They
Made it a Night to Remember
The
industry's most sparkling event, the G06 Awards, paid tribute to its finest
at a magnificent Presentation Gala Dinner hosted by celebrity impressionist,
Alistair McGowan, at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole on 15th September.
Close to 700 individuals from all walks of the glass, glazing and fenestration
business joined forces to celebrate in style, excellence and innovation
amongst deserving members of the industry.
The
event, the best so far of the three put on by organiser Tony Higgin, has
received positive feedback from its sponsors, several of which have confirmed
their participation in next year's event, as well as the judges who reported
that the significant increase in entries were all of a very high standard.
The audience enjoyed an exceptional performance by Alistair McGowan who
was witty, respectful and entertaining as he handed out the trophies while
joking about the industry and even impersonating one of the winners! It
also raised a substantial sum for Hope House Children's Hospice Charity
through GM Fundraising.
The winners were:
Social Housing Project of the Year - Sovereign Group
Energy Efficiency Initiative of the Year -Edgetech
Promotional Campaign of the Year - Pilkington Activ
Health and Safety Initiative of the Year - Kawneer
Specialist of the Year - Edgetech
Glass project of the Year - Alumet Systems (UK)
Glass Design Student Award - Chris Edwards
Customer Care Award - Safestyle UK
Training and Development Initiative of the Year - Lister Trade Frames
Conservatory Installer of the Year - T & K Home Improvements Ltd
Installer of the Year - Warmseal Windows(Newcastle)
Glass Company of the Year - Glass UK
Fabricator of the Year - Masterframe UK
The Awards Scheme itself is primarily designed to promote the positive
aspects of our business and reward achievement and best practice which
I believe is intrinsic to an industry which all too often suffers bad
press, commented Tony Higgin. However, it also brings a cross
section of people together under one roof to network, exchange ideas and
discuss market issues within a good spirited and social environment. The
benefits speak for themselves and I'm delighted that the G-Awards have
become a firm fixture on the industry's calendar.

Guests
Bond with Bohle at G06 Awards - Literally!
When
lavish functions like the recent G06 Awards take place, few are aware
of the huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to prepare for
such impressive events. But the sight of a couple smartly dressed for
the evening working away and totally absorbed in a quite corner of the
banqueting room just minutes before the proceedings were to begin would
have caused some curious glances. But for Tony and Jackie England of Specialist
Glass and Mirror Company GGP of Worcester, this was one of the most important
jobs they had undertaken and, with just minutes to spare before 700 guests
filed into the luxuriously appointed room, the pressure was building too.
The
strange scene of two elegantly dressed people beavering away with a Bohle
UV Bonding kit and a number of pieces of glass came about when a horrified
Tony Higgin, organiser of the G06 Awards, unpacked the dozen trophies
that were to be presented to the category winners during the evening.
Three of the trophies had broken away from their bases and, with just
a couple of hours to spare Tony sent an SOS to Bohle boss Gary Dean to
see if he could help. Gary in turn phoned Tony and Jackie, two of his
guests for the evening who were already on the way to the venue, to see
if they could do anything and as luck would have it they had a UV bonding
kit in the boot of their car.
You can imagine my horror when I found that three of the trophies
were broken, explained Tony Higgin. People were already enjoying
their champagne in anticipation of the evening's entertainment and proceedings
and I had trophies in pieces. I called Gary and he immediately contacted
his guests - I can't believe our luck that they had the UV bonding kit
with them - I am very grateful to Tony and Jackie who showed immense skill
and composure to repair the trophies. After their work the trophies were
perfect and no-one had any idea of the disaster that had averted.
Gary Dean was happy to have helped: The most I carry is a Swiss
Army knife so for my guests to have one of our UV bonding kits in their
car was a blessing. When I asked Tony and Jackie to join us for the evening
I really didn't think they would be asked to work! But they took up the
challenge and saved the day with no-one any wiser.
Pilkington
Activ Cleans Up At The G06 Awards
The
national advertising and promotional campaign that has resulted in sales
of Pilkington Activ(tm) multiplying ten-fold in just a year and boosting
sales for thousands of installers, has been voted 'Promotional Campaign
of the Year 2006' in the G06 Awards that took place recently.
The Award recognises the efforts of the Pilkington Activ marketing
team in the development and execution of its £2 million 'Keep up
World' spring campaign that involved extensive TV, newspaper and magazine
advertising, coupled with intensive public relations through key consumer
media, and use of the Internet with a special web site. The theme of the
engaging campaign highlighted imaginary and dubious inventions and suggested
consumers should choose an invention that really worked: Pilkington Activ
self-cleaning glass. The campaign has been successful in not only driving
sales of the product to more than 50,000 metres2 per month whilst also
providing a welcome boost for thousands of window and conservatory installers.

Pilkington's
Matt Buckley (left) and Ian Spokes accept the Award for Promotional Campaign
of the Year for Pilkington Activ(tm) from Tony Higgin and Alistair McGowan,
assisted by Morei Higgin.
Matt
Buckley, Marketing Director for Pilkington Building Products UK and the
man credited with driving the campaign forward, could not conceal his
delight as the Award was read out: 'Perhaps I am supposed to be very restrained
and pretend that I was confident all along we would win,' he remarked
afterwards, 'But I wasn't. This is a fantastic achievement for all of
us at Pilkington and recognition for the gamble we took and the hard work
the internal team and our external agencies have put into this. This has
been great fun to work on and comes just as the latest advertising hits
the screens and presses... absolutely delighted!'
Ian Spokes, who heads the team of Pilkington Activ product specialists
in the UK, collected the Award with Matt Buckley: 'Being in the front-line
I have seen the results of the campaign at first hand and didn't need
any marketing stats to see the difference the promotional campaign has
made to our sales but more importantly of course, the sales of our customers.
It has come at the right time and the market has really taken to Pilkington
Activ. I might even buy a round of drinks!
WHS
Halo Scores a Top Treble at G06
An
excellent showing from WHS Halo customers at the G06 awards last Friday
(September 15th) saw three businesses emerging triumphant in some of the
most keenly fought categories. In these, the third awards since their
inception, WHS Halo customers were crowned Fabricator of the Year and
Installer of the Year; and won the Training & Development Award.
The
winning companies were:
1. Masterframe (Witham) Fabricator of the
Year
2. Warmseal Windows (Newcastle) Installer of the Year; and
3. Lister Trade Frames (Stoke on Trent) Training & Development
Award
This year's success follows a bumper number of wins by WHS Halo customers
last year; and another treble at the inaugural G04 event. It was also
something of a case of déjà vu; as all three businesses
were big winners at G05 too. On that occasion, Warmseal scooped both Installer
(again), and Health & Safety Initiative, of the Year; while Masterframe
bagged the Customer Care award and Energy Efficiency Initiative of the
Year. The Training & Development Award presented to Lister Trade Frames
also completed a double for the company, having collected the Fabricator
of the Year Award at G05.
Top comedian Alistair McGowan from BBC TVs Big Impression
took on the role of MC for the evening at the Hilton Birmingham
Metropole Hotel; and presented winners with their trophies to the applause
from more than 700 luminaries from the glazing industry and their guests.
Sam Kennedy, WHS Halos Consumer Division Sales & Marketing Director,
said of the award hat-trick: 'The G Awards have quickly established themselves
as a credible means of recognising the talent and quality that exists
within our industry. Once again we were delighted to support the awards
as a main sponsor, an involvement made even more delightful now that our
customers have also been shown to be at the forefront of professionalism
in the industry. To see our customers win in three of the categories was
a great result especially when you consider that a number of categories
were not relevant.'

G06
Success For Emplas And T&K
Emplas
Window Systems celebrated its 21st birthday in style at the G06 Awards
as the only trade fabricator to be chosen as a finalist in the prestigious
'Fabricator of the Year Award', while at the same time its retail subsidiary,
T & K Home Improvements, triumphed as winner of the 'Conservatory
Installer of the Year Award'.
Kevin
Johnson, Managing Director of both Emplas and T&K, said:
'We are delighted with our success at G06, and particularly that the industry
has paid recognition to the high levels of product quality and customer
service for which both companies are renowned. And I am especially pleased
for all our staff as I am proud of their achievements over the last 21
years'.
Kevin continued:
'Both Emplas and T & K are fortunate to have very stable workforces,
many of whom have been with the companies for 15 years or more. This experience
and expertise is one of the keys to providing consistently high standards
in the delivery of quality products backed by good customer service. As
a result, Emplas has had good growth this year and is attracting quality
window installers and retail companies. I expect to see similar growth
in 2007'.
Emplas was established in 1985 by Kevin Johnson and manufactures in excess
of 1200 frames per week using the Profile 22 60 mm chamfered and 70 mm
fully sculptured suites. The company is involved in all the main market
sectors, but specialises in supply to trade installers. This year Emplas
has announced a number of new initiatives and products, including a range
of 270 standard conservatories that effectively compete with B&Q,
stable doors, vertical sliders, and composite doors.
The company is committed to the highest standards of product quality and
has an impressive list of quality accreditations. The Emplas customer
support range is extensive and includes bespoke individual marketing campaigns
for customers, as well as a special package for fabricators who may wish
to cease fabrication and buy in frames.
T & K Home Improvements has also benefited from considerable investment
during the last year. In 2005 the company unveiled an extensive conservatory
village 'Conservatory World', which features 15 fully-furnished conservatories.
Many options of styles, finishes, fittings and furniture are shown to
full effect, allowing customers to make informed decisions when choosing
a conservatory.
And for customers who prefer to do the 'leg work' from the comfort of
their home, www.tkhi.co.uk is an innovative website that includes virtual
tours of all the conservatories in 'Conservatory World'.
T & K maintains a strong culture for customer service and this has
led to high levels of customer satisfaction, which in turn produces many
recommendations and a loyal customer base. Four years ago, conservatories
accounted for less than 20% of T & K's turnover, whereas today that
figure has increased to 73%, effectively transforming the company into
a conservatory installation specialist.

Glass
UK takes Title for G06 Glass Company of the Year
I
see winning this year's G06 Award as Glass Company of the Year as a potential
springboard to further success, said Rod Milicevic, the company's
founder, on hearing news of the award on his return from taking part in
this year's Cannonball 8000 rally between London and Budapest.
The kudos that goes with winning this award is only one part of it, the
impression it creates with existing and potential customers is such that
past winners have been able to use it as a stepping stone to further success.
Already successfully operating from its new factory, Glass UK is now looking
forward to making the most of the next 12 months as the G06 Glass Company
of the Year.

Receiving
the award for Glass UK - From left to right, Morei Higgin, Nigel Sissons
of SAPA on behalf of the Glass and Glazing Federation, Warren Evans, Sales
Director - Glass UK and Geoff Robins, Commercial Director - Glass UK with
Alistair McGowan, host of the G06 Awards.
I
think it's true to say that at Glass UK we manage to mix business with
pleasure in a number of ways. First, by offering service and products
that both make us market leaders, and secondly - and I'm not sure about
the level of pleasure involved because it was darned hard work - by recently
rallying 1200 miles across Europe with Neil Sharda to raise money for
a children's charity.
That typifies the company, says Rod, in that everybody
works hard, and gets a lot of pleasure out of it, but we also play hard
which keeps us on our toes and that's reflected back into the business.
The company's project and product portfolio obviously impressed the judges,
clearly indicated by the fact that this was the second year Glass UK had
been nominated in this category.
Meanwhile, the list of complementary products like Blink intelligent glass,
Glass FX colour coating using the GlassKote system and its sheer glass
Sensoriums made Glass UK's entry one of the strongest it has submitted
to any industry awards competition in recent years.
While I'm not going to emulate one or two recent Oscar winners by
bursting into tears, joked Rod Milicevic, this does give me
a perfect opportunity to thank everyone at Glass UK for the effort they've
put in to make the company the success it is today.
The G06 Award is really the icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned.

Synseal
takes Pole Position at Glassex 2007
Synseal,
window and conservatory systems company, has announced it will take the
pole position at Glassex 2007.
Nick Dutton, Synseal's Sales and Marketing Director, comments: We
are delighted to take the pole position at Glassex in 2007 for a fourth
year in a row. There's been a lot of speculation about the future of the
show, but after speaking with Dave Broxton we were encouraged with his
planned changes for next year, especially his plans to make it more relevant
to visitors. Much of the industry has been through massive changes, and
it's important for bigger companies to maintain support for the number
one show. Synseal is looking forward to another successful show in 2007.
Heading up the Glassex team is Dave Broxton: The whole team is delighted
that one of the industrys leading companies is supporting the changes
we are making for Glassex 2007. It's an important year for us, and Synseal's
commitment to the show can only be good for the industry as a whole.
Tony
Crutcher Rejoins Kestrel-BCE as Sales and Marketing Director
KESTREL-BCE,
one of the UKs leading manufacturers of PVC-U and PVC-UE roofline,
cladding, window board and trim products, has appointed Tony Crutcher
as Sales and Marketing Director. The appointment is part of a number of
recent developments at the company, signifying a new era of growth and
profitability.
Tony
has been invited to return to Kestrel-BCE by Managing Director Paul Neilson
after an eight-year absence from the firm. The move marks the reforming
of an old team to spearhead a new drive for product innovation,
improved customer service and distribution, focusing on the specification
and new build market.
In his previous career at Kestrel-BCE, Tony pioneered the introduction
of several unique PVC-UE roofline products, in particular the K-Wave system
of scallop bargeboards with a sealed edge, installed in over 10,000 houses
nationwide.
With Paul Neilson at the helm, and a strong UK sales force, Tony believes
Kestrel-BCE is well placed to serve a growing customer base.
Says Tony:
'In a highly competitive market, winning increased market share will be
a challenge, but its one that we believe Kestrel-BCE is now in good
shape to achieve. We can build on a well-established reputation for quality
and value in 'fitter-friendly' products with continual product innovation,
particularly in the areas of colour match and durability.'
Kestrel-BCE is aiming for the highest standards of reliability and responsiveness
in customer service, backed by investment in state-of-the-art manufacturing
and distribution facilities. The companys 140,000 sq ft factory
in Scunthorpe keeps 100% control of production, raw material sourcing
and blending of its PVC-U and PVC-UE profiles, enabling the company to
achieve consistent high quality and value through lean manufacturing to
ISO 9000 standards.
Equally important to the companys strategy are purpose-designed
warehousing facilities, near Stoke-on-Trent, which provide a central hub
for efficient UK distribution, guaranteeing ready availability to Kestrel
customers nationwide.
'Kestrel now has the personnel and infrastructure necessary to meet the
expectations of our customers for service, quality, availability and range.
We are looking forward to some exciting times ahead,' says Tony.

Advantage
Trades Up to Windowlink
Windowlink
has developed a pricing program for PVC-U products sold through trade
counters supplied by trade manufacturer Advantage Windows and Conservatories.
The tailored software enables branches, including Advantage's Window Installers
Warehouses, to provide instant quotations for a wide range of Advantage
products, from windows and conservatories to plastic building ancillaries
and door products. Once confirmed as official orders, quotes are accepted
by Advantage for manufacturing online.
Cheshire-based Advantage already offers a bespoke version of Windowlink's
Focus Plus presentation and pricing software to allow its customers to
price orders for doors and windows alongside the homeowner. Following
the success of this initiative the company recognised the potential of
offering a similar support solution as part of its Window Installers Warehouse
(WIW) concept.
WIW has been set up by Advantage to help trade counters maximise their
business potential with a reliable source of top quality products at competitive
prices, plus the backing of a major manufacturer. Danny Hague, Advantage's
Group Commercial Director explains: In the fast moving trade counter
environment customers want accurate prices on the spot. With Windowlink's
software WIW staff can produce a quote at the click of a mouse - it's
a great sales tool.
In addition to immediate pricing the software provides an ancillary checklist
to ensure all the necessary components are included in the quotation.
Trade counter staff can deliver a professional service with speed and
efficiency, which in turn will boost sales productivity within the branch.
Windowlink is working closely with Advantage's IT department to install
the software in participating branches. Danny Hague concludes: We
are really impressed with Windowlink's support and flexibility. Every
trade counter has different requirements in terms of product mix based
on their geographic location and customer profile, so each one receives
a personal visit and is given the necessary training to get them up and
running. So far 30 customers, of which 18 are WIW branches, are using
the software and many more are interested in taking it on.

Dow
Corning to Launch Quality-Assurance Initiative
Dow
Corning will be launching a quality-assurance initiative for the European
structural glazing and insulating glass market at Glasstec 2006.
'The move is aimed at bolstering Dow Corning's global leadership in structural
bonding and sealing solutions in the construction sector. The initiative
(scheduled to be formally announced at the Glasstec industry fair in Duesseldorf
on Thursday, Oct. 26th), is aimed at the entire construction industry
value chain - from real-estate owners to architects, facade consultants
and engineers, system suppliers, fabricators and applicators' Dow Corning
said.
The silicone producer declined to provide further details ahead of Glasstec.
But Dow Corning executives indicated that they believe that structural
glazing - a facade technology developed more than 30 years ago and which
eliminates the need for traditional mechanical fastening - makes it possible
to meet increased performance requirements in the new building and renovation
market.
'Silicone-based structural glazing provides exceptional performance in
terms of safety, durability and sustainability. We are convinced that
it provides a cost-effective answer to many of todayís challenges
in building design and construction,' said Eric Mannaerts, Dow Corning
European Industry Director, Global Construction Industry.
With structural glazing, the silicone in the adhesive bonds chemically
with panels made from glass, stone, metal or wood and the curtain-wall
frame, creating strong and durable adhesion. This bond becomes part of
the structural fabric of the building, offering exceptional resistance
to thermal stress, earthquakes and high winds, as well as bomb blasts,
fire and intrusion.
Structurally glazed facades insulate the building from heat and cold with
a continuous outer skin. The technology's great flexibility allows architects
and engineers to innovate by designing environmentally active buildings,
with facade-integrated photovoltaics or mobile, 'living' facade systems
which adapt themselves to solar radiation, temperature, wind and shadow.

Sash
Scores Top Marks!
'They order, we deliver! Simple yet effective, this statement sums
up the performance of the logistics department at Sash Windows (UK). In
a recent customer survey, the department scored a whopping 92% rating
overall of good or above. Even more impressive is the fact that 58% of
participants rated the departments performance as excellent.
We are responsible for the transport of the orders, says Brian
Scott, Despatch Manager at Sash. Co-ordinating transport with delivery
times and schedules can be a mountainous task, but we have it covered!
We train our staff to the highest standards of customer care and each
one knows exactly what needs to be done and in what order, to ensure fast
order deliveries and satisfied customers.
Even more remarkable but not entirely unexpected, are the results from
the order processing department, where a score of 100% was achieved. This
department had also achieved 100% in the previous survey, and were confident
in maintaining its record of excellence. The orders come in, we
process them, the customer is happy! says Darren Count, head of
department. Our system is programmed for no delays and once processed,
the orders are immediately dispatched for delivery.
The quarterly surveys have been designed to identify any problem areas
quickly, withy the numerical results providing Sash with an instant overview
of how each department is faring. This is done in direct comparison with
other departments as well as providing a comprehensive Key Performance
Indictor. Customers are simply asked to rate key performance area out
of 5, with 1 denoting excellence and 5, very poor.
The surveys are crucial in determining our performance in the eyes
of our customers, comments Jo Fearnes, Marketing Manager. With
such impressive results for both the logistics and order processing departments,
it proves that Sash works efficiently as a team. As long as we continue
to provide the highest levels of service, the company will go from strength
to strength in a growing market.
Long
Term Partnership Secures Major Specification for Securistyle
The UK window hardware manufacturer, Securistyle, is continuing its long-term
partnership with window fabrication company, Sharrow Industries, as part
of a project to refurbish 48,000 homes managed by Sheffield Homes.
Already
two years in, the project will see the replacement of windows, doors,
heating systems, kitchens and bathrooms. Due to the size of the project,
Sharrow Industries, Sheffield Homes' own fabrication unit, has contracted
several window fabricators, including WHS-Halo, Yorkshire Windows, Beeline
Doncaster and Remploy.
A range of Securistyle's friction hinges and handles has been selected
for the project, which includes the Defender Standard, Defender Restricted
and Defender Egress hinge, as well as the Virage handle.
Sheffield Homes was set up by Sheffield City Council in 2004 to manage
the day to day running of around 48,000 council homes and deliver a major
programme of government investment, the largest of its kind in the country.
Geoff Harrison, maintenance team leader of the Investment Services Group
at Sheffield Homes, said, This ten year project will involve us
in the refurbishment of properties all over Sheffield, so we need companies
we can rely on. We have been working with Securistyle for over ten years
now and have continually been impressed with their quality, cost, service,
design and manufacture, which meets all of Sheffield Homes' requirements.
Vivienne Taylor, Securistyle specifications manager, said, We have
worked closely in partnership with Sharrow Industries and Sheffield Homes
for a number of years now, offering advice and information on British
Standards, Best Value and Secured By Design. We always listen to their
needs to ensure that the projects run smoothly and that issues such as
fire egress and child safety are addressed.
The Defender Standard hinge has an asymmetric location system for reliable
weather sealing to BS6375 Part 1. The Defender Restricted hinge is used
for child safety, tested to BS6375 Part 2, and the Egress hinge allows
casement windows to open to a full 90º for emergency exit to comply with
the British Standard BS5588 Part 1: 1990 and Building Regulations Approved
Document B for fire escape windows. The Virage handle is ergonomically
designed for comfort and has a positive stop on offset espagnolette and
cockspur to ensure accurate in-line closure.

WindowPlus
First in Scotland to Achieve Energy Rating
WindowPlus Ltd in Glasgow is the first Scottish PVCu window manufacturer
to achieve a British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) energy rating.
The company has achieved B, C and D ratings for its Spectus Elite 70 casement
window range through BM TRADA Certification Ltd, one of only two independent
agencies appointed by BFRC to carry out the scheme.
WindowPlus was established as a family business in 1984, manufacturing
windows, doors, vertical sliders and conservatories for the replacement
window industry. The company also supplies to housing associations, architects
and the DIY market.
As Robert Tierney, General Manager, explained, 'The window industry is
highly competitive and in response to this we decided to target the BFRC
rating to add value to our products, with a view to giving both our customers
and ourselves a further advantage over competitors.'
The company's decision has been fully supported by Spectus Window Systems.
'The Spectus Elite 70 is one of the most advanced window systems in Europe,'
said Mr Tierney.
'That, plus the high level of marketing and technical support provided,
will help us to spread the word and give us a further edge on quality.'
Spectus in fact employs its own BFRC-certified simulators who produce
the calculations required for the energy rating process, testimony to
its own commitment to the scheme.
The BFRC scheme is gathering momentum in England, where it is already
included in the Building Regulations. It is also supported by the Energy
Saving Trust and Mr Tierney believes that it will soon gain a foothold
in Scotland. 'We felt it was important for us to take full advantage of
an excellent opportunity,' he added.

Tierney, General Manager, WindowPlus (left) with Kirk Maxwell, area Sales
Manager (Scotland), Spectus Window Systems.
The
scheme differs from other ways of measuring the thermal efficiency of
windows in that it assesses the complete window to produce a single number
to rank a specific window type. A higher BFRC Rating number indicates
a more thermally-efficient window. The rating then falls into one of the
BFRC A-G bands of the window energy label - similar to the brightly coloured
label used on fridges, washing machines and light bulbs, now a familiar
sight for consumers.
Robert Tierney said: 'Homeowners are now very well informed through marketing
and media on the importance of conserving energy, both to reduce carbon
dioxide emissions and to reduce the ongoing burden of ever increasing
energy bills. The manufacturer or supplier who strives to secure the best
value for money package for its customers will always put themselves in
front of the competition.'

Spray-Wel
joins Karnaval Applicator Network
West Midlands-based Spray-Wel Finishing has joined Karnaval Group's expanding
national network of specialist applicators providing in-house coating
facilities to other window manufacturers and installers throughout the
local area and beyond.
The
Halesowen firm is currently experiencing rising demand for coloured PVC-U
in both Domestic and Commercial markets amid increasing awareness of the
new selling opportunities presented by offering colour.
Karnaval supplied technical assistance and advice for Spray-Wel's dedicated
spraybooth and storage facilities at its 11,500 sq ft James Scott Lane
premises. Customers can select from the complete Karnaval Kolor palette
of RAL or BS colours for windows, doors, conservatories or roofline products.
With existing expertise in spraying and printing plastics, particularly
for the automotive industry, Spray-Wel saw the growing opportunities offered
by the window industry for colour-coating PVC-U. Commenting on the companys
decision to join Karnaval's network, Commercial Director Dianne Clarke-Brereton
says declining automotive orders meant they had to look at other market
opportunities.
We contacted Karnaval after extensive research into what the window
industry could offer and we discovered that PVC-U colour-coating provided
the prospects we were seeking. Coloured conservatories are proving popular,
particularly in the domestic sector. Colours can be matched to individual
requirements, making this service bespoke to any application, either Commercial
or Domestic, says Dianne.
One particular niche area is domestic window applications in 'designated
areas of outstanding natural beauty' and conservation areas where previously
PVC-U windows were unacceptable to planning authorities in such areas.
The availability of conservation colours is giving residents in such areas
the opportunity to have coloured windows which are not only aesthetically-pleasing
to the eye, but also follow the guidelines of planning authorities who
deem that conservation colours in PVC-U are now an acceptable alternative
to natural materials, such as oak, which are generally considered more
expensive.
The use of colour for domestic conservatories is proving extremely popular,
according to Spray-Wel. This is aptly illustrated with a black conservatory
installed on a traditional Jacobean 'black and white' house where it was
difficult to tell that the new structure was not part of the original
house. Choosing a wood grain finish PVC-U profile successfully replicated
the look of timber enabling the modern to blend in with the old.
If window companies are going to make the most of colour opportunities,
they have to make their customers aware that this service is available.
It is a proven, durable and guaranteed finish - as well as cost-effective.
It also gives customers the opportunity to have options available to them
other than standard white or brown traditionally associated with PVC-U,
she adds.
Spray-Wel's dedicated spraybooth facilities provide customers with a swift
and efficient turnaround within a week on all projects. The cost of colour
is minimal, adding a small percentage to the overall cost of any project.
Following initial technical advice and guidance from Karnaval, Spray-Wel
was soon up and running using the Karnaval Kolor product. Karnaval Kolor
is a UV-stabilised, weather-resistant coating specifically created for
use on plastics, powder-coated aluminium and other surfaces within the
construction industry.
Because it bonds with the substrate, unlike a surface adhesion paint,
the result is a durable maintenance-free finish that does not crack, flake
or peel and is guaranteed for ten years.
The whole process is properly documented and all components are
cured to paint manufacturer's specified procedures, explains Spray-Wel's
Quality Manager Tony Copage. Where special colours are required,
we can get an exact colour-match from samples provided by the customer.
Since becoming one of Karnaval's licensed applicators, Spray-Wel has completed
a number of successful colour projects, and the order book and level of
enquiries are extremely healthy for the foreseeable future.
Adrian Ickowicz, Karnaval's Managing Director emphasises that commitment
and enthusiasm are just as important to the colour-coating process, as
are the tools for the job. There is more to the process than just
spraying paint; it is a complete system and we work closely with our applicators
to ensure they fully understand the concepts, technicalities and products.
We welcome Spray-Wel on board and look forward to hearing from other
applicators who wish to work with us.

Sun
Trade Chooses Yale alongside Rehau
Rehau specialist Sun Trade Windows has announced a switch to Yale as the
main lock and cylinder supplier for all the doors sold through its Bristol,
Swindon and Barnstaple trade counters.
Sun Trade is making its name as a source of high specification frames
in the REHAU-Tritec system and has chosen Yale because it matches the
exacting standards which Sun Trade demands.
Andrew Brace, Managing Director, explained the reasons for the choice:
Sun Trade is aiming squarely at the quality end of the window and
door marketplace with a product offering which appeals to trade customers
because it is high quality, easy to fit and won't cause any call backs.
Equally importantly however, our products are also easy to sell
on to consumers because brands like REHAU and Yale are household names
with deserved reputations for quality and performance.
Sun Trade will now use Yale on all its doors which are sold with PAS 23/24
approval as standard.
On windows, Sun Trade has BS7950 approval and uses stainless steel shoot
bolt locking mechanisms and Hoppe handles.
SGG
SWISSPACER® Used in WERS Rated Windows
Consort Limited, a Veka trade fabricator based in Nottinghamshire, now
offers commercially viable Window Energy Rated windows.
These affordable windows use the Veka Fully Sculptured 70mm profile and
a high performance argon filled sealed unit from Solaglas: 4mm SGG DIAMANT,
20mm SGG SWISSPACER V warm edge spacer bar, 4mm SGG PLANITHERM TOTAL 1.1.
The unit combines good light transmission with the very neutral appearance
of SGG PLANITHERM TOTAL 1.1 (and the unit is also without the unsightly
haze effect associated with hard coat low-E glass). Swisspacer V gives
insulating performance of the highest standard and its rigid glass fibre
reinforced construction also ensures a clean sight line: there is no possibility
of waviness on application unlike with some, flexible warm edge spacer
bars.
As well as achieving a 1.1 centre pane U-Value, the Consort window offers
excellent WERS performance ('B' rated; or 'C' rated if fully steel-reinforced)
at a cost effective price. Both products can be installed in the standard
manner and with large fixed or opening panes.

Spectus
to the Rescue
When Town and Country Windows urgently needed to switch to a new window
and door system, Spectus was first on the scene to ensure a smooth transition
and ensure orders were satisfied and deadlines met.
When requirement arose, Spectus ensured that Town and Country Windows
was immediately supplied with tooling, support blocks, software and samples.
The new equipment was installed and user ready within a week, allowing
production to continue without any loss in production.
Managing Director of Town and Country Windows, Mario Sellito, observes:
Fortunately for the business, Spectus offers great support. We have
been able to make a seamless transition to the Elite 70 system.
From its base in Waltham Abbey, Town and Country both fabricates and installs
window systems.
Spectus' fast response illustrates the company's drive aim to have unrivalled
customer service and support. The Elite 70 system installed at Town and
Country Windows is probably the most complete and flexible PVC-U window
system available.
