Seminar Programme at Glassex 2003

Below is the full Seminar Programme for Glassex 2003, which contains something of interest within all major sectors. The EN1279 presentation on Sunday afternoon from two BSI specialists will no doubt attract a good crowd, as will MILA's demonstration on Monday lunchtime of its central locking system for the home, first previewed at last year's Glassex, and now fully launched. Another popular lunchtime session will be 'FENSA - Current Issues' chaired by FENSA Chief Exec Graham Hinett.

All seminars are FREE to attend, but places are limited, so please ensure your seat as soon as possible by contacting Robyn Murdoch on 020 8277 5208 or email robyn.murdoch@emap.com

SUNDAY 23rd MARCH

10.30-11.30
Software Solutions for a Transparent Business and a Healthy Bottom Line!

One of the great benefits of a small business is personal knowledge - this can become a serious problem, as a company expands, if that knowledge is not disseminated and shared with new staff effectively and efficiently. A company where everyone has access to all relevant information will function far more effectively than one where this does not happen. Good software solutions empower people to do their jobs to their maximum potential, thus keeping customers happy and ensuring a healthy bottom line.

Presented by: Jon Twigge, RoofWright - software for the roofing professional.

11.45-12.45
The Four Steps to BS EN 1279.

What does BS EN 1279 mean to manufacturers? What is required to comply with this mandatory standard? Information on Factory Production Control, System Description, Technical File and the required testing that will allow you to become CE compliant will be covered in this session. With BS EN 1279 being a harmonised standard, all manufacturers across Europe will produce sealed units to the same criteria. Failure to comply with the FULL requirements may leave the manufacturer open to prosecution. Remember compliance is mandatory!

Presented by: Kevin Frewin, Technical Development Manager, BSI Product Services and Peter Brudenell, Business Development Manager, BSI Product Services.

14.00-15.00
GLASS Charter (1) - Join us on the road to health and safety excellence.

The Glass Charter was successfully launched within the UK's glazing industry over a year ago and has seen tremendous benefits brought to individual companies. To show Government that the industry is capable of monitoring itself on health and safety issues and to ensure that legislation is not imposed on us, you should attend this seminar and sign up.

Presented by: Alison Bettac and Peter Dunn, GGF.

15.15-16.15
GLASS Charter (2) - Health and Safety in practice - an industry case study.

Following on from the previous seminar, here we look at a practical industry case study.

Presented by: Alison Bettac and Peter Dunn, GGF.

MONDAY 24th MARCH

10.30-11.30
Marketing for Growth (How Aluminium Could Help You Sell More PVCu Windows).
Summarising the nature of the replacement window market and why you need to differentiate your offering to the consumer, this seminar will show how to understand the selling environment and how to use aluminium to generate more leads and more interest in your full range of products, and when to close with PVCu or with aluminium. It will explode the myth that aluminium windows are old-fashioned, have poor performance and are difficult to fit and will confirm the wide availability of products. It will also demonstrate how you can increase financial performance by selling more PVCu and by selling higher added value aluminium products.

Presented by: Nick Moss, Walnut Management.

11.45-12.45
Lift, Lock, Link - 1st Generation Central Locking for the Home.
This seminar examines how the introduction of central locking systems for doors and windows will have a positive impact upon door and window safety and security. It will discuss the technology, its applications and, through practical demonstrations, the main features and benefits for fabricators, installers, architects, specifiers and end-users.

Presented by: David Beeley, MILA Hardware.

13.30-15.00
'Live' Frames.

We all know the contribution that the frame makes to the overall energy efficiency performance of the window. Now we need to find out how those windows can be developed to make an impact in other areas such as recycling, solar control and security.

Chaired by: Ian Chisholm, GGF, with guest speakers.

15.15-16.45
Regulating the Conservatory.

There has been much talk about the consultation paper and process discussing whether to bring conservatories back under Building Control. This forum will allow us to discuss the possibilities both real and theoretical relating to these issues.

Chaired by Ian Chisholm, GGF, with guest speakers.

Will your hardware land YOU a fine or imprisonment, or save lives?

From 1st April 2003, it will be illegal to supply products for Fire Doors or Panic and Exit Doors that do not comply with the Construction Products Directive for safety. All hardware in these criteria has to be produced by a manufacturer to a relevant BS EN Standard and will be CE marked. Due to the critical life safety aspect, penalties are severe and INDIVIDUALS and COMPANIES are equally responsible and vulnerable to either fines or imprisonment. It could be a member of your family that you are putting in danger!

Presented by: Doug Lucas, Business Development Manager, International Door Controls.

15.00-16.00
Energy efficiency and windows - the future after Approved Document L.

With the advent of Approved Document L, the fenestration industry has made a dramatic leap in the area of window design and energy efficiency. Is it possible to take these developments even further?

Presented by: Kelly Butler, Energy Saving Trust.

Open specification could lead to Open Windows! CPD APPROVED.

Purchase of PVCu windows in the public sector accounts for an annual expenditure of over £200 million. A window is fairly complex and is required to perform to exacting standards. In response to wide demand, Lapfag (Local Authority PVCu Frame Advisory Group) has produced a specification for Casement and Tilt/Turn windows. BSI has developed a Kitemark scheme to compliment the specification, which enables contractors to gain independent third party certification to confirm consistent application of the specification. The major benefits for the Public Sector Specifier include elimination of risk in the procurement of PVCu windows and inconsistency in survey and installation.

Presented by: Peter Brudenell, Business Development Manager, BSI Product Services and Richard Bunker, LAPFAG.

14.00-15.00
The Future is Paperless.

Surveyors can use Tablet PCs, even on scaffolding, and link to the office to confirm production schedules. The office can place orders to suppliers using XML. The factory can provide works instructions and track progress using screens at each station. A final button click can even register the final installation with FENSA using XML. This seminar will provide a guide to the paperless future, and demonstrate that most of it is here today.

Presented by: Goronwy Jones and Chris Hockney, Windowmaker.
