A
Fantastic Four for WHS Halo at G07
An
excellent showing from WHS Halo and its customers at the G07 awards last
Friday (October 12th) saw four fantastic victories in some of the most
keenly fought categories. In these, the fourth awards since their inception,
WHS Halo customers Warmseal Windows (Newcastle) and Masterframe Windows
(Witham) were awarded Customer Care Initiative of the Year and Energy
Efficiency Initiative of the Year respectively.
Moreover, WHS Halo itself also won the award for Promotional Campaign
of the Year for System 10's educational campaign, focussed on building
schools for the future; while group company Bowater Windows collected
the plaudits in the Social Housing Project of the Year in respect of its
work in the Birmingham Construction Partnership.
And although not a direct customer, P&P Glass - winner in the Training
& Development category and - also installs WHS Halo's PVC systems;
arguably making up a famous five.
This year's success follows a top treble of wins by WHS Halo customers
last year; half a dozen in 2005 and another treble at the inaugural G04
event. History also has a habit of repeating itself for WHS Halo customers;
with Masterframe and Warmseal both having mounted the winners' podium
in the past. The night's entertainment - and award hosting - was provided
by Marion and Geoff comedy star Rob Brydon at the gala event; staged at
the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel and attended by more than 700 luminaries
from the glazing industry and their guests.
Mike Stevenson, WHS Halo's Marketing Director, said of the award bonanza:
As a main sponsor of the G Awards since their launch in 2004, our
delight grows annually to see so many of our customers being recognised
as industry leaders in their respective categories. To see our customers
represented in eight of the shortlists and win two was incredibly cheering.
Moreover, we are also somewhat pleased at our winning the Promotional
Campaign of the Year for System 10's great work in the public sector;
not to mention sister business Bowater Window's top result in the Social
Housing category.

Masterframe
Wins G07 Energy Efficiency Initiative - 4th G Award in 3 Years!
Masterframe
has won the GO7 Energy Efficiency Initiative award in recognition of its
Bygone Collection 'A' to 'C' energy rated vertical sliders. According
to the judges, No-one in the industry has done more for energy efficiency
this year.
Masterframe now has four G Awards to be proud of, having won the coveted
Fabricator of the Year last year, as well as Customer Care and the Energy
Efficiency Initiative Award in 2005.
Technical Director, Ray Rabett comments: The industry continues
to recognise Masterframe's hard work to push the boundaries on energy
efficiency. This year we launched the UK's first and only 'A' rated vertical
slider, which has opened up a whole new market for our customers.
People are more aware of their carbon footprint than ever before,
which is why we are concentrating our efforts on a consumer marketing
programme, explains Masterframe's Managing Director, Alan Burgess.
Our 'A' to 'C' rated sliders are increasingly popular with homeowners
who want modern energy standards for traditional homes. The introduction
of HIPS and the Energy Performance Certificate means we have a growing
market for our sashes. And the award comes just in time for Energy Saving
Week, 22nd-29th October!

TimberWindows.com
is Specialist of the Year at G07
First-time
entrant to the G07 awards, TimberWindows.com bagged the Specialist of
the Year at the ceremony held at Birmingham's Metropole Hotel on Friday
12th October. The engineered timber window system company was thrilled
with the judges' recognition of its efforts to bring timber windows into
the 21st Century.

Chris Brunsdon, Managing Director (holding the award)
and Lincoln Brown, Sales and Marketing Manager (on the right)
'Winning
this award is a tremendous achievement for our three year old company,'
explains Chris Brunsdon, Managing Director of TimberWindows.com. 'We went
in for Specialist of the Year because our product and our business model
are both unique. With the product, we've taken a traditional, beautiful
timber window and designed in all the modern benefits of low-maintenance
PVC-U products. There's no longer any need to compromise on looks or durability.
With TimberWindows.com, you get both. Our business model's a combination
of online and offline marketing methods and processes that improve service
for both homeowners and our Registered Installers.'
Chris goes on to say, 'It was our first time at the awards and we had
a fantastic evening. We're looking forward to coming back to defend our
title next year!'
Winner
Named For 2007 Bohle Glass Student Of The Year Award
After
what one judge described as 'one of the most difficult assessments he
has ever had to make' the winner of the 2007 Bohle Glass Student of the
Year Award competition has been named.
Rosalind
Grogan of the City of Bath College was proclaimed Winner at this year's
G07 Awards, ending the nail biting wait for Rosalind and three other finalists
who were the guests of Award organisers Bohle. Rosalind received her trophy
from the G07 celebrity presenter Rob Bryden and Bohle's Gary Dean.
In addition to the Trophy and prestige of being judged Winner in an event
that has produced extraordinary skills and creativity, Rosalind will also
enjoy prizes that include a Bohle ECO45 Glass Fusing Kiln and ancillaries
worth more than £1,000, together with an expenses paid trip to the
Bohle headquarters in Haan, Germany, one of the leading centres of glass
processing technology with a great tradition of glass working.
Bohle Managing Director Gary Dean says that the event is producing entries
that are way beyond his expectations: 'Skills in technical, art and craft
glass working are at the core of what Bohle does and so when we launched
the Glass Student of the Year Award we expected to see some nice entries.
But in such a short time we have elicited skills and creativity that are
World Class from British colleges. Rosalind is a very worthy winner and
there were many others that impressed. I am delighted that the guests
at G07 could see the quality that we have in the colleges in this country.'
A selection of the entries will form a feature at next years Glass Processing
& Technology (GP&T) exhibition, which will be held at the National
Exhibition Centre (NEC) from 8th - 10th April 2008, offering visitors
the opportunity to study the Winner and other entries at close hand.
Last
Chance to Make a Difference to our Industry
The
Number 10 petition to Reduce VAT on Energy Saving Recommended (ESR) windows
will be taken offline having run its one year course, on 20th October.
The petition started by Andy Jones, Managing Director of Edgetech, has
been a great success with over 800 signatures on it to date. 'But we need
more,' says Andy.
'One last push to bump the number of names up to 1000 would make an even
stronger statement to the Government, who is looking seriously at the
benefits of ESR windows. ESR windows are already boosting installer sales
but a reduced VAT rate of 5% would really tip the balance and give homeowners
another incentive to replace their replacements with more energy efficient
alternatives. Adding your name to the petition only takes a couple of
minutes to do, but could have a long lasting impact on the future of our
industry.
'There are still some key names missing too. If you've been asking others
to support the VAT campaign in the press, your name should be on the list.
If you've already added your name, ask your colleagues, suppliers, customers
and even family and friends to do the same. We only have four more days,
so let's make them count before the opportunity passes.

Network's
Heading for the Half Billion...and Steve's Back on TV
Network
VEKA members are just weeks away from reaching their biggest milestone
ever - £500million of accumulated sales.
Meanwhile, the organisation has also announced it will run a third burst
of TV advertising throughout the autumn.
The
milestone comes from more than 125,000 installations around Britain and
Ireland since the organisation was founded less than 12 years ago.
Members took nearly five years to reach the first £100million sales,
back in 2001, but last year, Network VEKA announced it had bucked the
industry slowdown by adding its fourth £100million in a record 18
months. Now members are forecast to beat even that in reaching the half
a billion mark.
Managing Director John Ogilvie says the organisation is proving even more
vital to the industry in the tough market than it was in the better times.
Members not only enjoy an Average Installation Value around 50%
higher than the industry norm, he added.
But it is also clear that, in today's market, the casualty rate
among unaffiliated operators is significantly higher than among members.
Members also benefit from the organisation's Ten-Year Insurance Backed
Guarantee, an exceptional marketing support package and a collective brand
identity, which includes the endorsement of snooker celebrity Steve Davis.
Network VEKA has also decided to run a third burst of TV adverts featuring
Steve Davis throughout the autumn.
In the wake of the success of the two previous bursts, in spring and last
autumn, the ad will appear in about 700 slots on a range of digital channels.

Freefoam
Guarantees Success
Freefoam
Plastics has announced that HHI Building Products from Northern Ireland
once again topped the Freefoam guarantee table for the first six months
of 2007.
The company registered the highest number of installations since the start
of 2007, signifying its continued commitment to providing customers with
the highest levels of customer service and support. Just Fascias from
Barnsley, a well-established registered installer once again came 2nd,
reinforcing its commitment to providing customers with peace of mind regarding
their roofline and rainwater needs.
Freefoam is a manufacturer of environmentally friendly PVC roofline and
rainwater systems and aims to be the market leader in the Northern European
market. It launched its industry-first 20 Year Extended Guarantee scheme
in early 2003. This scheme provides a 20-year guarantee on all registered
Freefoam installations carried out by registered Freefoam installers.
There are currently hundreds of registered Freefoam installers participating
in the programme throughout the UK and Ireland. Numbers continue to grow
each year and it has been an enormous success for both Freefoam and its
customers. If installers wish to become registered they can do so by completing
an online registration form and, once approved by Freefoam, they can begin
to offer the 20-year guarantee on Freefoam installations (subject to terms
and conditions).
Brendan Hyland, Marketing Manager, comments, We are delighted to
have such reputable and service-orientated companies as HHI Building Products
and Just Fascias offering our 20 Year extended guarantee on completed
installations. HHI once again topped the guarantee table proving how popular
this scheme is and the weight it adds to their sales proposal. It also
gives homeowners greater peace of mind that comes from receiving confirmation
of their guarantee direct from the manufacturer.

Solaglas
Liverpool Holds Product Awareness Day
Customers
of Solaglas Liverpool were treated to a showcase of glass solutions at
an event held at the Village hotel in Huyton last month.
The
event gave guests an excellent opportunity to find out more about the
products and services that Solaglas has to offer, including low-E glass,
conservatory roof glazing, as well as a wide selection of design products
such as silky, matt-finished glass and durable, lacquered glass. It also
allowed them to meet key representatives from the Cheadle Avenue branch.
Other Solaglas and Saint-Gobain companies were also exhibiting at the
event to show their support. Solaglas Sittingbourne, showcased its new
Blast and Bullet-resistant glazing range, which the company now offers
in addition to its specialist laminate and design ranges. Windowcare,
which offers 24hr emergency glazing services also attended, as did fellow
Saint-Gobain Glass Solutions company Vetrotech, to display its range of
fire-resistant glazing. All products and services on show, plus many more
can be supplied by Solaglas Liverpool.
The Solaglas display vehicle 'Le Truck' was on-site demonstrating a variety

M&S
Cladding and Windows Signs Supply Agreement
M&S
Cladding and Windows, based in Torquay, has just signed a five-year supply
agreement with systems supplier, Deceuninck. Director of M&S Cladding
and Windows, Steve Mazdon, said on signing the agreement, We have
been delighted by the product quality and service that we receive from
Deceuninck and committing to a five year sole supply agreement with them
was an obvious choice for us.
M&S
Cladding and Windows places great value on the benefits of long-term partnerships
and was quick to point out that Deceuninck has the products, service and
support to meet the needs of its growing business in both the short and
longer term. Steve said, We really do value the quality of Deceuninck
products. You cannot put a price on quality and the range from Deceuninck
is very, very high.
Furthermore, the company offers a high level of support, working with
you to add real value to your business. We work most closely with our
Account Manager, Sally Gingell, who is very proactive and customer-focussed.
It's refreshing to be able to rely on that level of support.
M&S Cladding and Windows manufactures all three intelligently designed
systems from Deceuninck: The 2500 chamfered system with its clean lines
and grey low line gasket; the popular 2800 decorative suite with its aesthetic
appeal and the company's 3000 zendow system offering style with cutting-edge
technology and timeless good looks.
M&S Cladding and Windows serves both the trade and domestic markets.
As well as its trade counter, the company also offers a reliable delivery
service throughout the South West. Last year the company opened The Conservatory
Centre, which is open to the public as well as members of the trade wanting
to show their own customers what they can offer. The Conservatory Centre
has been a tremendous success and sales for the company have steadily
increased.
Steve concluded, Whilst market conditions remain tough, we have
seen a steady increase in business due in part, to offering the same values
as Deceuninck, good quality products and reliable service. Again, like
Deceuninck, we are always looking to increase our portfolio. Plans are
now well underway to start manufacturing bi-folding doors which are becoming
more and more popular in the domestic and trade markets and will be launched
before the end of 2007. With our growing sales, introduction of new products
and committing to Deceuninck we are very excited about the future.

NSG
Adopts New Branding Structure
Following
a major review of its branding strategy, NSG has decided to adopt the
'Pilkington' brand for its global Flat Glass business.
NSG Chairman Yozo Izuhara said In the new NSG Group, Flat Glass
now accounts for around 85 per cent of our global operations, with manufacturing
in 27countries worldwide and sales in over 130. We aim to present a single
face to all our customers in both Building Products and Automotive - and
that means adopting a single global brand for all our markets in those
sectors.
Since the acquisition in June 2006, we have made good progress in
integrating our businesses. In parallel, we conducted a major review of
our branding. Research showed that the 'Pilkington' brand has very good
recognition worldwide and a high reputation for innovative products and
good customer service.
To ensure that this commercial advantage is fully exploited globally,
NSG has taken the decision to use the 'Pilkington' brand for all of the
Group's Flat Glass operations. Ownership of the Pilkington brand was an
important element of our acquisition strategy and we intend to make effective
use of it.

At the top level the Company will in future adopt the brand 'NSG
Group'. This will also be used by our Information Technology and Glass
Fibre businesses, as the NSG name is effective and well established in
those sectors.
These changes will take effect immediately, with the new branding
being progressively introduced into all of our operations worldwide in
the coming months.

Line Up to Sign Up for Pilkington energiKare
Across
the country, customers are signing up to supply the new energy efficient
glazing, Pilkington energiKare. Since its launch in May, more than
100 companies have registered their interest in becoming partner companies
to either manufacture or stock the new insulated glass unit (IGU) or offer
windows containing Pilkington energiKare.
In
conjunction with most framing materials, Pilkington energiKare easily
exceeds the requirements for compliance of Part L of Building Regulations.
One of the reasons it is proving so popular is the minimal process change
for processors, helping window fabricators and installers achieve a Window
Energy Rating (WER) of at least a C, hassle free.
Polar Windows Ltd, Independent Glass Co Ltd and Exeter Window Store are
three companies who have joined the Pilkington energiKare revolution.
Polar Windows Ltd in Chesterfield was recently presented with its British
Fenestration Ratings Council C rated windows certificate for its window,
which is made from manufacturer Profile 22s FS Suite and glazed
with Pilkington energiKare. Alan Crowe, Managing Director, Polar
Windows said: 'By entering into long term partnerships with the industrys
leading supplier we have been able to guarantee our customers consistently
high quality and uninterrupted supply. The launch of Pilkington energiKare
coincided perfectly with the launch of our own energy saving window, and
we are very optimistic about its potential.'
Independent Glass Co Ltd, based in Glasgow, Scotland was particularly
impressed with the marketing literature and technical advice offered as
part of the Pilkington energiKare package. Managing Director John
Devine Snr. said: 'Pilkington energiKare is an innovative, yet simple
way of meeting the criteria of a WER of A-C for the Energy Saving Trusts
Energy Saving Recommended scheme. We believe this new IGU will be as popular
as Pilkington Activ and so wanted to stock and sell its components from
the very start.'
Exeter Window Store has been stocking Pilkington products for ten years,
and now supplies Pilkington energiKare to customers as standard.
Rob Player, owner and partner of Exeter Window Store said: 'Im very
impressed with Pilkington energiKare. We already supply Pilkington
K Glass but the fact that Pilkington energiKare is a whole
unit gives us a head start on the competition. It is clear to us that
homeowners are looking for energy efficient glazing, especially since
the introduction of Home Improvement Packs and Energy Performance Certificates.
I want Exeter Window Store to be ahead of the game when it comes to promoting
energy efficiency and low-E windows to customers.'
With the environment and energy efficiency increasingly high on everyones
agenda, there are plenty of reasons to sign up to stock Pilkington energiKare.

Selecta
Systems Converts Leading Manufacturer
Another
manufacturer has recently converted to the Advance 70 mm system from Selecta
Systems. Patersons, based in County Durham has chosen to switch to the
five chamber profile as the product and support services provided by the
Selecta team are considered superior.
Durability,
reliability and pricing were considered the strengths of the Advance 70
mm product which attained industry 'A' rating status earlier this year.
Patersons fabricate and install windows, doors and conservatories to both
the domestic and commercial markets.
In an industry that is so fiercely competitive, the company has established
a strong reputation which has been substantiated by the consistent recommendations
received. For over seven years Patersons has been contracted by Sunderland
City Council as well as Teesdale Council on refurbishment projects including
schools and shops.
Martin Jackson, Director at Patersons considers that the Advance 70 mm
system and other products from the Selecta range provide the ideal solution
for the companys manufacturing needs. As a recent convert from Profile
22 the team has been impressed not only by the product but by the exemplary
support services and advice it received from the Birmingham based extrusion
company.
Martin Jackson considers the product is one of the most advanced and cost
competitive on the market. For Patersons it is vital to ensure that deliveries
are prompt and the team relies upon the efficiency provided by the team
at Selecta. Advice on projects has also proved valuable where technical
issues have arisen.
Martin Jackson comments, This area of the market sector is expanding
continually and we have to ensure that the installations are reliable
and secure as well as aesthetically pleasing. As installation schedules
are always exceedingly tight, it is vital that all orders are manufactured
accurately and that they are delivered on time.
He concludes, One of the main reasons for choosing Selecta is that
we know we can rely upon the quality of the product and recognise how
competitively priced the Advance 70 system is in comparison to other products.
This business sector can be aggressive and with the standards available
from Selecta in terms of product and support I can be confident with our
installations and the future progression of this company.
Mark Richmond, Sales and Marketing Director, Selecta Systems comments,
At Selecta we understand the demands put upon fabricators and will
ensure that our customers needs take priority. We believe in offering
only the best in terms of product and support services to ensure our customers
can optimise leads and develop the full potential of their business.

SFS
intec Dynamic 2D Speeds Up the Process
Trade
window and door supplier Sierra Windows has increased manufacturing efficiency
at its 50,000 sq ft Devon factory by 40% on all its PVC door applications,
with its switch to the Dynamic 2D hinge from SFS intec playing a key role.
The Dynamic 2D hinge from SFS intec has enabled Sierra windows to break
down door fabrication into three stages, creating a smooth, quicker flowline
through production rather than fitting the door hinges in one lengthy
process. The new approach is divided into preparing the holes, then fitting
the hinge to the door sash and outerframe separately which improves manufacturing
efficiency and productivity.

(L-R)
Rod Johnson from SFS intec with Adrian Lamacraft from Sierra Windows in
the 50,000 sq ft Devon factory.
Using
the new hinge has also improved the efficiency of the in-house training
programme as employees can now be trained on one aspect of the manufacturing
process rather then the whole process.
Bob Campbell, Production Manager at Sierra Windows, says, Previously
we experienced a bottleneck effect with door orders. Since using the Dynamic
2D hinge and creating an efficient production line we can meet demand
quicker, improving customer satisfaction and the overall production productivity.
In testing, the technically advanced hinge from SFS intec easily meets
the requirements of PAS 24 testing in appropriate door sets, offering
superior door security through its robust, quality design. The Dynamic
2D hinge also delivers enhanced aesthetics with softer sightlines and
a range of standard colours including white, brown, black, gold, caramel
and chrome to colour match with each profile style.
Nigel Wood, hinge technology product manager at SFS intec, says, Making
small changes can have a big difference and the experience at Sierra Windows
is a perfect example. Just switching to using the Dynamic 2D hinge has
helped improve manufacturing efficiency by 40%, which ultimately improves
customer satisfaction as door orders can be processed quicker.
The advanced hinge has also been designed to remedy the problems
of sagging doors reducing the need for costly call backs highlighting
the extensive benefits of the Dynamic 2D hinge throughout manufacture,
installation and long term performance.

durable, energy-efficient PVC-U windows, doors, conservatories and rainwater

in 1972 and in those days he was working with aluminium and hardwood frames.
Things have changed a lot since then as we are now installing low-maintenance,
energy-efficient PVC-U products in a wide range of colours and styles.
I took over as managing director two years ago and BJ Bevan still
maintains the same high standards of customer service and product choice
as it always has.
BJ Bevan is continuing to build upon its reputation for providing a personal,
reliable and trusted service to its customers and this clearly shows.
Martin said: Most of our business comes from recommendations alone
and this is how it has always been. We are now working with the next generation
of customers and are pleased that parents are recommending our service

With new products being introduced to the market all the time, it's

Only
Reflex Branded Products can be Genuine Reflex Units
With
some off-the-shelf blue tint products being re-branded as specialist conservatory
glass, it's easy for potential customers to be mis-sold products that
are not custom made like Reflex, which has the famous blue solar control
coating applied in the factory prior to unit fabrication, says Roof-Maker.
Regular
customers of Reflex heat reflective glass units will already be familiar
with the new branding that the units now feature. The logo and toughened
safety markings are permanently etched inside the unit using a system
that gives a crisp, good quality branding for a good quality product.
Now, homeowners can easily confirm for themselves that they have received
a one hundred per cent genuine Reflex glass unit purpose-designed for
year-round comfort and not an inferior look-alike that cannot be expected
to perform to the same high standards.
To produce a coated glass product in-house is very specialist and
the fact that we do, says Reflex MD Scott Nicholas, surprises
a lot of our competitors who just would not go to the trouble.
Reflex heat reflective glass units for conservatory roof and side walls
are manufactured exclusively by Roof-Maker. In this speciality area the
company is unique in this method of manufacture, by taking standard float
glass and applying specialist coatings it to make it both UV and IR blocking.
UV light is responsible for fading colours from surfaces over time, including
furnishings, fabrics, and even the most durable flooring materials. IR
(Infra Red) causes undue heat build-up in conservatories during the Summer
months.
The development of this ceramic coating over the last three years
is the reason why Reflex out performs all other conservatory roof glass
products currently on the market today, says Scott. And by
specifying Reflex, not only can substantial savings running into the thousands
of Pounds be made on not having to buy specially made blinds, but the
conservatory will also remain cooler in Summer and warmer in Winter.
The azure blue tint that we have created is very attractive in itself
and no wishy-washy insipid colour like some products on the market which
can only offer very limited solar control. Our coating also features a
low external reflection that makes it more suitable for domestic installations
as it results in less of a mirror effect.
While this aspect is fine for some commercial installations, it is not
entirely appropriate in the average garden setting. We listened to our
customers who told us that with a south facing installation they wanted
a glass that offered good glare and heat control, but without appearing
too reflective.

Glazing
Bars 'Made Easy'
With
the increase in the demand for Georgian style windows with full and plant
on glazing bars the joinery manufacturer T J Ross (Joiners) Ltd of Fife
has invested in a Stegherr KSF2/4 Closed halving joint machine.
Mr
Murray Hain of T J Ross visited the Ligna exhibition in Hanover last year
and viewed the Stegherr KSF2/4 working on the stand and was impressed
with the simplicity of operation and the quality of the joint produced.
The KSF2/4 has four working elements, the top and bottom cutterheads produce
the mitred part of the joint and the front and rear grooving tools produce
the closed halving.
Having four heads gives the advantage of being able to produce both parts
of the joint without turning the components through 180º to make the matching
joint.
To work along side the KSF2/4 T J Ross has also installed the Stegherr
KF/Mini end scribing machine to produce finished length glazing bars with
scribed ends prior to being jointed on the KSF2/4. The KF/Mini can produce
perfect end scribes in fully profiled stock without any splintering or
breakout.
The two Stegherr machines will reduce the cost and speed up production
of the astragals and allow them to be assembled prior to being finished
in the spray shop as a complete unit. This will give the advantages of
faster fitting of astragals, improved appearance and better weathering.
The machines in the Stegherr range can be demonstrated at the showroom
of John Penny Woodworking Machinery Ltd in Abingdon or a wider look at
the full range can be organised at the factory of Stegherr in Germany.
The Stegherr range of machines encompass a number of standard and special
machines for the production of wooden windows and the company says that
it is well known for its ability to solve problems by listening to its
customers.

Quantal
Expands In-house Paint Shop Capacity
Conservatory
roofing systems specialist Quantal has announced major investment in its
state-of-the-art paint shop facility to help support fabricators and installers
in meeting the growing demand for new coloured conservatories.
Market research reveals that choice of colour is of growing importance
to householders, particularly in the high-end conservatory market.
Following major investment, Quantal has significantly increased the size
of its paint shop operation delivering premium-quality sprayed roofing
systems.
The company says that this investment means that Quantal is now able to
offer fabricators and installers an unrivalled service and can support
them in taking advantage of the new opportunities generated by the growth
in consumer demand for a choice of colours.
Ian Cocken, national sales manager, Quantal, said: The conservatory
market remains competitive but there is continuing scope for new business,
providing the right range of products is on offer.
Over the last four years, we have seen a growing demand from homeowners
for more choice of colours and although the general conservatory market
has remained challenging, the top end of the market has continued to enjoy
steady growth as customers are prepared to pay a premium for choice and
quality.
The addition of colour to a conservatory range can generate new
leads for fabricators and installers, particularly with homeowners that
are looking for a conservatory with style and distinction, as colour gives
them an edge in the marketplace and gets new customers through the door.
In Quantal's paint shop, conservatory roofing systems can be produced
in any RAL or BS shade to allow customers an infinite choice across the
whole range of conservatory designs. Paint is 'sprayed and baked on' at
60° centigrade using the same high-grade acrylic formulation and technology
employed on modern commercial applications. The result is a totally colourfast
and durable finish, fully guaranteed for 10 years.
Ian said: Quantal specialises exclusively in painting conservatory
roofs. With between 300 and 400 individual parts to a conservatory, every
side of each part needs to be painted and this is why our significantly
increased paint shop capacity is so beneficial to the service we provide.
Companies need to be able to offer consumers the highest standard
of product and service they can if they are to take advantage of the greater
margins that this end of the market has to offer.
"There is growing consumer demand for a wider choice of colour options,
particularly in the high-end conservatory market where homeowners are
looking for products that will fit in with and complement their homes.
More importantly, they are prepared to pay a premium for them.
This can provide a stream of critical extra profit margin at a time
when other sectors in the market are tight.

Flat Out to Increase your Profits!
Flat roof replacement is fast becoming a major source of increased profits
for a growing number of window and fascia installation companies, and
with today's advanced products, installation is cleaner, safer and by
utilising cold working systems insurance premiums are also
kept low.
National Roofing, a specialist supplier of EPDM roofing materials, can
offer installing companies a low cost product to enable them to capture
a share of this burgeoning market. Gone are the days of working at height
with hot bitumen and layer upon layer of felt; nowadays EPDM rubber is
the ideal flat roof replacement product, with its ease of handling, installing
and a life span proven to be in excess of 50 years! With approved installer
training schemes available for the EPDM products the installer can offer
product warranties of 20 years to the homeowner.
National Roofing's general manager, Chris Reeks, explains the benefits
for targeting this field of home improvement. The market place for
flat roof replacement is huge; there are literally millions of square
metres of flat roofs in existence across the UK, most of which have been
replaced in felt every few years as it was seen as the only covering available
until now. By offering the EPDM coverings as an alternative to the felt,
particularly at the time of sale of windows and doors or fascias, the
installing company can provide the homeowner with a practically maintenance
free exterior to their home that will last for many years!
The EPDM products that National Roofing supplies have been in successful
use across the USA and Europe for decades, and more recently in the UK
for large commercial buildings and projects as well as domestic dwellings.
Chris continues, The applications for the EPDM products are numerous;
as well as flat roofs you can also cover pitched roofs, valleys, box gutters,
walkways and balustrades and many more areas besides. Furthermore, we
supply a full range of edge and finishing trims in PVC or metal to complete
the installation to maximum effect and to complement the home.
Supplying two EPDM systems, National Roofing can offer delivery nationwide
within a maximum 5 working days. Whether using the self adhesive system,
with small roll sizes for ease of portability, or the one piece system
that offers cut to size dimensions for less waste and easy handling, both
the systems are straightforward to install with minimal fuss and mess.
With margins fast disappearing and market share becoming ever more
difficult to maintain adds Chris, offering a bolt on product
such as flat roof replacement with our easy to install durable EPDM products
has got to be the way forward for surviving the lean times ahead.

Sash
and Paddy, Paddy and Sash!
He
might spend a lot of time on the road, and there's not much call for new
doors and windows in a battered old motorhome, but actor and comedian
Patrick McGuinness has taken a break from his alter ego, Paddy (from Max
and Paddy's Road to Nowhere), to renovate a house in Bolton. And he is
relying upon Sash UK to help him!
The
detached property is in dire need of repair and restoration and part of
the project included installing new windows and doors. Sash was recommended
by Paddy's interior designer and he decided to see for himself just what
the company had to offer. Two visits to Sash's factory later, and he made
his decision, choosing Sash's Vertical sliders and patio doors. In addition,
Sash provided a bespoke solution in the form of a large arched window
to fit into one side of the house to bring in more light and provide a
visually appealing feature.
But it didn't end with fenestration. The company's Fitrite range of fencing
also caught his eye and as he was looking for something strong and maintenance
free to protect his dog from falling over the ravine at the end of the
garden, the Fitrite fencing proved ideal!
Quality and aesthetic appeal were at the forefront of the specification
of the Sash products and Patrick is delighted with the results. Although
the house won't be complete until later this year, the installation of
the Sash doors and windows have already made a massive impact on the visual
appearance of the house, comments Dave Ruzicka, Managing Director
at Sash. We are delighted that Patrick recognised the value of our
doors, windows and fencing product ranges as well as our ability to create
tailor made solutions. As his character in Road to Nowhere would say,
'dink dank do, job well done!'

Middlesbrough
Named Wost Place To Live in Channel 4 Poll
Property
experts Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp present the full list of the
best and worst places to live in the UK in a special live show on Wednesday
17th October at 9pm on Channel 4. Now the most talked about countdown
on television, the programme unveils what's hot and what's not in the
property market - based on the criteria of crime, environment, lifestyle,
health, education and employment.
While last year's controversial 'worst' place Hackney has improved enough
to now be ranked 12th on the 'worst' list, Middlesbrough has finally been
found to be the overall 'worst', having previously been in 6th worst place
last year and 5th worst place in 2005. And Hull makes a return to the
list as the 2nd worst place to live, following it being declared the 'worst'
place in 2005, but then improving enough to not even make the top 10 last
year. And it's not good news for London with 25% of the worst list being
made up of London Local Authorities, while Scotland and Northern Ireland
don't feature at all.
We can exclusively reveal the 20 'worst' places to live 2007 -
1: Middlesbrough - North East (6th last year)
2: Hull - Humberside
3: Newham - East London (4th last year)
4: Nottingham - East Midlands (7th last year)
5: Merthyr Tydfil - South Wales (3rd last year)
6: North East Lincolnshire - Eastern England
7: Islington - North London (5th last year)
8: Blaenau Gwent - South Wales (9th last year)
9: Mansfield - East Midlands
10: Knowsley - Merseyside
11: Blackpool - North West
12: Hackney - East London (1ST last year)
13: Stoke-on-Trent - Staffordshire
14: Barking & Dagenham - East London
15: Doncaster - South Yorkshire
16: Cannock Chase - Staffordshire
17: Manchester - North West (10th last year)
18: Haringey - North London
19: Burnley - Lancashire
20: Hartlepool - North East
The results of the 'best' list remain tightly under wraps, to be revealed
live on Wednesday night.
This year, for the first time, viewers can have a say on the results of
the poll. By going to www.channel4.com/4homes
anyone can send in comments about where they live, and rate their region
on the interactive ratings table and map.
On Wednesday night when the live show airs, the best comments may be read
out by Phil and Kirstie, plus during the programme viewers can also text
in their opinions on the poll results and areas featured.
Phil Spencer says: 'Each year we seem to create a storm of controversy
with this survey, but it's all based on official data and all we do is
tell you the results. It's always edge-of-the-seat stuff when it comes
to revealing the best and worst, and this year won't be any different'.
Kirstie Allsopp says: 'Announcing this year's results live for the very
first time will just add to the tension of finding out who has topped
our poll. And what I want more than anything is to champion, not condemn,
the places on the worst list as there are some real diamonds in the rough'.
Crystal
Direct Kidnaps 'Polly the Parrot'
When
delivering a recent order to Feature Window UK in Southend, Essex, Crystal
Direct's delivery drivers didn't get their usual cup of tea. So they decided
they would take something else instead: owner, Graham White's treasured
stuffed toy parrot!
Polly didn't put the kettle on
Chief kidnapper and Transport Manager for the national trade fabricator
Crystal Direct, Dave Kiteley explains: We know Graham well and when
our usual cuppa wasn't available because Graham implied he had a hard
day ahead of him and we had an 'easy one', I decided to take Polly with
us to prove we work hard too. In the 90 days she's been with us, Polly
has been all over the UK and even to Belgium! Polly is being well looked
after and preparing for her trip with a special order from Crystal which
is being sent to Jamaica... We've kept Graham fully advised of her travels
and have sent him photographs of her in each location.
Graham White, owner of Feature Windows UK made this plea to Crystal's
drivers: Over the eight years we have traded, I have built a great
relationship with Crystal Direct. The companys prices are competitive;
the team is always extremely approachable and reliable, until now! If
they bring Polly back soon, all will be forgiven and I'll even promise
to make the tea next delivery.
