Ultraframe Sponsored Students Collect Engineering Awards

Two groups of sixth form students sponsored by the conservatory designer and manufacturer, Ultraframe, have been presented with national awards in design and engineering after completing a seven month engineering project working with Ultraframe.

Ultraframe’s Design and Development Director, Andrew Thomson and the students’ group mentor Paul Wooff, a Research & Development Design Engineer at the company, presented the ten pupils with their gold CREST awards which celebrate Creativity in Science and Technology. The students undertook the award winning projects as part of the National Engineering Education Scheme, set up by the Royal Academy of Engineering to encourage scientific curiosity through work related learning.

Ultraframe partnered the Clitheroe Royal Grammar School for the project and is delighted to have helped encourage new talent and contributed to the local community. The company sponsored the students’ participation in the scheme, as well as offering Paul Wooff to act as a mentor and guide the students through the project planning, brainstorming and problem solving process.

Phil Taylor, Head of Design Technology at the school commented: 'Our partnership with Ultraframe has been absolutely fantastic. Paul Wooff set the two groups ‘real life’ engineering problems and gave up his time to help them, and even attend a three day brainstorming workshop at Liverpool University. We have an excellent link with Ultraframe and a new group of students has already been sponsored and is working with them to complete this year’s scheme.'

Ultraframe mentor, Paul Wooff, was equally impressed by the students’ enthusiasm. He commented: 'I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with the pupils on these hugely successful projects. Ultraframe always strives to lead the conservatory market with cutting edge technology and innovative, high quality design and we are proud to have been able to help and encourage the engineering talents and achievements of our local students.'

Sash UK is Giving it 100%

The Order Processing Department at Sash UK went to the top of its class this autumn when it received 100% in the 'Good and Excellent' category of Sash's quarterly customer survey.

The team of eight has experience in the department amounting to almost 70 years. They handle the processing of window and door orders for Sash's trade, commercial and D.I.Y customers in addition to producing quotes for the company’s trade customers. Order processing Manager, Darryl Count, puts their recent accomplishment down to 'experience and effective team-working'.

Joint Managing Director, David Ruzicka, said, ‘The Order Processing Department has always performed very well in our surveys, consistently reaching 90% and above, but their recent achievement is outstanding. The survey results come direct from our customers. They are able to express any concerns or pass on any commendations so we view these results as being a true account of the customer experience. It goes without saying that we are proud to have a team of such dedicated people working at Sash.’

Sash has been conducting its customer survey for five years and results from it have helped to shape the growth of the company. ‘We find out exactly what is most important to our customers and aim to at address it at every opportunity,’
explained David.

Furthermore, according to recent results, Sash customers agree that there has also been a marked improvement at the company in general over the past year. ‘We will never stop striving to improve year on year,’ said David. ‘Part of Sash's appeal to customers is the service and experience we deliver. Customers have commented that Sash is the best supplier they deal with by some margin. Our aim is for complete customer satisfaction across the board. We will only achieve this by consistently exceeding their expectations of us.’

Everglade Scoops Top Showroom Award

Everglade Windows Ltd has won a special award for the showroom at its new £3m factory.

Following its move into the 43,000 square foot factory in Perivale, Middlesex, Everglade set up a dedicated 2,000 square foot showroom featuring its full range of products, including Kömmerling GOLD and Connoisseur PVC-U windows, doors and conservatory products, and hardware.

‘Although the showroom is aimed mainly at our own retail customers, commercial specifiers also find it useful,’ says Managing Director Vinod Gopal.

In addition, the showroom is open for trade customers to bring their own domestic end-user buyers to see the products in situ. ‘Our network of installation customers who don't have their own showroom, say that for the first time their customers can now see how their finished conservatory and installed windows and doors will look.’

And Everglade's PVC-U systems supplier, the Kömmerling brand, felt the showroom qualified for its coveted showroom award. Vinod Gopal is pictured here receiving the special ‘Showroom of Excellence’ plaque from Kömmerling's National Sales and Marketing Manager, Dan Whalley.

‘With the replacement window industry reaching saturation point as far as the lower quality end of the market is concerned, it's important that customers can appreciate the high quality of Everglade's finished windows,’ says Dan Whalley. ‘When people come into this showroom they quickly see why Kömmerling manufacturers and installers do not get involved in ridiculously low-price offers that ignore quality and customer benefits,’

And Vinod Gopal says the showroom actively demonstrates what is available at the top end of the industry, and will open up new opportunities as the UK market becomes saturated with low-price, low quality windows. ‘Everglade customers are in the upper end of the market, where there will always be a demand for top quality windows. We felt it was important for our showroom to reflect that quality.’

More Awards for New World

New World Developments has won another two regional awards, one for business innovation and the other for marketing, from Ballymena Borough Council.

In a region which is home to many successful companies, New World says that its triumph is the culmination of 10 years of hard work and a relentless quest for high quality. Managing director Austin McGillian says 'I am very proud of what the team has achieved. Our factory operation has been superb and this gives confidence to sales and marketing. We all pull together.'

Judges were particularly impressed with the launch of Apeer in 2004, New World’s composite door. Backed by three years of research and development, and £3m investment, the company’s marketing tactics brought Apeer’s benefits to fabricators through exhibitions, brochures and the media. For the launch, New World was supported by Triplicate, the Belfast and London-based design company.

'Apeer’s obvious qualities of ‘kerbside appeal’, endurance and security features have ensured its best seller status in both Ireland and the UK, but it is the service commitment that underwrites all our efforts. Our customers return again and again because they know we work as partners in their success' explains Austin.

New World has won a regional award from Department of Trade and Industry for its IT initiatives and was short-listed by the Charted Institute of Marketing, particularly for PanelSpec. This online ordering programme allows customers to pick all the elements of their front door, the glazing, colour, hardware and size and view the door panel on screen before it is bought. PanelSpec offers more customer satisfaction and eliminates waste and errors.

New World also recently launched Monno, a complementary, single rebate doorset. Apeer is an approved product of the NIHE and several other UK councils.

Banaglaze the design, surveying and installation expert set a new record recently by meeting the requirements of the BSI Kitemark scheme for the survey and installation of windows and doors in just five weeks. Presented with its Kitemark licence this week, the Buckinghamshire company says that it is also the first in the Thames Valley area to achieve Kitemark certification for window and door installations.

Chris Lewis, Business Manager for construction products at BSI Product Services, says, 'BSI is delighted to welcome Banaglaze into the exclusive Kitemark Window Installers 'Club'. The company has achieved British Standards BS7950/7412 for security and performance respectively.

With relocation to larger premises in Hebburn, South Tyneside, already under its belt and a thriving trade customer base, the award of the Kitemarks will allow the company to enter the 'next phase' of growth according to Nigel Porter.

Comar 5Pi Top-swing Reversible Window: Low U-values and Exceptional Weather Performance

Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems
Comar 5Pi Top-swing Window exceeds the requirements of the latest European Weather Tests: BS 6375: Part 1: 2004, BS EN 1026, 1027 and 122111.

The window when tested at BRE, was water tight at 600Pa, passed air permeability at 600Pa and resistance to wind load at 2400Pa.

Simon Jones, Technical Director at Comar, commented: ‘The Comar 5Pi window range is an innovative system which uses the same profiles to manufacture window configurations such as tilt and turn, pivot, sliding as well as casement windows. This ensures low stock-holding and fast production for those ever tighter site deadlines.’

Comar's top-swing window is suitable for situations where cleaning is an issue. The window can be restricted in accordance with safety regulations, while offering ventilation. With another operation, the top-swing function allows the exterior of the sash to be reversed for easy cleaning.

Comar utilises high quality hardware to ensure the design life of the product - for further reassurance this is insurance backed. Copies of the test results are available upon request as well as full Technical Manuals.

CertainTeed Employee Honoured

Louis Daniel, cutter operator at the CertainTeed roofing plant, has been selected as one of five employees to win the Saint-Gobain Corporation ‘Volunteer Recognition Award.’ The award was presented to Daniel at a special ceremony held recently at the Oxford plant.

The award recognises employees and retirees of Saint-Gobain Corporation (of which CertainTeed is a part) whose volunteer efforts are clearly extraordinary and encourages employees and retirees to help improve their communities through volunteerism. While extending recognition to employees, the award also includes a $1,000 contribution to each of the organisations the employees and retirees serve.

‘This award recognizes not only our employees' and retirees' commitment to volunteerism, but also their enthusiasm and concern,’ says Jean-François Phelizon, president and chief executive officer of Saint-Gobain Corporation. ‘Their contributions demonstrate outstanding public service and serve as a role model for other employees and retirees.’

Daniel won the award for his eight-year involvement with the Stovall Volunteer Fire Department; he is currently department chief.

‘There is no better satisfaction than helping somebody,’ says Daniel. ‘I love what I do. I especially enjoy training new volunteers, mentoring them and instilling in them the care and devotion necessary.’

Adds Jason Tingen, assistant fire chief, ‘Louis exemplifies what it is to be a volunteer firefighter. He is always diligent in his duties and pays meticulous attention to detail. We could not carry out our public safety and service functions without his level of dedication.’

A resident of Stovall, Daniel joined CertainTeed in 1990.

Saint-Gobain Corporation's Volunteer Recognition Award is open to all U.S. and Canadian employees and retirees of the company. In all, there were five employee winners and one retiree winner of this year's award.

The selection committee was comprised of representatives from various Saint-Gobain businesses throughout the United States and Canada. There were more than 80 nominations for the 2005 awards. Saint-Gobain Corporation, based in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, is the holding company for the U.S.- and Canadian-based businesses of Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, including CertainTeed Corporation. One of the top 100 industrial companies in the world with more than 180,000 employees in 49 countries, Saint-Gobain employs approximately 25,000 people and operates about 170 plants throughout the United States and Canada.
