Interbuild 2004 Dispels the Myths

The true value of Interbuild was highlighted last week when the many sections of the building and construction industry joined forces at the NEC. Just short of 50,000* visitors attended the UK's premier construction event and it is predicted they will have generated business worth millions of pounds for the 1,600 exhibitors.

Said Event Director Steve Webb: 'Our aim was to celebrate the 50th Interbuild in style and I am delighted to say we achieved that.

'I am particularly pleased that the figures have dispelled a few myths about Interbuild. There has been a lot of negative talk about the Show but the critics have been answered in no uncertain terms.

'Everything we have done from changing the Show dates to using the new halls at the NEC and introducing new feature areas has been successful.

'All the companies that entered the New Product Awards have benefited - regardless of whether or not they won - and it was an excellent decision to give innovation the prominence it deserves.

'Our marketing initiative worked very well and exhibitors played a huge part in ensuring the event was successful by giving it their full support.

'There were a lot of very happy exhibitors - and visitors - and it was an absolute pleasure as Event Director to walk around the Show and have people shake my hand and congratulate us on helping to generate business.

'This was the 50th Interbuild and based on the reaction over the past five days, this Show will still be around 100 years from now.'

Attendances increased on a daily basis from Sunday through to Wednesday and although Thursday is traditionally a quieter day, it did not follow the normal trend this year.

Interbuild last week became wholly owned by Emap Construct after it bought out Montgomery's 50 per cent share.

The Show dates for the next Interbuild in 2006 will be April 23-27.

Andersen launches Woodwright™ Window Range

Andersen, the world’s largest wood window manufacturer, launched a new range of windows at Interbuild 2004. On display for the first time, was the pioneering new Woodwright™ sliding sash window, the first of a new generation of made-to-measure windows to use Fibrex™ - a completely new type of composite material made from a patented blend of reclaimed pine wood fibre bonded with a specially formulated thermoplastic polymer.

With its unique properties, Fibrex™ not only delivers a strength, rigidity, and thermal performance equal to wood, and a stability superior to wood, but it even has the texture and appearance of natural wood. The polymer coated wood fibre is also resistant to flaking, blistering, peeling, cracking and corrosion so that, like PVC-u, there is no need for painting.

Andersen has used this pioneering technology to create a high performance window with the texture, warmth and traditional narrow profiles of a classic 'solid wood'box sash.

The difference is in every detail: Fibrex™ sashes available in both equal and cottage styles, which tilt inwards for safe and easy cleaning; mortise and tendon-styled joints instead of unsightly welded corners; traditional chamfered check rails; a range of high definition external glazing bar options; and a choice of pine, oak, maple and pre-finished white interior finishes, all adding to the authentic appeal.

Exterior colours include a choice of: white, Sandtone (a neutral beige), Terratone™ (an earth colour) and forest green to complement the décor, design, or landscape.

'The Woodwright™ with Fibrex™ is a significant breakthrough in window technology and design, which will allow house builders to offer their customers high performance, low maintenance products, with the design flexibility and careful detailing associated with traditional wood windows,” said Jim Lawrie, Chief Executive of Black Millwork, distributor for Andersen Windows in the UK and Ireland.

With the range available in made-to-measure as well as 99 standard sizes, Woodwright™ is ideal for both new build and refurbishment projects.

As with all Andersen windows and patio doors, the Woodwight™ comes with soft coat low E, argon filled double glazing, as standard, and is fully compliant with Part L of the Building Regulations. Additional glazing options include high performance, reinforced and tinted sun glass.

The complete range of Andersen Windows and Patio Doors is available in the UK and Ireland from Black Millwork, Andersen House, Dallow Street, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 2PQ.

Manse: the Master of Security at lnterbuild

Manse Masterdor Ltd, the bespoke door manufacturer, showed visitors to lnterbuild why Masterdor is considered to be one of the most secure door-sets on the market. The Masterdor range of bespoke door-sets guarantees specifiers a product range that is totally security conscious without compromising on choice of colour and style.

Manse exhibited the new Masterdor double door, which has been witness tested for Secued by Design. The double door is the latest addition to the company's comprehensive Secured by Design range.

Taking pride of place at the exhibition was the standard Masterdor door-set, which has recently become the first door-set to be approved by Sold Secure, an independent scheme dedicated to reducing the risk of crime by the assessment of security products, The scheme is administered by the Master Locksmiths Association and has close ties with a number of police constabularies and insurers who provide regular information regarding the methods of theft and the tools utilised by criminals. This allows Sold Secure to assess security products in the light of the risk they are likely to encounter when in use.

High performance Masterdors are PAS23/24 accredited and Part L compliant. The Stand also featured Sheerframe windows, doors and conservatory systems, Hometrim cellular building products and Sheerline ramps, decks and verandas.

Groupco Meets the Right People

For hardware distributor Groupco and specialist manufacturer Peder Nielsen, Interbuild offered the ideal showcase to present a complete window hardware solution for architects and specifiers.

The transparent displays were designed to demonstrate the specific features and benefits of the PN UNI and Combi 500 Systems for PVCu, aluminium, composite and timber profiles.

These not only generated considerable interest from the company’s traditional customer base but also gave Groupco and PN the opportunity to talk to people from outside their normal area of operation.

‘The stand attracted a steady flow of visitors each day and we met people from all different fields,’ commented Managing Director Richard Duncan. ‘For example specialist consultants dealing with industry standards who we now hope to work with in the future.’

‘It was not a busy-busy show, but we saw the right people and they were asking the right questions,’ adds Richard. ‘It was a worthwhile exhibition for us, with an interesting mix of visitors and a good number of quality leads.’

Hometrim Launch Three New Products at lnterbuild 2004

Three new additions to the Hometrim PVCu roofline and cladding range were unveiled at this year's Interbuild. A new hollow soffit has been added to the already extensive range of Hometrim ventilated soffits. Hometrim soffits range from 150mm to 400mm in width and are available in white as well as a variety of woodgrain finishes. The new product is available in a 300mm width and has been designed for fast, economy applications.

The range of Ogee decorative skirtings and architraves has also been added to, with the introduction of two 6-inch shaped skirtings, available in a 12mm thick version and a Victorian style 18mm thick version. The new skirtings are suitable for use in conservatories to accommodate wiring, as well as in newbuild and general refurbishment projects where they bring distinctive additional character.

An entire range of traditional square edged thick fascia boards has also been added, complementing the existing range of Ogee edged 18mm boards. The new boards come in a full set of widths from 150mm to 400mm and are suitable for all applications.

Visitors to the Hometrim stand can see the wide range of Hometrim woodgrain finishes, including light oak, rosewood and mahogany to complement finishes available on Sheerframe window systems.

Hometrim will share one of the largest stands in Hall 6 with three other Litchfield Group product ranges - Sheerframe window systems, Sheerline decking and ramp systems and manufacturers of timber bladed door-sets, Manse Masterdor Itd. This is the first year that all four ranges have been exhibited on the same stand, and visitors should benefit from easy reference to a series of complementary products.

Interbuild Brings Bigger Orders for Windowlink

Interbuild provided another opportunity for software supplier, Windowlink, to talk face to face to many existing and potential customers. As always, the stand was set up to demonstrate on-screen the updates and benefits of its Vector conservatory and Focus window/door sales presentation packages.

Managing Director Giles Hayhurst says that there were a number of differences between Interbuild and Glassex. ‘The quality of visitor at Interbuild was every bit as good as at Glassex, if not better. Overall there may have been fewer people, but those who came on the Sunday despite the hot weather were there for a serious reason.’

While there was less actual business done on the stand, Giles is confident that this will follow. ‘The enquiries were for much bigger set ups with larger organisations looking for complete solutions. We also had significant interest from several notable companies exhibiting at the show itself.

‘We were especially pleased to talk to people who, having opted in the past for other solutions which then did not fulfil their expectations, had now specifically come to see the advantages that our software can offer,’ he continued. ‘It was definitely worth us being there.’

Windowlink also ran a Prize Draw to win a mini petrol scooter which proved very popular with visitors from all trades entering (pictured left with
Giles).

Elumatec Reveals its Soft Side at Interbuild 2004

Door, window and curtain walling machinery manufacturer Elumatec used Interbuild 2004 to introduce a number of software innovations designed to make the manufacturing process quicker and easier. The company also demonstrated a range of machining centres for aluminium fabrication.

‘Elumatec’s reputation for superb design and engineering is proven by the SBZ140 (pictured), 130 and 122 series of machining centres for processing aluminium and steel sections. All offer precise clamping of the profile whilst all routing, drilling and tapping operations are carried out fully automatically, preventing scratching to the surface of the section. Another useful and time saving feature is the ability for the operator to feed and clamp a second profile whilst the first is being processed (standard feature over 6.2 m working length).’ says the company.

The SBZ122, 130 and 140 models offer 2, 3 and 4 axis processing respectively, enabling aluminium fabricators to choose the most appropriate machine for their exact needs. Developed for the machining of large aluminium and steel sections, such as for curtain walling, glazed roofing and other commercial applications, the SBZ 130 will automatically mill, route, drill and tap sections up to 11.5 metres long with total accuracy. Machining is performed on three faces and the ends of sections, without any need for manual handling. The SBZ 140 offers 4 axis processing of heavy duty profiles for any application, controlled by a PC operating on Windows NT. Versatility is extended by the milling head being able to process profiles infinitely at any position between 0° and 180° with all available tools. This means that the use of tools with special angled heads is unnecessary.

Also demonstrated at Interbuild was the Elumatec DG244 Double Mitre Saw. Concentrating on flexibility, safety and ease of operation, the machine is capable of series production as well as special applications. The universal pivoting and tilting of the two saw heads allows for the cutting of high and wide profiles, or of several profiles together, often without the aid of support blocks.

However, the importance of using the right software for specific machining processes was also highlighted on the Elumatec stand. All the machining centres on the stand were linked to Elusoft®, Elumatec’s own 3D profile processing software. This package was developed by a specialist Elumatec division dedicated to the development of programmes that provide an interface between construction CAD-produced drawings and calculations, and glazing production systems.

In addition, Elumatec was joined on its Interbuild stand by C-Mol, a German based company offering integrated software solutions specifically for metal window, door and curtain walling construction. C-Mol offers tailored modules rather than a ‘package solution’, which can often leave manufacturers with extraneous software that does not apply to their circumstances.

Lindman Offers Windows and Doors in New Material

Lindman was the only company at lnterbuild to offer both window and door systems manufactured from fibre reinforced polymer (FRP), the building material of the future according to BRE, and the new alternative to PVCu, aluminium and timber.

Since its first introduction to the British market at lnterbuild in 2002, Lindman Fenestration's new and revolutionary Pultec has easily undertaken and passed all relevant British Standards, with performance results substantially better than PVCu and aluminium.

New from Lindman Doors, and believed to be an industry 'first', is a remote control system for opening and locking domestic front doors. Available on any of the Lindman ranges of high performance, low maintenance doorsets, it comprises an electrically motorised lock which operates on a programmable key fob in the same way as a car key.

Pultec window profile is made from a similar FRP thermosetting composite to Lindman's well established, market leading Fibre-Craft doors, although produced in a different way using a state-of-the-art thin wall pultrusion process. Both products meet all relevant British standards and rate highly for security, strength, dimensional stability, thermal insulation, weather resistance and minimal environmental impact. They are guaranteed for a minimum of 20 years with a life expectancy exceeding 50 years.

Lindman Fenestration, the new company set up alongside the well established Lindman Doors, has been most encouraged by the high level of interest in Pultec. As well as recognising the performance benefits, architects and specifiers have seen many exciting design possibilities arising from Pultec's thin wall profile, particularly for larger window areas and curtain walling in both domestic and commercial applications.

Chris Dixon, Lindman's managing director (pictured with the new remote control door), comments: 'From our pioneering experience with our Fibre-Craft doors, we know it can be a long term project to introduce a revolutionary new product such as our window system. However, the orders we have already received have far exceeded our expectations at this stage of our development. The barometer is clearly set 'Fair'.

Kestrel Accord - a new Generation of Window Boards

lnterbuild 2004 marked the official UK exhibition debut of a new window board from Kestrel Building Products - a division of HW Plastics. Kestrel Accord products are manufactured from a unique formulation of PVC and wood, known as ROOT-EX, which has been developed using the technology of FibrexTM (a trademark of the Andersen Corporation of The USA). The resulting composite combines the durability and workability of PVC with the dimensional stability and rigidity of wood.

Due to the hybrid nature of their composition, Kestrel Accord cills offer a combination of properties that will enable installers to add value to installations. Its low expansion rate (half that of PVC-U/UE) means that butt joints, more usually associated with using wood, can be employed and the need for joint-capping can be eliminated.

Kestrel Accord window boards are available in in 5-metre lengths, which also reduces the number of joints needed in a given installation. The inherent stiffness of the new composite means that its thickness can be greatly reduced when compared with an equivalent thickness of PVC, allowing slim installations particularly important when the material is to be used in an over capping application.

With little warp-age, no knots or raised grain, Kestrel Accord does not need the same preparation as an all-wood cill and in-service maintenance is minimal. Kestrel Accord is also a more environmentally friendly material than some alternatives because it does not contain formaldehyde and the wood fibre used in its composition is from renewable sources.

Sarah Louise Constable, marketing development manager with Kestrel explains, 'Accord adds an exciting new material to our existing product portfolio. The new cill combines the practical benefits associated with both PVC and wood in a unique and versatile composite, which we believe, will give our customers a competitive edge. It can be sawn, nailed, drilled and screwed like wood or welded like PVC with standard equipment that installers already use, thus eliminating the need to learn new fixing techniques and to purchase new tools'.

Launched initially in scratch-resistant foil white, natural finish, and woodgrain foil Kestrel Accord window boards will be available ex-stock from Kestrel's national network of distributors.

First Approved Installer of K2/FMB Scheme Announced

Conservatory roofing system company, K2, has announced West Country Windows as the first fully audited Approved lnstaller to be accepted onto its FMB backed scheme. As a condition of joining, Approved lnstallers must meet the stringent conditions of FMB membership as a Warranted Builder.

The Yeovil-based company has a 25-year track record in the conservatory industry and has used K2 products for several years. As a leading installer in the South West, with three show sites, West Country Windows was keen to be involved in the scheme and contacted K2 to begin the extensive auditing process as soon as it became aware of the initiative.

Explains Ken Ashplant from West Country Windows: 'As soon as we knew about the scheme we wanted to sign up for it. K2 produces an excellent system and the association with the FMB will not only give our customers additional peace of mind but will differentiate West Country Windows from our competitors. We have always been confident in the standard of installation integrity and customer service we offer but the audit process we went through to enable us to join the scheme was very thorough. However, we passed with flying colours and are delighted to be the first Approved lnstaller to join the K2/FMB scheme'.

Two other Installers, Associated Windows in Bristol and Regal Home Maker in Swindon are currently undergoing the final checks that will give them K2 Approved lnstaller status. A further ten companies are in the process of being audited with a further list of companies waiting for the audit process to begin.

Comments lain Mclnnes, Marketing Director of K2: 'From the very beginning we have had a clear focus on making the K2 Approved lnstaller Scheme credible and of value both to consumers and to the installers themselves. As a result there is an auditing process that takes 4-6 weeks to ensure that the installers joining the scheme meet the criteria for FMB membership, agree to uphold their Code of Conduct and become excellent ambassadors for the conservatory industry. We are delighted to have welcomed West Country Windows to the scheme and look forward to announcing further K2 Approved lnstallers in the near future.

As an qpproved Installer, West Country Windows will now be able to display the K2 Approved lnstaller Scheme logo and will provide a 10-year insurance backed warranty with every installation. The company will also have access to a range of services from the FMB and marketing materials from K2.

Comments Robin Hood-Leeder, FMB's Director of Membership Services: 'The initial response to the scheme has been very impressive and is testimony to K2's reputation within the conservatory industry. We believe that this scheme will set the standard for the home improvement sector and we will support K2 as they work with installers to help them fulfill the stringent criteria for membership.

Secure Observation from Vistamatic

The latest range of Vistamatic vision panels were on display at lnterbuild. Designed for areas where there is a need for observation before entering or leaving a room, or where inspection without disturbance is at a premium, the panels can be installed in standard doors and walls and adapted to suit specific locations such as hospitals, police stations, banks, post offices and research establishments.

Says Vistamatic Director, John Nerden: 'Being such a versatile product, Vistamatic vision panels can be used in a wide range of environments; for instance, they are perfect as a first line of defence in high-risk areas such as mental health institutions, as Vistamatic can incorporate within their design a unique anti-ligature knurled knob. The panels can be manufactured using a range of glasses, including safety glass, fire resistant glass, lead glass and even bullet resistant glass, to meet individual requirements.'

By combining a clear and an opaque window in a one-piece unit, the adaptable panels, which come in a wide variety of designs and glazing materials, provide a safe and practical solution to any environment where discreet surveillance is desirable. This provides a practical solution for any environment where opening of doors should be kept to a minimum, or where it would be an advantage to see before physically entering or leaving a room. The technical principle of the vision panel is simple: three layers of glass sheet, all with opaque horizontal bands, are placed on top of each other within the panel frame. When the centre sheet, which is designed to move freely, is lifted via a simple hand - or even elbow - operated lever mechanism, the view through the vision panel is obscured.

Cost effective, stylish and modern looking, standard panels are available in two sizes: 404mm x 404mm, or as a 250mm x 800mm slimline version, blending unobtrusively into any environment and situation. Customised operating handles can be fitted on both sides, on one side only, or with a key restricted operating system for added security and safety.

Meeting British Standards BS EN ISO 9002: 1994, as well as BS 6206 for Tempered Safety Glass Class 'A', specialist vision panels can be made with x-ray or laser protection, as well as incorporating personalised pictograms of company logos or safety signs. Vistamatic can also work with architects and designers to create bespoke sizes and specifications.

Therma-Tru Rolls out Fibreglass Door Range

Visitors to Therma-Tru's stand were among the first in the UK to see a number of new product innovations in the Therma-Tru fibreglass door range. Guardoor is the latest new high specification entry door which complies with all relevant fire and security standards. Also on show were new trimmable options on some of Therma-Tru's most popular doors, a new range of decorative giass, and two new styles of the best-selling ClassioCraft door, Mahogany and Rustic.

The new Guardoor from Therma-Tru is suitable for new build and refurbishment projects where both security and fire resistance are prime considerations. It achieves both a 30-minute fire rating to comply with BS 476 Part 22-1987, and the stringent requirements of PAS 23 (Part 1: 1999) and PAS 24 (Part 1: 1999) for assessing the operational and security requirements of external door assemblies.

Intumescent seals in all glazing assemblies and the outer frame also enhance Guardoor's Fire resistance. A certified fire-rated door closer, an additional lock block at the hinge stile, Euro-groove mounted multipoint locking system and individual steel lock keeps complete the security picture.

On view for the first tilne in the UK were two new additions to the best-selling Classic-Craft range of doors. The Classic-Craft Mahogany collection recreates the beauty of mahogany without compromising performance, or the environment, while the new Rustic doors have a handcrafted quality with echoes of Mediterranean architecture.

Therma-Tru also displayed its new range of handcrafted, triple glazed decorative glass sealed units for doors. The four leaded light patterns - Cambridge, Crystalline, Concorde and Provincial - have been chosen to enhance the current Therma-Tru door offering with a style to suit all tastes and decors. The glass is leaded and soldered by hand and then the decorative panel is sealed and sandwiched between two sheets of tempered glass, offering exceptional durability and energy efficiency.

New World Development’s Composite Door Launched at Interbuild

Apeer, a new GRP composite doorset with patent pending features, has been launched by New World Developments, Ireland’s leading PVCu door panel manufacturer. With a grain as lifelike and warm as timber and all the thermal, durable and security advantages of modern materials, Apeer is a door that will look good, feel warm and perform to the most stringent standards.

Visitors were able to test and touch examples of Apeer’s eight styles, which are manufactured with a matching integral framing unit for perfect fit and aesthetic appeal. Hand-crafted at several stages, all Apeer glazed doors include the patent pending, triple-glazed glass unit and original glass designs by the in-house team. The distinctive moulding or ‘pip’ detail, unique to Apeer, offers a discriminating, traditional look and feel.

New World Developments has used its experienced research, production and technical skills to design the visual appeal of timber grains, but the rough and tumble demands of today’s urban environment provided a tough durability test for Apeer’s designers. Reinforced with aluminium and wood free, Apeer will not rot, bow, warp, crack, swell or shrink. Doors are available in a choice of black, white, blue, green, red, mahogany and light oak finish, embedded into the GRP resin.

Security has been a priority for Apeer’s designers and achieving PAS 23 and 24, as well as Secure by Design approval was important. Often a target for thieves, a glazed panel can be vulnerable. However Apeer’s triple-glazed unit is impossible to remove externally as it is secured into the door with a patent pending grooved innovation. It also has the added benefit of no unsightly fixings. With a double rebate and a three point locking mechanism and discreet, unassailable hinges, Apeer’s triple construction will prove a sound defence against intruders and a beautiful asset to any discerning home.

Ducosun F : Architectural Sun Control

Ducosun F is an external sun control system made from extruded aluminium louvre blades, which was launched at this year’s Interbuild. The elliptical shape of the blades combines shade and a big span. The many different settings provide a solution for every direction, width and glass surface. Ducosun F ensures a good balance between sun control and light entry without changing the colour of the incident light, prevents glare and considerably reduces solar heat gain, thus ensuring a comfortable indoor climate.

The external Ducosun F is often preferred to internal sun control systems. The heat of the sun is kept out before it hits the glass. Moreover, the elliptical shape diffuses the daylight. The low winter sun provides passive solar energy (maximum energy gain).

Ducosun F results in more privacy because a glass facade is shielded but provides nevertheless for an uninterrupted outside view.

Ducosun F is very often used as a design element. The creative system's austere lines add to the architectural aspect of the design. Architects now have a choice in design! Ducosun F is available in all RAL colours, thus allowing interesting shades to be integrated in the architecture.

Ducosun F is swiftly and easily assembled using a minimum of tools.

Sheerline Displays Access Solutions at Interbuild

If access systems for disabled people are what you need, UK company LB Plastics' Sheerline ramp system was one of the products which formed part of the Disability Access section of this year's Interbuild.

Two typical domestic Sheerline ramps, leading to a front Masterdor door-set, were the focus of the stand, presenting an access solution which will help organisations work toward the recommendations set out in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.

Sheerline highlights include the launch of its new 8-inch deck plank which is stronger and quicker to install, new deck lights which can help guide partially sighted users and Sheerline's secondary handrail which provide a safer and a more comfortable grip for ramp users. Sheerline also showed deck planks in its new clay colour, alternating with beige for increased contrast and visibility.

The Sheerline system is constructed from thermoplastic material and features a slip-resistant surface, which is tested to UKSRC issue 2 June 2000, and is Approved Document M and BS 8300: 2001 compliant. The system has also been weight-load tested to BS6399 Part 1

FAAC Door Operator Shortlisted in Interbuild Disability Access Awards

FAAC'S 950BM automatic door operator has been shortlisted for Interbuild's inaugural New Product Awards in the Disability Access Award category. The FAAC 950BM is a swing door operator that offers a highly flexible solution for door automation.

Will Walker, Ceneral Manager of FAAC (UK), comments, 'Installers automating a number of existing doors - to ensure compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act : are faced with a wide variety of door types, and require an operator that will fit in almost any application. The great advantage of the 950BM electro-mechanical swing operator is that it can be installed on the door or lintel, in either pull- or push-arm configuration.'

With stylish looks and low operating noise, FAAC's new 950BM incorporates an integrated microprocessor unit with a range of operating logics, including adjustable opening and closing speeds, pause times, opening angles and drive force. An anticrushing safety device, active for both opening and closing, immediately reverses the door in the event of meeting an obstacle. The device memorises the point of impact and approaches it at slow speed on the next operation, only returning to standard operating speed after verifying that the obstacle has been removed.

From April 2004 Part III of the DDA gives disabled people important rights of access to everyday services that others take for granted, and requires service providers to make permanent alterations to their premises where physical features make access to their services impossible or unreasonably difficult for disabled people. This includes fitting automated doors where necessary. FAAC, a world leader in gate and door automation, has operators within its range suitable for all situations.
