PPG Introduces New High-Temperature Powder Coatings

PPG Industries has developed new, high-temperature powder coatings that offer superior durability in prolonged exposure to temperatures of up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit.

Based on proprietary silicone chemistry, Envirocron HT powder coatings are specially formulated for applications - such as automotive, appliance, and lawn and garden - in which resistance to high temperatures is essential, according to Rob Edwards, PPG's director of global powder coatings operations.

'PPG's new heat-resistance technology offers significant improvement over technology and products previously available to the industry,' Edwards said.

'In addition to their superior durability, Envirocron HT powder coatings have superb adherence characteristics that enable customers, in the proper circumstances, to recoat or touch up products on the manufacturing line instead of scrapping them,' Edwards added. As a result, manufacturers can dramatically reduce their product reject rate and increase their profits.

Customers using PPG's Envirocron HT powder coatings have also reported excellent chemical and moisture resistance. 'The bottom line is that Envirocron HT powder coatings can improve quality and manufacturing efficiency,' Edwards said.

The coatings' quality and durability have been demonstrated during extensive testing at PPG's Coatings Research and Development Center in Allison Park, Pa., and in a three-year test in Florida.
'Envirocron HT coatings show no apparent degradation in properties when exposed to high temperatures over prolonged periods of time,' Edwards said. 'And while they demonstrate continuous high performance at up to 600 degrees, Envirocron HT powder coatings also can endure short-term temperatures of up to 850 degrees,'

Pittsburgh-based PPG is a global manufacturer of coatings, glass, fibre glass and chemicals, with 120 manufacturing locations and equity affiliates in 24 countries. Sales in 2001 were $8.2 billion.

DOUBLE BOOST FOR APOLLO

The steady expansion experienced by Apollo Birmingham Limited is about to receive another boost. Following the success of its pvc-u vertical sliding window, Apollo has decided to launch a series of casement windows.

'We have always seen ourselves as specialists in specific products'says Mike Jack, managing director at Apollo. 'To introduce a pvc system to produce traditional casements requires a slightly different approach but we are determined that although we are venturing into the realms of general trade fabrication, we will not lose sight of the values and service that have created the demand in the first place!'

Success of the pvc vertical sash window is attributed to a number of factors, including the appearance, strength and rigidity of the product. But most important of all, Apollo customers consider Apollo's quality and service package to be excellent value in comparison to similar offerings on the market.

'That's why we have chosen the same system for traditional casements, HW 70'says Mike. 'It will provide the same quality of materials, it also provides an attractive appearance and we already have a good working relationship with the system company.'

This won't be the first time that Apollo has manufactured casement windows. "A large part of our customer base is involved with the commercial sector, so our aluminium portfolio has always included specification product, particularly to the States" continues Mike.

Apollo is well prepared to meet the challenge of launching the new system. The work force has increased by over 30% during the last twelve months and the team has become used to coping with steady, increased capacity. New machinery has been installed well ahead of the launch date so that staff can be fully trained and prepared.

Production of bespoke literature for customers is well underway and a pocket guide to show an easy route through Document L for pvc customers was completed back in February.

In addition to the pvc vertical sliding window, Apollo's current portfolio includes pvc residential and patio doors, ready to fit, with all the options you would expect from a specialist fabricator.

Mike concludes, "We will continue to produce all products in our current portfolio without compromise. Our aim is to produce traditional casement windows with the same specialist attitude and results. It's a challenge, but then, that's what Apollo has thrived on for years!"

Rapid Introduces a New Double Mitre Saw

Rapid Maschinenbau GmbH has launched the prototype of the new double mitre saw DGL 300.

'The DGL 300 is a useful investment for the future because it is one of the few double mitre saws which allows the window producer to do double-cutting at profiles with large depths of more than 80mm', explains Armin Dangel, Rapid's head of sales department. 'Not only plastic profiles but also aluminium can be sawn in all common cross-sections in double cutting.

'For the first time Rapid integrated the linear rail guide at a double mitre saw. Hence Rapid applied a quality feature that is normally used only with heavy machine tools.

A further innovation is the pneumatic inner-tilting device which allows an inclination of the saw head towards the inside by 90° and 45°. The intermediate angle is adjusted via a mechanical stop with angle scale.

'The swivel-mounted saw protection guards are new as well making operation of the saw safe and convenient for the operator. Due to the new driving concept the DGL 300 is available with one-sided stationary saw head or with two movable saw heads.

The DGL 300 is suitable for smaller and medium-sized window production companies wanting to achieve fast and high-quality cutting even without a cutting centre.

This saw can also useful by companies with very high production quantities as it can be used, for example, as a supplement to the Optima VI/VIA for special designs.'

Corner Cleaning Machines With Two, Four or Six Axes

Urban GmbH & Co. Maschinenbau KG has launched a six axes corner cleaning machine.

Not only the SV 530 profits from the new Urban-technology. Three-dimensional machining is now possible with most of Urban's corner cleaning machines. 'Due to this advantage our customers enjoy much more flexibility and even a higher machining speed when corner cleaning frames and sashes', remarks head of sales department Reinhard Kreißl.

'By this innovation it's now also possible to cut the sealing groove at corner drives. Machining steps such as corner and cross bracket drillings or cuttings for a covered fitting will be performed smoothly by Urban corner cleaners in future.Urban is once again presenting an innovation which will save time and money for the customer on a daily basis'.

'A further advantage of the new solution from Urban is that usually all existing corner cleaning machines can be upgraded easily with the new machining possibilities' comments Josef Jägg from the designing department.

Evolution - Your Perfect Production Manager

The Production Manager module within Business Micros Evolution manufacturing software is designed for error free flexibility in production control and scheduling. Real time verification and user defined production stages mean that every product can be traced at every stage of the fabrication process by a simple bar code swipe on the factory floor.

Maximising production efficiency is a key feature of Evolution. Main batches are created with the automatic generation of sub-batches, containing a mix of simple and complex designs. This eliminates the to-ing and fro-ing of tool, profile and personnel changes, streamlining operator efficiency and reducing the margin for mistakes.

The production diary can also be checked against real time requirements. This enables the operator to determine whether there is sufficient capacity and can suggest the next available and suitable production date.

Evolution's Production Manager is a valuable management tool. Its production history feature details work flow through each stage. The data is processed and visually presented, making it a source of information when making key decisions such as, for example, manpower placements and easing bottlenecks in the factory.

Every frame, transom, mullion, sash and ancillary can be cut, prepped, welded, and cleaned, with each stage being constantly monitored from one point. Equally, every machine can have its setting defined - be it double cutting, profile placement, feed direction - from the same single control point.
Winstar Evolution from Business Micros works with every machine type - saws, machining centres, welders, corner cleaners, right up to fully automated factory systems.

Aluminium Cladding Concept Trocal Innonova

Trocal, a profile brand of HT Troplast AG (HT), has launched the extended Trocal lnnonova 70 aluminium cladding system. Rational production is guaranteed by the flush processing and simple clip-on function of the aluminium cladding. The decisive factor is the new 'Kompetenz aus einer Hand' [competence from a single source] logistics concept of the aluminium cladding from Trocal. The processor orders profiles and aluminium cladding from Trocal in Troisdorf. The profiles and cladding are then coated before being supplied to the processor, who benefits by not having to carry out complex logistical activities or maintain stocks. All colour varieties - painted, anodised and laminated, as well as powder-coated wood finishes and special colours - are available and can be called off in the required amounts as needed.

The slimline profile with flush corner connections is fixed to frames and sashes without any assembly accessories. Clips, drilling jigs and corner connectors are not needed. Appropriately modified standard profiles ensure correct and solid mounting.

Aluminium cladding systems are designed to combine the best of two materials - plastic inside and aluminium outside. In addition they open up an unlimited choice of colours. Since aluminium cladding can be finished in any RAL or NCS colour, anodised, film coated, given a powder-coated wood look or painted in special colours with modern coating methods, there are no limits to the imagination. In the industrial sector and in medium-sized companies, for example, this system enables the design element 'colour' to be used for the realisation of a corporate design concept, which can be embodied in the windows of the company building. Private clients can also benefit. This versatile use of colour can give added value to the windows in their homes.

Trocal Confort Exclusive Design in the Round

The Trocal Confort Exclusiv claims to set new benchmarks in window design. The round, slim profile imparts harmony to windows in new buildings and gives a new look to renovation projects. In the French casement model, in particular, it accentuates the advantages of rounded lines. The design enables the window handle to be placed in the centre, giving the inside of the window a symmetrical appearance.

The basis of the new profile is the Trocal Confort series - a rebate seal system, which provides an alternative to the centre seal system of the Trocal Elegance series. A diagonal rebate in the outer and sash frames ensures drainage and improves ease of cleaning. Moreover the incorporation of a mechanical connector is easier.

'The new glazing rebate inserts simplify the glass packing and shorten the window production time. The identical rebate shape of all main profiles and a restriction to only two reinforcement cross sections also increase ease of processing. Another simplification is the multifunctional seal, which can be used as a rebate in outer frame, sash and glazing and is made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). In line with the design concept, these seals are integrated almost invisibly.' says the company.

Compatibility with the 900 series offers customers another rationalisation effect, in that all ancillary profiles of the 900 series and the assembly accessories can be combined with Trocal Confort. In accordance with the system concept, foreign building methods have been taken into account in the Trocal Confort profile platform.

Safety is an increasingly important topic and the change in the axis of the screwed connection to the protected inside area simplifies the use of modern hardware kits for increased protection against intruders and improves the system's basic safety.

Reinforced hardware components and screwed connections through two PVC walls provide the standard window with a good measure of intruder protection and make life additionally difficult for criminals. Trocal Confort can accommodate thermal and noise insulation glazing. Trocal PVC profiles are recyclable satisfying legislative requirements for an environmentally friendly purchasing policy and comply with the German waste management act. TROCAL supports the Window Recycling lnitiative (FREI).

New Vector Excluders from CWG Enhance Window Security

Simple solutions work best and the new Vector Excluder from Corby Windows Group is a simple, yet effective solution to window security. Identical, metal hook type components are firmly screw fitted opposite each other on the hinge side of both sash and frame. They sit there unobtrusively, never coming in contact until someone tries to force the window. Then they lock together firmly resisting attempts to lever the sash from the frame.

With CWG's Vector Excluder, there are none of the problems usually associated with other frame to sash security devices who's location must be exact with little margin for movement which, when it occurs, can cause binding and noise when opening and closing the sash. CWG Technical Advisor, Ross Walker, commented, 'Vector is fully compatible with the Rehau's Tritec-Style and 70mm, plus Shield 70mm PVCu systems fabricated by the company. Furthermore, should an existing installation be extended or an upgrade is needed, Vector can easily be retrofitted'.

CWG's Vector Excluder will improve the security of window installations. This is an important selling point for installers and, because of its simplicity, will reduce the potential for customer complaints and time consuming call backs.

Cotswold Gets Sac'ed

'The window industry is often criticised for being slow moving and lacking in innovation. However, one company pushing change and creativity to their limits is Sac Systems, following the launch of Intelligent Protection Systems (IPS3G).' states founder Giovani Laporta (pictured below left).

It's about putting the safety and security of the end-user first, but there are so many obstacles to get past before you can achieve any real innovation; peopie's attitudes need to change, but also it is often difficult to find a manufacturing company that's prepared, and indeed able, to change the way it does things.'

Sac Systems teamed up with Cotswold Architectural Products for the manufacture of its friction stay, which forms part of a total product package, comprising a shoot bolt, fast-lock handle, and multi-functional hinge. The hinge performs as a restricted stay which can open to full egress at 90 deg when a small latch is released. Other built-in release-latch features allow the window to slide into a central position within the frame for easy-clean access.

'It's a world first,' claims Laporta. 'It provides every window with a 90 deg exit which can be safely restricted to 100mm. The system also includes an innovative 90 deg sash auto-lockout feature which can be activated at the push of a button, specifically designed for top-hung windows in order to assist rescue teams and firemen in their work. Top-hung egress is an issue we know Cotswold is extremely concerned about, so it made perfect sense to team up with a manufacturer that shared our views.'

The IPS3G friction stay has no end cap which allows the window sash to be drawn closer to its outer frame.
