NEW
MIRRORED FIRE DOOR GAP TESTER FROM THE BWF
Building control officers, installers and others involved in fire door
safety standards, can quickly check the 3mm maximum margins allowable
between fire door leaves and frames using the new bwfgaptester available
from the British Woodworking Federation (BWF).
The bwfgaptester helps installers ensure that they are complying with
the New Building Regulations, Approved Document B - 2000 edition. The
mirror provides a quick and easy method to check that the BWF-CERTIFIRE
Fire Door and Doorset Scheme labels are in position, clearly showing the
fire door integrity rating, manufacturer's name and telephone number.
The labels attached to every fire doors in the Scheme are tamper-evident
and also carry a unique number for each door, of which the manufacturer
has records. This ensures full traceability.
All fire doors and doorsets manufactured by the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme's
Members have been tested in UKAS approved laboratories and every Member's
production methods are checked by an ISO 9002 third party every six months.
The BWF-CERTIFIIRE Scheme's Members now account for 90% of all standard,
made-to-measure and bespoke timber fire doors sold in the UK. Membership
is extended to manufacturers of doorsets, door frames and glazed apertures,
as well as suppliers of closers, seals, hinges and materials used in fire
door manufacture.

FOAMSEKURE
- KING OF SEKURITY
Foamsekure is a foamtape of extraordinary strength and long term adhesion
created by merging a high density Polyolefin foam which is completely
inert, with a thick coating of solvent free pure acrylic adhesive, using
revolutionary coating technology. This combination creates a waterproof
and water resistant tape which the company claims has unequalled long
term adhesion, even with difficult low energy surfaces, such PVCu window
extrusions.
Foamsekure
XD and Foamsekure BMS offer the customer confidence when glazing, bar
bonding and trim mounting with PVCu and timber windows. Initial tack and
bond strength, when combined with the minimum of application pressure,
create a high performance seal. Hot and cold weather temperature tolerances
mean that working with Foamsekure all the year round is not a problem.
These benefits help to reduce the damaging effects of applicator error,
and at the same time increase productivity.
'lmpervious to environmental degradation, Foamsekure will not discolour,
degrade or outgas when exposed to UV rays and it also has good resistance
to cleaning products which themselves contain solvents. Available in a
wide range of widths and thicknesses in both black and white, a swift
delivery of Foamsekure is assured.' says the company.
Hodgson Sealants exhibited Foamsekure at Glassex 2002 and will be exhibiting
at lnterbuild 2002 Stand D150, Hall 8.

VANCEVA(TM)
DESIGN - ADVANCED AESTHETIC SOLUTIONS FOR GLASS
Solutia claims that glass can now be incorporated into design schemes
in a way previously impossible. The company has launched Vanceva(TM) Design,
a new range of coloured and patterned polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayers
for laminated glass.
The
Vanceva(TM) Design range has the same robust properties as ordinary laminated
glass made with Saflex(R), a PVB interlayer manufactured by Solutia. Laminated
glass combines safety and security properties, UV protection, sound insulation,
durability and ease of maintenance.
Vanceva(TM) Design incorporates ten basic colours and nine designs. By
superimposing up to four layers of colour, more than 600 different colours
of laminated glass can be obtained. Additionally, layers of colour and
design can be combined to produce original
bespoke laminated glass.
Architects, interior designers and space planners can use Vanceva(TM)
Design for exterior and interior applications. Solutia's new range combines
aesthetic quality with technical performance and means that coloured and
patterned laminated glass can be used either as a structural or design
element.
Solutia
have also developed a design tool at http://www.vanceva.com.
Visitors to the site can experiment with Vanceva(TM) Design in the online
interactive studio, where they will be able to produce their own coloured
and patterned laminated glass designs. From here, customers can order
samples online and learn more about Vanceva(TM) Design.
As well as being specified for conventional windows and doors, laminated
glass can also be used for internal partitions, shelves, barriers, balustrades,
staircases, floor glazing, balconies and glass paving slabs, as well as
exterior cladding.
Philip Oesau of Solutia said, ' The Vanceva(TM) Design range now allows
designers to employ an enormous degree of creativity in both exterior
and interior schemes. Coloured and patterned glass can be incorporated
into a design with spectacular results. We're looking forward to working
with innovative architects and interior designers the world over who are
keen to exploit the full potential of Vanceva(TM) Design.'

NEW
DOLLKEN STONECHIP CLADDING COLOURS
Dollken Stonechip Cladding from KR Plastics has been widely specified
by Local Authorities and Housing Associations in particular to extend
the life of properties which, although structurally sound, have suffered
deterioration of the external skin and whose thermal properties do not
meet today's standards.
Dollken
have now introduced additional colours to extend the choices for creating
an attractive visual appearance, which will blend with surrounding properties.
Sizilia is a white and yellow combination giving a Cotswold stone colour
effect and Azura is a mix of blues creating a Mediterranean look. They
join the existing colour range of Ravennah, Umbria, Crystal, Montana,
Navada and Blanca.
Stonechip cladding is manufactured from cellular foam thermoplastic with
natural stone aggregate embedded into the surface during production to
ensure longlife. It is a dry cladding system which, unlike wet render
systems, can be installed during wet and adverse weather conditions making
it suitable for use all year round. It is simple to cut on site to match
complex as well as straightforward detailing using normal working tools.

PORTAL
PREDICTS CONFIDENT FUTURE FOR WOODGRAIN PANEL
PVCu door panel and composite door manufacturer, Portal Products, is predicting
a confident future for the UK woodgrain panel market.
Rising sales of Portal's Thermasure product coincide with latest industry
figures that reveal growing demand for woodgrain door panels, prompting
the company's positive comments.
According to figures published by Palmer Market Research in November 2001,
the number of woodgrain panel installations grew by 3.6% in 2000 to 72,000
panels representing 18.5% of the total door panel market.
There is also a significant trend towards lighter woodgrain panels and
corresponding move away from the darker, more traditional mahogany-effect
finishes. Demand for light woodgrain panels is up 40% from 27,000 to 35,400
panels compared to 2000, with dark woodgrain down 17% to 36,600 panels.
The company claims that confidence in the woodgrain market has come back
mainly as a result of new hightech products such as Thermasure from Portal
Products that offer significantly greater resistance to problems associated
with extreme temperature ranges.
Thermasure
incorporates new COMPAX door skin technology to create a woodgrain panel
that will not crack or blister and panel bow is drastically reduced in
comparison to PVCu and ABS woodgrain door panels.
More than 14,000 Thermasure panels have now been installed since the product's
launch in 1999. Following successful field trials over the last two years,
Portal claims a 100% success rate with no product failures.
Cheltenham-based Portal Products can offer customers the full range of
woodgrain finishes featuring the Thermasure qualities, including Oak,
Rosewood, Walnut and traditional Mahogany.
The Rosewood door panels replicate the natural look of timber and match
the new Rosewood foil supplied by several leading systems companies. Available
across Portal's range of door, side, half, quarter, conservatory and flat
panels, demand for this finish has grown consistently since its launch
three years ago.

An open and shut case
- with VELUX
VELUX has just unveiled its advanced Smoke Ventilation System. 'that now
means you can easily comply with building regulations on smoke ventilation
with the added benefit of increased daylighting into a building.' says the
company.
Fully
automatic, the system opens up the roof window(s) as soon as smoke is detected
or a break glass point is activated. This assists a safe and fast escape
in the event of a fire, as smoke is dispersed from corridors and stairways.
Ease of use is a hallmark of its design and the system is quick and simple
to install and use, whilst its management by one control box makes it simple
to reset. It comes as one package containing everything needed via one single
order code - window(s) and flashing, control panel, break glass unit, actuator(s)
and smoke sensor.
Two different systems are available using either a single large window which
provides a 1m2 ventilation area or two smaller windows which provide a 1.5m2
ventilation area.
Accessories such as wall switches for controlled ventilation and rain sensors
are also available.

KAWNEER
EXTENDS CURTAIN WALLING RANGE WITH ELEGANT SEMI-UNITISED PICTURE FRAME SOLUTION
The RT 50PF is a semi-unitised, thermally insulated, picture frame curtain
walling system. It is the latest addition to Kawneer's range of curtain
walling solutions, combining slim line aesthetics, factory controlled glazing
and the cost effectiveness of a traditional grid stick system.
A
panellised solution, the RT 50PF has been designed to give architects and
specifiers identical slender sight lines, whether glazing is fixed or opening.
As Rod Owen, Kawneer's National Architectural Manager, says, 'One of the
key benefits of the system for architects is that fixed lights and opening
vents look exactly the same, giving a clean, smooth look.'
While the grid is mullion drained, the system is available in two forms.
A traditionally beaded version that has glazing panels with a 28mm wide
visible face, which, in combination with a 14mm recess between the panels
gives an overall sight line of 70mm. In contrast, the structurally glazed
option gives architects an all glass facade, save for a 14mm recessed gap
between each pane.
Opening lights, incorporating a multi-point locking system, can be either
top or side hung opening outward.
The company claims that the RT 50PF system is the ideal solution for projects
incorporating external hanging devices, such as brise soleil and walkways.
This is because the existence of a fully gasketed 14mm gap between each
individual panel facilitates the fixing ofthe device back to the main structural
element without the need to penetrate the pressure plate and cap, which
is necessary with most curtain walling systems.
With its coherent aesthetics, the system is also a solution for architects
and clients with a natural ventilation strategy to achieve.
The RT 50PF system has been tested in accordance with the relevant Methods
of Test in respect to weather tightness as specified in the CWCT's 'Standard
and Guide to Good Practice for Curtain Walling'. It performs to the following
British Standard: BS6375: Air Permeability: 600pa, Watertightness: 600pa,
Wind Resistance (safety): 1950pa, Wind Resistance (serviceability) 1300pa.
The RT 50PF curtain walling system is available in over 130 standard and
31 metallic Kawneer Permacover and Permacover Plus polyester powder paint
finishes. A comprehensive range of standard and coloured Kawneer Permanodic
anodised finishes is also available.

HALLMARK
NARROWS THE CHOlCE TO EXPAND ITS RANGE
To offer customers a wider choice of residential door options, Hallmark
has expanded its range of 470mm panels to increase the style options on
installations for narrower width frames. As with the existing designs
in the range they are expected to be especially popular for installation
in terraced properties.
Burghley, Goodwood and Normanby are the names of the three new 470 panels.
All three feature glass inset panels with antique lead setting off coloured
stained effects on Minster textured glass.
