Launches Major Campaign To Support Environmental And Economic Credentials
Of PVC-U Windows And Doors
The British Plastics Federation Windows Group, which represents Britain's
PVC-U window manufacturers and suppliers, has launched a major promotional
campaign aimed at reinforcing the environmental and economic advantages
of their products to more than a thousand specifiers and architects involved
in social housing projects across London and South-East England.
The multi-faceted campaign includes specifier briefing leaflets, tenant
information, trade advertising, community radio programming and specifier
seminar support using expert presentations from the industry.
Launching
the 'Clear Choice for Windows' campaign, BPF Windows Group spokesman Thom
Lant said: 'This is a highly creative, all encompassing information programme
informing the London and South-East area initially but with the potential
in future to roll out across the UK. It aims to support the outstanding
credentials of our products from manufacture through to disposal.'
In spite of the fact that PVC-U windows and doors have an overwhelming
market share of more than 79% of new build; 84% of social and 85% of domestic
housing installations, the £3+ billion industry believes that specifiers
in local authorities and housing associations will welcome the reassurance
of expert opinion and the opportunity to up-date their understanding of
the role and value of PVC-U.
The new emphasis on sustainability in the industry is supported by independent
third party assessments made over the last two decades and complements
work the industry has been doing to ensure that recycling systems are
in place to recover the first PVC-U window products installed in the UK
nearly forty years ago and which are now becoming available as a result
of property refurbishment projects.
'Our industry is determined to demonstrate that it has strong environmental
credentials. We have uniquely adopted a Europe-wide commitment shared
by the entire PVC industry called 'Vinyl 2010.' This is dedicated to the
Sustainable Development of the PVC industry and its products and far exceeds
regulatory requirements. We have also achieved enormous success with our
'Recovinyl' Initiative which last year recovered and recycled over 6000
tonnes of PVC-U window profiles - almost 100% above forecast. This programme
has recruited fifty nationwide collectors feeding into 19 recycling operations
all of which has vastly increased the momentum for recovering and recycling
PVC-U windows and doors in the UK. When you add all this together, it
means that from the start of the life cycle we operate clean, safe processes
and at the end of forty years or more useful life for a PVC window, it
can be recycled to create new products,' said Mr Lant.
The PVC-U windows sector has also benefited from major improvements in
the technical performance of its products as well as in the range of style,
finishes, textures and colours available. The combination of these factors
ensures that PVC-U specified for social housing offers exceptional energy
efficiency, minimal on-going maintenance reducing the need to work at
heights, reduced environmental impacts and a choice of design which meets
all housing and architectural styles.

Edgetech
Energy Efficiency Seminar Sells out in Record Time
Unprecedented interest in its industry-wide seminar, Increase Your Profits:
Energy Efficiency in Focus, means Edgetech UK has had to extend the seating
area at the venue, the Ricoh Arena, not once but twice. And with 280 delegates
so far, registrations are still coming in! "Energy saving and how
to profit from it is obviously the hot issue for 2006," comments
Andy Jones, Sales Director and General Manager for Edgetech UK. 'It's
an opportunity for companies to quiz the experts and put their own views
forward. We expect a robust debate on the day, 10 May.
'Interest has been such that we're considering a further seminar later
in the year and other options for those who can't make it: transcripts
and DVDs of the presentations and discussions, for example, or even a
webcast. More information on these options will be available on www.521621.com/seminars
over the coming week.'
Interbuild
gets Huge Vote of Confidence
Major
market leading construction companies have been quick to back the move
for Interbuild to return to its traditional autumn dates.
Big building brands were among hundreds of companies who gave the switch
a massive vote of confidence by signing up for Interbuld 2007 - before
last week's show at the NEC had even finished.
Emap Construct, organisers of the UK's major building event, announced
during the show that the next Interbuild would take place in 2007 from
Sunday October 28th until Thursday November 1st.
And Event Director Gordon Thomas said: 'I'm delighted to say that construction
companies from the UK and across the world have reacted to the decision
by queuing up to book their places for Interbuild 2007.
'No less than 64 per cent of the 1,100-plus exhibitors this week have
applied for space. That mainly reflects the huge amount of business they
have generated in the past five days but I know for a fact that it's also
influenced by the change of dates.
'The decision to move to the autumn, when Interbuild always used to take
place, was based on a vast amount of research and consultation - and exhibitors
are pleased that we have acted on their views.'
Among the big industry names already booked to attend in 2007 are Lafarge,
H + H Celcon, Mercedes, Corus, Henkel and Bosch while companies situated
in the Canadian Group Pavilion will be returning after reporting an excellent
2006 event.
Although remaining at the NEC, Interbuild will move to new halls in 2007,
grouped around the piazza, which have been fully refurbished and offer
the latest facilities for conducting business in an attractive environment.
The aisles were busy from the moment the show doors opened at 9.30am on
Sunday 23rd April with visitors from across the UK - and from more than
70 other countries.
Although final attendance figures have not yet been confirmed, more than
40,000 people visited Interbuild 2006, confirming its place as the construction
industry's major event.
Added Gordon: 'It's immensely satisfying after two years of hard work
to have so much positive feedback and know that we have provided an ideal
marketplace for companies to meet and do business.'

roofline stockist GAP's eleven PVC-U Warehouses.
It's an exciting time for GAP, explains Jon Randles, GAP's
Group Purchasing Manager. Taking on Global 600 is great for our
customers. We constantly look for new products for our customers and after
extensive investigation, Global 600 came out top.
Synseal's support is great too. EVii, Synseal's state of the art exhibition
vehicle, has already visited all our branches so all our staff could see
the new roof. GAP is committed to training and product knowledge. When
there is a new product customers can be assured they are not on their
own when they try it.
From our network of eleven branches we support thousands of customers.
GAP stocks over 3,000 products to make it easy for them. They place one
order and they get one delivery. We expect our suppliers to have the same
customer focus, in Synseal we believe we've found a company which feels
the same.

Smart
Workers Urged to Stay Away the First Friday in May
Friday
May 5th has been designated National Work from Home Day by Work Wise UK,
the national three-year campaign promoting the wider adoption of smarter
working practices, such as flexible working, mobile working, remote working
and working from home.
Organisations and employees across the UK are being encouraged to try
out home working on National Work From Home Day as part of Work Wise Week
(May 3 - 9) which will highlight the benefits of smarter working practices
generally.
Working from home, even for part of the working week, would greatly enhance
peoples work-life balance. The reduction in travel alone could save
several hours per day, freeing up time to spend at home with the family
or on leisure activities. British workers spend by far the longest time
travelling in Europe as much as 47 working days per year (Samsung
research 2004), with commuters in the South East facing an average of
eight hours per week a whole extra working day!
The savings will not only be in time but also in cash: apart from the
transport costs there is the cappuccino and Danish on the way to the office,
lunch in the pub and, for some, congestion charges and parking.
Subsequent reductions in traffic volumes and passenger numbers on public
transport will result in less congestion and overcrowding, making travel
a more bearable chore for people who have no choice but to travel. Less
travel also means less pollution and CO2 emissions.
Phil Flaxton, chief executive of the IT Forum Foundation, a not-for-profit
organisation which is behind the campaign, said: 'For many, home working
is a far more productive and pleasant environment than the workplace.
'National Work from Home Day is not intended as a holiday, or an extension
of the weekend. Its aim is to let staff, and employers, see just how it
could work how productive we all can be.'
The concept of smarter working has been around for many years, but it
is the recent advances in technology which will have had a huge part to
play in enabling its wider adoption. The continuing widespread growth
of faster broadband across the UK, and the great steps made in mobile
technology, are opening the door for a large cross-section of the UK population
to benefit from smarter working.
BT is the first strategic partner to join Work Wise UK and this is fitting
as the company represents the UKs largest exponent of flexible working
practices. BT currently employs 64,000 flexible workers and 11,500 contracted
full time home workers.
Caroline Waters, director, people and policy, BT, said: 'The benefits
of flexible working are enormous and the impact on productivity and employee
satisfaction due to an improved work/ life balance has been underlined
by trusted organisations such as the DTI, CBI and TUC.
'As the leading practitioner of flexible working in the UK, we are delighted
to be supporting this initiative and look forward to taking part in Work
Wise week. However, without training and guidance the UKs workforce
will not be able to fully embrace a smarter way or working or experience
all the potential benefits. It is vital that an organisation like Work
Wise UK is on hand to provide helpful advice and support for both employers
and employees as they strive to change deep seated cultural associations
with work and working practices for the benefit of the country as a whole.'
Further information about Work Wise UK, and how organisations can participate
in Work Wise Week, can be found on the website http://www.workwiseuk.org.

Approved Tradespeople Required TrustMark Launches its Latest Recruitment
Campaign at Interbuild
TrustMark
launched a major trade recruitment campaign at Interbuild (23-27 April)
to help it reach its target of 25,000 registered firms by this time next
year.
The Government-backed scheme to help people find reputable firms to do
domestic repair, maintenance and improvement work has been signing up
more than 300 tradespeople a week since it launched to the general public
in January.
Through its 10 scheme operators approved so far, TrustMark can now offer
the public access to registered firms from a wide range of trades, including
builders, plumbers and heating engineers, electricians, garden landscaping
and hardscaping contractors, roofing contractors, damp-proofing and timber
treatment specialists, glaziers, fence installers, conservatory companies,
drainage contractors, joiners, plasterers, painters and decorators.
Ian Livsey, Chairman of TrustMark says: 'The high level of response to
the TrustMark launch and the incredible media interest received to date
demonstrates that there is immense public and industry interest in TrustMark.
Its a long overdue solution to the problem of rogue traders, one
of todays biggest consumer issues.'
The TrustMark website received more than 59,000 visits since launch date
and now has 217 searches conducted per day for a TrustMark-registered
tradesperson - the three most popular trades are currently general builders,
electricians and plumbers.
More than 31,000 leaflets and other items have been downloaded from the
website since January, and all TrustMark approved scheme operators are
reporting a significant increase in public and trade enquiries.
Ian Davis, Director General of the Federation of Master Builders whose
MasterBond scheme is approved by TrustMark, says: 'Consumer traffic to
our find a builder website doubled at launch and is still
running at its highest ever level. Enquiries from builders about joining
the FMB MasterBond scheme are almost 30% ahead of the same time last year.'

Plaslyne
Invests in Future
Telford-based
Plaslyne has invested over quarter of a million pounds in equipment to
increase stockholding, reduce error and speed up order times on its comprehensive
range of products for the plastic stockist trade and window fabricators.
A
new pallet and cantilever racking system and three multi-way loaders improve
stock rotation and give quicker picking times, reducing the risk of delivery
delays, and mean the company is now able to stock a far wider range, giving
more choice to customers.
Doing its bit for the environment, the company has also used the opportunity
to switch away from diesel-powered forklifts to more eco-friendly gas-powered
equivalents.
Plaslyne manufactures and stocks a complete range of plastic and cellular
building products, from roofline applications and rainwater systems to
internal decorative cladding, through a national network of approved stockists
and distributors. It also supplies a wide range of window cills, ancillaries
and cavity closers.
David Drew, Plaslyne's general manager, says: 'The recent investment underlines
our commitment to being the most efficient one-stop-shop for trade customers
and to develop and extend our product range, improving the complete service
we offer.
'Those sundry products can make all the difference between finishing a
job on time, to specification, and delaying completion while a fitter
searches around for a particular colour of cill, trim or rainwater product.
'Even though the current trend is towards product standardisation, Plaslyne
is actually extending its comprehensive range to provide an invaluable
supply route for the industry's ancillary needs.'

on the City's Sowton Industrial Estate.
Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw officially opened the new £1.5m centre and
was able to see some of the services available. The centre, which has

both the trade and retail customers. It also has mirrors in a large range

MP Ben Bradshaw getting involved at the official opening of the Exeter
Glass Centre
Mark

on our successes, expanding our business and reach within the region.
It is an exciting time for us as we are cementing our position and reputation
in the South West's marketplace.
Cornwall Glass and Glazing specialises in all types of flat glass product,
glass toughening and sealed unit manufacture. Recent successes include
gaining BSI kitemark status and becoming the regions leading CGII fire
glass stockist and supplier. Concluding, Mark Mitchell says: The
current trend in the industry seems to be negative with site closures
and reduced production. We are pleased to be bucking the trend and we
are positive and optimistic about the future.

Britannia
Windows Launches New Sculptured Window System
Markets
change and the home improvement market is no exception. Britannia Windows
of Clevedon has been tracking for some time the growth in demand for sculptured
product, searching for its own solution to keep itself and its customers'
one step ahead of the competition.
The
news is the search is now over and Britannia has now launched its own
sculptured window and door system fitted with marine spec anti corrosion
hardware.
Our new 70mm sculptured system has a whole host of quality features,
something that was essential as quality is our hallmark says Hayden
Rushton Managing Director at Britannia.
There's a crisp blue white finish as standard, a single leg knock
in bead and a post co extruded gasket for starters. Then there's the identical
bead to upstand design, equal v notching, and an innovative trim pack
that creates a seamless transition from side frames to our conservatory
roof.
With one bead for all installations a central glazing design that
accepts a 28mm sealed unit perfectly and balanced sightlines (the bead
and upstand being the same height) this is an exceptional product for
those who want to get the most out of retail sales.
It's our belief that sculptured window and door systems have an
important role to play in the future UK market. Chamfered 70mm systems
will still represent the majority of sales but there is a growing sculptured
market, (especially in retail sales) that is too attractive to ignore
concludes Hayden.
Having invested over £500k in new plant and machinery Britannia
is gearing up to make sure it keeps one step ahead. In a market with more
choice than ever, the winners will be those that can offer that choice
from a single source with the least amount of hassle.
Software has been upgraded, staff have been trained, samples have been
manufactured and the initial feedback from existing customers couldn't
be more positive.
As one key customer says We know we've lost sales to sculptured
systems but we weren't prepared to risk changing fabricator as we were
so comfortable with the quality and service Britannia gave us. With the
companys new sculptured system we get the Britannia quality we can
rely on and a sculptured solution that's a real winner and will certainly
win more retail sales.
Norman
& Underwood Seeks Merger and Acquisition Opportunities in Flat Glass
Market
Norman
& Underwood's Glass Products Division is actively seeking acquisition,
joint venture and merger opportunities in the flat glass market place.
The company - which is one of the leading independent glass producers
in the UK - is taking this action in response to ongoing consolidation
in the industry.
Paul Watson, managing director of Norman & Underwood's Glass Products
Division, said: It is well known throughout the industry that the
market is mature and entering a period of consolidation that will produce
both winners and losers. The directors of Norman & Underwood see this
change in the market place as an opportunity to benefit through active
involvement in the consolidation process.'
The Leicester-based privately owned company, which was established in
1825, employs 230 people in total.
It has a Glass Products Division employing 100 in King's Lynn that provides
toughened and fire glass and sealed units and a Contracts Division in
Leicester involved in structural glazing systems, stained glass and metal
roofing and cladding.
Norman & Underwood is particularly keen to talk with businesses whose
flat glass operations are either larger or a similar size to its own.
Their location within the UK is not important as Norman & Underwood
will consider entering into an agreement with companies based in regions
adjacent to King's Lynn or further afield.
Bob Savage, Norman & Underwood group chief executive, added: Within
the industry supply chain we have identified a number of potential acquisition,
joint venture or merger opportunities that we will be actively pursuing
in the coming months. To advise on this process, the board has appointed
Fusion Corporate Finance. Industry surveys and the trade press are
all reporting that glass prices are down by 14 per cent, sales of UPVC
profile are down by 25 per cent and that the windows and doors industry
has 'too many companies chasing too little market.'
Mr Savage added: It's undoubtedly true that in the past three years
the structure of the flat glass industry had gone from high growth, high
margin to zero growth and gross over capacity.
In addition the impact of soaring energy costs, Part L and EN1279
compliance requirements and small batch sizes and short lead times has
increased operating costs at a time when prices and margins are falling.
Add to this financial pressure the need to buy new machinery in
order to be able to process the increasingly wide variety of coated substances
and the resultant big increase in closures, receiverships and bad debts
is hardly surprising.
Unfortunately for the health of the market the closures do not result
in reduced capacity as instead the vast majority of receiverships rise
Phoenix-like from the ashes within 48 hours.
Norman & Underwood recognises the UK's flat glass market is
under intense pressure and has decided to adopt a proactive strategy by
playing an active part in this necessary process of consolidation.

Newstead
Starts 2006 on a High
While
the industry continues to offer mixed reports, but on the whole is struggling,
Newstead is on the up achieving a 12% increase in sales year on year for
February. I am delighted with the figures, comments Adrian
Locker, Managing Director. And we hope to continue this trend in
the coming months. Trading figures for Newstead have been good in a market
that is highly competitive and our growth is due to new customers signing
up and our existing customers who are also continuing to grow.

PVC-U windows, doors and conservatories nationwide to trade and commercial
customers. Newstead fabricates Synseal Shield and has now launched the

of the art manufacturing equipment to boost capacity to 2,000 windows
and ensure fast, trouble free service. Newstead has recently added a profile
bending workshop to its factory to produce arched frames in-house, including
a £60,000 window preparation machine from Universal Arches. Sealed
units are made onsite and Newstead has its own decorative glass studio.
Newstead's installer support package, Selling Made Easy (SME), goes well
beyond traditional trade fabricator schemes. It includes sharing the cost
of remakes so installers don't have to worry about broken glass or survey
errors; a rapid turnaround for urgent jobs; a mobile service engineer;
marketing support (including the consumer Europa brand); frame packaging
and corner weld protection ensure products are kept in mint condition;
extended 10 year guarantees on white and foiled profiles with 10 years
on glass units and 5 years on fittings; a seven day collection/delivery
promise (10 days with glass) and fast, accurate quotations - 95% within
4 hours.
Finalist for the glazing industry's G05 Fabricator of the Year Award,
Newstead is now one of just 16 fabricators in the country to achieve the
police backed Secured by Design (SBD) standard on both windows and doors.
With a turnover of £7m Newstead covers 79,000ft2 over four sites
in Staffordshire.

Plastmo
fabricator, Countryside Windows says that it has been able to consistently

This newly renovated site is based at one of Gloucestershire's oldest

modules covering Marketing, Sales, Customer Care and Business Planning.
Some of these will be offered regionally in order to accommodate the hectic
schedules of FrameXpress customers.

Chinese
Takeaway for Securistyle
Chinese
imports are commonplace in the British window industry but one UK manufacturer
has turned the tables and is taking the Chinese market by storm.
Securistyle is a UK window hardware manufacturer and its reputation is
spreading to the Far East. Increased business has led to the company
translating its corporate brochure and product guide into Chinese.
Focusing on the companys commitment to product innovation and development,
investment in people and new products, the brochure gives customers a
flavour of the investment Securistyle is making now and in the future
and the ethos behind this approach. The firm is half way through
a five-year £5 million product development programme, which has
seen 80% of its product range enhanced to accommodate changes to British
and European legislation.
The international and UK case studies included within the brochure
The Main Tower, Frankfurt, Germany, Ministry of Education, Singapore and
Aldwyck Housing Association, London reflect Securistyles
position in the commercial, new build and social housing markets.

brochure has been designed to educate our customers, both here and abroad,
on the investments we are making and what we are working towards. As
market leaders, our product range is second to none and we continue to

Radway
Appointed to LHC U7 Programme
National
fenestration contractor, Radway Door and Windows Limited, a member of
the Radway Group, has announced that for the fourth consecutive programme,
it has successfully been appointed to the LHC approved list, securing
its position as one of the longest-standing PVC-U fenestration contractors
on the arrangement.
The LHC U7 programme commenced on 1st May 2006, when Radway, with 12 years
LHC experience, provides its full suite of window and door products manufactured
exclusively from L.B. Plastics Sheerframe. For over 10 years now,
Sheerframe has featured in the LHC approved portfolio with its reversibles,
pivots and curtain walling ranges, but now, through Radway, has gained
approval for its casement and tilt before turn products also.
Success onto the U7 arrangement was achieved following the rigorous assessment
of Radway, its operating systems and procedures and the most extensive
performance testing, where Sheerframe products exceeded the most exacting
weather performance requirements. The windows and doors proved effective
under wind pressures of over 3600 pascals, which is equivalent to the
highest gust of wind ever recorded in the British Isles. The highest gust
ever recorded in the British Isles was on the meteorological station at
the top of the Cairngorm, 3,700 ft above sea level. On 20th March 1986,
winds reached 173 mph, equivalent to the 3600 pascal wind load applied
to the Sheerframe windows under test at BSI.

Appointed
to the LHC U7 programme, (Front to back) Radway Sales and Marketing Director
John Park-Davies with his colleague Harpal Singh, Radway Quality and Technical
Manager, and David Strang, Product Director of Sheerframe systems company
L.B. Plastics.
John
Park-Davies, Sales and Marketing Director at Radway comments,
'The LHC is an important integral part of Radways business plan
and Radway is delighted to be appointed onto the U7 arrangement. The LHC
provides the highest level of service and quality of products nationwide
and Radway is delighted to continue this association. We have been manufacturing
Sheerframe products for 15 years now and our long term commitment will
continue.'
David Strang, Sheerframe Product Director adds,
'It is excellent news that Sheerframe windows continue to be available
under LHC arrangements, via Radway, with whom we have established a hugely
successful partnership over the years. By developing a suite of high performance,
organically stabilised windows, we have effectively future-proofed fenestration
for responsible window buyers in the public sector.'
A member of the Radway Group, Radway Door and Windows Limited successfully
completes long-term large-scale window and door renewal programmes nationwide.
The company is 100% dedicated to the Public Sector, operating in Social
Housing, Education, Health and MOD sectors. Appointment to the U7 arrangement
is another great achievement for Radway, which was voted Contractor of
the Year 2005 at the Housing Excellence Awards and was presented with
the first ever Key Commercial Partner certificate by L.B. Plastics
parent company, the international Litchfield Group of Companies, at last
years Institute of Housing Conference in Harrogate.
LHC has been managing procurement programmes for Public Sector projects
for almost 40 years. It sets up and manages a supply chain network of
building product manufacturers and installers, selected on their ability
to offer high quality products to high levels of customer service at competitive
prices.
Today, with the intense focus on procurement and technical efficiencies,
demand for LHC services is stronger than ever. Over 250 Registered Social
Landlords, Local Authorities and Arms Length Management Organisations
rely on LHC procure expertise.
Global
Warming Effect on PVC Products Increasing
Freefoam's
research into the colour stability of PVC products when exposed to increased
UV levels and extreme conditions, and a review of the current levels to
which roofline products are exposed in the UK and Ireland, gives food
for thought. Updated data from the National Radiological Protection Division
of the Health Protection Agency shows that the worrying trend of increasing
UV radiation levels has continued in 2005.
The
implications of this trend are significant for all those involved with
exterior PVC products - extruders, stockists, installers, raw material
suppliers and homeowners too.
Just as our skin needs protection if exposed over long periods to intense
heat and UV sunlight, so too does PVC which has what is referred to as
a 'tipping point' of UV exposure beyond which fading is rapidly accelerated.
Back in the early 1990s the consensus was that 4 parts TiO2 (Titanium
Dioxide) per hundred was adequate for UV protection of white products
based on average regional UV levels. But the graph shows annual figures
for the area between Oxford & London and clearly indicates a rising
trend in UV levels over the past ten years.
Freefoam's products have never been at risk from this trend,
Says Tony Walsh, Freefoam Managing Director. Unlike a lot of our
competitors, we have been supplying markets in southern France for some
time, and had added the necessary 5-6 parts per hundred to all our fascia
products for operational simplicity, whether they ended up in France,
the UK or Ireland.
This updated data reconfirms that Global Warming is a threat which
we need to protect our products against. As manufacturers, we all have
a duty to ensure the products we make last longer than the guarantees
that back them.

Guild
is the Standard Bearer
Major
changes in the standards covering architectural ironmongery are now coming
into force and The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers is urging specifiers
to seek the guidance of a qualified Architectural Ironmonger to offer
specialist advice on the changes. The Guild, the only UK organisation
to operate an accredited training and CPD programme for architectural
ironmongers, has also produced a Technical Update outlining the most salient
features of the new suite of standards.
Most of the British standards associated with architectural ironmongery
- including door closers, lock cylinders, lever handles and knobs, door
and window bolts, padlocks and single axis hinges - have now been harmonised
with European standards to form joint BS EN documents.
Products which comply with these new standards will carry coded classification
information to indicate their key performance characteristics on their
packaging, literature or on the product itself. These code numbers indicate
that the product has been tested for several key operational criteria
including category of use, durability, door mass, fire behaviour, safety,
and corrosion resistance.
'The products covered by these new European standards are vital elements
in any project's security, safety and fire integrity and it is vital that
specifiers select the correct products for their particular application,'
comments Graham Shirville, of the Guild's Technical Committee.
'Architectural ironmongers qualified under the Guild's Registered AI scheme
will be best placed to advise architects about the new standards since
they will have undergone and extensive CPD programme, ensuring their knowledge
is current and relevant.'
Specifiers can obtain a copy of the Guild's informative Technical Update
by phoning 020 7790 3431 or they can download a copy at http://www.gai.org.uk.
The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers represents the majority of architectural
ironmongers in the UK as well as the leading manufacturers of architectural
ironmongery. The Guild also administers the benchmark qualifications for
professional architectural ironmongers and is dedicated to raising standards
and encouraging best practice in all aspects of the sector.
FMB
Launches Search for Britain's Best Apprentice
TV
tycoon Sir Alan Sugar isn't the only person on the hunt for an apprentice;
the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is looking for the best young
talent in the construction industry, as it launches its search for the
Apprentice of the Year 2006.
The FMB wants apprentices who've been hired, not fired, for their outstanding
ability and 'can do' attitude. Unlike the TV series, it's not down to
apprentices to blow their own trumpets - nominations can only be made
by their employer, customer, tutor, or by a member of the CITB-ConstructionSkills
regional team.
The competition is run in conjunction with the FMB's Master Builder of
the Year Awards and is open to any UK apprentice in the construction industry,
not just FMB members. This year the FMB is giving away a top prize of
£1,000 to the winner.
'We at the FMB want to put talented young people from the construction
industry in the spotlight', says Ian Davis, director general of the FMB.
'The valuable contributions made by apprentices are often overlooked and
this award recognises those who deserve it. It also helps promote a positive
image in an industry threatened with skills shortages and encourages young
people to consider a career in one of the construction trades.'
CITB-ConstructionSkills and Screwfix Direct sponsor the Apprentice of
the Year category. Entries do not have to be the biggest or most complicated
projects; they just need to show the apprentice has used a high level
of skill in their chosen trade.
Frazer Clement, business services director at CITB-ConstructionSkills,
says: 'As an industry currently seeking over 80,000 new recruits a year,
it is vital that we take steps to encourage quality young people to take
up careers in construction and show them the range of amazing jobs on
offer. We are delighted to be supporting the Apprentice of the Year award
to acknowledge outstanding apprentices and safeguard the future of the
industry.'
Simon O'Mahony, head of marketing at Screwfix Direct, says 'As a company
that has been supplying the trades for over 25 years, we believe it is
important to develop and keep the next generation of tradespeople motivated
to work within the industry, and are proud to be associated with the Apprentice
of the Year award.'
Last year saw some of the highest standard of entries ever before seen
in the competition. Nineteen-year-old Christopher Ware, from Taunton,
was chosen from hundreds of nominations for his good practical skills
and ability to complete work on his own during the refurbishment of a
Grade II listed building to win the 'Apprentice of the Year 2005'.
CITB-ConstructionSkills representative Dawn Rattenbury, who followed Christopher
through his apprenticeship said: 'Chris consistently showed great politeness,
good manners and a positive attitude towards his training, always being
keen to learn and improve.'
So whether you are a talented apprentice or you run a building firm that
prides itself on training new recruits, you can find more details and
download an entry form at http://www.fmb.org.uk
or by calling 08000 152 522. The closing date for entries is 31st July
2006 and the winners will be presented with their awards by Sarah Beeny,
presenter of Channel 4's Property Ladder on November 9th 2006.
Master Builder of the Year 2006 is organised by the Federation of Master
Builders in association with Nissan Motor (GB) Ltd, and sponsored by American
Express, Aon Ltd, B & CE Benefit Schemes, British Gypsum, CITB-ConstructionSkills,
Energy Saving Trust, Envirowise, HBXL, Hewden, Hilti, Homebuilding and
Renovating, K2 Conservatory Roof Systems, LABC, Paramount Group of Hotels,
Professional Builder magazine, Sage Construction, Screwfix Direct, Travis
Perkins, and Master Builder magazine.
Trelleborg
Group - Strong Growth During the First Quarter
Growth
in the Trelleborg Group was strong during the first quarter. Net sales
in continuing operations rose by 21 percent to SEK 6,807 M (5,642), driven
both by organic growth (8,5 percent) and by acquisitions. Sales were affected
favourably by the greater number of working days during the first quarter
of 2006 compared with the year-earlier period.
Net profit for the Groups continuing operations, excluding restructuring
costs and impairment, rose to SEK 280 M (241).
Increased focus on selected segments, combined with price increases and
cost savings, largely offset increased costs for raw materials.
The order and delivery situation in most of the Groups units remains
favourable. The oil/gas and aerospace segments are examples of areas with
a particularly favourable order backlog.
'Growth is expected to remain favourable in most of our principal markets'
says Peter Nilsson, President and CEO.
Outlook
The outlook for the first half of 2006 remains unchanged, with market
growth in the Groups seven principal markets expected to be in line
with the second half of 2005. A high level of demand for natural rubber
and continued high oil prices affecting the pricing scenario for certain
polymer raw materials is expected to result in continued cost pressure
during the second quarter of 2006.

Linde
Makes a Dynamic Start to the New Fiscal Year
The
technology group Linde has achieved significant increases in sales and
operating profit (EBIT) in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2006 and
confirmed its forecast for the whole year. 'We have taken advantage of
the good economic environment and have begun the new fiscal year at full
pelt' said Professor Wolfgang Reitzle, President of the Executive Board
of Linde AG. 'We have established an extremely stable base for the continuing
success of our business in all areas and we are approaching the challenges
ahead with a healthy dose of optimism. We confirm our previous forecast
for the full year 2006 - we expect Group sales and earnings to exceed
the figures for the prior year.'
Sales up 14.0 percent to 2.415 billion euro
36.4 percent improvement in operating profit to 225 million euro
50.6 percent rise in net income to 134 million euro
Operating cash flow increased by 77 million euro to 214 million
euro
Forecast for 2006 confirmed: Further increase in sales and earnings
expected
On a comparable basis, Group sales rose 14.0 percent to 2.415 billion
euro (2005: 2.118 billion euro). While sales outside Germany increased
by 14.8 percent to 1.938 billion euro (2005: 1.688 billion euro), sales
within Germany saw a 10.9 percent increase to 477 million euro (2005:
430 million euro). Incoming orders of 2.533 billion euro were also higher,
7.9 percent above those for the same period in 2005.
Based on comparable prior year figures, Linde's earnings also continued
to show a significant improvement. In the first three months of the year,
Group EBIT rose 36.4 percent to 225 million euro (2005: 165 million euro)
and earnings before taxes on income (EBT) increased by 48.6 percent to
208 million euro (2005: 140 million euro). Operating cash flow increased
by 77 million euro to 214 million euro. Net income after minority interests
of 134 million euro was 50.6 percent higher than the figure in 2005 of
89 million euro. There was a corresponding rise in earnings per share
at the end of March to 1.12 euro (2005: 0.75 euro).
All business segments contributed to this very good overall start to fiscal
2006, with each segment achieving a disproportionate increase in earning
power.
In the Material Handling business segment, Linde has successfully pursued
its income-oriented growth course based on the GO (Growth and Operational
Excellence) optimisation programme and has performed exceptionally well
in the first quarter. Sales increased significantly by 19.6 percent to
922 million euro (2005: 771 million euro) and incoming orders at the end
of March of 960 million euro were well above the comparative figure in
2005 of 854 million euro. Earnings trends were even more positive. EBIT
rose to 47 million euro (2005: 26 million euro), which represents an improvement
of 80.8 percent.
Linde also benefited from a favourable market environment. Especially
in the important market of Western Europe, demand for industrial trucks
increased at a surprisingly high rate of 12 percent in the first quarter
of 2006. The Eastern European region again generated the highest rate
of growth at the beginning of the year. The total market there increased
by 46 percent compared with the same period in the previous year.
It is anticipated that there will be further robust growth in the global
market for industrial trucks during the rest of the current fiscal year,
with a disproportionate increase in demand in Eastern Europe in particular.
In North America and Asia too, the rate of growth is expected to accelerate
slightly in the course of 2006.
Given this situation, Linde again expects an increase in sales in the
Material Handling business segment for the full fiscal year 2006 and a
significant improvement in earnings as a result of the GO programme.

This event is not for the faint hearted (not least because there is the
prospect of meeting a number of trade press hacks there). Islands is full
of swearing of a most liberal kind. However, it is also, for those with
a taste for such things, quite funny. Tickets would be £3 but anyone
who emails islands@brind.co.uk
can have two tickets for free (so long as they promise to actually turn
up).
AND
FINALLY...
Shield
Windows Saved my Life says Arson Attack Victim
Mrs
Ridley of Stanley, County Durham says her Shield windows saved her life.
The alleged arson attack took place when a pile of rubbish was set alight
between Mrs Ridley and her neighbour's front doors. The fire spread rapidly.
Image Windows, which installed the windows, was called to the scene. Dennis
Davison, Image Windows' Managing Director, arrived when the frames were
still hot from the fire. He explains: We installed Mrs Ridley's
windows two years ago and when she called we went straight round not knowing
what to expect. But the windows were barely touched inside, and the smoke
had not come through into the house.

The
police, fire service and insurance company were amazed how well Mrs Ridley's
windows had stood up to the intense heat.
Mrs Ridley said she wouldn't have her windows replaced by any other
company, and she wouldn't accept any other quotes. She told me that her
windows saved her life, and she wasn't going to settle for anything less,
adds Dennis.
We have bent over backwards to make it as easy as possible for Mrs
Ridley. The new windows will be replaced on Tuesday - we were trying to
install them before the bank holiday weekend. We have already replaced
all the outside plumbing and roofline.
The situation could have been a lot worse according to the police.
The fire was dangerously close to a gas main and they were minutes away
from evacuating the whole street.
You don't really expect to see damage like this first hand. I know
all the products are tested to a certain level of fire resistance, but
it doesn't really mean anything until you see it for yourself. I can't
believe how well the Shield system held up under the heat, but I'm very
glad it did.
