanogel®
Aerogel Named Best Innovative Product for Energy Savings at Bau 2005
Nanogel®
translucent aerogel, Cabot Corporation's
daylighting material that combines high light transmission with energy
efficiency and sound insulation, was named Best Innovative Product
for Energy Savings at Bau 2005, Germany's leading building and
construction exhibition recently held in Munich. Based on feedback from
Bau participants, the editors of Deutsche Architektenblatt (DAB) selected
Nanogel as one of the best building products at the show designed to
meet the needs of architects seeking economic solutions.
Nanogel was one of the most widely discussed products at Bau because
of its unique combination of high light transmission and energy efficiency,
said James Satterwhite, global business manager for Nanogel Construction
Segment, Cabot Corporation. Industry response to our product underscores
the demand for improved energy efficiency in traditional daylighting
applications.
Cabot Corporation exhibited at Bau 2005 alongside product partners including
Scobalit, GE Advanced Materials Structured Products, Kalwall and Okalux,
who have all developed new glazing solutions incorporating Nanogel.
Scobalit is responsible for one of the first installations of Cabot's
aerogel product in Europe, Nanogel filled Scobatherm daylighting elements
on the roof and north wall of the Buchwiesen school sports hall in Zurich,
Switzerland. EMPA (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing
and Research) and the University of Zurich tested the design and completed
project and confirmed the architects' assumptions of high light diffusion
and improved energy efficiency.
This building couldn't be built without the light diffusion and
thermal insulation properties of Nanogel, Satterwhite said. Traditional
glazing products aren't able to bring such large amounts of natural
light to indoor environments because the heat loss or gain from the
outside world would be too great to comply with strict building regulations
for energy efficiency.

Nanogel translucent aerogel insulation material
was selected by Chemist Dr. Wiesman for a recently completed extension
to his Pharmacy in Neuhausen, Switzerland.
The application, which measures 13 x 7 metres, consists of an aluminium
profile dryglazing system, using 25 mm Scobatherm® panels filled
with Nanogel translucent aerogel. The system provides a G-value of 32%
and a U-value of .85, with a light transmission of 40%. Key benefits
include diffused natural light with no shadows, energy savings and greater
comfort regardless of the season.

About Nanogel
Cabot Corporation created Nanogel, in part to insulate thermally inefficient
glazing systems. The feather-light aerogel is based on Cabot's patented
surface modification and fine-particle manufacturing technology. The
nanoporous particles have an air content of 97% and weigh only 90 grams/litre,
making Nanogel the lightest solid material in the world. It provides
a superior combination of thermal and sound insulation as well as light
transmission and diffusion over other insulation materials. These benefits
offer new design solutions for architects where both maximum natural
daylight levels and energy efficiency are required. Nanogel is manufactured
exclusively by Cabot in Frankfurt, Germany.
About Cabot Corporation
Cabot Corporation is a global specialty chemicals and materials company
headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Cabot's major products
are carbon black, fumed silica, inkjet colourants, capacitor materials,
and cesium formate drilling fluids. The website address is: http://www.cabot-corp.com.
About the DAB Award
The new award, introduced by DAB publisher Forum-Verlag, highlights
its launch of Exhibition Scout, a guide of innovative products presented
at industry events for architects and product manufacturers. The Bau
show was selected for the launch based on its audience of nearly 200,000
visitors from more than 102 countries. When asked, the majority of architects
at the show named Nanogel the most Innovative Product for energy savings.

Beaufort
Doors PAS the Test
Beaufort
Secure Designs aluminium door profiles have achieved
PAS 23 / 24 approval the industrys most stringent performance
and security standard.
The relevant tests were conducted on a range of full size aluminium
doors from the Beaufort system at Winkhaus Testing Ltd, a registered
UKAS laboratory. The doors used for testing were fabricated by Essex-based
Duration Windows Ltd, an ISO 9002 accredited company and member of Beauforts
Approved Fabricator Scheme.
PAS 23 covers a range of general performance criteria including weather
resistance and basic security, whereby products are subjected to a 50,000
cycle test to assess the durability of the door leaf, frame, hinges
and locks. PAS 24 relates to enhanced security levels including hard/soft
body impact, mechanical load tests and the ability to withstand manual
attack. During the three-day testing procedure, Beaufort aluminium doors
were mounted into a test rig and various loads applied, both laterally
and horizontally, to simulate the forces of an attempted break in. Also,
in a human intervention test, experienced testers tried to use their
knowledge to gain entry.
PAS 23 / 24 approval represents an important performance standard within
the door market, particularly in the public sector, which specifies
these standards before awarding contracts. Indeed, gaining PAS approval
is already reaping rewards for Beaufort customers, as Nigel Yates the
companys Sales Director explains, In a recent contract for
22 doors for a Havering Council project PAS 23 / 24 was an essential
condition. Everglaze, a Beaufort fabricator in East London, won the
contract on the strength of our outstanding test results. Achieving
this standard gives specifiers and main contractors the peace of mind
that the Beaufort aluminium range has been tried, tested and can be
trusted,

Three
Companies Acknowledged for Best Conservatory Installations in 2004
The
conservatory website, www.conservatoriesonline.com,
has announced the winners of its Conservatory Installation of the Year
Awards.
The overall winner of Best Conservatory Installation 2004 was London-based
Skyview Conservatories Ltd for an individually designed Victorian-style
conservatory using Idigbo, a versatile hardwood obtained
from sustainable plantation sources in the Ivory Coast, West Africa.
The attention to detail and high standard of work, from the brass furniture
fittings to the under-floor heating, made for a winning installation.

Winner
of Best Conservatory Installation 2004 designed by Skyview Conservatories
Special
Design Award 2004 went to Midlands-based Heritage Conservatories
Ltd for a beautiful hardwood conservatory. Painted with white Sikkens
paint, the installation included a small orangery-style porch connecting
it to the lounge. The conservatory also featured leaded fanlights
to match the existing property and equal site lines, which
gave a very pleasing overall aesthetic appearance.
A US company with workshops in Fakenham, Norfolk picked up the title
for Best International Installation (non-UK). Town & Country
built a stunning orangery in a little-used courtyard to create a formal
dining area and improve traffic flow in the U-shaped house. The company
also took into account the owners requests to preserve the natural
light from the courtyard space while at the same time safeguarding the
wall art and antiques they planned to have on show.
http://www.conservatoriesonline.com gives potential buyers information
on everything they need to know about every aspect of conservatories.
Barry Dunlop, managing director of site owner eBuilders, said: Our
site aims to encourage excellence in our conservatory suppliers. These
awards acknowledge the achievements of those companies that have demonstrated
high-quality and first-class standards on a particular installation
challenge in 2004.
