Pilkington
Sets the Standard for Window Energy Ratings
Pilkington
is taking the evolution of Pilkington K Glass into the energy-saving
era with the launch of Pilkington energiKare - a new insulating
glass unit (IGU) which helps to meet the requirements of the Energy Saving
Trust's Energy Saving Recommended scheme. In conjunction with most framing
materials it will achieve a Window Energy Rating of at least C and easily
exceed the requirements for compliance with Part L of the building regulations.
Pilkington
energiKare is normally made up of 4mm Pilkington K Glass and
4mm Pilkington Optiwhite and must be filled with argon gas, conforming
to EN1279 Part 3.
When combined using a standard aluminium spacer bar, rather than a more
expensive warm edge spacer, it offers an easy to process, cost effective
product that is readily available throughout the UK.
What's more, with no significant process change for processors, Pilkington
energiKare IGUs help window fabricators and installers achieve the
inspirational band C rating, hassle free.
This latest initiative from Pilkington enables homeowners to have windows
that are endorsed by Pilkington and accredited by the Energy Saving Trust,
helping them to save energy and reduce the cost of their heating bills
whilst doing their bit for the environment.
Frances Galvanoni, spokesperson for the Energy Saving Trust, said:
Over a quarter of the UK's carbon dioxide emissions, some 153 million
tonnes each year, are generated from the energy we use in our homes.
'It's
crucial that manufacturers push the boundaries when it comes to developing
energy saving products which will help us to reduce the amount of energy
we waste in our homes.
'By
installing double glazed windows, like those that will incorporate Pilkington
energiKare, homeowners can reduce the amount of energy they use
by 20 per cent and cut their fuel bill by around £80-£100
each year. A clear benefit to the planet and our pockets.
David Stoker, Commercial Director, Pilkington Building Products - UK,
said:
For window installers, Pilkington energiKare is the product
to give product differentiation and boost sales and profit. It is guaranteed
to help achieve a Window Energy Rating of at least a C, therefore appealing
to environmentally conscious homeowners.
The
new IGU incorporates Pilkington K Glass, the leading low emissivity
glass in the UK and Ireland which is widely recognised by homeowners,
and Pilkington Optiwhite, the specialist ultra clear glass which
enables more heat from the sun to be captured and used in the home. Pilkington
K Glass and Pilkington Optiwhite are both standard products
so are available off the shelf and in a range of sizes across the UK.
The Pilkington energiKare IGU will be available via the Pilkington
processor network and also from IGU processor partners who are eligible
to carry exactly the same branding. In addition, partner window companies
will be able to leverage the Pilkington energiKare brand in their
own promotions.
David concludes: As well as the guarantee of a high quality product,
customers will also benefit from the stamp of approval of the Pilkington
energiKare label on every unit and the support of a substantial
national marketing campaign. We will also provide guidance on how to get
windows rated with the BFRC and how Energy Saving Recommended status from
the Energy Saving Trust can be achieved.

AC
Yule Group Chooses Edgetech
One
of the largest Glass processors and Aluminium and PVC-U frame manufacturers
in the UK, AC Yule Group, has chosen Edgetech as its preferred supplier
of Warm Edge Technology.
With
a projected turnover this year of over £36 million and a wealth
of industry experience at 60 years old, AC Yule knows when the market
is on the move. The construction industry as a whole is moving towards
improved thermal efficiency, explains Richard Yule, Operations Director
of AC Yule. There is a significant shift happening towards Warm
Edge Technology as a result. We wanted to be at the forefront of that
shift, which is why we've made a significant investment in two fully automated
Lisec lines to apply Edgetech's Super Spacer® TriSeal spacer.
We manufacture sealed units for large commercial projects, trade
customers, and for our own PVC-U frames sold to the trade sector, which
made the decision to invest in a warm edge spacer technology more complex.
We have been aware of Edgetech through its active marketing in the trade
press for the last three years, so knew it was a major player. But we
did our research into other warm edge suppliers, which confirmed Edgetech's
TriSeal provided the best performance across the board. The benefits it
could give us and our customers in all sectors, was clear. We stand out
from our competitors because we are particularly focussed on going out
of our way for our customers. So giving them the highest performing product
is essential.
Richard continues: As well as the all important energy efficiency
benefits of TriSeal, investing in two fully automated machines gives us
fantastic productivity benefits too. Our capacity will increase from 12,000
sealed units a week currently to upwards of 15,000 sealed units per week,
which will allow us to stay ahead of the steady increase in sales we've
been experiencing over the last few years.
AC Yule is currently working towards achieving an A, B and C rated window
to offer to its trade market.

VEKA Man Rogers Resurfaces in the Grass & Grazing Industry
Mark
Rogers, Sales & Marketing Director at VEKA plc until his departure
in the summer of last year, has reappeared as one of the launch team of
a new home improvement concept and one that, quite literally, has catapulted
him from glass & glazing to grass & grazing.
Looking
for greener pastures Mark has found just that by joining a private equity
start up venture called Viridion which is marketing Prima Lawn, a concept
that offers incredibly real-looking lawns that use artificial grass. Mark
sees this as the perfect opportunity for many hamstrung UK glazing and
conservatory home improvers looking to sharpen their blades - or perhaps
to make hay whilst the sun shines.
Says Mark: I was in the fortunate position to be considering a number
of alternatives when someone introduced this to me. My reaction at first
was dismissive until I thought more about the product and concept and
then saw it for myself. This is a common reaction but we are on target
to sign up our target of 70 licensees before the end of the year. It's
one of those things that you never knew you needed, but when you think
about it the idea just grows on you.
Prima Lawn uses fine but incredibly hard-wearing artificial grass in lawns
that are secured into precisely excavated and prepared bases. Close inspection
and even casual touch defies detection, says Mark, who believes that the
product offers home improvement companies a diversification that requires
training of installers but no outlay for stock with the business being
a web based sales and installation operation.
Prima Lawn allows any established home improvement company to offer
a brand new product to existing clients that fully complements anything
they have sold to them previously, especially conservatories, windows
and doors, says Mark. It is incredibly realistic - anyone
that sees it is immediately convinced - and it's the ultimate labour-saving
home improvement. You never need to cut it, weed it or edge it.
Against the basic concept of the product Mark insists that garden-based
home improvements have huge potential growth: Conservatories owe
much of their success to the desire of homeowners to connect with the
outdoors. We are offering a product for those that see their gardens as
a source of recreation, relaxation and enjoyment, not extra hard-work.
It also provides a solution for gardens in which fine lawns are difficult
to cultivate and sustain.
The business is very well funded and we have developed a superb
marketing strategy that will introduce Prima Lawn through national media
to homeowners. We have been very busy indeed and it is very exciting,
says Mark. Just as well really or I could have gone to seed,
he added with a grin.

Sales of Pilkington Activ
Exceeds Expectations
Having
exceeded the 2006/2007 UK and Ireland sales target for Pilkington Activ
self-cleaning glass by the end of November four months ahead of the company's
fiscal year end, the British sales team went on to exceed all expectations
by the end of March.
The
intensive sales and marketing strategies adopted by Pilkington in the
UK, including television and consumer press advertising, has encouraged
home improvement retailers and glass processors to heavily promote Pilkington
Activ with the result that sales grew by more than 360% compared
to the previous year.
'These figures are quite remarkable by any standards,' said Matt Buckley
Coated Product Manager Pilkington Building Products Europe, 'and a lasting
tribute to the memory of Ian Spokes* and the work put in by Ian and his
team. Pilkington Activ has proven that the market will respond positively
at all levels when marketed and sold properly. By adding value and communicating
the benefits homeowners have realised the advantages of this product and
are prepared to pay more for it.'
A major contributor to the success of the product in the UK is Pilkington
Activ Blue, which was launched in October 2005 and has accounted
for a very significant share of Activ sales.. Pilkington Activ Blue
combines the revolutionary benefits of a self-cleaning coating with the
solar control performance of a tinted glass, with good light transmission
making it ideal for use in conservatory roofs and other roof glazing applications.
Additionally a number of independent insulated glass unit manufacturers
have been quick to realise the benefits of Pilkington Activ and
have developed and marketed their own branded IGU solutions, again predominantly
for conservatory roofs.Marketing activity in Ireland, the region used
for the original test launch for Pilkington Activ six years ago,
has been stepped up recently and, with the country having the highest
level of home ownership in Europe and a strong commitment by home owners
to maintain their properties, sales are expected to develop there on a
similar scale to mainland Britain.
*Ian Spokes was the National Product Manager for Pilkington Activ
until his unexpected death in April this year.

Lives Saved Tonight
So
said UAP Managing Director David Jennings on the night of the UAP DWCW-Nepal
Charity Ball, held to fund a TB immunisation programme in the poverty-stricken
Himalayan country.
UAP has already committed to building five schools there, paid for out
of its own profits, but held the Charity Ball to raise additional funds
after several of its customers came forward with requests to become involved.
It costs only £1 for a course of three injections to immunise each
person against TB, the major killer in Nepal, and the Charity Ball actually
raised £15,317 on the night - against David Jennings' anticipated
target of £10,000 - meaning that over 15,000 children can now be
inoculated.
During a fantastic night of entertainment and exciting Charity Auction,
TV actor Sean Wilson (Martin Platt in Coronation Street) also announced
that he would accept the honour of becoming Patron of the DWCW-Nepal Charity.
The
auction items successfully bid for included:
Liverpool Shirt to Eddie Elmes - County Doors for £600
Cricket Bat to Ian Ferguson - UAP for £325
Thanka (pictured right) to Andy and Amanda Westhead - Glass Times for
£3000
BWFC Tickets to Mark Ruston UAP for £325
John Ditchfield Glass to Jill Mountney - DP Plastics for £350
Chelsea Pendant to Paul Moss - DP Plastics for £625
Table at Glass Times Raceday Haydock Park to Carl F Peterson for £1050
Frank Lampard Shirt to Derek Malcolm - Sealco for £420
Brian London/Muhammad Ali picture to David Jennings - UAP for £325
Amir Khan signed boxing glove to John Austen - Austen Harlow Flitter PR
for £310
In addition, four companies plan to send people on an Everest Base Camp
Trek including Fund Raising.
According to David Jennings The DCWC-Nepal charity profile has been
massively raised and the charity ball was a great success in both monetary
and non-monetary terms. The money raised will go a long way to immunising
over 15,000 children against TB. In addition it was a fantastic night
out, and I believe that everyone had a great time.
So much so that UAP has decided to hold an annual non-charity Midsummer
Ball & Cabaret, just to entertain staff, customers and friends.

Anglian
Building Products Wins £20m Contract
Anglian
Building Products has been chosen by North Lincolnshire Homes to supply
and fit windows and doors for around 5,000 homes. The deal, worth £20m
over the next four to five years, forms part of North Lincolnshire Homes'
commitment to refurbish and manage 10,000 of North Lincolnshire's former
council homes.
Last year, tenants voted overwhelmingly in favour of the transfer of ownership
and management of their homes to North Lincolnshire Homes (NLH). The transfer
means that tenants will see major home improvement benefits over the coming
years - including investment of £400m for repairs and improvements
over the next 30 years.
Over the next five years, around 36,000 windows and 12,000 doors with
rooftrim will be fitted by Anglian Building Products. Work has already
begun on a number of properties, with an estimated 2,000 homes targeted
for improvement by March next year.
Mark Robinson, director of technical services North Lincolnshire Homes,
says;
Anglian was selected after an exhaustive procurement process and
by demonstrating knowledge of working in partnership, quality products
and successful management. We believe the business also has the ability
to deliver a contract of this size and at a cost that is affordable to
North Lincolnshire Homes.
Anglian Building Products will form part of the programme that ensures
every property is double glazed and receives improvements to windows and
doors over the next 5 years. The Anglian team are one of a number of strategic
partners, including Mears and Bullock which is carrying out major internal
and external improvement work such as new kitchens and bathrooms, heating
systems, electrical rewires, roofing and brickwork.
Mark Robinson, continues, 'Anglian is the chosen partner for windows,
doors and rooftrim and will be working closely with North Lincolnshire
Homes as well as our other selected partners. They will be pivotal to
the success of the improvements works as modern secure doors and double-glazed
windows are right of the top of the tenant's wish list for improvements.'
Steve Cordell, Contracts Manager for Anglian Building Products, says;
This is a significant project and we have hit the ground running.
We have met with a number of tenants to outline some of the fantastic
products and developments we have scheduled and have already begun work
on a number of pilot homes. We hope this agreement is the start of a long
term relationship with both North Lincolnshire Homes and its residents.
Residents were able to take a sneak preview of the products and home improvements
they will benefit from at the Better Homes Exhibition held in Scunthorpe
on the 18th - 20th April.
North Lincolnshire Homes is a Registered Social Landlord, and a company
limited by guarantee with charitable status. That means it cannot trade
for profit. Any income must be invested back into the organisation to
maintain homes and improve services.
The company has made a commitment to improve homes to the Governments
Decent Homes standard and to the higher North Lincolnshire Decent Homes
Standard.
Anglian Building Products is the business-to-business division of the
Anglian Group, market leaders in the home improvements industry. It has
established itself over 30 years as one of the most respected suppliers
of PVCu products to the construction industry, supplying both the new
build and refurbishment sectors and developing long term partnerships
with public and private sector organisations.

Shelve
Preconceptions and Boost Energy Ratings with R&D
A
common thread linking companies who have achieved top BFRC window energy
ratings is research & development, according to Certified Simulator
Mike Chorlton, of Chiltern Dynamics. 'The companies that have achieved
A and B ratings have done so by developing their products with a view
to achieving energy efficiency.
Simulation is the perfect tool for development, as it can be used prove
the thermal performance of products before any capital investment is made
for production and tooling.'
Chiltern Dynamics also advises manufacturers to pay particular attention
to key aspects of design, such as the sightlines and glazing area. 'The
glazing area is a large part of the window for energy rating calculation.
The larger the glass fraction, the higher the effect of solar heat gain
will be and the whole window U-value may also be slightly improved,' said
Mr Chorlton.
Equally, experimenting with IGU options can be worthwhile, but he warned:
'It is pointless simulating with an IGU that cannot be easily procured.'
An IGU with a very narrow gas space, high emissivity glass and no gas
fill will have a detrimental effect on the whole window U-value. 'The
accepted optimum width of gas space is 16mm, but so often the design of
the window precludes fitting a 24mm IGU.'
Chiltern Dynamics has worked closely on energy ratings with sister company
BM TRADA Certification, one of only three approved bodies in the UK. BM
TRADA has to date certified more than 260 windows under the BFRC scheme.
'Another mistake manufacturers make is to hold up a competitor's design
and say they have an A rating, we'll copy that, without knowing
the intricacies of the research or the technologies used.'
And materials selection is crucial, especially with timber products, said
Mr Chorlton. 'It is vital to ascertain at the onset of simulation the
materials used in construction. Calculations to EN10077-2 often use default
values for softwood and hardwood, but these defaults are often higher
than the actual values for a specific timber type. If at all possible,
test reports for thermal conductivity of the timber to be simulated should
be obtained.' Values are available from various sources, but in Chiltern
Dynamics' experience these are seldom backed up by test evidence and should
not be used for BFRC rating calculation.
'We have handled enough simulations now to know that it takes time and
resources to develop a product to achieve higher ratings,' Mr Chorlton
added. ' Achieving an A-rated product is never guaranteed. Many of the
companies now registered with BFRC have gone through many design changes
to improve their ratings, which is a healthy trend for the industry.'

Bystronic
Glass gives K Seal Glass a Leading Edge
A
recent investment in equipment from Bystronic Glass UK is set to further
raise the corporate profile of K Seal Glass, based in the North West of
England. In a contract worth £300,000 the investment will ensure
the company maintains its leading market position.
The
focus of the new installation at K Seal includes a vertical arrissing
system which will help to fully automate production methods and increase
efficiency. K Seal is a leading manufacturer of glass products for both
the commercial and domestic markets with a diverse range of glass solutions.
With a product range that comprises various types of coated glasses including
Enviroglas, Kolorglas and PartitionGlas senior management at the company
considered it vital to invest in state-of-the-art equipment from Bystronic
as manual handling is completely eliminated.
Stephen Woolley, Managing Director, K Seal Glass comments, Because
of the assortment of products that we manufacture, we needed equipment
that can handle shapes. The Bystronic arrissing line is extremely user
friendly as it constantly calibrates itself through the shape recognition
programme. Whatever comes down the line is automatically recognised, which
will make our production methods much more efficient.
K Seal has achieved year on year growth since being established in 1994
as the main manufacturer of glass and toughened safety glass in the North
West. Quality, high performance production standards and customer satisfaction
remain a priority for the company. With industry regulations and market
sectors rapidly changing in relation to glass and glass products, investment
in modern, reliable equipment was imperative.
Whilst other high profile insulated glass processing manufacturing companies
from around the UK were considered, Stephen Woolley felt the Bystronic
equipment provided the most efficient and cost-effective solution for
the company's needs.
Stephen Woolley comments, The capabilities of the arrissing line
suits the dynamics of this company and our business plan. Bystronic clearly
defined the key benefits and we believe that the equipment is the best
on the market. The company has a progressive approach and we intend to
remain at the forefront of the industry.
Since the year 2000 K Seal has made substantial investments in the plant
as well as modern equipment to ensure that the manufacturing facilities
are fully automated in order to accommodate the new industry regulations.
Having been accredited with BS 5713 ISO 9002 and BS EN 1279, it was crucial
that any new machinery introduced at K Seal would accommodate current
and future legislative requirements.
Stephen Woolley continues, Production at K Seal will increase considerably
and product diversification will inevitably follow. The Bystronic Glass
reputation is first class and innovative designs will ensure that we maintain
a leading market position. It is crucial to provide our customers with
only the highest quality products and we believe that our reputation will
be further enhanced by our association with the Bystronic brand.
Brian McDonald, Sales Manager, Bystronic Glass UK comments, We consider
we provide superior products and services which we believe reflects our
corporate philosophy of working alongside customers to ensure they achieve
their targets. We have developed a strong working relationship with K
Seal Glass and feel confident about the new installation programme.

Retirement
for Lindsay Rose at Roseview
Lindsay
Rose, the founder and managing director of specialist sash window manufacturer
Roseview Windows, has retired after 30 years in charge of the business.
Lindsay
was one of the first in the PVC-U industry to identify the potential for
PVC-U sash windows and was instrumental in carving out what is now a booming
niche sector. Roseview, which is based in Olney, Buckinghamshire, fabricated
in the original REHAU S719 vertical slider system and still fabricates
in the new REHAU Heritage system today.
Lindsay led Roseview through the peaks and troughs of the 80s and 90s
and created a highly successful business renowned for its product quality,
innovation and excellent service.
Roseview held a farewell ceremony for Lindsay recently and presented her
with gifts and flowers to mark her retirement.
At the ceremony, new managing director Willie Kerr acknowledged Lindsay's
huge contribution to the company and thanked her not only for her commitment
to Roseview but also for helping to promote the cause of women in the
traditionally male dominated window industry.

Sales
Booming for Sheerframe Window Fabricator
Cleveland
based Sheerframe fabricator and installer H Jarvis Ltd has built on the
success of a record end to 2006 with continued sales growth during the
first quarter of this year.
The
company, which specialises in windows and doors for the housebuilding
sector, has seen a month-on-month sales increase for the first five months
of this year. H Jarvis Ltd expects that trend is set to continue for the
remainder of the 2007, putting the company on course for a record year.
Following a review of the production processes at its 50,000 sq. ft. factory
in conjunction with Durham University and the DTI manufacturing advisory
service, H Jarvis has significantly expanded its capacity and is now equipped
to produce 2,000 units per week.
Dave Glendinning, managing director of H Jarvis Ltd says, These

provider' for housebuilders with the flexibility to handle any window
and door requirement at a given development. That includes numerous colour
options, curtain walling, vertically sliding sashes and composite doors.
We have concentrated on delivering high quality products to the
housebuilding and commercial sectors, backed with a first-rate service,
and our continued success shows that this approach is proving extremely
effective.

Siegenia-Aubi
Helps Take the 'Sting' Out of Testing
Siegenia-Aubi
Ltd has introduced a new testing facility that will save window and door
fabricators time and money in the run up to industry standard tests.
The
new research and development capability at Siegenia-Aubis Coventry
headquarters allows fabricators to test window and door systems against
strict industry measures, in a controlled environment. The facility provides
'trial run' testing which can establish whether a system will successfully
meet industry standards ahead of final stage testing.
The process replicates the loading test of forced entry from outside at
the hinge and locking points of doors and window systems. Siegenia-Aubis
technical team has already put a range of systems through their paces
with a view to them exceeding BS7950 and EN1627 for enhanced security.
The test rig can also be adjusted to test beyond the required minimum
standards, enabling fabricators to offer end users ultimate security options
where required.
Not only will the operation save time but it will also help fabricators
reduce their annual testing budget. Instead of paying for independent
tests in the lead up to a system passing, Siegenia-Aubis test will
ensure that systems' security capabilities have been proven.
Says Chris Wood, technical manager at Siegenia-Aubi Ltd, The testing
will give fabricators confidence in their products in the run up to industry
tests. We decided to provide the facility in-house so that fabricators
can see for themselves, whilst onsite, that our hardware exceeds industry
standards. It also supports our own in-house product development activities
as we can test the hardware components before they go to market.

HOPPE
and Yale help Leamore Windows Stand out with Quality
In
a saturated replacement window market, one of the key ways to stand out
is by using quality products with strong brand and marketing support for
the general public, according to Afolabi Akinsanya, Yale's National Sales
Manager: Demand is growing fast for quality products and services.
Consumer decision-making is increasingly based on the value of the package
and not just the price. That's why HOPPE handles and Yale locks are helping
Leamore Windows stay ahead of competition.
Tim
Hackett, Manager at Leamore Windows, agrees: Although the wider
window market has been going through tough times, our sales are soaring.
By using quality in every form - from staff through to products and service
- we've been able to go against the national trend. When fabricating we
know that we can't just do the same as everyone else because that would
only leave us with price to compete on. We source premium quality products
to stand out from the crowd. The combination of HOPPE's Tôkyô
suite and Yale's five hook lock perfectly matches our ethos and dedication
to quality, premium branding and style.

Supertrucks
Glass Carrying Rack for Hourglass
Supertrucks
Ltd, the UK manufacturer of specialist glass carrying systems, is now
launching Fit & Glaze, a new and significantly improved demountable
glass carrying rack for panel vans. The St Helens based company has just
supplied the first Fit & Glaze rack system to Hourglass, a Havant-based
specialist glass manufacturer.
Peter Wright, Supertrucks chairman, explains, Our new Fit &
Glaze demountable glass carrying system has been engineered to fit virtually
any modern panel van. As such, the new Fit & Glaze is both easier
and faster to fit/remove and yet it provides a safe and secure method
of carrying up to 350kg of glazing product on an exterior rack.
The Fit & Glaze system, which is priced from £740.00 + VAT,
is designed to meet the requirements of building maintenance and glazing
companies who do not regularly carry large glazing products on their vehicles.
With the new Fit & Glaze these companies can share one rack between
a number of vehicles to provide maximum operational flexibility. Two men
can fit or remove the Fit & Glaze rack from a van in just two minutes.
The rack fits over the top fixing bar and is secured to the bottom fixing
points using easy to align turn-screw fixings.
Peter Collins, owner of Hourglass, a long-established specialist glass
manufacturer, comments, Fit & Glaze is ideal for our business
where we only have an occasional requirement to carry large items of glass.
We now have the flexibility to run two of our vans with neither or either
fitted with the rack. It is the first Supertrucks rack we have bought
and we have been very impressed with both the service provided by the
company and the quality of the product, which we expect to last for very
many years.
Hourglass has specified the new Fit & Glaze for its latest fleet additions,
two Renault Master long wheelbase high top panel vans. Supertrucks has
fitted both these vans with full length full width roof racks and the
top and bottom fixing points for the 3,500mm high by 2,870mm long Fit
& Glaze demountable side rack. The rack has a white powder coat finish
(mill finish or anodised is also available) and is equipped with three
System 1 securing poles, marker boards and inclinometer.
In addition to the new Fit & Glaze demountable rack system Supertrucks
also manufacturers a comprehensive range of fixed glass carrying racks
and associated equipment for all popular makes of panel vans. The company
also offers coachbuilt glass carrying bodies for chassis cabs in the 3.5
to 26 tonne gvw sector.

It's
'C' for Crystal
Pilkington
AG, formerly AG Glass and Glazing, says that it continues to lead the
market for the development of window energy rated glass solutions and
Romford-based Crystal Windows is the latest company to benefit from the
companys expertise.
Crystal
Windows is one of the South East's largest independent retailers of windows
and doors and currently manufactures 1,000 windows a week purely for the
companys own retail division. The company will be offering a 'C'
rated window as standard using Pilkington K Glass(tm) as it responds to
the increased importance and opportunities that the Window Energy Ratings
(WERs) provide.
Tony Morris, operations manager at Crystal comments: We have worked
closely with Pilkington AG to develop an energy rated solution and the
result of the work is a 'C' rating for our Eurocell window. We are in
the process of launching this offering throughout London and the South
East and believe that it is the future for the glazing industry.
John Spiby, managing director of Pilkington AG adds: The transition
to Pilkington AG has been relatively seamless and will allow us to continue
pushing our energy rated solutions thanks to the options that Pilkington
K Glass provides us. Crystal has been a longstanding customer and
the company has been quick to embrace the opportunities for an energy
rated window. I fully expect other companies to follow Crystals
example.
Pilkington AG continues to work with leading fabricators thanks to the
companys partnership programme to develop bespoke solutions for
companies looking to offer energy rated windows. John concludes: Whether
you are a systems company, fabricator or installer we have the resources,
expertise and proven track record to assist with the WERs process. If
this is something that companies are currently considering then we'd be
delighted to hear from them!

Fitology
by TimberWindows.com
TimberWindows.com
introduces Fitology - the science of speed-fitting timber windows. The
company's engineered timber system provides a window that's 10% quicker
to fit than PVC-U and twice as fast to install when compared to a standard
timber window.
Chris Brunsdon, TimberWindows.com's Managing Director comments: We've
deskilled installation. Fitology' means we can supply factory-finished
and glazed products that can be installed quickly and with ease and sashes
can be swiftly taken off the frame, as necessary.
A detachable hinge system means installers can remove the sash to reduce
the weight. On a window containing a fixed light, concealed hinges and
fixings through the mullion mean that an installer can remove these as
well to fix the outer frame. All these elements are concealed when the
installation is complete. Chris Brunsdon continues, the system's
designed for speedy, quality fitting. And installers never have to pick
up a paint brush. Fitology' applies to nearly every TimberWindows.com
product - even the door and side panels are quick and easy to fit.

Minister
Praises REHAU Fabricator Newco
Newco
Products, a REHAU fabricator based in the London Borough of Newham, was
praised by Anne Maguire, Minister for Disabled People, when she visited
the company's Stratford depot recently to award NVQ certificates to disabled
graduates of the WORKSTEP scheme.
Anne
Maguire was joined by Newham's Deputy Mayor Councillor Christine Bowden
and industry professionals including senior representatives from Olympic
Village and Stratford City Developer Bovis Lend Lease, Learning Skills
Council and Newham Homes, all of whom toured the factory floor and witnessed
Newco at work.
Newco Products has been carrying out training and manufacturing since
1922. It is part of the local authority but receives no direct funding
and has a turnover of £4.5m producing timber windows and doors,
kitchens and bespoke joinery products as well as PVC-U windows in REHAU
profile.
More than half Newco's 90 strong workforce have some form of disability.
In addition, disability training is handled by Newco Employment and Training
(NET).
During the visit, Mrs Maguire commented: When employers recruit,
they should consider people for what they can do, rather than what they
can't do because of their disability. Newco Products is a great example
of this. As the people I have met here today show, with the right kind
of support and training, they can work effectively regardless of their
disability.
Newco Products supplies Newham Homes with PVC-U windows and kitchens for
its Decent Homes delivery programme, and is now actively working to elevate
its profile amongst developers and main contractors working on or planning
to bid for major developments in the area. These include Stratford City,
the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, Thames Gateway and other
major regeneration projects planned for East London.
Andrew Toomey, General Manager of Newco, said: We read and hear
about the government's commitment to ensure that in the delivery of forthcoming
major projects, contractors will be required to buy local products, employ
local labour and support local small and medium sized enterprises. We
fulfil all these criteria which, along with our long standing social commitment,
makes us an ideal supply chain partner for developers and contractors.
We are very keen to enter into discussions with these organisations with
a view to working towards achieving approved supplier status.
Councillor Christine Bowden, added: The council is committed to
promoting equal opportunities for all residents and Newco is one of the
beacons of this ethos.
After operating for more than 80 years we are proud that Newco continues
to support people to gain training and assist them with securing employment.
The council is very proud of Newco and is committed to supporting its
efforts to achieve the ambitious targets it has set itself.

Nova
Group Chooses Kenrick for High Security Hardware Package
Trade
fabricator Nova Group Ltd. has chosen hardware manufacturer Kenrick to
supply the company with a bespoke version of its Excalibur multi-point
locking system as well as its Lockmaster high security door lock.
The
Nova Group, which fabricates in excess of 1,000 frames a week at its 125,000
square feet site in Altrincham, Cheshire, had worked with Kenrick more
than a decade ago when Kenrick supplied a shootbolt for Nova Group's 60mm
system.
Nova Group therefore had no hesitation in approaching Kenrick to supply
the Excalibur and Lockmaster systems for the companys fully sculptured
Belvedere and Settanta 70mm ranges of windows and doors.
Kenrick created a bespoke version of its Excalibur system especially for
Nova, which benefits from purpose designed shootbolt bars, gearbox and
branded centre keeps.
The company chose the systems because they combine high security with
ease of use. Both systems are very quick and simple to install and are
backed by a comprehensive 10 year manufacturer's warranty and five year
security guarantee.
Nova is also delighted with the service and technical support provided
by Kenrick.
Phil Burrows, Nova Group's sales director, says: The company fabricates
more than 1,000 frames a week, so it's vital that we offer the highest
security to end users as well as speed of fitting for our installers.
Excalibur and Lockmaster are durable and reliable and offer total peace
of mind to the homeowner. We were also very impressed with Kenrick's ability
and willingness to fine-tune the keeps and add an extra hook and cam lock
on the Lockmaster door lock to create a totally unique locking mechanism
for our Settanta system.
Kenrick's Excalibur multi-point locking system is Secured by Design approved.
It benefits from a robust unhanded die-cast gearbox and patented bi-directional
die-cast claws. It also fits all Eurogroove systems, making it a very
flexible option.
Lockmaster provides smooth operation and a patented anti-lift deadbolt,
which prevents any forced disengagement of the hooks. With fully adjustable
keeps to allow easier fitting, Lockmaster meets all back door lever/lever
or front door lever/pad requirements and exceeds the corrosion requirements
of BS7412.
Nova Group was established in 1971 and manufactures a wide range of products,
including tilt and turn windows, doors and conservatories. The company,
which employs nearly 200 people, is also equipped with three Insulating
Glass sealed unit lines and its own state-of-the-art toughened glass plant.
Kenrick is a leading supplier of hardware solutions for PVCu, aluminium
and timber window and door systems. The company has a proud heritage spanning
more than 200 years, having been established By Archibald Kenrick who
manufactured buckles and livery fittings. Kenrick's range of top quality
products includes the Excalibur multi-point locking system and the four-point
Centurion system. The Easi-Fit and Espagnolette locking systems are cost
effective and easy to install.

JC
Parker Installations Chooses Crystal as Sole Supplier
Crystal
Direct, the Hertfordshire based national trade fabricator, was JC Parker
Installations' first choice of supplier when it was established in September
2006.
John Parker, Owner of JC Parker Installations, has been in the industry
for 25 years and set up his own company knowing that Crystal would be
his first and only choice of supplier.
When I decided to take the plunge and open my own company last year,
explains John, I already knew Crystal would be my only supplier
of windows and glass. Crystal offers a range of systems so I have the
option to buy a different system to suit the requirements of each of my
customers. Crystal's support service is excellent and whenever I have
had a problem the company has been helpful. The guys are a friendly bunch,
their lead times are excellent and they are always accommodating. I see
a happy future working with Crystal.

Norway
Opens New Window of Opportunity for U-fit
Scandinavia
could soon be going crazy for conservatories after a Midlands double glazing
company struck a deal to supply one of Norway's largest DIY chains.
U-fit, based in Holbrooks, Coventry, which specialises in manufacturing
do-it-yourself conservatories, has won a contract to supply its products
to Byggeriet - a Norwegian retailer which has more than 100 branches.

Opening
New Doors: Andy Savory, U-fit Operations Director and Exports Manager
Jag Jandu
Although commonplace in the UK, conservatories are new to the Scandinavian
market, where the majority of homes are made from timber. U-fit's conservatories
- termed 'vinterhagen' in Norwegian - will be distributed to Byggeriet
customers by Oslo-based firm Kragerø Byggsenter. The company then
hopes to expand into other Scandinavian countries with U-fit products
next year.
Jag Jandu, U-fit's export manager who clinched the Norwegian deal, said:
We are very excited at the prospect of breaking into the Scandinavian
market.
We already supply our conservatories to clients in a variety of
countries including Spain, Crete, Japan and Barbados and are always looking
at ways of expanding our reputation globally.
Chris Rowlands of Kragerø Byggsenter, said U-fit's conservatory
range was being marketed as the Wintergarden collection. He added: Conservatories
are new on the market in Norway but if it catches on we have plans on
bringing them to other Scandinavian countries next year.
U-fit.co.uk was set up 11 years ago by John and Ann Armstrong and has
enjoyed phenomenal growth since it was launched. It specialises in manufacturing
do-it-yourself conservatories. The couple are well known to millions as
stars of BBC2's cult fly-on-the-wall series The Armstrongs, which gave
an insight into the day-to-day running of U-fit.
