Building on its reputation for supplying high quality products that perform, Liverpool-based Total Glass has recently achieved Secured by Design (SBD) status on its comprehensive range of PVC-U casement and tilt n turn windows.

Secured by Design is the UK Police flagship initiative supporting the principles of 'designing out crime' and backs one of the Government's key planning objectives - the creation of secure, quality places where people wish to live and work. It sets out to identify standards and evaluations that test the competence of security products and hardware and their resistance to criminal attack.

Commenting on obtaining the accreditation, Frank Deary, Total Glass Managing Director, says: ‘We're delighted and proud to announce we have achieved Secured by Design status on our windows. Secured by Design is well recognised and respected throughout the building industry as a benchmark for quality. Achieving formal SBD recognition underlines further our on-going commitment to security and product quality.’

‘For our installing customers, SBD certification brings additional benefits as homeowners are increasingly looking for products which meet the Police Preferred Specification standards. According to recent police research, Secured by Design has been shown to reduce burglary by up to 50%. This is a reassuring statistic that can be passed onto consumers, increasing their confidence and reassurance in the product's security and performance, as well as opening up greater selling opportunities for our customers,’ adds Frank. ‘On the commercial side, as a Secured by Design licence holder we can offer window products, manufactured to the highest quality and security standards, bearing the industry-recognised status that specifiers and end users demand.’

Secured by Design was created by ACPO and is a part of its Crime Prevention Initiative (CPI) department which concentrates on the safety and security at the design and planning stage of new build developments. Eurocell will continue to encourage and help our customers through the BS7950 accreditation process and has negotiated a preferential rate for our customers who are striving to achieve Secured By Design member status in their own right.

‘We've worked hard to gain this accreditation and ensure that our BS7950 accredited High Security Window System is suitable for our customers needs and fits specific market requirements.

‘I met with the Association of Chief Police Officers and think what they are doing to help with new build and regeneration programmes is a real asset to the community and to our industry. System 10 Scoops Prestigious Innovation Award for Conservation Vertical Slider

WHS Halo System 10 is celebrating further public sector acclaim having scooped the prestigious 2006 LHC (London Housing Consortium) 'Innovation of the Year' award for the System 10 Conservation Vertical Slider.

The annual awards ceremony recognises and rewards the efforts of key suppliers of building products and services to the LHC; one of the UK's largest and longest-established public sector purchasing organisations currently responsible for the procurement programmes of more than 260 local authorities, RSLs and ALMOs.

Specifically developed to satisfy demand from the London Borough of Islington for a sustainable window solution for use within conservation-sensitive areas, the Conservation Vertical Slider is the product of a genuine partnership between the local authority, the LHC and WHS Halo System 10, which involved regular meetings with Council planners, architects and housing managers to establish the exact product requirements.

Using the existing System 10 Vertical Slider as a platform, WHS Halo developed a traditionally-styled sash window that combined an authentic appearance with the recognised benefits of PVC-U. To effectively blend with the period architecture found within the borough, the Conservation Vertical Slider features authentic Georgian bars to replicate putty lines, top sash horns, deep bottom rails to the lower sash, and traditional front to back dimensions and hardware arrangements.

Commenting on the award, Mike Stevenson, Sales & Marketing Director, Public Sector, WHS Halo System 10, said: ‘Public sector clients often have very specific and sometimes unique requirements, which means that systems companies operating in this arena must have the capacity and expertise to develop bespoke window solutions.

‘By harnessing the power of our vertical integration, we were able to design, extrude and fabricate an innovative, sustainable and client-driven window solution.

‘With the support of the LHC, we have seen the product make a major impact in the public sector, where its design and sustainability have a natural fit, and many hundreds of Conservation Vertical Sliders have now been installed for the London Borough of Islington, as well as several other public sector bodies.’

For further information on the Conservation Vertical Slider, please contact WHS Halo System 10 on 0121 749 3000 or visit http://www.system10.co.uk. For information on working in the public sector, please visit http://www.publicsectornewsline.co.uk.

AWJ Awarded Investors in People

AWJ Glass has gained Investors in People (IIP) status following a rigorous assessment of its working practices. The coveted Standard is only awarded to companies that demonstrate a genuine commitment to the development and training of its staff as part of a clearly defined business strategy.

From left to right, John Turner, Business Link handing the Plaque to; David Rosher - AWJ Glass - Operational Director, Debbie Whitelaw - AWJ Glass - Joint MD and Andy Whitelaw - AWJ Glass - Joint MD.

The achievement follows a period of growth and expansion for the IG and processed glass producer, including the move to purpose-built premises equipped with the latest machinery. AWJ Glass sees implementing IIP as a means of further strengthening the business by developing the full potential of its workforce.

Andy Whitelaw, Managing Director of AWJ Glass, comments: ‘It's not about a plaque on the wall, it's about recognising the role that each member of staff can play in helping a company like ours achieve its goals. Previously we were spread across two sites, but since moving to our new factory we've been able to implement new structures and procedures which have had a really positive effect on communication and staff morale, which all helped towards reaching the IIP Standard.’

Becoming an Investors in People involved interviews with staff at all levels to assess AWJ's performance in a number of key areas and how this was linked to objectives set within an achievable business plan. These included giving equal access to training and development, conducting regular staff appraisals and meetings, plus reinforcing health and safety procedures and risk assessments.

Andy Whitelaw believes achieving IIP enhances its reputation for quality in all areas of the business. ‘Our products display the kite mark to prove quality and now the workforce and the company as a whole has been recognised as professional and forward-thinking. AWJ's customers will also feel the benefit of the improvements we've made, particularly in internal and external communication, and we'll be constantly reviewing procedures to ensure both products and service continue to meet and exceed our customers' requirements.’

Direct Window Co Achieves 'C' Rating with a Little International Expertise

The Direct Window Co has achieved a 'C' rated window thanks to the help and support from Edgetech, For.El and machinery supplier Promac.

The company has invested in a For.El fully automated Super Spacer® line from Promac which was running throughout Glassex. This new line is capable of processing a glass unit with a better thermal performance, thereby helping improve the overall energy rating of the installed window.

The British Fenestration Rating Council's (BFRC) window energy rating scheme has been widely discussed in the glass and glazing industry and the warm edge technology inherent in Super Spacer® has provided the Direct Window Co with the opportunity to provide a window with a low energy rating.

Craig Goss, managing director of the Direct Window Co comments: ‘We are delighted with the investment that we are making. It was great to discuss this with all those involved in the project at Glassex. We had the opportunity to speak to Gerhard Reichert from Edgetech and Sergio Cosano from For.El.’

Joe Hague, head of the glass division at Promac explains the relationship with machinery supplier For.El: ‘We have worked closely with For.El to develop a number of Super Spacer® solutions, everything from a manual applicator to a fully automated line. As the energy rating issues become ever more prominent we expect further glass processors to embrace this latest technology.’
