QUESTlONS & ANSWERS
Q What is the definition of a self-cleaning
glass?
A In this case, the term self-cleaning means that the glass is not cleaned
by human operations only, but also as a result of a natural element like
rain. Self-cleaning does not however mean that the glass is no cleaning.
But cleaning is considerably reduced.
Q What savings in window cleaning costs can it give to a block of flats
for example?
A Cost savings depend on a number of factors: level and type of pollution,
exposure to rain
and wind, etc. On average, the windows need cleaning two to three times
less frequently,
which means a reduction of at least 50% of the overall cost.
Q What applications is SGG AQUACLEAN designed for?
A Its remarkable properties make SGG AQUACLEAN suitable for all sectors
of the building industry, both for new build and for renovation, in applications
where the glass is exposed to rain or water, in a vertical or sloping
position.
- Residential sector: balconies, windows and French windows, skylights,
picture windows and balcony guarding
- Non-residential sector: glazed facades and curtain walls, overhead glazing,
external shop windows, street furniture and greenhouses
Q Can SGG AQUACLEAN be used in an automobile application?
A The requirement in the automobile sector is more for a glass with an
anti-rain function, which assists the clearing of raindrops at the moment
of impact, to maintain clear vision through the glass. SAINT-GOBAIN Sekurit
(manufacturer of glass for the automobile industry) already markets a
hydrophobic glass which clears off the rain, limits the adhesion of external
elements such as mud or insects and makes the windows easier to clean.
Q
When will SGG AQUACLEAN be available?
A SGG AQUACLEAN will be available in the UK and lreland from early in
2002. In each country, it will be marketed by Saint-Gobain Glass and its
network of processing/distribution subsidiaries and by approved partners.
Q Does a self-cleaning glass never need any cleaning?
A No. With SGG AQUACLEAN you can have longer periods between cleaning
than with a conventional glass. It is not a "no cleaning" glass,
especially in the event of large dirty marks or areas of high pollution.
Q How do you clean SGG AQUACLEAN?
A To remove dust and ordinary dirt simply rub the surface with a soft,
damp cloth. The dirt comes off easily and leaves no marks. Conventional
window-cleaning products can be used for more stubborn dirt, taking care
to ensure that they do not leave a greasy deposit on the surface.
Q Will SGG AQUACLEAN do away with thousands of window cleaners' jobs?
A Certainly not. First of all, SGG AQUACLEAN is not a "no cleaning"
glass, and needs to be cleaned from time to time. Secondly, it will also
be used in applications where the glass is never cleaned due to extreme
difficulty of access. Finally, the amount of glass already installed which
needs to be cleaned frequently is so huge that the impact of SGG AQUACLEAN
will be gradual.
Q What is the lifetime of the coating?
A The coating of SGG AQUACLEAN, which is totally integrated with the surface
of the glass, is very strong. Durability tests have shown that its lifetime
is similar to that of doubleglazed units.
