Glazed
IMAX Drum
The
centrepiece of the Nicholas Grimshaw designed Millennium Point scheme
in Birmingham is a dramatic 38 metre diameter glazed drum containing an
IMAX cinema.
The glazed cladding system incorporates Linit U-profiled glazing, whereby
glass channel sections are fitted into thermally broken curved aluminium
frames at each end without the need for any additional intermediate framing
or structural support.
Linit U-profiled glass sections are available in a number of standard
widths and surface finishes and are assembled as either a single or double
glazed construction with silicon pointed butt joints to provide a completely
flush and smoothly curving appearance.
At Millennium Point the outer layer of glass has a textured external surface
with an 'Azur' blue coating to the smooth internal surface and the inner
layer of wired glass has a sandblasted surface for aesthetic purposes.
Linit U-profiled glazing is a simple and cost effective structural glazing
solution that is particularly suited to large areas with minimal framing.
Daylight Insulation Ltd exclusively supplies Linit U-profiled glazing
throughout the UK with installation undertaken by a network of approved
independent contractors.

Harlequin Frames, Synseal customer of two years, has recently completed
the fabrication and installation of a 4m x 4m T-shaped conservatory on
a new build development in Cambridgeshire. The conservatory was completed
with a castle gray satin finish in just over a week.
'The finish is achieved by the coating actually bonding into the PVC,
as opposed to laying on top of it,' explains Peter Brown, Managing Director
of Harlequin Frames. 'This allows us to supply the product with a ten
year guarantee. The conservatory has been such a success there are already
plans in place to install a second one for the same developer.'

Novel
Solution from SE Controls
Norwich's new £65 million state-of-the-art library offers more than
just a good read.
A sophisticated smoke ventilation system has been integrated within the
modern design of this Millennium Project providing a secure environment
for the public.

The
Norfolk and Norwich Millennium Library, which can be found at the landmark
'Forum' building, stands proudly on the site that once housed the Central
Library which was destroyed by fire in 1994. UK automatic window opening
specialist SE Controls installed its SELA 24P actuators in the entrance
facade of the library. The product has been fitted to the building's vents
which enables smoke to dissipate in the event of a fire.
The glass and stainless steel Forum, designed by leading architects Michael
Hopkins & Partners, has taken Norfolk into the 21st century with style.
SE Controls prides itself on its flexibility and demonstrated its ability
to adapt to the high-tech appearance of Norwich's library by manufacturing
the SELA 24P in highly polished stainless steel.
With industry experience spanning two decades, the Lichfield-based company
designed a smoke control panel to power the high level louvered smoke
vents which had already been installed, supplying a complete solution.
All of SE Controls' smoke systems are scrutinised by the Fire and Research
Centre at Warrington and are tested to the highest standard.
'We're obviously totally committed to developments within the smoke ventilation
market and are keen to incorporate these life-saving systems into new
buildings wherever possible. It's always satisfying to see one of Britain's
most advanced libraries benefiting from our expertise, said Will Perkins,
Director at SE Controls.

Out
With the Old in With the New
Strafford-upon-Avon based PVCu window manufacturer Prior Products recently
installed replacement windows in a 19th century property which was originally
the lodge for Ettington Hall.
Fox
Lodge, which is a striking house built around 1880 with three chimneys,
previously had a mix of oak and softwood windows installed but its owners
decided to replace them with pVCu alternatives when the oak windows began
to fail.
The new windows have been manufactured using Rehau PVCu profile and are
finished in a mahogany woodgrain finish which gives them the appearance
of authentic timber originals. However, unlike the originals, they feature
the latest high security locking devices.
The owners of the property wanted to appoint a local firm to carry out
the installation and chose Prior products because it enjoys a reputation
for high quality and personal service. They are delighted with the finished
result.

Wright
Style Glazing System Completes Cairo TV Complex
UK steel glazing specialist Wright Style has successfully completed a
prestigious contract in Egypt, using its advanced roof glazing systems.
Wright
Style, based in Devizes, Wiltshire, supplied 350 square metres of its
SR roof glazing system for the Muburak TV centre complex in Cairo, which
included a 16 metre single-span sloped main entrance.
'The SR system was chosen because of its inherent strength, allowing the
large unsupported span to be achieved without the requirement of additional
steelwork thereby improving the visual appearance of the glazed roof structure.'
says the company.
That combination of form and function is central to Wright Style's development
programme, working in partnership with designers and architects to supply
a comprehensive range ofinterior and exterior steel glazing products and
systems.
Wright Style's SR range of roof glazing systems, now successfully installed
in a
number of projects world-wide, comprise cold rolled steel and stainless
steel profiles. These are available in varying widths, depths and material
thickness to suit individual applications.
In February this year, the firm also announced the successful completion
of an SR series curtain walling system for the University of Hong medical
centre.
The SR systems are complemented with a wide variety of capping profiles,
in aluminium or stainless steel, with options for either structural or
point-fixed glazing.
Gaskets, with integral drainage channels, allow the system to pressure-equalise
and self-drain. This means it can deal with large amounts of water in
extreme weather conditions. The systems are also weather-performance tested
and certified to DIN and BS standards.
The Wright Style SR systems are available in fire-rated options for up
to 60 minutes for integrity only, or integrity and insulation to BS476
Part 22.
In addition, the SR system can accommodate a variety of glass thicknesses
of up to 100mm, making it suitable for ballistic and blast resistant applications
- a good choice for locations where the utmost protection and security
is required.
The SR systems can be manufactured either in stick format using shear
block construction or pre-welded as a modular unit.
Whichever method is utilised, Wright Style offers a complete technical
support
service to its network of licensed fabricators world-wide - ensuring global
coverage
with quality-assured local installation.
'Wright Style is committed to the provision of both bespoke and standard
systems, working in partnership with architects and specifiers to develop
innovative steel glazing solutions that both look good and deliver added
security.' says the company.

A
Patient Job For Everbrite
Everbrite's
ability to meet unique fenestration specifications within budget and within
highly restricted installation time scales won the Deceuninck fabricator
a £60,000 contract with the Highgate Private Hospital.
The private hospital needed 90 windows replacing. The age of the building
dictated that the windows should incorporate Georgian bars to enhance
traditional aesthetics. Window size was also a key issue - most measured
1.8m high by 1.2m wide - which meant more skilled fabrication and installation
methodologies were required.
'Most of the rooms were either bedrooms or operating theatres, and we
had to fit around each patients treatment schedule,' said Everbrite director
Stefan Lugmayer. 'If they were in theatre we had to go in and replace
their bedroom windows before they got back. It required speed, efficiency
and delicacy.'

Doorsets
For Leisure
A variety of different doorsets have been supplied on a new Leicestershire
leisure centre by leading manufacturers Leaderflush+Shapland, including
water resistant doors for swimming pool areas.
Doorsets
used at the Hood Park Leisure Centre in Ashby de la Zouch, designed by
architects The Gibson Hamilton Partnership, had to meet a range of technical
performance criteria including 30 and 60 minutes fire resistance. Various
finishes were selected including ash veneer and paint grade, as well as
post-formed laminate doors from Leaderflush+Shapland's Plasform range.
Radiused vertical edges to door leaves and frames, and the post-forming
of facings around them, give Plasform doorsets easy-to-clean, damage-resistant
and ergonomically friendly surfaces which are ideal for leisure and sports
facilities.
To meet the particular demands of swimming pool areas water resistant
Plasform WR doors were used incorporating the unique 'Cleanglaze' facing
system. Here, the complete door face is covered with clear PVC material
to fully encapsulate the door construction. The back of the PVC can be
printed with solid colours or graphic devices such as the distinctive
wave design used at Hood Park, leaving completely seamless vision panels.

First
UK Application of Technal's New FXi Balcony Doors
The first UK application of Technal's new FXi balcony doors has been completed.
Allan Murray Architects' Coalhill development is a significant landmark
in the regeneration of the historic docks at Leith in Scotland.
A joint venture by Buredi - the Burrell Company and EDI Group, this waterfront
scheme takes its inspiration from its nautical setting. It has a light,
spacious feel with a modernist white rendered exterior and is extensively
glazed in Technal's black framed aluminium curtain walling, door and window
systems.
The seven-storey development comprises two distinct blocks, one oval and
one rectangular, each containing 15 apartments, with restaurant and retail
units on the ground floor and open plan office suites on the first floor.
The oval block has commanding panoramic views, which were maximised with
the use of Technal's facetted MC curtain wall to follow the cylindrical
lines of the building, and the new FXi doors to the balconies.
The
stylish curved profiles of the contemporary FXi52 doors compliment the
design of the building, whilst a flush polyamide thermal bridge provides
good thermal performance.
The MC Trame curtain wall, which features distinctive horizontal lines,
adds interest to the glazing that encloses the commercial units, and contrasts
with the MC grid curtain walling used for the apartments. Opening lights
were provided by top hung concealed vents to naturally ventilate the offices
and retail units, and tilt/turn windows for ease of cleaning on the residential
floors above.
According to the architects, aluminium was selected for the glazing for
its low maintenance qualities, its long-term durability in a marine situation
and its finished appearance. The systems were double glazed in clear low
E glass and fabricated and installed by St Gobain Solaglas.

glazing systems in the Technal range, visit the recently updated website:

Sensitive
Supermarket Design Uses CAP Glazing
A sensitively designed supermarket facility site, close to their beautiful
hills, has been welcomed by the locals of Malvern. Architects The Hancock
Ward Company used fabricator CAP to be responsible for the glazing element
of the new store. Main contractor was Costain.
Substantial civil engineering work had to be undertaken so that the building
sat snugly into the slope of the hill. Its traditional shape and natural
materials of rendering and slate are complemented by CAP's powder coated,
double glazed feature windows with clear laminated glass, which are set
into stone surrounds. These are constructed from Kawneer 1200 curtain
wall sections to give narrow profiles.
For circular turreted glazed canopies and lean-to walkways to shelter
shoppers, CAP used dark green traditional patent glazing bars and other
ground floor glazing fabricated from Kawneer's 451 and 400 shopfront systems.
For safety, heat-soaked glass was used for all overhead glazing.
Architect Paul Hughes for Hancock Ward says 'We have worked with CAP over
a number of years and have always been pleased with its performance and
professional approach.'
CAP (Kawneer's largest dealer worldwide), has recently expanded further
through the acquisition of an additional West Bromwich site. Now with
a £21M turnover and 84,000sq ft facility, the company has more capacity
for fabrication and offices.

Recyclable
Romas Specified by Tower Hamlets
An area of Arbour Square in the east of London has been aesthetically
improved by 20 Deceuninck black Roma recycled planters supplied by PBM
Plastic Building Materials Ltd. The planters provided the specifying authority,
the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, a good alternative to the traditional
concrete option as they were lighter, more portable, and competitively
priced to give the installation better overall value.
The
Borough was also impressed that the planters were available off the shelf
for a fast delivery. This, combined with the service levels offered by
PBM, led to a smooth installation and satisfied tenants.
'The fact that the planters were recyclable, and that the Arbour Square
project is based in a conservation area was the icing on the cake really,'
said Richard Pearman, contracts administrator for the London Borough of
Tower Hamlets. `Deceuninck's Roma planters were a light and easily portable
solution to landscaping the area. They were installed alongside the completion
of a number of other essential repairs to the area to create a cleaner,
more pleasing environment for our tenants.'

Sheffield
Millenium Galleries Opened by Geze
The Millennium Galleries in Sheffield have been officially opened amidst
much excitement; but opening the Galleries in a different way is the new
automatic door from Geze UK. This feature incorporates the Geze Slimdrive
SCR curved sliding door assembly with a 360deg. vestibule, which is the
first of its kind from the specialists in door and window controls technology.
The glass vestibule forms a complete enclosed lobby, providing practical
protection against the elements whilst offering a feeling of unrestricted
access often absent from a revolving door entrance.
After
six years of planning and construction, the jewel in the crown of Sheffield's
urban regeneration project 'Heart of the City' is now open to the public.
Sheffield City Council employed architects Pringle Richards Sharratt to
create the white concrete and glass building consisting of four galleries
leading off from an internal avenue filled with natural light from the
vaulted roof of translucent glass blocks. The overall design gives the
space a light, airy impression. The building is intended to function not
as a closed-off 'museum-like' area but as a light and inspiring place
to visit in the midst of the city. The architects wanted to make it welcoming,
with an atmosphere as much like a garden as an interior space. The sleek
new automatic door from Geze UK is in line with this design concept.
The door controller, which has a height of only 70mm and a depth of 185mm,
can operate a maximum door leaf weight of 120kg and a LED programme switch
provides off, one-way traffic, reduced opening and fully automatic modes.
Non-directional motion detectors are fitted on the outer faces of the
drum and set within the ceiling panels inside it. In the event of power
failure there is a battery back-up system to ensure a means of escape.
lnfrared presence detectors set discreetly between the openings prevent
doors closing on persons within the threshold area and there is an electro-mechanical
locking system to the outer doorset.
The climate-controlled galleries have been described by experts as the
highest quality exhibition space outside London, with a wide programme
of exhibitions and displays scheduled, including exhibits on loan from
their exclusive partnership with the Victoria & Albert Museum. This
is a major cultural boost for Sheffield and the surrounding region, prompting
Chris Smith, former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, to
comment that the Millennium Galleries will 'turn the city into a cultural
capital.'

City
Glass - The Final Link
City Glass has specially designed three linking Edwardian conservatories,
for the Bristol University Sports Complex.
The
project involved the Quantal conservatory roofing system and a bespoke
designed hidden box gutter that linked the three roofs together to create
an 8.5m x 4m extension to the restaurant and bar area at the University.
'We were tasked with this unusual project on the flat roofed veranda of
the existing bar, Because the building is listed, we had to ensure the
guttering was not visible and that the external view of the conservatory
featured a panelled effect. We decided that the logical option was to
design a box gutter system that would be hidden by the panelling- solving
two issues in one!' explained Kevin Cole, General Manager.
'ln addition we needed a conservatory roofing system that perfectly complemented
the hardwood windows, The Quantal system offers authentic traditional
period styling and strong external aluminium construction, which meant
it was the perfect choice for this installation.
'The project took just three weeks from design conception, through fabrication
of the roofing system and final installation and joinery. lnstallation
involved clamping the specially designed box gutter in place and then
lowering each of the three roofs including the eaves-beam on to it.
'We have fabricated the Quantal system for more than five years, they
provide us with not only an excellent product that is available in a comprehensive
range of profiles and glazing bars, but a superb technical and customer
support service that allows us to offer a first class service to both
our retail and trade customers - one of the reasons why 90% of our new
business is a result of recommendations from satisfied home-owners,' he
added.
City Glass specialise in unusual projects and offer a bespoke design service,
so each conservatory is specifically built to meet the exact needs of
every customer. A wide range of styles, finishes, glazing and ventilation
options are available and can be seen at the company's two showrooms.
Established over 35 years ago, City Glass remains a family run business,
and is part of a network of Quantal fabricators across the UK.
