glasstec 2006 Retains World Glass Show Crown

glasstec closed on Saturday 28th October with over 54,000 visitors attending which, compared to glasstec 2004, showed a slight rise (53,752). In all over 1,300 companies, associations and research institutes from 46 countries exhibited. Approximately 60% of visitors came from one of the 84 foreign countries ranging from Argentina to South Africa. And over 70% of these visitors had decision-making powers.

Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, said: ‘glasstec is the only trade fair worldwide to showcase the entire spectrum of the glass sector. It has proven once again that the innovative potential of glass as a construction material and the operational excellence of manufacturers, finishers and machinery manufacturers is far from being fully exploited.’ He went on to say that thin special glass, insulation glass, laser technology, photovoltaics and solar thermal systems in particular met with keen interest from the visitors.

Bohle's massive stand had a number of demonstrations of glassworking techniques which proved highly popular

‘glass technology live’ with its accompanying symposium attracted a great deal of interest. 94% of the visitors rated it highly while 77% said it was the main reason for visiting glasstec. ‘glass technology live’ was conceived and organised by Professor Stefan Behling, Senior Partner at Foster and Partners London office, in cooperation with his team from Stuttgart University. The show presented innovation and vision of the glass industry ranging from coloured thin-film cells and switchable glass to the world's largest free-span all-glass staircase. The theme ‘Houses of the Future’ demonstrated the varied applications of glass in both technical and aesthetic terms. ‘glass technology live’ was also accompanied by a symposium addressing different focal topics each day. Speakers from leading research institutes, associations, companies and architects' offices presented lectures on current and forward-looking subjects such as ‘Emotion and Materiality’ or ‘Glass and Energy’.

The next glasstec will be held in Düsseldorf in October 2008. For further information on glasstec 2006 go to http://www.glasstec.de.

Ritec Celebrates Silver Anniversary at Glasstec

Visitors to the Ritec stand at this year's Glasstec were greeted with a host of new developments to mark the 25th anniversary of the revolutionary glass surface protection technology, Clearshield. Pioneered by Stephen and Karen Byers in 1981 this milestone stands as a testament to the enduring success of this technology over the competition.

The company and its co-exhibitor Bohle Clearshield - Ritec's joint venture with Bohle AG - generated much interest and excitement among visitors from Europe, the USA, Asia and the Middle East. Indeed, the company showed that even 25 years on it is still dedicated to coming up with fresh ideas and innovations for a constantly changing and competitive market place.

The latest developments making their debut at the Show included new applications for ClearShield such as solar panels, the ClearShield Sandblast Protect aerosol spray for easy spray-on application, and ClearShield Heat Performance grade for use on glass and ceramics subjected to high temperatures, including ovenware and oven doors.

Ritec also launched its new Commercial Starter Packs containing a full range of specialist solutions for cleaning and protecting glass. These packs present potential customers with an ideal introduction to ClearShield and its well renowned proven technology. Also generating a lot of interest were recent developments in spraying equipment as Ritec unveiled the fully automatic V2000 Modular system.

Ritec's Boat, the River Art, was also a big hit at the Show and welcomed visitors from all areas of the glass and glazing industry to celebrate, network, exchange ideas and discuss market issues in a social environment. The River Art was also the venue for the official ClearShield 25th Anniversary presentation. Stephen and Karen Byers were presented with a glass commemorative plaque to mark this landmark in the company's history with colleagues, friends and peers from throughout the industry.

'Its been a great show for us and we have had many visitors to the stand in what is our 11th visit to Glasstec. We also took many orders on the stand, which was different from previous years, showing that visitors are recognising the superior quality of the system,' says Stephen Byers. 'ClearShield's versatility is certainly one of the keys to its continued success and its longevity is clearly something to celebrate and reflects the products track record out in the field. We will continue to invest in research and development to improve the technology even further to benefit our customers around the world. No doubt we will be back in 2008 with even more to say. We love glass and think it deserves protecting.'

REHAU joins BPF

REHAU has joined the British Plastics Federation (BPF) for the first time in its history. The move marks a shift in policy for the company, best known for its PVC-U window profile, plumbing and underfloor heating systems and renewable energy products, since it has previously not been part of any industry bodies or trade associations.

REHAU's decision to join the BPF has been prompted in part by the growing influence of the green lobby in the construction market and REHAU's view that it can have a positive influence on the outcome of forthcoming environmental specifications from within the independent body.

REHAU wants to promote PVC as an environmentally friendly material and, as one of the world's most technologically advanced polymer developers, feels that it can dispel many of the myths which have grown up around its use.

REHAU will be represented in the Federation in the key product areas of PVC-U windows and polymer pipework, and hopes to be able to affect judgements on critical issues such as the use of recycled material in PVC-U profile, assessment processes on energy efficiency, lifecycle costings and product life expectancies.

Markus Springer (pictured), Head of Product Design at REHAU, has been instrumental in securing membership.

He says: ‘REHAU has an exceptionally strong track record in the design and supply of sustainable energy solutions. We hope to be able to use this knowledge and experience within the BPF to help further the cause of polymer as a 'green' material and to ensure that current and new standards and specifications accurately reflect its performance capabilities.’

He adds: ‘This will be our primary focus but of course REHAU will also benefit from being able to network more closely with the key influencers within the polymer industry and to be more widely recognised as one of them.’

Dishing the Dirt with Pilkington Activ™

There are double celebrations in St Helens, where two of the most famous names in the area have scored major successes. St Helens Rugby League Club has finished top of the 2006/07 league, as the newly crowned engage super league cup champions after a comprehensive victory over Hull at the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. At the same time and only a few miles away, local manufacturer, Pilkington has announced a massive ten fold increase in sales of its Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass in just one year.

Now in a further link between club and company, St Helens star hooker Kieron Cunningham recently announced his retirement from the international scene and, affording himself the luxury of more space in his Merseyside home, erected a 11 x 5m bespoke split level Edwardian conservatory to house his rugby memorabilia and his beloved pool table. Cleaning such an expanse of glazing may have been a problem, even for the superfit star, but with the installation of Pilkington Activ™ self-cleaning glass throughout, Kieran can relax and allow the product do all the hard work. The vertical windows are glazed with Pilkington Activ™ with the roof enveloped in Pilkington Activ™ Blue, a product specifically designed for conservatories.

Activ™ Blue is not only self-cleaning but also has solar control properties helping to keep it cooler in the summer. Pilkington Activ™ has a virtually invisible dual action coating which reacts with UV rays to break down organic dirt on the surface of the glass and encourages rainwater flow down the glass in an even sheeting effect preventing rain droplets forming and washing away any remaining dirt. Thus the concept of self-cleaning glass becomes reality.

The units were constructed using the Pilkington Insulight concept, which allows two different types of Pilkington glass to be installed. In the case of Kieron’s extension, Pilkington Activ™ Blue on the outside is coupled with Pilkington K Glass™ to the inner pane, to combine solar control, self-cleaning and thermal insulation in one high performance solution. Local firm Excell Upvc designed and undertook the installation as registered installer of Pilkington Activ™ glass.

Having been involved in the rugby league scene for so many years, Keiron deserves the luxury that his new conservatory brings, and with the help of Pilkington Activ™, he can now relax. With the arduous task of cleaning windows eliminated, his only exertion is with his pool cue! 'The self-cleaning and solar-control glass is a huge bonus,' comments Kieron. 'I can easily regulate the temperature which is essential when I’m concentrating on my pool skills! And best of all it means I can spend more time relaxing than climbing up and down a ladder!'

Westport Windows on the Slide

When The Folding Sliding Door Company was looking to extend its range of bi-folding doors even further, to fully accommodate the requirements of the home improvement market, Westport Windows - advocate of the VEKA Matrix Fully Sculptured system - was enlisted to develop and manufacture its doors out of PVC-u as part of a commercial partnership agreement.

Traditionally producing its doors in-house out of aluminium and timber, the decision to manufacture a PVC-u version of the company’s successful door range was a natural progression, but one that would fall out of its specialist field of expertise. With this in mind, and impressed by the company's knowledge of PVC-u fabrication and the home improvement market, The Folding Sliding Door Company approached Westport Windows to undertake the task of manufacturing and marketing its product, keeping production solely in the UK.

The doors are manufactured to section sizes of 70mm deep by 56 mm wide and come in standard white, cherry, rosewood or wood grain finishes. The Matrix FS suite was chosen because it offers exceedingly high security specifications coupled with a softer, rounded look that enhances any home, be it modern or classical in style, and requires minimal maintenance.

‘These doors are the perfect addition to any family home regardless of size,’ Bernard continues. ‘For households that don't have space for a conservatory, or like the sound of 'outdoor-in spacious living', these doors are ideal and can be made to open inside or out depending on the brief. This product offers complete versatility and also comes with a tilt and slide facility, adapting perfectly to all weather conditions, whilst bringing light into your home.’

Manufactured to high standards in Westport's factory using machinery supplied by The Folding Sliding Door Company, all doors are Part M compliant and do not require a step, making them the ideal solution for families that require disabled access, have elderly residents, or children.

Established in 2004, by ex-VEKA Key Accounts Manager Bernard O'Malley, Westport Windows was set up to exclusively fabricate windows, doors and conservatories from of the VEKA Matrix Fully Sculptured suite. After selling the Fully Sculptured system for VEKA and seeing its customer base grow, Bernard soon realised the products full potential in the market place and decided to set up a business based solely on products manufactured using the VEKA FS suite. It was during this time that he had initial dealings with The Folding Sliding Door Company.

‘The decision to undertake this project as part of a commercial partnership agreement was mutual,’ comments Bernard. ‘When The Folding Sliding Door Company first approached me I already had an understanding of its product and requirements, and the company already had knowledge on the Fully Sculptured system and my working ethics. I was delighted to take on the responsibility of manufacturing, marketing and selling the product to the home improvement market, because I totally believe in it!’

An installation service is available for this product. For more information on the bi-folding door range, or any other products contact Westport Windows on (T): 01942 889333 or go to: http://www.westportwindows.com.

Technology Drives Market Demand

A Tamglass ProBend for crosswise bending will be upgraded at the 200,000 sq ft premises of the European Glass Group in London with a second section for longitudinal bending in October. The high capacity machine designed for mouldless bending and tempering of demanding large-size architectural glass will be the only one in the UK with both bending sections and which will process all types of clear and coated glass.

This upgrade will improve the European Glass Group's capability to serve the market as a specialist in architectural glass manufacturing. The company aims to provide a customer-driven operation through offering new high-technology solutions.

This latest investment is another milestone in the12 years of cooperation between European Glass and Tamglass. 'The cooperation between our companies has always been built on the combination of market drive and the optimum use of the latest technology to set new standards of quality and a range of solutions. Tamglass delivers the leading technology to us. This technology enables us to provide our end customers and the glass trade with industry-leading solutions according to the best quality standards and in accordance with the regulations set by legislation.'

Quality is critical

The use of large-sized curved tempered glass in buildings is increasing. The ProBend with the combined sections enables European Glass to provide architects and designers with much better design flexibility and a wider range of solutions. 'The state-of-the-art technology helps us produce curved glass with the same high quality as flat tempered glass. Furthermore, zero tooling bending enables us to manufacture larger sizes with greater accuracy and to higher levels of quality compared to machines that use moulds.'

The main criterion in the investment decision was to manufacture larger sizes and improve the quality: 'In special architectural glass manufacturing quality is especially critical. In our opinion, Tamglass is the leading company in the market in terms of focusing on quality. That is why we selected Tamglass'.

Technology for a wide range of solutions

In 2002 European Glass also installed a 7 m x 3.3 m Tamglass flat glass tempering plant, the largest in the world. As an architectural glass specialist, European Glass wants to continue to set new standards for the industry, by using the latest technology to deliver customer solutions. For example, the company has installed the largest IGU line within the UK and a Tamglass flat laminating line for tempered glass.

The company also has two other Tamglass flat tempering furnaces and a laminating line operating at its other facilities. European Glass Group has also announced the opening of a new manufacturing facility at Swindon UK later this year.

The Glassex Gold Club - The Perfect Business Environment

Deemed as the glass and glazing industry's one-stop-shop at which businesspeople can see, try and compare thousands of products and services from hundreds of suppliers, doing business at Glassex has now been made easier for exhibitors with the introduction of the Glassex Gold Club to the 2007 show.

To further extend its commitment to customer service, the organisers of Glassex '07 have devised the Gold Club scheme to enable exhibitors to extend the level and quality of hospitality at Glassex to their favoured lists of top clients and desired prospects, attracting the right people to their stands and promoting the 'feel good' factor.

Each exhibitor will be invited to nominate a maximum of 20 guests to receive a Glassex Gold Card pass, which gives them exclusive access to all areas of the show, and most importantly full use of the Glassex Gold Club lounge. Access to the lounge will be restricted to Gold Club members only and not exhibitors. The passes are expected to become an exclusive 'must-have' amongst the industry's perceived 'aristocracy'.

The Gold Club lounge has been designed to provide a luxurious environment in which members can conduct their daily business while reaping all of the benefits from being at the show, providing an ideal opportunity to network with other industry professionals as well as acting as the perfect base for their visit.

Members of the club can expect a wealth of benefits including free parking, advanced personalised show planning, a personalised booking service for seminars and guaranteed seats, access to the Club Lounge business facilities, private meeting space and refreshments.

Commenting on the introduction of The Glassex Gold Club, Head of Sales for Glassex Dave Broxton said: ‘This is the perfect opportunity for exhibitors to make the show work for them by offering their special customers special treatment and making the whole experience more enjoyable and relaxing all round. The introduction of the Glassex Gold Club lounge and facilities continues the emphasis at Glassex of improving the visitor experience. We want to help build on the bonds that exist between exhibitors and visitors, giving our clients more control in determining the outcome of their show. Glassex is already a successful business-to-business forum, but by listening to what our customers want and working with them we are developing a better show in every facet.’

All nominations should be submitted via the Exhibitor Manual or sent directly to Glassex by the end of January.

Pultruded Windows on New Blackpool Business Park Beat Seaside Weathering Problems

New window technology is being pioneered at Whitehills Business Park in Blackpool to cope with salt laden air and the effects of expansion and contraction due to temperature variation. The architect, Croft Goode Ltd, which has offices nearby in Kirkham, in association with contractor RBL Construction both working for Errigal Developments, selected pultruded Samson windows from Octaveward in preference to aluminium or Upvc.

Whitehills Business Park comprises a mixed development of light industrial units and offices designed for small businesses that are expanding. In addition to a high standard of construction and finish, the development includes ample access and parking and is conveniently located at the end of the M55. On a site of 8650 square metres, ten industrial units have been created in three blocks totalling 1500 square metres, along with 11 office units in seven blocks totalling 2400 square metres. Earlier phases of the development have been eagerly taken up.

Despite being some distance from the sea, the air can still be salt laden. Anodised architectural aluminium frames are susceptible to long term damage affecting their appearance and performance when exposed in saline environments. This problem would not affect Upvc frames but on larger windows particularly, Upvc is subject to differential thermal expansion between the frames and surrounding materials. This creates a sealing difficulty and a lack of thermal rigidity.

Samson windows from Octaveward provide a good all round answer. They are made from a pultruded thermoset plastic resin, with embedded glass fibre reinforcement, to ensure the profiles are strong, rigid and weather resistant surface. Factory finished in a colour to match the feature infill cladding panels, the units harmonise with the development.

Samson frame sections are similar to aluminium and slimmer than the Upvc alternative. They will retain their strength and will not be subject to differential expansion when under intense solar radiation. 'Reassuringly, from our perspective, the frames have a 35 year guarantee and the finish a 15 year guarantee,' explained the architect.

Lister’s Customers Just Have More Energy

Since Lister Trade Frames of Stoke on Trent upgraded all its standard Elitis windows to the BFRC 'C' energy rated standard the company says that it has seen remarkable interest from the public in its products.

It seems that with all the discussion in the news about global warming, fuel shortages, energy taxes, increases in fuel prices and environmental issues, people are looking for products that will benefit the environment and save them some money too.

‘We have seen a marked increase in the number of enquiries for our energy rated products’ says Mark Warren, Lister’s Managing Director. ‘We now offer 'C' as our standard window to all our customers at no extra cost, but we are also getting regular enquiries for our 'A' rated products too.’

A recent installation carried out by one of Lister’s customers demonstrates the potential that these new energy rated products have:

Keith Wooliscroft of Wooliscoft's Windows and Conservatories was asked to provide a quotation for the energy rated Elitis products. Nothing too special in that you might think, but when he arrived at the property he was surprised to see that the house was already double glazed with PVCu windows and doors.
Not only that, but they had been installed just two years ago by a national window company! So why did the customers want to change them? Simply put, he wanted to replace the 'below standard' (his words) product that he had with the Elitis Energy Windows. Basically he wanted an upgrade. And he knew that not only was the Elitis product better, but it would save him money in the long term on his fuel bills and that was also good for the environment.

‘It's not unusual now for our customers to be replacing old PVC windows with our new ones’ says Mark. ‘But it is unusual to see this happen when the original windows are still almost new. It certainly demonstrates that energy rated products are becoming more and more sought after, and we should all be glad of that.’

Earlier this year Lister had another customer (Sterling Windows) complete the UK's first 'A' energy rated installation. ‘Lister has certainly put an awful lot of energy into developing and promoting energy rated products,’ concludes Mark. ‘However, with stories like the one mentioned above, we may just be pushing against an open door.’

Reflex Glass Creates a Landmark

Work has begun on the £300,000 refurbishment project for the main road Leicester manufacturing facility of reflex glass.

The architect’s computer visual illustrates how the finished project will appear in a few months time. The 20,000 sq ft building is being re-roofed and clad with the latest high tech composite panel system. The translucent roof material achieves a U-value of 0.4 and allows good light transmission into the factory area. It is expected that this will improve the working environment considerably by utilising as much natural daylight as possible.

The front offices are to receive a structural frameless glass façade 40mtrs x 5mtrs high made up of reflex glass to create a stunning visual effect to the building. As this side of the building is subject to strong sunlight during most of the day, the offices currently suffer from overheating due to solar heat gain - and is a very uncomfortable place to be on sunny days.

The existing PVCU windows containing standard Low E glass will be replaced with 28mm argon filled 'reflex plus' glass units. This approach will not only prevent overheating during the Summer months, but also reduce any heat lost through the window frames, as these have been made unnecessary by the frameless glass system. The system will be made up of glass units 3mtr x 1mtr which fix directly into the building itself via cleverly designed stainless steel spiders.

‘The PVCU window frames only lasted five years before they failed, and rather than replace them with a commercial aluminium system our architect suggested we look at modern alternatives which make window frames redundant’, explains reflex glass Managing Director Scott Nicholas.

In keeping with the frameless theme, the reception area also features glass doors with no window or door frames. This area is also being updated with the 1960's marble staircase being replaced with a contemporary glass and stainless steel curved design.
The modernisation is part of a £1.5 million investment programme that began with the purchase of the freehold premises and continued with the installation of a 40-metre glass manufacturing line last year.

The exterior refurbishment is expected to be complete by February 2007 and it is hoped that a landmark building has been created which sits on the busy A46 Leicester to Nottingham main road just off Junction 21a of the M1.

Specification Stimulates Demand for Composite Doors

JELD-WEN, one of the UK’s leading joinery manufacturers, has seen a huge increase in demand for composite doorsets for renovations and new build projects in the public sector.

After signing an agreement to supply 80,000 doorsets to Sheffield Homes, as part of a five year deal, JELD-WEN has secured a number of high profile projects to supply its high specification composite doorsets to local authorities and housing associations across the UK.

Mark Roberts, product manager at JELD-WEN, said: 'Composite doors have huge benefits in terms of energy efficiency, as they have six times better insulation than other door types. Housing associations and local authorities recognise their benefits in terms of improved thermal performance and durability and the great lifetime value that they offer.'

With Government figures showing that there are around 756,000 burglaries every year, JELD-WEN’s composite doors provide peace of mind as they meet with Secured by Design requirements. Manufactured from high impact resistant GRP, these doorsets are extremely robust against attack and feature a multipoint locking mechanism, which enhances security even further. Committed to a Sustainable Future

Not only is aluminium the most abundant metallic element on earth, with deposits calculated to last for 300 years, but also recycling could extend that life by another 300 years at least. The reality of this can be seen in one example: the recycling of 96% of the aluminium removed from the old Wembley football stadium prior to its rebuilding.

This vividly illustrates the eco-friendly credentials aluminium displays, and which Beaufort Secure Design is utilising in its promotion of aluminium's sustainability as a window material. Working with all stakeholders in the supply chain, the company is promoting the recycling of up to 80% of extruded aluminium waste and off-cuts, as well as the recycling of entire window units at the end of their useful life.

Thus, in reality, with aluminium capable of being endlessly recycled, this in turn brings massive savings (some estimates put it at 95%) in energy costs in relation to the original production process. Not only that, but its ease of sorting and recovery is another major plus factor. Taken a step further and looked at collectively these benefits all add up to an important contribution to reducing whole-life building costs in any industry sector.

This train of thought can be extrapolated - indeed, it already has been to some extent - to 2020 when some see the entire architectural aluminium product sector focused entirely on the use of recycled material.

Good recycling credentials without correspondingly good performance credentials, however, are essentially a waste of time. Aluminium, however, top scores in both departments.

When it comes to lifespan, aluminium is at least the equal of timber, whilst outlasting it in many instances, especially with the research done and subsequent production of material finishes which now need minimum maintenance.

Secondly, aluminium delivers equally well in terms of performance in relation to the levels of conservation demanded by the Kyoto Agreement, whilst also being in full compliance with the latest Building Regulations.

Looked at in their entirety, therefore, it is hardly surprising that the environmental arguments that led to the rejection of uPVC window and door systems are, in turn, leading to the increased specification - and consequent sales - of aluminium window and door systems.

Millennium Hosts CAB

The recent Council for Aluminium in Building regional members meeting was held at the prestigious Cardiff Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay.

This was the first time the CAB had held a members meeting in Wales and was hopefully the first of many.

Members and their guests were treated to a boat tour of the Cardiff Bay area where extensive development had been completed with much more to come including a new Olympic standard swimming pool which is to be put forward as the venue for the 2012 Olympic Games. After a short break for refreshments the members were informed of a full 2007 calendar which includes a technical conference in May and a new European Renovation Awards competition which is being organised in the UK by the CAB which takes place in March.

Roger Phillips, the incoming President gave his inaugural members introduction where he called on fabricators and installing sub-contractors to sign up for membership of the CAB in order to take advantage of the many benefits the association has to offer.

The guest speaker was Jonathan Adams, Special Projects Director of Capita Percy Thomas who designed the Millennium Centre. Jonathan described the thought process behind the design of the Centre which is principally a theatre and concert venue. One of the important features of the building design which makes very good use of aluminium in its construction is the use of materials which will weather, making the building more attractive as it gets older. The presentation was followed by a three course dinner on the large second floor lobby.

Justin Ratcliffe, Chief Executive Director of the CAB commented on the excellent turnout of members and guests, 'It is good to see so many members and their guests meeting in such a prestigious venue and we expect to be back in Wales again in the near future. Our next meeting is to take place at Stirling Castle where it is planned to have up to 200 members and guests and will be our most ambitious members meeting venue to date.'

Further information about membership of the CAB can be found on the website at http://www.c-a-b.org.uk or by phoning the CAB office in Stonehouse on 01453 828851.

Daedalian Helps Ruth Press the Case for Conservation

Scheduled to go on tour in the North West later this year is a fascinating exhibition by the sculptor Ruth Moilliet, who has appointed artistic glass designer Daedalian Glass to produce a series of 'glass-scapes' of wild flowers.

With the pressures exerted by industrial and urban expansion, many wild flower meadows are in danger of becoming increasingly rare in today's rural landscapes.

In the exhibition which seeks to bring this home in a strong visual manner, Ruth has used laminated glass panels as flower presses for a combination of real flowers, digital images that have been cut out and 'pressed' between glass and images taken from Ruth's drawings and sandblasted onto glass.

The exhibit features 18 flowers that are becoming rare - among them cowslips, poppies and cornflowers - and these are featured in 2m high laminated panels produced by Daedalian's Davia Walmsley and her colleagues.

Davia Walmsley, who founded Daedalian with her husband, Chris, just over 20 years ago, worked with Ruth Miolliet over a six month period to bring the concept to reality.

‘I'd worked in glass before,’ says Ruth, but to a much smaller scale of 40cm x 30cm., creating what I call a window of flowers between up to 20-30 sheets of glass.

‘I'd discussed projects with Daedalian on a couple of occasions in the past, and then the Arts Officer for Lancashire recommended I talk to the company about this project, which was much bigger than anything I'd tackled before.

‘I loved working with them, as much as anything because they allowed me to get involved so that I was working alongside them and gaining a real understanding of the processes they used. This was very satisfying, because working through an idea can be quite a stressful process, but they were a great support.’

As happens with many Daedalian projects, the company produced smaller scale samples before going to the full-size end-result, and this was another area that gave Ruth confidence in Daedalian as working partners.

As a result of this first experience, she sees the relationship they developed as an ongoing thing.

The panels are displayed vertically at random when exhibited to create the impression of a wildflower meadow. This is then set off by daylight and sunlight filtering through the glass creating different effects at different times of the day.

The reality of the pressed flowers is tempered by their loss of colour once picked and pressed, whilst the digital images present a contrasting riot of colour reminiscent of a wildflower meadow, and the sandblasted images give a crystaline effect.

Individually, all three concentrate the attention through the difference in texture and colour, whilst collectively they forcibly bring home to Ruth's audience the extent of the loss we and subsequent generations face through the destruction of another part of our environment.

The first leg of the tour was at the Gallery Oldham in Lancashire. This ended in September and two more dates have been confirmed at Warrington (in December) and Runcorn (in February).

Meanwhile, Daedalian has worked with Ruth on a second project of smaller panels, using the digital wild flower images, which is currently on display at the Barbed Gallery in Barnes, South West London.

Volkswagen Forges Ahead with Hybrid Battery Development

Volkswagen AG is helping to establish a special, donated, Chair for Applied Material Sciences for Energy Storage and Energy Conversion, the only professorship of its kind anywhere in Europe. A contract which sets out the terms of the contribution was recently handed over to Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, where the new chair will commence work in 2007 with the joint backing of Degussa AG, Chemetall GmbH and Volkswagen AG.

The purpose of the co-operation is the further development of electric batteries for hybrid-driven automobiles. Research will be centred on lithium-ion batteries, the aim being to eventually replace the nickel-metal-hybrid batteries conventionally used in hybrid vehicles today with the lithium-ion alternative which holds the promise of added power and power density as well as longer life. The new professorship will set out to develop innovative materials to further enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries and reduce the costs.

'For Volkswagen AG, advances in the area of energy storage are one of the keys to further advancing drive technology. The deal sealed today lays the foundation stone for a very promising collaboration between industry and university-based research,' said Prof Jürgen Leohold, head of Volkswagen Group Research.

Chemetall is the leading supplier of high-end lithium compounds, while Degussa enjoys the reputation of a pioneering manufacturer of electrodes and separators as battery components. This special professorship - for which joint financing has been agreed for an initial period of five years - further substantiates the fact that hybrid automobile technology is a central element of the Volkswagen AG drive and fuel strategy.
