Stand
Sales Gather Pace for GP&T
Almost
half of the targeted exhibition stand sales had been sold for Glass Processing
& Technology (GP&T) by early May, with over 6 months to go until
the event takes place. This milestone was reached after a flurry of activity
that has resulted in over 2000 square metres of exhibition stand space
being contracted for the event, which will give the UK glass industry
its own dedicated exhibition and conference showcase.
GP&T was launched folowing extensive research that confirmed a desire
by the UK flat glass industry to have its own event, and amongst specifiers
who expressed the need for a concise, independent information forum. To
take place at the Natidnal Exhibition Centre (NEC), the UK's most prestigious
exhibition and conference facility on Ilth, 12th and 13th November 2003,
GP&T has quickly gained widespread support from glass manufacturers,
processors and merchants, as well as designers and specifiers of glass
in buildings and other sectors such as retail interiors, the furniture
industry and other large scale users.
Leah Tidy, sales manager for GP&T says the sales figure is remarkable
for a launch event: 'Glass Processing & Technology has attracted widespread
support from the beginning, but the real desire for an exhibition can
only be measured in the number of companies that actually book exhibition
stand space to take part. To reach this figure so early confirms the desire
for the event - we are delighted!'
The UK's glass machinery and ancillaries distributors have been the fastest
to realise the potential for GP&T, as exhibitions are a proven medium
for showing and demonstrating often very large production and processing
lines. It is anticipated that practical demonstrations and working displays
will characterise the event, offering many glass professionals the first
UK opportunity to see and try many of the products and services to be
exhibited.
A full range of services and products is already represented at GP&T,
including processing and IGU production machinery, software, logistics,
furnaces and glass production. The accompanying seminar programme is being
developed to offer glass specifiers a full range of design and application-based
topics, with the glass-processing programme being created by the organisers
of Glass Processing Days, the world's largest industry Conferencece held
biennially in Finland.
Glass Processing & Technology will be held in Hall 1 of the National
Exhibition centre at Birmingham, on IIth, I2th and 13th November 2003.

Major
Report on the UK Commercial Glazing Market 2002
AMA
Research has recently published the third edition of the UK Commercial
Glazing Market Report. The report presents a comprehensive and up-to-date
review, looking in detail at the industry trends to date, as well as future
opportunities and threats. The report represents an aid to sales and marketing
professionals in, or interested in, the industry.
The report analyses overall market and product market sizes and trends;
market structure and key companies in the systems and contracting sectors,
including extensive coverage of foreign façade glazing and atrium
roofing contractors.
Emphasis is given to both qualitative and quantitative assessment of market
developments, with interpretation of relevant data to give alternative
viewpoints on future prospects. This 140+ page report is packed with relevant
and useful information and analysis and is available now at £565.
Summary
In the last few years, the UK commercial glazing systems market has grown
steadily, with office, retail and leisure newbuild and refurbishment having
provided most of the impetus, contributing to an estimated market value
of around £1.84 billion in 2002.
Since 1999, the overall market is estimated to have grown by over 50%
reflecting a significant upturn in demand and buoyancy in most sectors.
Forecasts indicate further growth of around 20% by 2006, as continued
Government investment in health and education stimulates the market for
new and refurbished buildings.
The commercial window market is the largest sector, accounting for approximately
40% of the total market. This sector has experienced high levels of growth,
largely due to demand from the private commercial sector. During the majority
of the 1990s, growth opportunities offered by the public sector had been
stifled by lack of investment. However, this area is currently experiencing
a construction boom due to the government's improvement programs in the
education and healthcare sectors, the majority of which are largely driven
by PFI (Private Finance Initiative) financed construction and RMI (repairs,
maintenance, improvement) projects.

In the commercial window market, aluminium and composites account for
around 57% in terms of value, though these are typically more expensive
than other frame materials. Aluminium is used in a wide range of commercial
applications ranging from schools to skyscrapers and is therefore more
resilient to any downturns in a particular sector than is the case for
other materials, such as PVCu and timber. PVCu and timber account for
around 28% and 10% respectively of the windows market by value. PVCu windows
are mainly specified for public sector buildings such as schools, NHS
hospitals and Local Government offices, and timber is mainly used where
local planning regulations stipulate its use e.g. the refurbishment of
'historic/traditional' buildings, and on small industrial estates.
The ground floor treatments segment is estimated to account for around
27% of the market by value, however it is difficult to analyse owing to
the wide range of applications. The market has seen substantial growth
over 2000-2001, largely due to substantial investment in shopping centre
developments, rail station upgrading and city centre regeneration projects.
However, in the medium term, the market looks to offer more steady growth
after the recent completion of many large-scale retail projects.
Façade glazing accounts for some 25% of the market by value, with
aluminium the most commonly specified frame material, which constitutes
around 82% of the market. The main impetus behind growth in the market
for curtain wall between 1999 and 2002 has been the rapid growth in the
new build and refurbishment programs for commercial offices. The increasing
number of planning approvals of 'skyscraper' buildings has led to a surge
in construction in London and throughout the UK, with many more at the
planning stage.
Roof-glazing is the smallest sector and accounts for an estimated 8% of
the market. This is broken down further into atrium/mall glazing, pre-fabricated
rooflights and patent glazing. Over the period 2000 - 2002, this sector
has seen significant growth. Key drivers include Millennium developments,
such as the roof over the British Museum's Great Court; shed glazing at
many of the mainline rail stations e.g Sheffield Midland and Brighton,
and mall roof-glazing at the many in-town shopping centre developments
e.g. West Quay Shopping centre in Southampton.
In April 2002, the revised Part L of the Building Regulations was introduced.
The aim of this is to improve energy efficiency in buildings through higher
insulation standards for glazing systems in order to meet reductions in
CO2 emissions in accordance with the Kyoto protocol. This has led to the
development of higher specification glass and frame materials, which have
now reflected on increased tender prices.
The public sector had until relatively recently suffered a decline in
investment. However, in 1998 the introduction of the 'New Deal for Schools'
led to dramatically increased construction output, and between 1999 and
2002 output is estimated to have risen by 74% in value. Also, £3bn
of PFI investment in healthcare has increased construction output from
1999-2002 by 27%. In 2002, construction in the public sector has been
buoyant, and growth seems set to continue with the ongoing investment
programs in the education, health and prisons sectors.

In the private commercial sector, the key driver will be mixed developments
which include commercial office space featuring retail and housing. The
strongest growth is expected to take place outside London, due to the
increasing saturation in office space and falling rents within the capital,
this situation will be further heightened once the current spate of high
rise construction projects are completed.
The aluminium systems sector can be broadly divided into bespoke and systems
segments although there are some companies that cover both markets. The
bespoke sector is characterised by low-volume high-cost façade
glazing projects, which have a considerable influence upon total market
performance while the systems sector consists of systems companies that
sell aluminium profiles to fabricators, which in turn manufacture and
usually install the glazing systems. The market leaders in the systems
sector are Kawneer, Sapa and Schüco which, together account for 35-40%
of the market.
The fabrication/installation sector is highly fragmented, partly due to
low barriers to entry and no significant economies of scale. Consequently,
rates of return tend to be below 5%, recently resulting in several company
failures. Leading companies include Solaglas, Dane Architectural, Charles
Henshaw, Glamalco, SLW Architectural Aluminium and Parry Bowen.
Large European companies have become the main contractors in the UK market,
these companies mainly focus on high-rise curtain wall and large atrium
glazing projects. Permasteelisa is currently the largest player in the
UK market and its position has been further strengthened following becoming
the majority share holder of Josef Gartner. Other leading companies are
Focchi, Schmidlin, Structal and Seele. Companies that are relatively new
to the UK market, but which are currently expanding their presence, include
Waagner Biro, GIG Fassadenbau, BUG Alu-technik, Metallbau Frueh and Eiffel.
With the decline in construction in many other European countries more
continental contractors are expected to focus on the large number of high
value contracts for planned skyscraper and large office buildings to be
construction or refurbished in the UK over the next few years.

Network
Veka's Back on the Cowboy Trail
Network
Veka has launched another crackdown on bogus membership claims after receiving
a tip-off about a company in Somerset.
The organisation has issued warnings to local media, stressing that genuine
members' employees all carry centrally-issued identity cards and urging
householders to ask to see the ID if they have any suspicions at all about
the caller.
It is also repeating its appeal to the trade for information on any other
abuses by rogue installers.
This is Network VEKA's fourth investigation into false membership claims
by traders. Previous reports in Aberdeen, Greater Manchester and an earlier
occurrence in the West Country put an end to the misrepresentations but
the companies involved are still under observation.
Peter Ward, Network Veka's South of England Quality Auditor, said: 'This
is only an informal investigation for the moment and we are not releasing
the name of the company involved. But we will not hesitate to take matters
further if we hear any more evidence of attempted deception.
'Such false claims would leave householders with no guarantee protection
at all but could also seriously damage Network Veka's reputation.'

Pilkington
Crew Faces the Elements in Major Sailing Event
A
plucky crew of Pilkington employees recently braved severe weather conditions
to finish eighth out of 17 teams in a first round of the Industry Sailing
Challenge 2003, the largest corporate sailing event in the world. The
Pilkington team - led by skipper John Brighouse - faced gusty Force 7
winds of up to 40 knots to complete the challenge successfully.
Now
in its 17th year, the Industry Sailing Challenge - the brainchild of yacht
charter and watersports company Sunsail UK - has become the definitive
sporting event in which to compete against other businesses, and attracts
all types and sizes of entrant, from household brand names to small independents.
This year's event followed the format of four initial challenge rounds
starting in the Solent - with a typically tough course taking the teams
twice non-stop around the Isle of Wight - and the Grand Final is due to
take place at the end of July.
The Pilkington team had already faced tough odds without the weather complications:
crews were restricted to a maximum of six people, making the racing harder
work as the Sunsail 37 yachts used for the challenge normally race with
a crew of eight.
However, the real test came when high winds began to make sailing conditions
increasingly difficult, says skipper John Brighouse:
'Things were getting very rough out there to say the least. We were surfing
waves up to ten feet high as we rounded St Catherine's Point south of
the Isle of Wight, a catamaran capsized about six miles south of us. Much
to everyone's relief, the race was curtailed shortly after that at one
circuit rather than two. The organisers felt that continuing to sail in
those conditions at night would have been too dangerous. We certainly
agreed with that!'
Despite the tough conditions, though, John and the team were not put off
and plan to try again at next year's challenge:
'This was only our second race as a team, and I was really pleased with
this creditable result. The winners of our round, DuPont, have been competing
in the event for eight years, so I think we did really well. With the
knowledge we have now gained on the route and the all too important tidal
streams around the island, I feel sure that we will improve our performance
still further at next year's Industry Sailing Challenge.'

Lister
Trade Frames with Stuga - Consistent Growth from Consistent Quality
Lister
Trade Frames of Stoke on Trent has built a reputation over the last 27
years for the company's quality window frames. To further guarantee consistency
of that quality Lister has recently invested in the latest machining centre
from Stuga, and at a total cost to Lister of around £250,000.00
it had to produce tangible results.
The
Flowline centre was chosen by Listers production director Mr Darren Pusey,
who wanted a single machine to replace several individual operations and
provide consistent machining of the window profiles. Darren said 'We aim
for very high standards on our products, and we needed to guarantee that
quality, every time. Careful consideration was taken, and it was clear
that Stuga had the solution we were looking for'.
'Since Stuga commissioned the machine (six weeks ahead of our schedule)
the results have been immediate.' Darren continues 'the machine has enhanced
both our accuracy and quality but it has also improved our efficiency.
We now have an extra capacity of up to 800 frames a week which we are
rapidly filling and we are considering a second machine later this year'.
It looks like Lister is preparing for the next 27 years!
Stuga Limited is a British Engineering company specialising in building
automatic cutting & prepping machinery for the U.K. window and door
fabrication market. To date forty two Flowlines have been sold in three
years and thirty six have been installed.

Soar with Synseal's Global
Synseal
Extrusions Ltd has seen intense activity in recent months preparation
for the landmark launch of the Global Conservatory Roof. And it seems
to be paying off.
'The May 2003 launch represents the culmination of our eight month £1
million intensive development programme,' explains Nick Dutton, Sales
and Marketing Director of Synseal. 'At the time of writing one week prior
to launch, we already have commitment from new Global customers amounting
to 200 roofs a week.
'Shield Conservatories continue to contribute significantly to our customers'
sales and profitability too. The week commencing 12th May for example,
the total number of roofs going into the UK out of the Shield system was
in excess of 500. And we took orders for over 140 roofs in one day! Considering
we only came into the conservatory market eighteen months ago, what better
endorsement is there to show that our product and service is hitting the
mark?'

Avanti
Systems Doubles Production with new Kombimatec Machining Centre
Having recently moved into larger premises to fulfil further
growth potential, partitioning manufacturer Avanti Systems has given its
expansion plans a kick-start with its purchase of a state of the art machining
centre manufactured by UK supplier GTI-Kombimatec.
Avanti Systems is an award winning manufacturer of design-led partition
and wall solutions. The company claims to be the UK's largest independent
partitioning manufacturer, offering an extensive range of partitioning
and storage wall options for commercial and office interiors. Avanti's
move to new 20,000 sq ft premises prompted swift research into new machinery
to fuel a higher production output, and the company immediately contacted
GTI-Kombimatec. Says Avanti's Operations Director Mark Hilson:
'We have dealt with GTI-Kombimatec in the past with machinery purchases
and have always found them to be a reliable partner that gives an excellent
service.'
The decision to install the Kombimatec AMC702 Automatic Machining Centre
- which is used for milling and preparing Avanti door frames and aluminium
profiles for partitioning - was made due to the speed and accuracy offered
by the machine. Its ability to process two profile lengths simultaneously
instead of just one allows manufacturers to double production speed instantaneously.
A special tool enables the AMC702 to work on three sides of the profile
length, whilst axis movement on linear guides aided by circulating ball
screws enables both smooth operation and precise results. The 3 axes are
controlled via high-speed servo positioning drives, enabling quick cycle
times and accuracy to 0.1mm.
Mark Hilson is delighted with the machine's performance and its immediate
effects:
'The new AMC702 has enabled us to offer our customers an even better service
- it has improved our milling accuracy to within 0.1mm and we have doubled
the speed of our production almost overnight.'
Whilst offering speed and precision, the AMC702 is also safe to use, incorporating
a safety guard for the router spindle at the front of the machine, and
a safety gate at the rear protects the moving parts and personnel. The
AMC702 is available in both 4 metre and 6.5 metre versions to accommodate
4000mm and 6500mm X-axis travel respectively. A video of the machine in
operation can be viewed on the company's website at http://www.gtikombi.demon.co.uk/downloads.

Versatile
Opportunities in New Build
Millgate Windows and Conservatories has been a valued customer of the
Burles Group since its inception and is reaping the rewards of the combination
of Veka frames and Versatile Roof System, which has caught the eye of
elite house builders throughout the east of England.
The close working relationship between Versatile Limited, fabricator Modplan
and the team at Millgate, has developed over the years to achieve a partnership,
which is dedicated to offering exceptional product and service.
Christine Grocock, new build manager for Millgate, explains how the company
extends this partnership approach to the house building community and
it's prospective buyers. 'When a new site is due for development we work
closely with the appropriate builder to understand the site layout and
the house designs, so that when we discuss a new purchase with the consumer
we have already investigated the alternative options for each individual
plot, enabling us to advise immediately on the conservatory design and
structure accordingly.'
Differentiation is an important factor when it comes to new developments,
which is why the Versatile roof system is attractive to builders. The
grp and pvc components allow a greater flexibility in styles as well as
providing a structural integrity and durability which is built in to the
appearance. For example, instead of having to situate the guttering on
the side of the conservatory with Versatile the gutter is an integral
part of the ring beam, providing a neater finish, whilst saving considerable
time on site.
Millgate extend the benefit of differentiation into their service criteria.
'We provide a detailed, predetermined price list, supplied with a comprehensive
specification,' continues Christine. 'Obviously this can be amended to
suit individual requirements, but in general the specification is so high
that home buyers are surprised at the extent to which it exceeds their
needs, particularly in relation to their budget and competitor offerings.'
Knowing that their site requirements will be fulfilled to the minute is
a prerequisite for house builders, which is why the close partnership
between Millgate and the Burles Group, together with their combined expertise
and experience is invaluable. What's more, the design of the Versatile
roof allows quick and easy construction.
'The new build sector provides many challenges,' says David Burles, 'but
with the right product and service there are many opportunities. It is
a pleasure to work with a company whose high standards of service echo
our own and we are proud to have played such a large part in their success.'

positioning network. Datatrak enables vehicles to be pinpointed exactly
and guided to their destinations using the fastest and most cost effective
route. With features such as event activated tracking and a two-way data
capability, the system can monitor in-vehicle events and status for Hallmark
so that the company can respond quickly to unexpected events.
Hallmark Group's Transport Manager Lorraine Jackson believes that the
new system will enhance the company's reputation as a first-class supplier:
'The benefits of using this system are numerous: we can now send the nearest
and most appropriate vehicle to a location quickly and easily, meaning
we can improve our delivery times and service still further. Personnel
can be scheduled more efficiently and we can maintain our agreed service
levels as we grow by reducing late arrivals, and eliminating them wherever
possible. Ultimately, it is our customers who will benefit most from it,
which is exactly how it should be.'

Guardian
Systems Ltd Continues to Expand in the New Build Market
Window fabricator, Guardian Systems of Stirling, has recently
been employed by MCA Homes of Alloa to manufacture and supply windows,
doors and French doors for 250 new homes.
MCA Homes, a local housebuilder, is currently constructing new homes at
two sites in the Stirling area. The building of the new houses is scheduled
to run for between 18 months and two years, during which time Guardian
Systems has been contracted to fabricate all PVCu windows and doors for
both sites.
Guardian Systems recently moved to new 10,000 sq ft premises in which
its sister company, Guardian Soft Furnishings, shares the premises. The
contract with MCA Homes is in line with the companys plans to expand
its new build business from its current level of around 40%. To facilitate
this expansion, Guardian recently purchased new fabricating machines and
now manufactures around 150 frames each week including conservatories
and doors using HW Systems HW70 Profile.
Fred Findlay, Managing Director at Guardian Systems says 'This innovative
HW70 profile is perfect for our requirements in the new build sector.
Its versatility allows us to fabricate many types of window including
casements, tilt and turn, fully reversible and vertical sliders'.

Essex
Yacht Club Chooses Goldline for Mine-Sweeper 'HMS Wilton'
The
Whiteline Group, the South East specialist trade fabricator of Goldline
PVCu windows and doors, has announced the specification of Goldline windows
and doors for what is most probably Goldline's, and installation company
Special F.X. Windows, Benfleet, Essex, most unusual installation application
to date; aboard Essex Yacht Club's ex-navy Mine-Sweeper, 'HMS Wilton'.
And
'Wilton' is as truly unique as it sounds. When it was built in 1970 it
was the first one of its kind in the world, built from fibreglass and
costing the UK tax-payer over thirty million pounds. Virtually explosion
proof and built of fire-proof materials, the prototype ship was over-engineered
in order to learn from its construction. This was achieved, and following
ships were made lighter and larger.
De-commissioned in 1996 as a training vehicle for Cadets, 'Wilton' came
out of service two years ago, was bought by a private individual and is
now owned by the 100-year old Essex Yacht Club to form its headquarters.
The club is no stranger to this arrangement, owning four ships in the
past, each one ending its steel life-cycle with the club. This cycle is
now due to come to a close, with 'Wilton' expected to have a life-expectancy
of 100 years plus.
Stripping the ship of its engines, propellers and bulk heads, opening
up the accommodation rooms and building a Goldline Classic 58mm under-cover
reception bar and saloon, with chamfered outer frames, forms part of the
18-month transformation, with fifty foot of the one hundred and fifty
foot length, due to incorporate Goldline products. Downstairs, a two-tiered
dining room and lounge is planned with Goldline windows to bring natural
daylight into the hull.
Keen to adhere to the values that the club and its members keenly hold
on to, quality and tradition echoes though the refurbishment of 'Wilton'.
In addition to the Goldline windows and French doors, spiral staircases
are being used together with extensive use of mahogany and oak. Work to
date has been paid for through the widespread amount of non-ferrous metals
that have been stripped from the ship. Copper and bronze make up a large
proportion of this and have funded labour, tools and disposables. Voluntary
effort and club funds subsidise the difference.
Whiteline is supplying its windows through Essex installation company
Special F.X. who's head designer Jason Butler comments 'This is a fantastic
installation opportunity which we are pleased to be associated with. Having
worked with the Club Committee on previous occasions, Essex Yacht Club
is confident in the use of Goldline windows and doors for both land and
sea. We have been using Goldline frames exclusively for two years now
and are pleased we made the switch'.
Whiteline confirms its profiles reliability in this application and quotes
the fifteen year Kommerling Weathering Test held on the North Sea Coast,
Germany. This test was against sea air, salt water, storms and sun rays
with the resulting profiles free of scratches, cracks, discolourations
and other damage. Whiteline will be following 'Wilton's' progress, through
installation, refurbishment and final docking at Leigh-on-Sea, on the
south coast of Essex.
ACDM
Welcomes SBD Certification
Members of the Association of Composite Door Manufacturers are preparing
for a new Certification process for composite doors that is to be introduced
later this year by Secured by Design (SBD), the UK Police flagship initiative
supporting the principles of designing out crime.
The present SBD requirement for testing composite doors to PAS 23 &
24 will be extended to require registration with an independent certification
body. Third party certification includes auditing of material specification,
manufacturing processes, product quality and testing of sample products.
Explains SBD spokesman Jon Cole: 'Testing to PAS 23 & 24 provides
a good indication of the standard to which a composite door is designed
and made, but it doesn't ensure that all doors leaving the factory meet
the same standard of the original product that was tested.
'Certification will guarantee that every door is manufactured to the highest
standards and ensure that customers are getting what they have specified.'
PAS 23 & 24 testing and a Secured by Design licence are already established
as the pre-qualification for ACDM members and, as Jon Cole explains, Certification
and the work on the Annex necessary to introduce it, are the result of
a close working relationship between SBD and the ACDM.
'The ACDM has been very supportive of our proposals to introduce Certification,
and acknowledges that the move can only benefit the industry.' He says.
He adds that the Certification of composite doors will entail SBD handing
over some of the policing of the auditing process to third-party authorities
and trade bodies, as has already happened with the window industry.
Commenting for the ACDM, technical officer Owen Jones warns that there
are still unscrupulous companies operating outside SBD, that claim to
meet the standards, and adds: 'Certification is another important step
towards ensuring that customers are able to identify those manufacturers
whose composite doors meet the very highest standards.'
Synseal's
Solution for Aluminium Woodgrain top Capping
Synseal Extrusions Ltd is launching aluminium woodgrain top capping in
response to customer concern about top capping distortion that has occurred
on other brands. The systems company researched the market and found that
in very specific geographical areas, distortion can occur. 'We didn't
want to take any risks, no matter how slight,' comments Nick Dutton, Sales
and Marketing Director of Synseal, 'but we also didn't want to just change
to brown aluminium, unlike other suppliers.
'Our solution is to change all woodgrain conservatories to include aluminium
rafters, hips and ridge top cappings. These aluminium products will be
painted brown and identical woodgrain foil applied. They will also have
an internal PVCu clip detail to ensure the fit and function of the product
remains the same.'

Colour at UKF
UK
Fasteners has launched colour coded labels to make its screws easily identifiable
for fabricators on the shop floor.
Getting the simple things in production right can make all the difference.
Get them wrong and the small ripple caused by, say, using the wrong screw
can have devastating effects further down the line. 'Many a serious malfunction
of a product can be traced to the simplest error on the shop floor,' comments
David Ballinger, Managing Director of UK Fasteners Ltd. 'On initial viewing,
a box of screws is a box of screws, but choosing and using the wrong one
has consequences, which are usually detrimental. The identification of
a specific product is vital.
'We think we've got the answer with our new colour coded labels. Each
category of screw is in a box that is colour-coded according to its contents.
People on the shop floor will be able to see immediately what screw to
use, without having to peer at the label on the box. Reordering will be
a lot simpler too.
'This small step towards total customer service is further proof of our
commitment to assisting specifiers and fabricators in every possible way.'

Modplan
- The Home of Customer Service
'Longevity
of customer relationships, combined with positive response to regular
customer surveys, is a clear testimony to the satisfaction felt by Modplan
customers.' says the company.
But for this Veka fabricator, continual improvement is a way of life,
which is why after many months of research and considerable investment,
Modplan has now successfully installed a specialist software system that
will have a large impact right across the business.
'We were keen to source an operating system capable of handling the future
demands of our diverse customer base, enabling us to remain competitive
well into the 21st century' explains Andrew Evans, Modplan's processing
manager.
The first phase of the new system has already created improved internal
communication, which in turn means that processes from receipt of order,
through to shop floor operations and dispatch, can be dealt with much
more quickly. But for Andrew and the team at Modplan, the main achievement
is that the first stage has been completed without causing any disruption
to the company's existing standards.
'We chose First Degree precisely because they could provide the support
and expertise we needed to manage such an ambitious, long term project
and help us achieve a smooth transition', continues Andrew. 'At present
the system has helped to improve the management of our whole scheduling
and production system, but we will be working closely with First Degree,
so that over time our customers will receive many additional benefits.'
As the system is implemented further, Modplan will be able to receive
orders electronically, offering customers a front end package which will
allow immediate access to their purchase price and glass sizes. It will
also give them the facility to add their own on-costs and subsequently
produce clear and professional quotations for presentation to the end
user.
'Ultimately, the system will help us to reduce our cost base, whilst offering
customers a simpler, quicker and more efficient method of purchasing'
concludes Andrew.

Unitec
Launches the new Roto TSL
Unitec
is now stocking and promoting the new Twin-Cam Security Lock (TSL) from
Roto.
In addition to Unitec's range of shoot bolt locks, the company considers
the new 'Secured by Design' police preferred specification, TSL to be
a major step forward in high security bolts. The TSL offers unique features
in that each locking point incorporates twin mushroom cams, which via
the TSL's innovative mechanism drives the security cams to converge into
the double entry striker. Any attempt to prise one cam from its locked
position merely forces the opposite cam further into the striker.
Unitec's technical Manager, Mike Carroll, advises that the BS 7950 tested
and certified TSL does not need cropping, is less sensitive to manufacturers
tolerances because the entire fitting is only on one surface, requires
fewer strikers and does not require plates for corner supports or additional
routing for the drive train. TSL provides full cam adjustability and the
quality reassurance of Roto's 500 hours salt spray testing and a ten-year
guarantee.
Overall the TSL is simple to fit, requires fewer strikers and keeps, thereby
offering the real possibility of substantial cost savings and a noticeable
reduction in valuable installation time.

Gobain Solaglas Joins Current Solutia UK Partnership
Saint-Gobain
Solaglas has joined the current Solutia UK partnership to produce laminated
architectural glass with Vanceva Design, a new range of coloured, patterned
and textured polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayers specifically created
for laminated glass.
The Vanceva Design range comprises pvb interlayers which have the same
robust properties as clear standard laminated glass made with Saflex,
the PVB interlayer manufactured by Solutia. Laminated glass combines safety
and security properties, UV protection, sound insulation, durability and
ease of maintenance.
Vanceva Design incorporates eleven basic colours, nine designs and three
metallic textures. By superimposing up to four layers of colour, Saint-Gobain
Solaglas can create more than 1,000 different colours of laminated glass.
Additionally, layers of colour, pattern and texture can be combined to
produce original bespoke laminated glass.
Architects, interior designers and space planners can use laminated glass
with Vanceva Design for exterior and interior applications. This new range
combines aesthetic quality with technical performance and means that coloured,
patterned and textured laminated glass can be used as a structural and/or
design element.
Philip Oesau of Solutia said: 'As Saint-Gobain are major worldwide laminators,
we are delighted with the addition of Saint-Gobain Solaglas as UK partners
on our Vanceva Design range. It allows designers to employ an enormous
degree of creativity in both exterior and interior schemes. Coloured,
patterned and textured glass can be incorporated into a design with spectacular
results. Now that this new type of glass is available and on a large scale,
it offers huge and trouble free opportunities for designers to change
how our built environment looks in the years to come.'
'The Vanceva Design range complements our strategy to provide custom glazing
solutions for increasingly demanding architectural applications,' says
Group Marketing Manager of Saint-Gobain Solaglas, Darren Kearns.

Cristalglass Supplies Glass for Expansion of Madrid National Museum
Vitro
Cristalglass was selected to provide close to 15,000 square meters of
its extra-clear, double-glazing lsolar Multipact glass to expand the Reina
Sofia Center National Museum in Madrid. Supported by Spain's Culture and
Education Ministry, the museum is one of the most significant icon buildings
in Europe.
At the project's presentation ceremony, the architect and creator of the
museum's new design, Jean Nouvele, said, 'The final project to expand
the Reina Sofia Museum is the one I wanted, and is in line with what I
envisioned.' Nouvele confirmed that the construction will be concluded
by the end of 2003, and he expects the museum to be one of his 'building
stars'.
The new expansion will be built with glass, metal, and granite and be
comprised of three integrated structures united by an approximately two-acre
atrium, which will host temporary exhibition areas, a library and an auditorium.
At the same time, the Reina Sofia Museum is hosting a Jean Nouvele exhibition
of the famous French architect's most important building designs, including
the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, the Peking National Opera Building,
the Paris Arab World Institute, the Guggenheim Temporary Museum of Art
of Tokyo, and the Congress Cultural center of Lucerne, among others.
'Each new construction's quality standards are tougher, especially in
important icon buildings. Competition in the market is tough, and suppliers
have to deliver timely products that meet high professional standards.
Vitro Cristalglass is aware of this environment and leverages its competitive
advantages to provide consistently superior performance every single day,'
said lsaac Prado,VP of Vitro Cristalglass.
Vitro Cristalglass - a subsidiary of Mexican glass producer Vitro - is
